i have earthlink as my dsl provider its the 6.0 package deal for around 45 dollars. earthlink has been very helpful every time i call for support. The problem i am having is dropped connections and slow internet surfing ,this has been very annoying as most of us who have this problem understand.it seems that nothing can be done i have changed my cables with cat 5 from the nid to my computer, and still no improvement.i have been told that the real dsl carrier is covad and they were notified of this problem covad eventually added a splitter to my phone line ,still no improvement.i have to say that earthlink and covad have been very helpful to me although the matter is still unresolved.i am going to try cable in the near future i will keep you all posted .

Covad's T1 is delivered to a residence, but the service is business oriented. Our company is evaluating various broadband services for a business-oriented voice application. The Covad service is delivered via frame relay with two PVCs, one with a high priority intended for voice traffic. This configuration works very well with our product and I have been able to overload the low priority circuit and cause significant packet loss there, with no apparent effect on voice quality.

The installation (done in 2005) went smoothly with (then) SBC arriving on time, and Covad following up to extend the T1 into the premises, supply and configure the Cisco 1700 router. The Covad installer (who worked for the company, not a sub) was even nice enough to pull a second drop from the telco demarc so I could wake up an extra POTS line.

There have been 5 unexplained outages this year, none longer than 3 minutes, and all but one in the early morning. I've taken these to be due to telco or ISP maintenance. I've had no reason to call for tech support since installation.

    They are a quality company

I have used Covad for my CPA firm for several years. Virtually no problems and service has been very reliable. We have a fair less sophisticated setup that you (SOHO service with closed loop) and are running around 2.5 due to Verizon (local phone company)restrictions. When I have tech questions the calls are directed to Canada. I have found tech support to be responsive and downtime to be minimum.

Covad is mostly reliable but they do need to upgrade their speeds. A bit overpriced, too. Hopefully, they make up for that with quality service and quick help. I'll soon let you know.

    Update:
Covad had a connection issue fixed promptly. Good job!

This Covad Reseller is named DSL Extreme. DSL Extreme is extremely hostile to customers. They seem to hate you when you call to order, or get customer service or tech support.

When I upgraded, their billing rep called me a "liar" ...When a friend called to order the minimum wage sales rep hung up on them.

When I asked for their manager, and complained, they terminated my service.

How about that folks? When you complain against Covad reseller DSL Extreme, they terminate your service.

Bottom line -- they hate people, hate data communication and they hate AT&T, whom they blame for all their problems.

    Different experience

I use Covad DSL service for our CPA office. I have found the service to be very reliable and the support staff (which is based in Canada) to be highly professional. No one has ever hung up the phone or been rude to me. We are pretty demanding user and the tech support has been good. Our speed is limited to around 2.5 but that is a function of our office to the central office of Verizon. I am not an employee of Covad but just wanted you to know.

Your review makes no sense and is misdirected

Your contract (and your bad experience) is with DSLExtreme, not Covad, so your anger is misdirected.

Your review should be posted in the DSLExtreme section, not Covad.

Why would the sales rep call you a liar when you upgraded? Did you say "I want to upgrade" and they said "you're a liar!"

How do you know that the sales rep makes minimum wage? Did you ask them how much they earn?

And at the end why do you say DSLextreme blames AT&T? You say they are a Covad Reseller for your account, what does AT&T have do with any of your comments?

Value for money:

I don't know anything about the technical issues other reviewers have
had, since I am a poor hapless non-technology person. I decided to
upgrade my small office (one desktop and two laptops) to DSL. Always
loved Earthlink dial-up, but when I contacted Earthlink DSL for
businesses, they jerked me around for about a month before telling me
(when I called them) they could not install it through our phone lines,
for reasons I still don't understand. Called Covad. They informed me I
needed a dedicated line and would install it for roughly the same price,
with a wireless router, so I went ahead.

Service was scheduled within two weeks or so to 3/30/07, then delayed to 4/3/07, but no one showed up. When I called, no
real reason was given except they were busy. The next service date they
could give me was on a Saturday, two weeks alter. I didn't want to go to the
office on Saturday. Next date, May 3, 2007).

