I have been a subscriber since late 2001. I never liked DSL and Cable was the only other choice in my area at the time.
I have had the $49.99/mo. package since day one started out at 3Mb in 2001 and they upgraded it to 6Mb sometime around 2003 -2004 and as of 2006 it has been upgraded to 8Mb w/12Mb Powerboost for big downloads.
The install was extremely fast and easy since I already had Cable for my TV took about 10-15min before it was online.

I am moving my ATTBI account across town. Went to the local ATT Cable office and ordered the service. When I asked for Internet as well I got a quick "we don't do that...they don't tell us anything"..."call the 800 number".

I called the 800 number and the rep was competent, but he said he had to cancel the original provisioning order for the TV side and re-provision it as a TV/Internet install which changed the install date/time. But the date offered was acceptable.

He offered cable telephony service, but to be honest, it cost more than a AT&T cell phone would, so I asked him "why would I consider it if it cost more than AT&T Digital One Rate?" He withdrew the offer and apologized.

They recommended that I discontinue my old ATTBI account and open a new one. ATTBI recently merged TV and Internet billing and without my permission merged my internet account with my fathers TV account. Despite 2 notes on the account not to do so, they did anyway and they cannot seperate them. I thought this wouldn't be a big deal I will just have tech support move the email over. (Read on!)

The installers arrived at 1:45pm (they were scheduled between 1-5pm). A quality note, they slipped on carpet covers on their shoes so they would not soil the carpet. A small but nice touch. I requested cable drops in three rooms and it was a professional installation. The only issue was my port outside was not labelled so they had to use the locator to find it.

They used an RCA cable modem and the installer placed filters on the 2 other drops to keep out modem interference on the TV's. Another nice touch. Here is where it gets interesting. They are no longer using the ATTBI provisioning method, but using COMCAST software based provisioning tool.

This requires a software install on at least one PC (I have several) so the Comcast software can complete the provisioning and account setup. The software from Comcast bombed when requesting the email address, first it said it wasn't available then it hard failed when i entered a second choice. Restarted the PC and ran the software again and it said that the provisioning was offline and not available. The tech downloaded a newer version of the software and this time it worked and in fact the original email address took. However, they are no longer using the ATTBI.COM domain now, they are using the COMCAST.NET domain for email accounts. My old account (that I have to cancel) is on the ATTBI.COM domain. The tech was not confident that they could xfer my old account over. I have yet to confront a tech support person on that...wish me luck!

The performance was great. I figured it might be as I decreased my distance to the head end by nearly 3 miles. Per this site roughtly 1.7Mbps download. I know cable is not as distance sensitive, but I was curious. Still DHCP, still rated at 1.5Mbps.

Just beware ATTBI customers....COMCAST is closer than you think!! The tech said ATT branding will be gone in Feb. 03.

Wow, have I been on this long? Update (7/2/2007)

Been on ATTBI now Comcast for 7 years! A few hiccups here and there, but it works. Would like more speed for the dollar however.

(1/28/2008)

8 years on the service now. 6Mbps now. (was 1.5Mbps at the beginning, way back). The Speed Boost kicks in now and then, but not really effective for day to day activity. For what I pay, this should be 10Mbps w/o boosting.

December 2007. I decided that I should write something after getting hounded by the "system" to do a review. SNET..SBC..ATT has been great no problem. I’m still on the Pro tier and paying ~$25.

January 05 - Switch to SBC Yahoo from Comcast because I wanted to cut some of my cost, didn't really need the speed of Comcast. I’m happy with SBC DSL so far.

03/19/04 Well, Comcast upgrade speeds in December so now I'm getting 3400/244 consistently. Can't really complain about the service, it fast and reliable. Even though I'll never hit it I got to say that I'm a little concern about Comcast "hidden caps".

9/12/03 A little over a year with service. Started with ATTBI then they were bough out by Comcast. I have not seen any difference in service. Still good, no complaints, email address switchover went smooth. Speed testing consistent 2 ~1750 / 240

Scheduled installation was 9 day after I order the service. Tech came on time, was very professional. Setup modem (which I am renting @ $3 /month), installed splitter / filter on outside wall of house where existing splitter were. I had already installed the cable line myself a few years back when I finished my basement, so the tech did not run any cable lines. He check signal strength and line quality, explained what he did to my wife ( i was at work at the time, so all this information on the installation is provided by my wife) and left an installation CD with her. When I got home, i popped the CD into the computer, answered the questions and approx 30 minutes later was up and running.

That was a little under a month ago and I have been running without any problems. My speeds have been very consistent at 1440 down and 230 up. I have had no disconnects that I am aware of. Bottom line is that the service has been very good.

Here’s the spec:
1500/256 speed, dynamic IP cable connection.
Paying $42.95 per month for service and $3 per month modem rental = $45.95
The modem is a Motorola Surfboard 4100
My computer equipment is a Dell Dimension 4100 1Ghz, 256M RAM with a Netgear FA311 NIC.

For the first two weeks the modem was connected directly to the NIC in the computer. Now I have a Linksys BEFSR41 router in place between the modem and computer.
Update 12/20/02
Well, I have had this service for four months and a got to say that I'm really happy with it. Only had one outage as far as I can tell and I just cycled my modem and everything was ok. On top of this good service, they just increased our download cap from 1500 to 1800. I'm now test out at around 1780 / 245. I'm very happy!

3/1/03 Switch over to Comcast is/was seamless. Only problem is that I will have to switch to a new email domain (from attbi.com to comcast.net). They will be forwarding all email sent to the attbi domain to my new address thru December 04. This should be enough time.

Re: The Router

It's been my experience that the router doesn't slow things down noticably. I do speed tests through a router and they come up with what I have seen folks talking about here.

