They just put me on a new radio to alleviate some performance issues with oversubscription. Much better now.

7/31/08 - finally had it with the constant outages and speeds that had slowed down. Switched to Comcast business. Much cheaper and get 16 down /4 up now.

Mesa was *fabulous* for 4-5 years. We're in the fringe of DSL range and couldn't get DSL at all until 2-3 yrs ago, and then not reliable.

But in the last 6 months Mesa has totally cratered. For the last month our connection is down more than it's up. It's typical for it to drop out dozens of times an hour. Mesa came out and moved our dish (we have a narrow gap between trees) but they said our connection was "just fine" and "didn't drop at all." That's not what a PingPlotter history showed.

We finally gave up. Our other options are really bad, but not as bad as a completely unusable connection. Mesa has become unusable for us. (And we hear that we are not the only ones experiencing this.)

Update 6-18-2008

Discontinued service in November 2007 due to poor connectivity. Rumors I heard about the company indicated they were over subscribed on the their pipe. The source that told me of this was pretty reliable although I have no proof so I leave it just as rumor.

Update 8-14-2006

After 8 months I have not had a very good experience. They did a network change over and still have not really fixed things. I get constant network drops and inconsistent ping ratings. I see an average packet loss of 2% to 5% depending on the week. It is slowly starting to become a pattern of 2% one week than 5% the next than 3% and than back to 2%. I have checked my packet loss from my router to the tower so it is not a drop in the wireless. Last time I called tech support to have them verify I was not renegotiating between my antenna and the tower they told me that they have some bad equipment in the field. Well it is 4 weeks later and apparently they don't seem to care about fixing their problem. At this point I DO NOT recommend this service for anyone. I may have another update but I think I will be moving services to something a little more reliable.

Update 5-8-2006

I started receiving packet loss 2 months ago and created a web ticket. I ended up having to call to find out a status on the ticket as it just sat there with no response. When I called I found out no one was really looking into it. After I called they had an engineer update the ticket. He requested for me to ping and trace route specific routers between me and their main hub. I pinged everything he asked and never received a response back again. My connection cleared up about 2 weeks later but it would have been nice to know they considered it resolved. Especially since I am still seeing a dropped packet every 5 mins or so but that can be expected. Stories I heard for the tech I called said there was a bad antenna on the poll and the story I got from knowing someone who works on their systems stated they were doing a network change over and static routes were all screwed up because of it.

Now I am back to having serious packet loss (dropping 20 packets in a row every 5 to 15 mins) and I found out my ticket from before was still open. I am going to request a re-align and diagnostics of my antenna this time to make sure it is not the equipment on my house (which I don't think it is since the issue mysteriously cleared up once before).

So I have down graded this service to middle of the road and currently would not recommend this to anyone. All of this packet loss is starting to remind me of Earthlink DSL (covad lines). I really didn't want a land line for DSL but it looks like I am going to have to go that way now and I am sure not going to get Comcast Cable (Absolute worst cost for trying to get static IP's and have the ability to host servers. You could get a T-1 for the amount Comcast wants to accomplish what I have now.).

Update 1-13-2006

Have had the service for well over a month now and have had absolutely no problems with anything. This includes MMORPG games, VPN connections, downloading services, browsing, e-mail services and streaming services. I am very pleased with this service and would recommend this to anyone who asked me about it.

Original 12-7-2005

I have got to say the sales portion was great. I was moving to a new house and was able to setup an install date 2 weeks out for the day I got the keys. Service was up an running in about 1 hour from time the tech should up. I had to have the dish installed at my location due to some obstruction but service is working great.

I ordered the 2.5/1 connection with 5 static’s. Now the static’s are $10/month which I paid less for and got 5 useable IP's from my last ISP. Now what I mean by useable is that I received 8 IP's 3* went to router for various things which left me 5 to use on servers. With Mesa I was only left with 3 after router setup.

Best connection speed I have seen so far with Mesa is 2.4/1** which is about as close as I think I will get to my ordered connection. I have had no experience in latency even with the snow that had covered the antenna over the last couple of days.

In my opinion if you live in CO and can get wireless with Mesa it is better than Qwest as you don't have to purchase the phone line along with your DSL or pay the other taxes and fees and it is better than Comcast as you don't have to subscribe to cable or pay the extra fee for non cable subscriber or share your bandwidth with the rest of the area. Plus with Comcast you can't even get static’s without paying a fortune for a business account.

Best bandwidth and setup costs for the price.

* 3 were used. ISP used 1 for gateway, 1 for router and 1 for network

** rounded to closest whole number

I have to say with the max bandwidth you can get is 3 Mbits. It makes no difference the ping is all over the board and you will never get a stable connection to get close to it. I would say there speed is rated for peaks only at times. It seems like i am on dial up. The upstream is just awful its a caped compressed steam that will take you for ever to upload anything no mater what speed you have. I dropped my speed down to the 512 up 1.5 down just cause thats the max i would ever see from time to time. The tech support states that they don't guarantee there speeds and that mine is fine i am only 1/2 mile from the tower so the signal is very good its just there service behind it.