Technician showed up and installation was okay into desktop, connected
by ethernet cable. I asked technician to set up my laptop, which he
did, but he had a lot of trouble. It worked for awhile but by the time
I got home I could not get onto my home wireless network. Went back to
the office the next day and could not get on there either. Called
Covad. I was told they do not work on wireless issues and to call
Netopia, who manufactured the wireless router. Netopia refused all
assistance. Called Covad back and threatened to cancel service if I
didn't get some help. They did ask a technician who finally told me
that maybe my wireless card was burning out. Took the laptop to Best
Buy where it was discovered that a driver for my wireless card wasn't
there anymore. They fixed that and it worked at home, but not at the
    office.

At that point I had to do some work, and take a vacation.

When I finally had time to dedicate a few hours I called technical
assistance again. Got a very nice fellow who actually tried to tackle
my problem, which now had to do with not getting a "key" number. Went
around and around with passwords until he finally decided that my router
was not storing passwords and was defective. He put in an order for a
new router. The next day a technician showed up but did not bring a
wireless router. He wanted to know if I "really needed one." I said
yes. He promised to come back in an hour but instead managed to come
back during the one hour I had told him I would not be in the office.
He took the Post-It with my ticket number on it away with him, so that
when I came back I had no ticket number.

This time, my laptop was telling me there was no "connectivity." Now
you all may know how to fix that, but I don't. I called Covad, where
they walked through whether or not the DSL worked with the desktop.
Once they established that it did, I asked about working with my laptop,
which was where they told me they would not work on wireless issues. I
pointed out that nowhere in their advertising or in their written
communications with me had it ever been stated that they would NOT
assist with getting my usage of the DSK up and running, and that
    included wireless.

They were firm that they would not assist me. I asked to speak to a
supervisor, who was also firm that they would not assist me. I said
that I therefore would cancel my service, since I could not use it as
    planned, and did so.

My guess is that unless you are something of a techie, or are friends
with one, you are going to be lost with Covad.

Covad is the underlying provider for all but Ma-Bell service inthis area. I have had other offering through Covad resellers which were good expiriences. I decieded to go to a higher speed service and went to Covad directly this time to deal with marginal line issues easier.

On a 15000+ dedicated loop, I and running 924/386 reliably. I ordered 1.5/384 which due to line length just is not possible and I knew this going in. Covad's pre-qual tool told me up front 924/386 would be the maximum I should expect.

$75 for this service on a 2 year contract is priced right where everyone else is (Lighting Bolt is a little cheaper but has a downside when dealing with marginal line lengths as you cannot contact Covad directly to argue issues otherwise great service from them).

As far as my equipment, the Broadxent 8120 is not real good on margin lines. I replaced it with a D-Link DSL-2540B and am real happy.

Tech support is excellent overall. I have only had one bad expirience with a tech who wanted to TNF (technically Not Feasable) the line without first going through a little work to determine what will work. Eventually I got this tech to see thing from my prespective and things worked out well.

"pricey dsl for what you think is going to be solid service"
"poor product while not capable of supporting what they sell... like buying a knock off and the label falling off"

My year long contract is almost up. As a network engineer I can tell you that
their service, customer service, and technical support are ALL sub-standard.

Service - Frequent disconnects. Even though the DSL link is up and I'm SUPPOSED
to have a static address, the address is really assigned by a PPOE server that
is constantly going down and having to "refresh" my address. I constantly get
the error message "cannot obtain address from PPoE server." Also how's this
for service. They issued me a busted bridge device that could only be
configured from the OUTSIDE interface without ANY security. So any user from
the outside world could bring up my device in their browser and reset my
connection at random. GREAT HUH? How did they solve this dilemma? They shut
down configuration. So no configuration from ANY interface. At no time did it
occur to them that a replacement model might be in order.

Customer Service - See above. They issued me a defective bridge device and then
used the workaround of shutting down it's configuration interfaces. After
corresponding with them for 9 days on the issue, they said that if I want a new
bridge device, I'd have to call in?!?!?!?!??! What could I tell their people on
the phone that the person handling my ticket couldn't tell them? Obviously this
unit has not heard of "one-stop-shopping."

Technical Support - Related to the frequent disconnects, this outfit couldn't
step back to networking 101 and go through the OSI model to troubleshoot my
issue. Um... the link is up according to the bridge so that means layer 1 and
layer 2 are good. Hmmm.... PPPoE server won't issue an address... think it's
time to look at the logs on the server? Ummm... have you looked at the logs
to show the frequent disconnects from your end? Or do most people order
expensive A$$ telesoho service only to power down the connection when done for
the night? Asked them to consistent ping my "static" address. "Can't,
    sorry.... dont have the utilities..."

