It was late in the afternoon on December 24th and I was reading a customer review that mentioned he had a no cost install during the month. This was all I needed to give them a call and ask if they would do an N/C install for me as well. The local office was closed so I tried another number and to my surprise someone answered the phone. I explained I was interested in wireless business service for my home office. He took all the necessary information and within a few minutes emailed or faxed me the paperwork. Later I found out I was taking to customer support and not sales! Early the next week I got a call from the local sales office to arrange a site evaluation. Two days later the CPE was installed and has been operating 100% ever since.
One might ask what is the difference between my previous cable provider, business DSL and Nextweb. Previously I had a business account with Adelphia for $120/mo. Their upload speed do to system limitations was marginal for my application and when I did have a problem, it took days not hours to resolve it. I used to have a small office in town with 768/768 business DSL for about the same price as I am contracted with Nextweb. The difference is in the support and the fact that DSL/cable performance is still somewhat of a best effort as opposed to Nextwebs guarantee of service (SLA). At the time of installation the speed is checked to ensure it is at or above the contracted rate.
Nextweb is not so large of a corporation that they take their customers for granted and when I have an operational or system question, customer service has always been very responsive. I would recommend anyone who needs Internet reliability to seriously consider calling Nextweb.
Home Network Specifications:
Internet connection Speed 768/768, 5 static IPs
Linksys 5 port switch to allow direct Internet connection for video conferencing / VOIP equipment
Symantec VPN 100 firewall, static intranet routing and backup POTS modem
Linksys 16 port switch to computers, network printers, and a linksys wireless access point for my laptop.
Its been a full three months since I switched to NextWeb. I have been up the full time with no known outages and excellent transmission quality (QOS). I use video over IP (video conferencing) with excellent results (near zero packet loss) both to the UK and Asia. Keep up the good work NextWeb!

Two thumbs up!!!
Have nextweb for almost a month by now and could only say positive things about Nextweb -- the service and the internet speed by far are first class as a internet provider. Installation was done within 3 days of signing the contract and since then the internet has been running like a charm -- not even drop a second. Signed up for 500k and get close 990k most of time symmetric for $159 per month. What's a good deal comparing with T1 for $579 offering by SBC. At the beginning, I was very concern and skeptic about the reliability of the wireless internet, but now I totally trust the technology --- it works well even during the last big storm period.

From the point I first inquired with NextWeb to when the connection was installed, they were 100% professional about it. The salesman kept in touch with me throughout the whole process.
Unfortunately, there is some interference where I live which is disrupting the signal, giving me a solid 5-25% packet loss. Since they could not offer a decent level of service, they offered to upgrade my connection to a wired T1 at no cost over the local circuit. Since I am still within my 30 day trial period, I will be looking elsewhere for internet, but would not hesitate to try NextWeb again in the future.

"Expensive"
"If you can't get DSL or Cable for cheaper, this is a good alternative"

This installation is for my office, where T1s and a far away central station have renderred my DSL useless. (160/90 on a good day). I shopped for alternatives, like SDSL, Frame Relay, burstable T1, etc. All were very expensive, or very limited. The choice came down to SDSL or WISP. What made the decision was that NextWeb offered free installation for me this month. SDSL offerred free install ... after $800 worth of rebates! Also, given the T1 and distance situation, I was fearful that SDSL would not do the trick. So, I opted for the Wireless solution.
I have had this installed for 2 days so far, and everything about this company is professional, and very quick. Installation took about 2-3 hours, and the engineer took good care of my building while installing the antenna. Once installation was finished, I changed my IP address, gateway, dns, etc, and I was done.
This really is a much better service that I got from ADSL. Where ADSL seemed like a half-duplex protocol, this is certainly a full-duplex line. I can send and receive full speed without much impact on the other. I bought 384/384 bandwidth, and I regularly get that amount.
Now, being that I've only had it for 2 days, I haven't experienced any drop-outs like the previous reviews have mentioned. It seems to be a consistant line so far. Pings range from 18-100 ms, so that's satisfactory for what we're doing. (light web serving, and moderate web browsing).
Updated 5-18-05--
We've since upgraded our servce to a burstable 3Mbps line, and that has vastly improved our speed from the 384 line we had. The cost is $159 /month for 3Mbps burstable (guaranteed 512kbps up/down). These guys are really good... We've lost our service due to power outages a couple of times, and they've called both times to inquire about it. That never fails to impress me. Service is consistant, and speedy, we have never seen less than 1.5Mbps on average. I'm really happy with this service and would recommend it to anyone who can't get DSL or cable in their office.