I have a Mesa tower about .75 miles from my house but due to trees and hills, I can't connect to that one. I was hooked up to a tower that was 11.97 miles from my house. Motorola Canopy technology used by Mesa is only good for 2 miles using a 5.2 GHz radio and only good for 10 miles with a 5.7 GHz radio. 12 miles is just too far for reliable service.

When the weather was clear, I got the advertised speeds but rain seriously affected my connection. The distance likely causes the weather to have more impact than advertised.

Everyone that I dealt with was very nice but unfortunately the service doesn't meet my needs.

UPDATE 04/25/07:

MessUp Notworkz has been down again since last night. Seems like everytime it snows, they go down. Still claiming they can't get to the tower to do upgrades - but a bunch of buddies and I took our ATVs up there about a week ago, and had no problems.

These guys just can't get their sh*t together no matter what! And they love to lie to their customers. Meanwhile, my Yukon connection is chugging away (I got a new dual-wan Linksys, so I can use them both at the same time now).

UPDATE 02/28/07:

Nope, doesn't work. Down again. Tried different DNS servers. I think it's the 1300ms latency to their POP that is causing me issues.

UPDATE 02/28/07:

ROFLMAO!!! These people are hilarious!!!!! Check this out:

"NOTICE: (02/26/07) - We are experiencing continued connectivity issues in the Teller county area and we have been attempting to get a helicopter to the 12,500 peak of Almagre mountain where our link is for this area. However the helicopters are unwilling to fly due to the low jet stream and high winds. Today we are attempting to get up the mountain with snowmobiles and snowshoes to get this issue resolved. However our technicians are facing "winter" conditions to get to the mountain top. We will keep this page current as updates become available. Thank you for your continued patience."

When you call for tech support, after you listen to 8 minutes of crap about how to power cycle your system, they say they are now having DNS problems. Probably why my neighbor hasn't been able to get online with them all day again! I guess they really do have absolutely no idea of how to run a network. I just can't stop laughing! Meanwhile, my Yukon connection is working fine, blazing along at a nice 7-8Mbps. I still have my Mesa account, maybe I'll go try it and see if it works today or not.

ORIGINAL POST

I have had Mesa Networks for about a year and a half. It was them or satellite which is even more of a joke. Anyway I had the 1.5M package and usually got about 100K down and 500K up. Not sure why more up than down, probabyl have their network misconfigured. Tech support is WORTHLESS and rarely even answers the phone. Can't tell you how many times I've left voicemails for these idiots and never heard back from them. Oh wait, no, I do, they always tell me to "power cycle." I've worked in the computer business for over 15 years and you can't tell me to "power cycle" because your crap isn't working.

Anyway enuf about how much they suck. Now on to the good stuff! I just switched to Yukon Communications. I saw a flyer and called and talked to Derek. He was a little rough around the edges with the details, but I figured I would give them a try. Free install since I was switching from Mesa, so I couldn't go wrong. The same guy I talked to on the phone (Derek) came out the next morning and put up their equipment which looks just like Mesa's. He offered to take their down, but I told him no, they'd proabbyl want to charge me $$$$$ for removing their crap from my house. I'm getting a solid 7M down but am only paying for the 3M package. Its $60 per month, free install, and I have their VoIP for $20 month more. It seems to work fine, havent used it too much though.

Nice advertisement

I've had Mesa, previously Peak Internet for almost 3.5 years now. Everyone on my street has them as well. I called in to you guys (Yukon Communications) just to see how your pricing was setup and you finally answered the phone after 3 tries. Is that a reflection of how you are going to run? Because that won't fly in this community. Anyways, I've never had to sit on hold for more than 10 mins when I call in and they are up all the time. Apparently you either don't know what you're talking about or you work for Yukon and you are trying to slander Mesa's name. I'm leaning towards the latter with the way you post replies like spam to everyone's comments. Good luck trying to make it against Mesa's awesome rep they've built in my neighborhood (Druid Hills)

Keep rockin' Mesa!

Re: Nice advertisement

@travister:
The message you were hearing before you called in is legitimate. Unfortunatly, there is to much snow to just haul the amount of equipment that Mesa need up that mountain. I know for a fact that they did hire a helicopter to attempt to fly up the mountain. I hope this is an indicator of what they are willing to do for their customers.
If there is a high level of RF radiation out in your area on the frequency being used, then you are going to have problems, no matter which WISP you use.

