****Orignal SDSL Order from 2001****

09/2001 Unable to give a full review as it is not yet installed. I have been very happy with the courteous customer service. I am a little disapointed that the time line stated 4-8 buisness days for Telco Line provisioning, and it has been around 14. Also I was told that they would know within the first week if SDSL was even possible on my line. I would sure like to know because if it is not I would like to place my order for a new wireless broadband service in my area.

09/2001 UPDATE: Recieved confirmation from Direct Internet that my line would be provisioned by Qwest by Thursday 9/27/01, I guess this is not too bad considering they are working with Qwest on this. We'll see how this goes. I was also informed that as Qwest has started line provisioning it looks like the 384 kb is likely very possible on my line. I was also informed that if they are unable to fullfill the original 384 KB order but are able to fullfill slower speed I am no longer locked into contract and can cancel my order.

09/2001 UPDATE: Was told that they could only provison 192/192 IDSL, decided not to do it as I am not interested in the higher cost of IDSL, they cancelled my order and it cost me nothing! (very pleased that it cost me nothing)

****New SDSL Order 2002****

09/26/2002 UPDATE: Well I have moved and it is a year later, I am trying this again at my new address.

Going for the SDSL 384/384, I am 2000 feet closer to the CO this time so should have success. I just submitted my signed contract by fax (that was a job as someone kept voice answering their fax line). The order was keyed yesterday and the request was put into Qwest for the telco line to be provisioned.

It appears the equipment is an Efficient 5851 SDSL Router with built in 4 port hub (cool)

Price is $104 per month, $279 total upfront cost with $200 of that rebated so actual upfront is $79

Static IP address and router supports NAT.

Was told that I am allowed to run Game servers, FTP servers whatever I want as that bandwidth is mine and I can use it how I want (Cool)

10/02/2002 UPDATE: Well recieved email yesterday that my line install commitment date from Qwest is for 10/03/2002 WOW!!!!! Qwest seems to be moving fairly quickly on this I'm impressed, as Qwest usually seems to be pretty slow at line provisioning. We will see if they are able to meet requirements for the 384/384 that I ordered.

10/02/2002 UPDATE: Wow just spoke to my wife on the phone and Qwest is at the house provisioning my line today (a day earlier than scheduled) woohoo!!!!!

10/03/2002 UPDATE: Well I got home yesterday and they installed a completly new phone line to the NID, and they also replaced the NID with what I suppose is the latest/greatest model. Still waiting to hear from DIA to see if they are able to honor the 384/384, and if so setup an install date.

:) 10/04/2002 UPDATE: Wow great news, when I got home yesterday I got a call from DIA and have an appointment for monday Oct 7th at 1:00 PM to have my router installed and have the line fired up. That is incredible considering I didn't put the order in until 09/27/2002 that is only 10 days from order until live. I expected it to take at least 3 weeks to a month, that is under 2 weeks, well I am very surprised and must commend Qwest on the quick line install, and DIA on the Install coordination, and the quick turn around time BRAVO!!!

10/07/2002 UPDATE: Well my DSL is no installed and active. I ranm several tests on DSL reports, and according to the tests I am getting about 90% of promised bandwidth . My ping is stable at around 100, and I am very happy to finally have DSL again, this sure beats QWEST DSL WooooHooooo! I am also very happy with the DSL router provided it is an efficient networks 5851 SDSL Router with built in 4 port hub (only 10/ base but oh'well).

10/16/2002 UPDATE: I am very very pleased with Direct Internet. I HIGHLY RECOMEND THEM. Very good ping times, 1 static IP address, very fast install, and excellent customer service. I worked directly with 1 person for the whole install (he would rather not have his name published) you know who you are. Thanks a lot "V". Also very proactive in letting me know the status of the order, and very quick efficient technical support (pop email settings on web site are for dial up customers not DSL so he helped me reconfigure). Bottom line is they are great "GO SIGN UP".

I have to say that the order process and install were very straight foward. I ordered the service, it was shipped within 5 days and after installing splitter/cable and modem, service was up and working. CableVision is using a funky looking 3Com modem which has some strange lights and drawings representing link/equipment status. The instructions actually commented on the styling of the modem and suggestes to place it in eye's view. No thanks this thing is pretty ugly! Speeds and uptime are also good. At times speeds do bog but this is rare. I'm not sure of the advertised u/d rate but I test at about 1.5M/500K (Not Bad). My only problem is with Cable Vision in general. They offer a terible Cable TV package with good internet service. $50 for basic cable and $40 for Internet + tax, my bill is $100/month. I am moving to Direct TV soon so I will be saying goodbye to me cable modem. High speed internet was fun while it lasted!