I have been a Nextweb customer for the past 4 months, and have to say over all I am pleased with their service.
Nextweb tries to cater only to businesses, but thankfully they made an exception in my case. I live up in the hills, too far from local CO for DSL, and Comcast has yet to deploy their service in my area. A choice between wireless or POTS is an easy one to make.
The sales rep was professional, but not very accomodating. Nextweb pretty much has the marked cornered in the SF Bay Area, and he knew it, and was unwilling to deal or make the sale. Infact I orginally went with another, cheaper provider (Gatespeed) before realizing what a mistake I made.
Installation was difficult, and long, but I don't blame Nextweb for this. My location on a hillside made it very hard to get a clear LOS to their tower. Another, cheaper company tried before and failed. To Nextweb's credit, they stuck with it and made it work.
Nextweb is not cheap. At least not for a consumer who used to have DSL. $150 a month for 768kbps both up and down is scandalous, especially when you see speeds and prices Eastcost and Midwest wireless companies charge.
One thing I will say is that your money does buy professional service. Of the 5 wireless ISPs in my area, one was halting new subscriptions while they absorbed an influx of customers, another had gone out of business, another had been bought out (by Nextweb), and the only other company (Gatespeed) were disgustingly amaturish and sloppy. Unlike their competition, Nextweb is professional, and does everything it can to get your service working, and working properly instead of blowing you off once your installed.
The performance is fantastic. My speeds are slightly higher then what I purchased. Even the 10 - 13% network overhead is compensated for.
My only serious gripe besides the price, is frequent, (but short) downtimes. My service has some sort of disruption at least once every 14 days. Usually this takes the form of a 30 - 45min downtime. Just yesterday however, my connection slowed to a crawl (web pages would take 30min to load, or not even finish loading at all) for most of the day. By the next morning the issue was gone. Most of the time they are quickly fixed (yesterday was an exception) but really these shouldn't be happening so often.
Bottem line, Nextweb does have its problems, but if you can afford it and can put up with short downtimes semi frequently, I recommend this service. They have good tech support, and excellent performance. And if you're like me, and have no other choice, they definately beat dialup.

NextWeb initiated the contact to convert us over from Innetix to their service. They offered improved connection performance and reliabilty at an attractive rate. Two workers visited us on scene to make sure the fixed wireless link could be installed (they could see two of the distribution sites). They were ready to do the changeover (1 week) before we were (2 weeks). We were at something slightly less than the promised T1 up and down, hoping to get full-rate service.
NextWeb took over from our former ISP, Innetix, by replacing our fixed wireless link (2.4 GHz) with a new one (5.8 GHz) and rerouting our domain. They changed our connection during the two-hour installation, and we only had to change DNS addresses on our systems (preserving our IP addresses). The new link increased slightly increased our download speed and more than quadrupled our upload rate.
They installed the wireless link equipment quickly and most conveniently, did the routing and changeover on scene, and did not remove the old gear until after the new connection was confirmed operational. The outside antenna (about 1-foot square) connects to an internal box (power and RJ45 WAN) via CAT-5. Their 30-minute estimate slid to about two hours on scene, but that was not a problem. The work was performed at the end of the day, so the next morning we were all switched over.
Our role was to change two addresses in our boundary router and replace the DNS addresses in our in-house systems. We have static IP addresses that we did not have to change.