Mesa Networks started off good, then fell apart. Connection crashes several times a week for 30 minutes to an hour. Once every 4 - 6 weeks it goes down for an entire day, sometimes over 16 hours. Tech support never answers the phone and outage messages are either old or missing.

Just had another failure Friday night from 9 PM until 11 AM the next morning. Never did get anyone on the phone and voicemail messages went unanswered.

Their online "trouble ticket" system is a joke. You might as well go outside and talk to a tree about your problem - the response would be faster and also make more sense. No matter what the failure is, they always say reboot the antenna and router and call us later. My antenna has been restarted so many times that the plug is wearing out and it never once fixed anything.

Bottom line - this turkey can't fly. See if you have any other alternatives.

down again.. a call to tech support results in a voicemial box
can tracert a few hops out so problem looks like with their net again

update 7/29/06
This is becoming an everyday thing. Were down again. Have been since last night. A call to tech support has a message posted last night at 9pm saying they are down and have 'engineers' working on the problem and should be fixed soon. It's 9am now, still down. Still get voicemail when calling - this just still blows my mind how a company can expect to provide service form a voicemail box. I can't wait to be rid of these idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
--oh yeah, and get this, they have this crappy upstream called yipes or something - in order to get to just about anywhere on the internet my packets go from here to colo springs, denver, san francisco, back to denver, then out to the internet. Really stupid thing is that unlike real ISPs who have their DNS servers right on their own network these guys outsource it to someone in like dallas or something. so DNS resolution of a domain name usually takes like 3 seconds (springs, denver, sanfran, denver, dallas and back) for that amount of delay, the low speed and all the outages, there really is no difference between these jokers and satellite!

update 7/27/06
Down again. Tech support doesn't answer, just get a voicemail box. Left a message hours ago and still no callback. Sales said they would look into it and call back, but never did.
I heard that there is a new wireless ISP coming to Teller county and I should be able to get their service in the next couple months. I can't wait to drop these fools!!! Anyone else hear this rumor?

original post 6/26/06
These people are jokers!!!!!!!!!! Their connection is always up and down, latency is high, packet loss is all over the place, the connection sucks. Everytime I call I get an outage message that this part of the network or that part of the network is down for this lame excuse or that lame excuse, then dumped into a voicemail box which never gets checked. I send emails to their support people who tell me to ping my own router to check my service!! Why would pinging my OWN ROUTER help fix their problems!!!
I got their voice over ip service back when it was Peakinet and except for a few minor problems in the beginning I was satisfied until lately. The voice quality really sucked and people reported getting my voicemail even when I was not on the phone at all.
In fact right now my connection is down. I am hooked up to Badger Mntn and then it goes through Woodland Park. If I call their support line it says something in Cripple Creek got hit by lightning and that's why I'm down. But my question is if my service goes through woodland park is their network so crappy that an outage in cripple creek affects me too??? But maybe I just need to ping my own router some more!!!

The bottom line with these folks is that your probably going to get better service the same latency and much better technical support by going with a Hughesnet or Wildblue satellite - or just wait for DSL. Back when the service was peakinet we did have problems at times but their technical support was very helpful and we NEVER had to leave a message!

Stay away from Mesa Networks

Re: MMDS

I am scheduled for an install of this service next week,
so you will have to wait until then for my review. But I
can say that this is a different type of wireless than
Sprint. Mesa is using public spectrum with short distances
to towers. Closer to cell phone type technolgy than the
microwave technology that Sprint uses.

There is one other reviews here on dsl reports under the
Longmont CO:
»/town?tid=6927

Speaking to one of the owners at MesaNetworks, I found that
they limit residential service to 60 users per 6MBps cell
unit. That means around IDSL speeds up and down if everyone
were simultaniously using the system and if the unit you
were on was sold to full capacity.

The lower speed residential 512/512 has been bandwidth
limited to 700/500 ($44/mo) and the higher end residential
is limited to 1200/1000 ($58/mo).

They sell business plans as well. You can get 1500/1500
with uptime service guarantees, and 128/128 minimum
bandwidth guarantee for $125/mo. That is about the same
price as a Covad or QWest IDSL line from this CO location.

Due to the demise of Rythyms, I will have to give up my
384/384 SDSL line. I chose Mesa over a price increase
and speed reduction of IDSL that was the only other
alternative.

Check for a review in a couple weeks, and I will do
speed tests and ping results.

It is symmetric

I signed up for the 1mbit symmetrical service and I get just that and more. I usually pull around 50-100kb/sec off of most sites, fast ones give me 200 and up. I get 300-400kb/sec from mcafee.com. Uploads usually in the range of 100-150kb/sec. My only beef is the number of hops as mentioned previously, and the most recent severe packet loss, but that seems to be going away somewhat. Mesa is VERY friendly and customer oriented and solved all of my issues in a VERY short period of time. Definetly a keeper.

