Jul 2003 update: I-Link still rocks. They provide access to a nationwide network of dialup numbers too. That has come in handy while traveling. Wish they had an 800 dialup number too, for those times when their nearest dialup is not a local call, but that's not a big deal, it's only come up once for me.
Jan 2003 update: After a year with I-Link, I remain very happy with their service. Their tech support is responsive and informative. This is the best broadband provider I've had, and I've had three (others were Comcast in Michigan and SNET in Connecticut).
Original review follows:
The ADSL line is nominally 1500 down, I'm getting 1248 down. Costs $59.95/month compared to $44.95/mo for Comcast, whose much-worsened service I've cancelled. Startup fee was $198 plus $50 for a static IP. Ordered by phone, staff was helpful, informative, pleasant, relaxed. They faxed me a contract to sign; it's a 12 month term of service with no refund for early termination. Hope I don't have to move this year. They didn't quibble when I inked in a qualifier making the contract contingent on their ability to successfully provision a line of sufficient speed; try that with Ameritech!
The line was installed and active in less than 24 hours!
The self-install package arrived in 72 hours and was a piece of cake to use (I have had DSL service before which helped). Although their tech support is not 24/7, they responded promptly next morning to my midnight email about an installation question I had as a consequence of not using their install CD (their PPPoE server expects username@ili.net, not just username).
I-Link resells Ameritech/SBC DSL service, yet they charge $20/mo less. Ameritech's sales rep told me their terms of service don't permit home networks, whereas I-Link says home networks are fine. Sure, I could probably hide my home LAN from Ameritech indefinitely, but I'd rather do business with someone that lets me be above-board about my system in the first place.
The SBC install kit provides: - Efficient Networks Speedstread 5360 modem and power supply brick - data and Ethernet cables - 5 line filters for my phones - a splitter for the jack where I connect the ADSL modem - a combo splitter/filter for a wall mounted phone - install handbooks for Win95/98/Me/2K/NT and Mac - SBC software installation CD (I didn't use it, don't you use it either, get RASPPPoE or a router from Netgear or Linksys or somesuch)
The installation was painless. Everything worked on the first try. As noted above, I needed to ask about the username format, but that is the only issue I had. It was simple to find the mail and news server names on the support website, and I could access them on the first try.
From previous experience I knew not to install the EnterNet software on the SBC CD. The EnterNet version I used during 2000 was to be avoided. I don't know if the latest version is better. Get RASPPPoE instead, or better yet, the latest home gateway router from Netgear, Zyxel, or Linksys.

I ordered 1.54 down / 256k up with static IP. Because of the way phone service is connected in my area I could not bring DSL in on my regular phone line. Dave at I-link arranged to have an unbundled loop (basically a dedicated DSL line) installed. There was no extra monthly fee for this, just a one time charge by the Telco. Everything was up and running a full 2 weeks before they had promised. After set up there was one small glitch where the IP address that was returned by sites such as dslreports did not match my assigned address even though I had set it statically on my router. One quick phone call to I-link and they adjusted their database. After that all was well.
I have been getting a steady 1250 - 1300 down and a rock solid 238 up. I did a little speed comparison with my Comcast cable which has always been excellent;with 2.5 meg down most of the time. I downloaded a 70 meg test file on each connection. On cable it took 9 minutes, on DSL just 8. Doing a packet loss test showed 10% loss on the cable connection and none on the DSL conncection. I guess that explains why even with a slower downstream speed, in real world use the DSL is a bit faster. Two thumbs up !!!!
