Being new in Cedar Rapids I wanted to give a try to a different ISP, so I decided to go with commspeed. Easy setup, you can't really beat plug the modem into the power outlet and the cat5 into your computer, thats braindead simple. The strong points are that it's easy and I can take the modem with me and access teh interwebs wherever.. I've been using it for a month now, and its alright.

Recently they moved towers from somewhere pretty close to somewhere further. Whereas I used to get a perfect signal with the modem in my window, now I get two bars in the window.. I move the modem to my closet and I get 4 now. A bit strange, but definitely not too bad.

Latency can range between 20ms to 2000ms whenever it feels like it. Generally it stays around 100ms unless they're experiencing some major problems. For the most part, though, I don't have many problems with it at all. It's been pretty OK for the most part. Two noteworthy outages, lasting about 2 hours each.. both were in the middle of the night so most people probably wouldn't have noticed.

Not bad if you're looking for something different (or are avoiding the cable company :P), but then again, they're not really a major player in Cedar Rapids so I don't think they have the same issues here that they have in Arizona.

Probably the most unprofessional Internet provider I have ever used. They provide continuous excuses as to why they cannot provide the bandwidth you pay for, down to speeds approaching 60Kbps, while your contracted speed is 1.5Mbps. This has been going on for a year! The company will shut off service at any time, without notice, for service maintenance.

Commspeed

You are being too kind. Right now at 6:40 pm my download speed using 'download.comespeed.net' is 89kbps, typical for this time of day. I am paying for 1.5Mbps

Commspeed is the low life of Broadband service. They only survive because many subscribers have no choice other than Satellite. Satellite fees are highway robbery and you have a two year contract.

The only solution to the Commspeed problem is when true competition arrives. When affordable competition arrive CommSpeed with go the way of the dinosaur. In the mean time we stuck

CommSpeed uses the same frequencies that ClearWire and Sprint are going to use to offer nation-wide WiMAX service. Intel will have WiMAX chips in laptops this year. WiMAX will likely be as ubiquitous as cell phone access in the next few years. The way I see it, CommSpeed isn't going anywhere for quite some time.

Do some research before you open your mouth. You have absolutely no idea where this industry is going, or what is just around the bend.

Commspeed Chino Valley. Az

This is my first review of Commspeed and I wish I could make a favorable report.

I have subscribed to Commspeed as my ISP since June 2007. I purchase their premium service of 1.5Mbps (download).

Unfortunately, the service has never lived up to the advertised speeds. Using Commspeed’s own speed test (download.commspeed.net) I rarely see download speeds > 1.0 Mbps. Speed test typical results range from a high of 500kbps to a low of 80kbps.

The average speed degrades in late afternoon and through the evening to 139kbps. Up load speed rarely exceed 130kbps and pings are always triple digit.

Add to this the frequent equipment problems Commspeed seems prone to in the Chino Valley area they are an ISP of last resort.

I had the same service in CA provided by Sprint and it was flawless. Which I could say the same for Commspeed.net

Satellite internet through the only provider (Hughes) is too expensive, in all respects; up front equipment cost, monthly service charge and the mandatory 24 month contract., make this an undesirable option.

Commspeed is a horrible company

I heard that some of the people posting positive feedback on here are commspeed tech support people. Funny Stuff Guys
Commspeed is really poor service, really slow speeds and alot worse than dial up. Customer service is rude, and all I hear for the last 5 months is"Oh we are working on it, It will be fixed this week. Ohh Yeah Fixed this week my ass, it is 5 months later and speed sucks. I do not have any other options out in cordes lakes. I am willing to bet that if we get enough people together, we can file a class action lawsuit to put these smucks out of buisness and put someone in here that knows what they are doing. One tech told me on the phone that a piece of their equipment got wet and then froze up in the snow. What a lie, First off this is very critical equipment, that is not suppose to be in the snow. Duh, any moron knows that. Second it is suppose to be in a heated room, so that was a big fat Lie. A sales rep for commspeed says they have no intention of fixing the problem and that they are going to try and make as much money as possible before they update the equipment. Huh, Straight from a rep at commspeed. Do not get their service, and post if you would like to get on a list to file a complaint and maybe get enough people to stop this company from ripping people off. And feel free tech support guys to keep posting positive feedback on this page, but the truth is that the negative feedback is wins 10 to 5

Re: Commspeed is a horrible company

Look Down the Page, Sanjuaro, at cableone.net is an employee of commspeed, and what is funny is that he is using cableone and telling everyone to be happy with commspeed, This guy is the Moron. And the bl4ck guy is also a tech supervisor, funny how he is from Prescott Valley, where commspeed is located. Neither one of these guys use commspeed, and a tech just told me on the phone "he does not use commspeed because its not available to him thats why he uses cableone"

I find it absolutely hilarious that you people cannot fathom Finagle's Law (»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fi ··· %27s_law). I also find it very unbelievable that a sales rep was quoted as saying Commspeed will not fix their own problems. Most companies aim to stay in business for quite some time. Commspeed isn't going to do that by neglecting their service and essentially stealing from their customers. I'm sure there are many people who work long hard nights at that company whom you give absolutely no credit to.

