UPDATE: Unfortunately, MV has been defunct for many years. RIP. After years of excellent dial-up service I just went to 768/128 DSL last winter. Uptime is excellent, and best of all, you can walk right into the shop and talk to a real person. Try THAT at a big provider! Support your local small ISP, you'll be glad you did. I can't say much about their tech support, over the years everything has worked so well I've not spoken to them very much. I recommend this ISP to anyone in the state. (UPDATE: some confusion over wether my account was supposed to have been a static or dynamic IP was resolved despite some confusion at the ISP's end. Eventually a restart of their DNS server brought the account into full static mode and all has been smooth sailing since. Every city should have a provider like this one.) member for 21 years, 37 visits, last login: 207 days ago updated 207 days ago
When I moved from dialup to Fairpoint DSL, I kept my e-mail service at MV $5/month for e-mail that always works. member for 20.7 years, 3778 visits, last login: 11.5 years ago updated 12.9 years ago
Update 10/1/2008 Well I still have MV..I just upgraded to their 3 MB package and I am really impressed...I kept MV from the beginning as a backup connection and I had AT&T Worldnet/Covad for my connection. I had their 3mb down 368 up package and getting around 2 down and 300 up...mind you I'm only a 1/4 mile from the CO. Ive added a picture of the MV speed test....and its alot better than Worldnet Once again these guys come through quickly and the have a great product for a great price. Nothing beats the smaller ISP's. Update 5/24/08 i ordered 768/128 dsl and here are the results 730 Down 138 Up Not to shabby one bit Wow is what i can say about MV. I called around 8 pm a week ago I had Mike pick up the phone and less than a week later i had dsl. He set up a dry loop line for me kept in total communication throughout the process, and got the job done right. I really couldnt ask for more. And with MV as long as your a dsl customer they will lend you a dsl modem. I asked for a bridged modem and sure enough Mike came through and i went by the office and picked it up. I really would recommend this ISP to many!! Attachments: member for 16.7 years, 1174 visits, last login: 4.9 years ago updated 15.2 years ago
Great people to deal with. They have become good friends too. I have 768/768 SDSL service When everyone told me that I couldn't have dsl, MV (Mike) said he would get them out to test it. Low and behold, it worked and since I was running Linux (back in the late 90s), He was able to help me configure my server too. I have had some problems over the years, but all have been the phone companys problems. Every time, MV has been right on it and kept me informed of the results. Can't beat the service. I can't say enought good things about them. member for 21.8 years, 131 visits, last login: 9.4 years ago updated 15.3 years ago
This will sound like a paid ad, but it's not. I had a dialup SLIP account with MV back in the early 90's, when they were a tiny company started by a UNIX guru. There were quite reliable, their service extremely personal, and their support was extraordinary. I cancelled by account after a few years, and when I started it again, in 1997, they were no longer tiny; they were small, but the excellence remained. Instead of waiting for the owner to call you back in an hour or less, as in the old days, they had actual support staff who were there to answer the phone, and their support was still excellent. Only rarely would my modem get a busy signal, and MV was always adding phone lines and equipment; my relationship with them was superb. When it came time for a broadband connection, and my local cable company was a late adopter, I tried to get DSL. In the (relatively) early days of DSL I got mixed signals from everyone - Speakeasy, Covad, etc. It appeared that I was around 12,000 to 13,000 feet from the CO, and everyone (except Verizon) saidit would work, but no one could make it work. I actually placed orders with Covad and one other (I forget who), but they always backed out at the last minute, saying I was too far. Verizon, the local phone company said I was too far, as well, and I took that to be gospel. Then MV Communications started offering DSL, and I asked them to upgrade me. They were told by Verizon that I was too far, so I had to wait a few months. Then in afew months (that was about two or three years ago) MV started offering a longer-distance DSL/C, and I got it. The two other companies involved were ChoiceOne Communications and Verizon. MV coordinated everything, and the installation happened within 7 to 10 days, as I recall. There were no problems - things worked well. Performance was probably modest by DSL standards - 384/384 - but it was blazingly fast compared with my dial up, of course. It also has worked reliably for several years, with possibly 2 short outages - an hour or two at a time. And once in a while, although not much lately, I had to reset my LinkSys router to re-establish my connection. A couple of weeks ago I had an outage, and it took over a week to get it fixed. MV was, as always, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable, but they (and I) were at the mercy of ChoiceOne and Verizon. A total of three techs from ChiceOne and Verizon came to the house over a period of about a week, and eventually came to the same conclusion that I had - the problem was at the CO, and they finally had it working, again. During the outage I had nightmares about how they might never find the answer, and that I would need to use dial up again for the rest of my life. Fortunately, while it took a little over a week (plus the 4th of July weekend from the time that I diagnosed the problem to when Verizon fixed it, I am now back on the air and greatly relieved. The fact that MV needed to rely on the local phone company excuses them, as far as I am concerned. Their people did everything they could, and there was always a technician available when I called, even in the evenings. They are the reason I wouldn't ever consider changing connections unless I absolutely had to. That, and the fact that the local cable company is reported to be the worst ISP in the northern hemisphere. Conclusion: MV Communications is truly knowledgeable, well organized, professional, reliable, flexible, trustworthy, and the best ISP I have every heard of, in any hemisphere. I have a long (10 years!) track record with MV and recently added their DSL/V (over the Verizon network) residential service. It was installed faster than I was promised, works flawlessly, and is faster and cheaper than my old DSL (Covad/Speakeasy), which was very reliable. MV is also known for their excellent customer service, flexibility, and commitment to the local community. member for 21.9 years, 1 visits, last login: 21.9 years ago lodged 21.9 years ago
This review refers only to MV Communication's Dialup services - NOT DSL! I placed it here so that someone looking at MV Communications for DSL service can see somewhat of a "past service history." I have been a customer of MV's dialup (PPP) service since 1996 or so. They are far and away the most reliable and technically adept ISP I have have used. With a 56K modem I consistantly get fast and reliable connections and never have authentication, DNS or Mail problems. Even though I am a Cable Internet subscriber, I keep the MV account since it provides me with a reliable second connection any time I need it. They have a nice feature where if you do not dial in to their service during the month, they drop the fee from its usual $20 to only $5. If their dialup service is any indication, their DSL is probably very robust and trouble free. (If I could get their DSL where I live, I would dump my cable company in a second!) member for 22.6 years, 124 visits, last login: 14.4 years ago lodged 22.6 years ago
