I switched from DSL and cable to a Covad T-1. Good performance, but some times of varying packet loss. All in all a good solution, but not worth the money over what I got from DSL or cable.

I had Covad via EarthLink. I optimistically ordered 6.0Mbps, but was later told that 3.0Mbps was tops for my location. I never had speeds above 1.5Mbps for the first month of service. I would go DAYS without being able to connect. Thankfully, EarthLink screwed up and left my old 768kpbs service (Verizon via EarthLink) running, and I was able to limp by with that.
To top it all off, their Indian tech support would blame my router (a D-Link DGL-4300 -- a better than average router) and try to sell me their crap. Also, I could NEVER get tech support to send a Covad tech out to look at my wiring.
No wonder they charge an early termination fee; I would have quit and asked for my money back after the first month. But my year is up; EarthLink/Covad are history as soon as I finish shopping for a new ISP.

| Wrong Review Area. You are an Earthlink customer and your review should be under EL DSL instead. Since you do not buy any services directly from Covad and do not pay anything to Covad, you are not their customer. Earthlink resells ADSL from many companies like SBC/AT&T, Covad, Bellsouth/AT&T, Verizon, Qwest, Etc. and all EL reviews do not go under those providers. They go under EL DSL instead. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? | |

| Re: Wrong Review Area. Given that I can't move the review, and I apparently can't remove it, all I can do is say -- my bad.
But, given that Covad provides the physical layer, and that aspect has unfortunately been bad, future readers can take my experience as a caveat. | |

Decided to switch a clients ISP after experiencing support issues. Covad seemed to offer good price/speed balance. Ordered on 12/20, line was installed on 1/9. At that time supposedly the local telco had left a "short device" on the line and were called to remove. Coved tech allegedly was onsite 1/17 and reported that the line was operational (he never was actually in the building though). Called tech support on the 18th to try to turn up the line and after about an hour they determined that there was an issue at the telco CO, which should 'resolve in a couple of hours". Tried again to turn up a week later, and after another painful hour long session of unplugging cords it was ruled that the router was defective. The tech did offer to dispatch a truck, and the account maintenance rep. even graciously offered to not CHARGE for that techs trip! The support folks were not very knowledgeable at all, and could not deviate at all from script. Was not allowed to speak with a manager or second tier support. Even the account maintenance dept. seemed unwilling to try and save the account. It was promptly canceled after learning that the last truck roll might be charged even though the line had never worked.

Earthlink seems to be partnered with Covad in the Hampton Roads area of VA. My service is official through Earthlink. However, Covad is the company who actually comes out to set things up or troubleshoot DSL modem issues.
Overall, I am happy with the services that Covad has provided. I have left many review areas blank since Covad is not my ISP and is just the company that performs the installation and troubleshooting thereof.

Covad basically collects money for Verizon. They have access to the CO and offer other services such as Cisco VoIP.
The storm effect is still there, due to wind or ice, even when it is sunny out. Upgrading, dare I say researching, technology is last on the list. They do not "monitor" their lines, so if the board in the CO is bad, you have to call and tell them.
Streaming and on-line games work 99% of the time. 3 days out of the year expect no service.

After my local isp was purchased by RCN I decided to start fresh. Started out with SDSL @ 768, it was great but they changed the package to ADSL with a 384 upload cap.
Long story short, I upgraded to a dedicated loop (3Mb/768) and 10 static IP's. My router is 11K ft. from the CO so I was getting dumped into safe mode a few times a year. Got them to toggle the safe mode off so that doesn't happen anymore.
I put the router, fw and switch on a ups in my wiring closet and my local switch and computers on other UPS' so now when the power goes out I can still use my connnection for a couple of hours.
I wish they would give me back my SDSL like I signed up for originally.
Pretty much rock solid for 5 years.
I hope they're still around in light of current events. »/blog?cat=144

I registered here at Broadband Reports to post this review. I wanted to share my Covad story so everyone could read it.
Let me start out by saying that I've been using Covad for three years, and until this point I've been very happy. I've recommended it to many people. I have three DSL lines at three locations, two of which are dedicated loop. They have been very reliable. I called for support one time, about a year ago, and they had a technician replace the port for my line at the CO within hours. Commendable.
Recently, though, things haven't been as good. I've been having severe problems with one of my locations dropping the line every couple of hours. It then stays down for several hours. Eventually, it will come back up with tested speeds of about 250Kb/s (instead of 1.5Mb/s).
So, I called Covad, thinking that I would get the great support I've always expected. I find that they have outsourced their technical support to another country, and that the people on the phone are simply following scripts. They ask the same questions over and over again. They say they'll call back and don't (three times). They promised me a service call, but when I called back, they had no record of the call being set up and I must wait an additional four days to have a technician out (this happened twice). No one will let me talk to a manager. No one will give me a phone number I can call other than the main number. No one seems to care that I'm losing money while I'm waiting for them to fix this.
So the result is this: I will not recommend Covad to anyone else. I will not continue to use Covad for any of my lines. I will tell my story from the highest mountain, hoping to save someone else the trouble I've had. It's so disappointing to have had such great service in the past, and now find that the service is so poor. I've talked to a half-dozen people at Covad now, and I can't seem to find anyone who wants me to stay a customer.
Update: I did find someone. When I called to cancel one of my lines, the (English-speaking, finally) person on the other end seemed very intersted in keeping my business. Unfortunately, it's a case of too little, too late. Covad (at least in my area) is a little more expensive than everyone else, but I was willing to pay for high-quality service. Since I'm not getting that anymore, I've begun transitioning my lines.

Had Mindspring/Earthlink/Covad service installed in 2000. Can't get my speed (1500/384) upgraded because I still have an old dedicated line. The SpeedStream 5260 that was installed at the time is still performing flawlessly. I have a Mindspring email addy, pay my bill to Earthlink and seem to get my service from Covad.....go figure. Tech support has been adequate, but I've needed them so little I really don't have an objective opinion about them. The order process was a snap at the time. First someone came over a installed a new drop from the pole to the house as the old one was only a 2 conductor wire. Then a second person came in and installed a wire from the box in the basement to the computer. Then a third tech arrived and installed a net card in my computer and hooked up the modem. This was all for free and happened in about 4/5 days, as I remember. You don't see that kind of service today. Would like higher speeds but I seem to surf as quickly as my friends do that have much higher speed cable setups but without nearly as much down time. Seems like their set ups are kind of like having a Corvette in a traffic jam.
