Beannet has been out for more that a week. They say they are supposed to be back online tonight. Good thing I am not dependent on my connection.
After the outage, I did not call tech support because I was going out of town. The first unsolicited correspondence I got from them was one week after the outage started. I think if I was Beannet, I would try to let my customers know a little sooner that there are MAJOR problems.
I must say that besides last week, I've had months of continuous service from Beannet.

Got DSL which was fine until it went out over the weekend, then there is no one to call for three days - just an answering machine. I can't even tell if it is a general outage or it is just me, because their website doesn't say. How sucky is that?
UPDATE: Finally, they sent out an email describing the outage -- after the network was back up. Oh well.

THE LATEST: The DSL went out on 3-14-2002 but came back up late evening. Tech Support at Bean Net said they were aware of problems with servers and were cranking away to try and resolve the issues. Fair enough; stuff breaks.
Then, when it came back up my speed was MIRACULOUSLY faster. I am now getting a verifiable 900 k which is plenty fast. Whatever the issue was before, when they fixed their outage it also resolved my speed problem. I AM GLAD I STAYED WITH THEM.
3-2-2002 Bean Net is a reseller of ISP A-Plus Net; a tech support type at A-Plus had me test my DSL speed by downloading some big .gz files off their network, and this confirmed that I am only getting 250-300 kb/s.The guy at A-Plus Net said, "275k is not an acceptable speed for your type of line. I am going to open a trouble ticket, and see if there is anything Covad can do about this problem. I'll let you know as soon as I am able to get some information back from them. Thanks for being patient."
That was January 16; I've sent multiple email to him and to every email address I've got at Bean Net and I've gotten no response. Today is March 9. This is shoddy service, to say the least.
To top it off, my DSL has been down since yesterday (I have sync- all green steady LED's but I can't ping the router or DNS servers.) and it's Saturday- BeanNet doesn't have ANY support late nights or weekends! Unbelievable! So I can't even TALK to anyone at BeanNet until they open at 10 AM Monday!
If I didn't have my AOL dialup, I wouldn't even be able to post this update now!
THIS SUCKS!
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I ordered two 1.5 mb/s ADSL lines, one for the office of a nonprofit organization where I am the volunteer "IT guy" and one for my apartment from Bean Net in October. The paperwork got a bit balled up and I didn't get my DSL self-install kit until Dec. 18. When the kit came, it instructed me to set my TCP/IP stack to DHCP. I called Bean Net's tech support [(773) 304-2000 x 204] and they seemed very confused and said it should work. They said that the "DSL guy" would call me back the next day but he called the nonprofit outfit and not me, I never got the message. Finally I called him and he said, "Oh, our ADSL uses a static IP not DHCP. I'll have to get you an IP address. I'll email it to you later tonight, for sure." He never emailed it and when I called him two days later he still didn't have an IP address for me. I told him I wanted to wait until he got it for me, so he put me on hold a bit and then came back and gave me the address, DNS etc. I plugged that into my IP stack and got a connection.
==>You got to wonder if Bean Net is serious about DSL. I shouldn't have to chase down an IP address- it should be part of the DSL self install kit or the Bean Net Tech Support guy should have given it to me on the spot. ==
OK so now I've got DSL but I am paying for the 1.5 mb/s down/150k up line and I'm measuring 70 kbps to 250 kbps down and maybe 50 kbps up using DSLreports speed tests; results match exactly with the speed test provided at »tech.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp and it sure seems to me like there's a problem. Just in case it was my PC, I brought a notebook home from work which shows 1.32 mb/s consistently off our AT&T 1.5 mb/s ADSL line at the office, and it too showed 100 kbps-250 kbps here at home. I called Robert Sepulveda on Dec. 28 and he said he'd check on it. I've sent him 5 Emails and made a couple of calls since but I have no answer as to why my speed is so low. I understand that DSL is best-effort, but it seems to me that there's NO effort here, except the effort I've put into phone calls email etc.
And the ADSL line I ordered for the Foundation's office? No DSL self-install kit, no word on when one will come, no replies to my email or calls asking about the status of this line in the past two weeks. (Turns out that since we have a non-Ameritech local carrier, Covad doesn't know how to put in the DSL cirsuit, so BeanNet can't provide ADSL at the Foundation office. They refunded the money we paid for this.)
We paid up front for two years of service (using ITA credits)- two 1.5 mb/s ADSL lines. It came to $2500 or something; Bean Net's accounting had no problems collecting this. If only their technical and customer service group were as efficient in providing what's been paid for! The Covad/APLUSNET that Bean Net resells is pretty good I bet, once they finally deliver it.
By the way- I hear Bean Net is looking for investors.......

I have been a BeanNet customer for a few months now and have had many outages. I probably average 1 outage every 10 days. Most recently, I have not been able to establish connectivity for 2 days. I left two very polite voicemails on BeanNet's tech support line, and have not heard anything from them in these two days! Not a call back, or an email.

After finding a new apartment I immediately called Ameritech and had my phone moved to the new address. After three calls and a dispute over a deposit service again, ok no long distance, fine. I asked if I could get a dsl for the same location and was told no, well let me have someone call you. I then tried to order a covad dsl through suba.com and placed and order. During the arduous process of waiting for my internet to arrive I got a message from ameritech that I indeed was elegible for dsl and should call this number to place an order. I waited for more than a week befor calling ameritech to ask if they could get me a dsl sooner and was told I couldent get it @all. Go get'em covad!! Happy user for months, sharing it with the whole building and loving it.

I am also the moderator of this placecard, I feel like I must tell you that upfront, but I am our company's customer as well. I ordered ADSL service from BEANnet to my house in Berywn, IL and have been super happy with the speed and reliability. I used a Linksys broadband switch / firewall for security and to dhcp my local house network and everything works perfect. So, again, I work for the company but I am happy to be here because I know first hand how well the service works.
The package I ordered for my house was 1.54M download / 384K upload ADSL, with professional install (the self start kit wasn't available at the time I ordered otherwise I would have gotten that, the Covad install guy that happened to show up was a mid-manager and had not much of a clue, it was more of a self-install by the time he was done anyway, I think I showed him a thing or two). $99/mth, Static IP, and they gave me the Efficient Networks Bridge with 5 filters for other phones in my house.