Mesa in Erie

I have been in contact with them over the past week. They were granted approval by the town of Erie to install antennae on a couple water towers, and should be scheduling installs soon. They hope to have service up in Erie by the end of October.

Everyone I have dealt with at Mesa is very friendly and helpful- based on first impression and a 30-day money back guarantee you can't really go wrong. Then again it's the only alternative here, aside from IDSL.

I was told to call on the 15th to see about scheduling an install. I'll keep updates coming.

I spoke with Todd from MesaNetworks this afternoon. They are installing a wireless tower on the Water Tower in Erie near the intersection of 119th and Isabelle. If you can see that tower than you'll be able to set up an install. They expect to have the install done by end of next week, with residential installs happening the following week (assuming successful installation of wireless tower).

I got the same story - "next week" every week. I can see the water tower they're using from my house - I don't see any new equipment installed yet.

I'd say more like "next month".

In the mean time, I've gotten Qwest DSL for now. Painful to get set up, but at least now I've got a connection. Speed is not that great, but it works for now until something better comes along...

What DSL did you get? I forget, are you in Erie or Lafayette? I'm thinking about calling Qwest as well but I don't really want to go IDSL. Covad seems to think I can do some sort of ADSL, although it will probably be slow, it'd be faster than IDSL.

But if Mesa could get their act together on installing those towers....:)

It didn't go. My neighbors across the street have some trees in the way. No luck for me. They mentioned that the old equipment would have handled that situtation better and that they might install it on the tower, but not likely unless there was a real business need (30 people needing it).

So I promptly went and ordered Earthlink Fixed IP DSL and we'll see if they can actually deliver (I'm about 15000 feet from the CO).

I did call MHO but their pricing structure it too high for not providing a fixed IP.

Mesanetworks - horrible

As other posts.. when it works it works pretty well. When it doesn't, there is no warning and is usually down for hours. I also wanted to add that the support stinks. I haven't had email for 3 years from them. Support says they will check into it, and NEVER call back.
Whenever you try to find out about an outage, you can't get through to support. You'd think they would promptly update an automated message about the outage, but they don't for hours sometimes.
I too am typing this using dialup at the moment because they are down. I use them to connect to my office in the springs, and have to makeup anytime lost. When this happens, and so far it's the 3rd time in July, it's extremely frustrating for those of us that don't have a choice of another service. When they were down because of the Cripple Creek lightning strike, I had my PC on a phone line that I forgot to take out over the weekend. Lightning fried it. If the service wouldn't have been down, I would have never had the phone line in it. I've had enough... but can't go elsewhere. If you have another choice... take it.

Yep. declining bigtime.

When I first had Mesa installed, things worked great. (Other than the installation, which didn't meet the electrical code and cost me a $250 trip for an electrician to fix thier grounding problems). For the first year, things really worked pretty well, with only an occasional, limited (less than 5 hours) outage. (We had sprint broadband, and although relativly slow, it always worked).

Over the past 90 days, we've had 60+ hours of outages or really bad service. Tonight, we have greater than 60% packet loss. I'd say it's been in decline, perhaps coincident with their posting lots of signs around here trying to get new business?

Customer service is a joke. Every menu in their phone system dumps you to voice mail, other than sometimes sales. Tech support? They should outsource it, it would improve dramatically, you'd actually get to talk to something other than a voice mail box.

Very fast when it works.
TONS of dropped packets, speed varies all over the place, very poor tech support.
If you have other choices, skip this WISP. Support rarely answers the phone. Connection goes down for long periods at a time.

UPDATED 6/29/2006 - Continuing problems with Mesa Networks. Right now my speeds are horrible - in fact, my dialup is faster. They supposedly sent the problem to "Level 2" but nothing is happening. Not even getting a call back or email response to the trouble tickets that have been opened. This thing is a real mess and unfortunately satellite Internet is the only other worthless option. Mesa Networks has provided me with terrible service and support and I do not consider the "service" worth the price.

This service was purchased by Mesa Networks about 1 year ago. Started off very well with fast speeds and good tech support. Unfortunately, things have fallen apart since then.

My download speed will vary from 80k - 2000k and is actually slower than upload on occasion. In the past month (June 06) the connection has been down for hours at a time. Tech support rarely answers the phone and is also not very good at responding to messages. It takes up to 5 days to receive a response when trouble tickets are opened.

I am sitting here writing this review on dialup because my connection has been down for over 11 hours. Calls have been made and messages left without any response. Very poor customer support. To me it seems like they have no clue as to how to handle problems.

If you have any other choice, you might want to skip this one.

upload greater than download?!?

Sounds like they have a hidden node problem, thats a bad network design, if done correctly this shouldn't happen. Also they are probably using 802.11b/g gear which is most likely over saturated. Look for another provider, there are several around.