    WTF!???!?!!?!!!

Round Lake,Lake,IL
$59 per month
"They provide service in my area"
"Random disconnects"
"Price is too high"
Pre Sales information:
Install Co-ordination:
Connection reliability:
Tech Support:
Services:
Value for money:

I originally started with DSL service in 2000 with DSL Networks. With a Static IP address. And after two years DSL Networks went out of business and I was switched to Covad through a safety net program. What I was switched to was a 1.5 meg/ 384k PPPoE.
The service was great with a 1.5 meg/ 384 k DSL line until November of 2006 when I started having problems with random disconnects.
I contacted Covad's tech support on the phone and I have people telling me to connect the computer directly to the modem, if it connects then the problem is with my Linksys router.
I unplugged the power from both the modem and router and when I powered up everything I had a connection, which only lasted 2 weeks.
I called Covad again, this time I get a tech that sounded like he had a chip on his shoulder about Linksys and started bad mouthing Linksys telling me that Linksys is "crap" and he only uses D-Link..
Ok so I did a hard reset on the Linksys router and power cycled the modem....... Still no connection. In a fit of anger I unplugged the power for both the modem and router and let them sit off over night. The next morning I powered up first the modem and then the router and I had a connection, which lasted two months until it went down again.
In February of this year (2007) I discovered a forum for Covad on DSL Reports and posted there. A Covad tech read my post and ran a test on my line and posted that the margins need to be at 10% minimum, my download side was at 9%. And another tech suggested try a new modem. I bought a new modem and still the same......... Random disconnects. They decided to issue a service ticket and send a tech out to my house.
A service tech came to my house and brought with him a Broadxent Brite Point 8120 Gateway. And guess what? A random disconnect the next morning I had no service for a half hour. I played with it and the unit would not get an IP address, but it had the DNS entries.

To make a long story short. In March, once the snow is off of the roof, I am switching ISP's and going to a local ISP that has wireless service and is offering synchronous 10 megabit service for $55.00 per month.

Covad has been charging me $59.95 per month for a 1.5 meg/ 384 k DSL service when other companies are offering the same service for $27 to $29.95 per month.

    UPDATE:

Covad closed the open ticket and never sent me an email asking for my input. They charged me a $99 service charge for the tech coming out, and they also charged me $99 for the Broadxent Brite Port 8120 ADSL Gateway unit that the tech brought with him to test the line.

The problem has not been fixed because I am still experiencing random disconnects and not having a connection to the Internet for periods of a half hour or longer.

I have had to contact the billing department at Covad about the bill for the service call and the gateway unit that the tech brought with him. My next step is to stop payment through my bank and contact both the Attorney Generals Office of Illinois and the FTC........... maybe this will get their attention to fix their problems.

    UPDATE Again:

It has been about 2 weeks since I have spoke with Covad and at that time Covad told me that the only way I would receive a credit for the Broadexnt Brite Point 8120 Gateway is to return it to them. So I asked Covad to mail me a return label so that I can return the gateway to them. Someone from Covad called me to confirm my mailing address but it has been two weeks and I have yet to receive a return shipping label from Covad.
A person from my bank made the comment of "sure sounds like a forced sale" And my bank has credited back to me the amount that Covad has charged me.

Now what to do with a piece of equipment that Covad does not want back................. Sell it on ebay hmmmmmmmmm?

Oh and the random disconnects are still happening.

    And another UPDATE:

Since I have disputed the charges through my bank and my bank has credited back to me the amount that Covad charged for a piece of equipment, which has been sent back to them, and the service call. Covad is trying again to bill me $264.39........ I guess I will have to notify my bank and this time the FTC.

Los Angeles,Los Angeles,CA
Contract price not specified.
CLEC party: Covad
"kind of fast answer to support calls"
"too many problems, stuck with 2 years contract, liers"
"STAY AWAY"

I have Covad's T1 line for a year now, after one year I had to open 5 tickets and call at least 4 times a month for problems. the router i was given is going down all the time and needs manual reboot at least once a week when you notice that all is offline. I had to drive to my office many times during this year in bad hours and weather just to reboot the router or wait for covad tech till they decide to arrive they usually make you wait around 4 hours and that is only afetr they will gladly send the phone company first.

I really hoped i could avoid another year with this but the covad billing department want to charge me $500 cancellation fee. bottom line I strongly suggest you stay away from this company and their T1 lines