Hey, maybe you should go apply for a job at Commspeed. Get your feet wet in the telecommunications field, then come back and complain about unexpected problems and the long nights you spent on getting major circuits online, and reaching some assholes expectation of perfect uptime for his $30/mo internet.

You sir, are that ass.

BTW, looks like some of the big guys have problems too.

Commspeed has a cancer

The cancer at Commspeed starts at the leadership level and permiates the organization. Forget getting service outside of normal business hours or on weekends. Should your router fail or request a static Ip remain static, you can also forget it. I've wondered why Mike Davis can't return calls to customers, his own people laugh at his arrogance. Ever try to contact their Corporate office outside of Prescott....forget that too. Customer service is poor, rude, and usually unwilling to help. I suggest that everyone with a bad Commspeed experience file complaints with the PUC (Public Utility Commission). Eventually, Commspeed's parent will see the light, more importantly if a competitor comes to town. What a poorly run company & it starts at the top.

I havent had a problem with connectivity in over 2 years (aside from the occasional outage - which happens from time to time) and If you are interested I have a history of speedtest.net results that are ALLWAYS at par with or ABOVE what i am paying for. Makes me wonder why there are people who are bitching...wonder if it is user error... i am willing to bet so.

Re: pebkac?

They consistently have the WORST speeds. The pipe out of their server is slow. Run a speed test to their server: Fast, run a speed test to ANY other website it crawls. Call tech and they will tell you "It's because the internet is loaded up". If you have ANY other choice, go with someone else. Their tech guys are rude and the service sucks. I only wish DSL would hurry up and get here.

You never get the speed you pay for. 40 dollars a month should get you excelent speed.

I am constantly disconnected from their towers and they never let you know when they are going to have "maintainance".

Online Gaming is impossible.

VoIP is a joke.

If you want something good get qwest. The only reason we haven't switched to it is because they don't offer it yet in our area. They say it should be here soon though and then we will be kissing Commspeed goodbye.

In this area there are not too many choices for broadband. Commspeed is a pioneer in this area, their system is sometimes stretched to the limits with all the new users signing up all the time.(lots of new residents move here all the time) I used this service for nearly 5 years, most of the time I was happy with the connection, but sometimes the service drops, and it is aggravating, but commspeed has always been good about getting things back to order as soon as possible. I switched from dial-up to commspeed, so even a drop in speed was still better than dial-up speeds. I have had no problems with their tech support.

I used the 512/128 package, which is priced at $39.99 per month. Commspeed supplies the modem, power injector and transceiver antenna, Included. (no monthly rental) When the system is running good, I sometimes got better than my package download speeds, but, it is not consistent. Upload speeds seem to have always been a bit slow, occasionally hitting 128 or so. (system upgrades needed?) Overall, I feel the service is ok, But, I now use Qwest DSL.

See attached record of speed tests from commspeed.

Once the system was installed (too a long time to get someone out) we were hot! I had asked the installer about static IP and he said to call C/S. I called and they set me up with a "fake static" it is set up as DHCP with a no expiration lease.

I went rounds with management about opening port 25 for my mail server. Bottom Line was the did not feel safe with opening that port in thier firewall. Not sure why that is a problem for them as it would open MY public IP to the world on port 25...

Other then that... all is well.

Commspeed

It worked well for a couple of years. A few weeks ago they needed to replace a part on what they call 'backhaul'. It is still not fixed. I am supposed to be getting 768/256. During primetime, my speeds are less than 200. I also get dropped frequently for a short period of time. There is another provider out here that claims 512/512. I don't think that their real-world speeds could be any worse then the 90/90 I get during the early evenings. Yavapai County.

I really like this service, I have had the speed promised. I used to use another wireless service but the speed was unreliable, Commspeed has given me what I am paying for. Plus my VOIP actually works. My only complaint would be the installer who had the dish off by about a foot, I easily fixed it myself. Other than that I have had no problems. I gave tech support a 3 because I have never used them. I have the 1024/256k for 59.95 a month. I will never go back to my previous service. Thank You Commspeed for being here in the boonies.Plus as I have said I can also tell Qwest goodbye.

I am no longer with Commspeed. There service continually went down and speeds fluctuated real bad. I now use AirTEL Broadband. They are new and the speeds have been consistent. I have been sold a 512/256k and am getting on average 1900/600k. It is nice. There customer service is great and they spent time making sure everything worked great before they left. I highly recomend them for anyone living in Wittmann. 623-535-5116 or Airtelbb.com
