It started when I received a flyer indicating Comcast HSI was now available in my area. Finally!! I waited two years for this day. So, on 1/6, I called and signed up. I got a 3 month promo of 29.95/Mo for the first three months. According to the sales rep, I just missed the 22.95 offer. Whatever. I was scheduled for the following Monday morning, 1/12.
The big day comes, and at around 10:30, the tech arrives. Very thorough and polite. He checks my wiring, replaces a faulty splitter and some frayed, cheap cable, checks the signal, and all is in perfect range. So he connects my modem, a Motorola SB5120 and it obtains block sync right away. I connect the modem to my xp machine and fire it up. I tell the tech not to install the software as I know the registration process for SAS. Run through the registration, not working. Doh! After checking, I find there is an error (mine) in my proxy settings and quickly correct it. After completing the modem registration, BAM! Up and running. Of course, you know the first thing I did with my new broadband connection was run a speed test right here at dslreports.com. Hitting the caps at 3.2Mb down/249Kb up. I'm happy!
Since then, I have set up a smoothwall firewall box and my home network: Two WinXp boxes and a Win2k Adv. Server box through a Linksys 5 port switch. All is well and good with the world there. There was one minor hiccup a few weeks ago where the speed dropped to a crawl for about an hour, and that was at a time when I should've been in bed anyway.
In regards to the infamous "invisible caps", I'm not fazed. However, if I receive a letter (which I doubt), I'll drop it like it's hot and go back to dialup, as hard as that may be to do. I won't waste my time or Comcast's with the jerkoff dance.
I set up my email accounts w/o difficulty, and they seem to work fine, but I go through a seperate provider for my mail anyway so no biggie there.
As far as Tech support goes, I haven't had to call for anything, and I won't need to unless all my equipment is ruled out on my end. I know enough of what to do so I can avoid calling support for the most part (I meant to leave the radio button/s unticked by tech support for not rated but, oh well...).
Overall, the service rocks!!! And a big shout out to my installer who did an excellent job!
UPDATE:
Everything is still rolling smooth, no complaints, really. I think i could get the 4Mb d/l in my area, but I don't need it. The speeds are consistently stable overall.
UPDATE: 4/28/05
Still no beef with the service (unless you count prior DNS related issues: I never used Comcasts'). Still lovin' it!
UPDATE: 5/20/06
After a move to outside of Atlanta, still going strong. No complaints. Can't comment on things like support because, frankly, i never needed them.
UPDATE: 11/207
Still no probz. Powerboost is very interesting, and my home network has grown. Connection is still rock-solid. I'm blessed...
UPDATE: 5/16/08
The connection is still good for me. Network now incudes a PIX 501, a 3500 switch, a Wii, an xbox360, some more computers and a partridge in a pear tree...
UPDATE: 11/22/08
Nothing new to report, except maybe the new speeds coming to the area.
UPDATE: 7/12/09
Still no issues. Recently got CDV and dropped my phone line. Everything still works! Curious about when D3 comes to my area though...
UPDATE: 1/15/10
The service is still swell. Some issues here and there w/CDV, but minimal at best. I have faster speeds. Good stuff...

Good Luck
The quality of the internet service and connection is so/so. My speed is nowhere near the amazing speeds you see in the Comcast TV advertisements. Dont be dazzled by speed, if there are quality issues. I often do DSLREPORTS speed tests where the ping rate exceeds 90ms. Unlike DSL, the ping rates and speed can fluctuate greatly with Comcast.
I have Vonage VOIP phone service, and when someone in the house is downloading, watching YouTube; Comcast Internet connection cant seem to handle multiple use and causes my Vonage to have choppy calls.
Getting resolution to billing errors with this company has been frustrating, as there seems to be an endless parade of incompetence and/or intentional company misrepresentation.
I would urge extreme caution to anyone who purchases the Comcast service as a response to a promotional price or offer.
During the fulfillment of Comcast special offers, you may encounter, as I did representatives unaware of your specific promotion, initiated by other Comcast sales departments that is unique to your case. What I have learned is there can be hundreds of different promotions offered by Comcasts multitude of sales channels. Because these matters involve Comcast employees and/or resellers, retailers and other 3rd party marketers who appear to only be trained for their specific department and duty, I am unable to fully accuse Comcast of fraud. However, when begin to look at the forest rather than a single Comcast tree; the elements for an elaborate systematic corporate bait and switch do seem to exist.
When attempting to resolve issues, every step of the way was met with a parade of Comcast reps who often spoke in Comcast-ese, a language intending to confuse and tantalize the customer. When that representative looks at your account and fixes what they found to be an error, and proceeds to communicate their disbelief as to how this could have happened; BEWARE.
Never allow or grant a Comcast rep to change your original promotion. They may tell you that your promotion doesnt exist and they have a similar promotion they can provide you with.
Remember that each promotion is unique, and carries with it as you can imagine, its own slate of fine print and conditions. I recommend using a software program call MiaRec »www.miarec.com to automatically record all of your phone calls to Comcast. Im not a lawyer, however when you call Comcast, their phone announcement states calls may be recorded and/or monitored. After each and every communication with Comcast, the audio of call should be thoroughly reviewed, and notes taken.
Update: 1/12/2010 Comcast has handled my account in the worst possible way. I feel like i am being raped again and again.