However, you will see some slowdown overall if you load up the router with traffic. e.g. If you are downloading binaries on two PC's simultanously and also copying data around from one PC to another at the same time.

I haven't seen any problems if I am just doing casual browsing on two PC's in the network.

One thing you might want to try is start a binary download on one PC and then do a speed test from another. Then re-do the speed test without the download going. You might want to repeat the two tests a couple of times to consider general network fluctuations.

Hope this helps..

Here's my speed test history since I got ATTBI turn on 8/16. I installed my router on 8/28. The first speed test on 8/28 (time stamp 21:11:09) is without the router. All other speed tests done after are with router installed It sure doesn’t look like it affects my speed.

I have had Comcast for about 2 months now, and it's still running strong. I'm so happy that Comcast upgraded all the lines in the Chicago area. The connection has never once dropped, even at peak hours now I still download at about 3.2Mbps. A lot of times when the power goes out in my area, I fire up the generator and I'm able to get on the net. The one thing I am a little upset about is the upload. I have buddies that have the SBC 1.5Mbps/384Kbps package. The upload is awsome! I wonder why Comcast isn't offering that for the 3Mbps customers? Not to mention the upload is always bouncing around. It never really sticks around 256K. It almost always drops to about 215K. I would like to upgrade to Comcast's 4Mbps/384Kbps package, but I don't need 4M downloading. I need a good upload because I am a webmaster for many clients. If DSL was in my area I would switch for this reason alone. Other then that, Comcast seems to really have there stuff together in my area. I wish it were the same for everyone else.

Updated 1/21/05

Connection is up and still running strong, I've had this service since July and it still have failed to ever drop. Pings are always around 50ms. My speeds are still aroung 3.3Mbps/256Kbps. I can hardley wait untill they upgrade again in March. But I'm still a little upset about the monthly. It goes down if you buy T.V. service, I feel like I'm being robbed. But I still can't get over the fact that it has never gone down so it rocks!!

Updated 2/24/05

Well Comcast has pulled threw again. I got my free upgrade! »/speed ··· 09307260
The improvement in the upload speed is unbelievable. After this one upgrade alone I really don't feel like I'm being robbed for 4Mbps. It's a lot of bandwidth and a lot of ISP's don't offer it. And still it remains that the connection has never dropped or been down. I hope to continue this winning streak of broadband in my home.

Updated 4/9/05

Well on 4/7/05 I had my first outage. It was the nationwide DNS issue. My internet was out for about 2 hrs. Not too bad, I can live without internet for a few hours . And I found out to my stupidity that I'm currently paying $65/month for service and all's you need to do is order basic TV service and your monthly goes down to $45/month. That is definently robbery to charge more for internet because you don't have TV. But another thing is after I had the upgrade is my signal levels dropped dramiticly, when it's 70 degrees out im at -15db. So I'll have a tech come out pretty soon.

Update 11/19/07

I moved and hopped to DSL service. Comcast keeps jacking up their prices so AT&T just seemed like a better deal since it is available where I moved.

Comcast

so you're paying $60.00 per month for Comcast internet service?. don't you think thats a little too much money for a 3.3Mbps/384kbps connection. I would recommend that you switch to a dsl provider that is cheaper and that has faster uploads like SBC yahoo dsl($21.00/month) or Verizon's dsl($29.95/month). Verizon's connection speed is just about the same as Comcast's. 3Mbps/385kbps.
I think that the upload problem is caused by the connection's bandwith sharing with other cable users in your area or county. Dsl service does not share any connection bandwith because it runs over your telephone line. If I was you I would rather get dsl instead of Cable.

Re: Comcast

Alot you know, I am paying $29.99 a month for my internet and 39.99 for cable TV. Last time I checked that was a pretty good deal compared to the $45.99 regular internet price. Got a hell of a package deal here in Illinois. As for DSL, tried it, used it, didnt like it. I fought with them for 3 months while my download speed varied from 384k to 768k instead of the 1.5m they promised. There was nothing they could do so we mutually agreed to cancel the service without the early disconnection fee.

Have been having same billing problem since service started. moved in Feb 2005. I wanted to have two additional jacks installed for internet & another cable TV. FST came out and did everything but install two additional jacks. I was charged 166.70 for him to do nothing. I disputed this amount for 3 months before another FST came out and confirmed that no work was done. They then credited back the 166 but didn't want to credit back the bounce check fees I received because they overcharged me. It is now Nov and still dealing with issue. My service was disconnected 6 times in Oct because of the "past due balance" (bounce check fee) after one person would say the money would be credited but it was never done. I am literally calling every week to have the service turned back on. Always having to deal with someone with an attitude as if its my fault their agent lied,.. as if its my fault they overcharged me. Even their corporate office doesn't help. I have filed a complaint with the better business bureau and now they are going to put the credit on but don't want to do anything for the Oct bill since it was off half the month. Thinking everything was finally over tried to move service to new address and was told I would have to pay the past due balance so I'm back to square one.

Comcast Bills

I switched to the comcast triple play..... supposed to be for 99 dollars a month. Haven't gotten a 99 dollar bill yet. I have the arris modem and two digital boxes. The modem is 3 dollars a month and each box is 5. My bill is usually 135. Somewhere there is a logical set of fees and taxes and fees for the taxes. One day I will get a 100 dollar bill. Hopefully......

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin makin trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one lil fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in bel Air'

I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suite case and send me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.

First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orang juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Bel-Air Living like?
Hmmmmm this might be alright.

But wait I hear the pricey booze, wine all that
Is Bel-Air the type of place they send this cool cat?
I don't think sow
I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air

Well, the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop and yelled my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested
I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightening, disappeared

I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rare
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air
