Akula went down yesterday. This has only happened periodically so far, so I didn't think anything of it and thought it would be on this morning. Well, I can't ping either their gateway or their DNS servers. I went to a cyber cafe and tried to hit their web site, but it didn't even register (nothing came up). In two days of calling technical support, I have only gotten voicemail with no message regarding the outage. Each time I tried to leave a message, the mailbox was full.
Their tech support has been so-so, but I am a low maintenance user, so I like to stick with the smaller ISPs. I can manage pretty much anything myself, unless there are no servers or gateways to hit! It looks like they just picked up and left. No one answers the phone and their web site has been gone for 2 days.
Another problem I had with them was that someone used their mail server to SPAM AOL members, so any email I sent through their SMTP server was automatically bounced, including the ones to support and abuse. As I get about 20 spams per day, and at least half are from AOL, welcome to my procmail filter. But I digress.
I sent several emails and left several messages, but no one answered. I threatened to change ISPs, no one called. Well, bye bye, Akula. I tried... You suck... One piece of business advice if you are still in business... answer the motherf*cking phone when it rings!
bway.net has a similar plan and agreed to let me switch using the Zyxel "router" that I bought from Akula. In theory, all I should have to do is change the gateway and make changes to my DNS server. I hope it happens quickly and bway.net can deliver better service. They also INCLUDE dialup access in case the DSL line goes down. I forgot how much dial-up bites, but, at least, with bway.net, I'll take it over nothing.

If you value consistent connections, helpful tech support/customer service, and your sanity, AVOID AKULA.
The only thing delaying my switch away from them is that I can't afford to have extended dsl downtime.
1. Tech support hours are non-existant. Either your call is redirected to voicemail or answered by a guy on his cell phone who is often not near a computer. If you do make contact, the usual answer is "reset your router".
2. Inconsistant billing practices. My most recent billing cycle consisted of my card being charged twice for two different amounts followed by an automatically generated email from Akula stating my account was overdue. I'm still awaiting my call back from their billing department. Their monthly billing date seems to change often, depending on their whims.
3. News server sucks. I gave up and got a subscription to Randori.net.
4. Poor routing/DNS/Security practices. First, they get their pipe from Level 3. Enough said there. When given static IPs, you don't get a subnetted block. They hand out whatever is available, leaving their users in a pool. Their version of Sendmail (which any security-conscious ISP should not be using) is over a year old and has a number of easy exploits.
5. Unprofessionalism. My line went down for about 3 days - I left numerous messages on their voice mail and received a call after 48 hrs. The first question out of the support person's mouth was: "Why didn't you email support?" I couldn't! My line was down! They do not prompty respond to voicemail, when you do reach a person they answer with "hello" versus some sort of greeting indicating that you've reached Akula, and email to support is neglected.
Avoid them. Please.

We have been using Akula for our hosting since 1996 (they are not new as someone posted), dial-up from 1996 to 2000, and DSL service since 2001. They have been great! When they offered DSL services, they converted our existing DSL service to their service in a matter of minutes. I know others complain about Verizon too, but in the past year we have not had any real downtime (there was a time when every time it rained DSL went down, blame Verizon for that one) - and we are a business very dependent on email.
No complaints!

Kudos to Akula. As a Lan consultant I work with many clients in helping them to setup and configure their DSL service. Of all the services that I have worked with I have found Akula to be the best. They are very reliable. They say that they will have your service activated in 7 to 10 business days. You will more than likely have it activated in 5 to 7 business days (hows that for fast service). Tech support is provided with a personal touch. Something very lacking with many of the other services. Now to the business of what this service is all about SPEED. I have signed up for the 768/128 residential plan and have always been able to maintain an average download speed of 761. Not bad for a residential plan. I have gotten nothing but positive feedback from the clients that I have recommended the service to. It is the only service that I refer new client to. If you are looking for a reliable, friendly and speedy service give Akula a try. You won't be sorry.
P.S. The basic residential plan ($49) also includes a static IP address. Thats pretty good considering that most other services don't offer static IPs for their residential clients and if you do want one they require you to open a premium priced business account.

We ordered the 384down / 384up ADSL (on our existing fax line) service w/ a static IP for $80/month (only $10 more than their residential service) plus an additional $15/month for unlimited dial-up service on a Wednesday. By Monday, Verizon was already switching over our line. By Friday (only 10 days after placing our order!), we were up and running! The up and download speeds are as advertised for half the price of a dedicated SDSL line through MegaPath (who took three weeks to tell us that the Verizon C.O. didn't have an opening for them/us).
The only down-side was that Verizon had trouble switching our line over and knocked our fax line out for three days - unacceptable for any business. At least it was our fax line and not our main voice line.
The hardware, a Zyxel Prestige 642R ADSL router, is a little expensive at $300 but works fine. It has only one Ethernet port but you can attach any old hub to it according to your networking needs. If you want to attach another router (eg for wireless), just switch it over to bridge mode.

I was an @Home customer. The service was ok until Comcast started taking over. Thats when the problems started. I spent 8 hours on the phone with them to get my connection fixed and it's still broken. A friend recommended Akula to me and said that they're the greatest. I've heard many horror stories and really wasn't into becoming one myself. I needed a fast reliable connection for work so I didn't have much choice. I gave Akula a call. It took about 5 - 6 days for my new Akula connection to become live. After hearing all the horror stories I couldn't believe my DSL was up and running in record time with out even a hitch. my connection speed is around 860/860 even though I ordered 768k/768k. Bottom line is This Company Akula ROCKS, BIG TIME. If you don't get your DSL with them, well I guess you might be just another horror story.

I'm very impressed with how fast and efficient these guys set me up and walked me through configuring my equipment. The service has been supperb from the very beginning.
I have been using the Internet for about 7 years, and dealt with various different providers, including DSL providers but have never seen this kind of dedication and customer support.
These guys rock!

I had been with Akula a while back when on a dial up but moved to Verizon when DSL became available in my area. Had problems with dropping connections and connections that were on but dead as far as recieving data. Changed over to Akula when they started offering it because they always had support people who took care of you personally and were able to work out many problems that I had while being a user. The kickers to going over, besides the more personal and knowledgeable support, was Akula could offer static addressing for the same price as verizon along with discounts available for dial ups (very useful when you are in the field or on the road and want to get on the net with a stable dial up), the ability to send and recieve mail from other email accounts (which verizon discontinued permitting), no longer needing to use PPOE (and all the cumbersome resource draining apps) to "dial up" to my DSL connection. The only problem I encountered was when Verizon switched connections and didnt complete the crossover for my connection but their tech support guru was able to get in touch with verizon while I was on the phone and got things straightened out by early the next day. All in all the connection ROCKS and so do they!!

I used to have service with AceDSL who used to be good a while back and then out of nowhere they turned to crap. The speeds decreased to something slightly better than a 28.8 modem. After unsuccessfully trying to have it fixed, I gave up and called Akula.
The sales person at Akula was incredibly helpful, and told me to cancel the service with AceDSL and specify the date given. As soon as I received that, Akula placed a connect order for the same day. My service was disrupted for an hour, at the most.
I have been using them for 3 months now, and had one problem which was due to Verizon's oversaturation of their routers. That, however, was troubleshot and resolved by Akula within a day.
Bottom line is, I am very happy with these guys. They know what they are talking about and are there to make sure you are happy.
