If you value consistent connections, helpful tech support/customer service, and your sanity, AVOID AKULA.

The only thing delaying my switch away from them is that I can't afford to have extended dsl downtime.

    1. Tech support hours are non-existant. Either your call is redirected to voicemail or answered by a guy on his cell phone who is often not near a computer. If you do make contact, the usual answer is "reset your router".

    2. Inconsistant billing practices. My most recent billing cycle consisted of my card being charged twice for two different amounts followed by an automatically generated email from Akula stating my account was overdue. I'm still awaiting my call back from their billing department. Their monthly billing date seems to change often, depending on their whims.

    3. News server sucks. I gave up and got a subscription to Randori.net.

    4. Poor routing/DNS/Security practices. First, they get their pipe from Level 3. Enough said there. When given static IPs, you don't get a subnetted block. They hand out whatever is available, leaving their users in a pool. Their version of Sendmail (which any security-conscious ISP should not be using) is over a year old and has a number of easy exploits.

    5. Unprofessionalism. My line went down for about 3 days - I left numerous messages on their voice mail and received a call after 48 hrs. The first question out of the support person's mouth was: "Why didn't you email support?" I couldn't! My line was down! They do not prompty respond to voicemail, when you do reach a person they answer with "hello" versus some sort of greeting indicating that you've reached Akula, and email to support is neglected.

    Avoid them. Please.