We paid extra tp gp tp the Ultra Plan 22/5. We still get 30 down but abpout 8-10 up. We should be getting 50 down with PowerBoost, Comcast is working on it.
Here is an update for 2009, we switched to Workplace with 16MB down, no cap, static IP's and phone service. It is much better than the personal service, mostly due to the SMC router/modem and a new RG11 drop. The signal is good, speeds vary, with better uploading.
After many improvements have made, we are seeing a big change in our HSI and HDTV experience. When Comcast takes over a local area (AT&T) it takes a very long time to make the proper changes. Cable Technology requires a lot of maintenance, something that CT never did. Only time will tell. Wish there was competition, to speed up more changes.

11/04/2009: Love the connectivity and speed increases, but the value for the money has dropped. While they offer "security tools" they don't run on anything but XP/Vista 32-Bit. no Mac support and no 64-Bit Windows support. My wife likes their web portal.
Upgraded to Triple Play bundle had to convince the technician that he really did need to bring the HDMI equipped box I asked for during the upgrade call. His take was that thee wasn't a difference between component video and HDMI. The reason I'd asked for it was cable management, plus I had a new TV and wanted the highest quality picture I could get. He had concerns about the signal strength at the end of the run but didn't do anything w/the tap on the pole to increase it. Because of this the picture/sound sometimes stalls and there are audio quality issues.
11/15/2007: No changes. Speed is great. Haven't had a reason to use technical support.
Sometime between the reviews: When Comcast is operating properly it rocks, but lately the road has been bumpy in the Chicago area. They've had numerous DNS outages, Router saturation, routing problems, various other service related outages, and maintenance done at prime time.
The fact that they would do maintenance during prime usage times without notice, have had these numerous issues, and customer service is bumpy at best is still holding them to a 3.5 of 5 (previous rating was 3.5 of 5).
8/11/2006: Connection reliability dropped to 4 (previous rating was 5) and tech support fell to 3 (previous rating was 4). Maintenance or outages still occur at inconvenient times (usually prime time), and customer support wasn't as helpful when I had an issue with the data side this time around. They said that since my cable TV was still functioning they'd have to do a truck roll because it was a problem with "my cabling." Turns out that the data side came up in less than an hour.
8/15/2005: Customer service rocked when I purchased a SurfBoard 5100 cable modem and requested that they add it to my account. They did everything quickly and stayed on the phone until I completed a couple of speed tests. The recent upgrade to 6MB down is great, and they've added numerous "features" that make them rock over SBC/Yahoo DSL in my area. Connection reliability rose to 5 (previous rating was 4) and tech support rose to 4 (previous rating was 3).

I ordered the 3 MB down/256k up package on a Monday from www.comcastoffers.com, got a free cable modem, a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble, and $19.95 for 6 months (after which it is $40/month). The modem and self-install kit arrived by UPS on Friday, and I was up and running after a few hours of dealing with wiring issues (I live in an apartment building with ancient wiring and the old A/B cables... the trick was to hook the splitter up to the A cable and not the output from the box that joined the A&B cable).
So far I've been pretty happy with Comcast... we'll see how it goes!

Update Feb. 1, 2005: My connection speed dropped to dial-up levels tonight. When I called Comcast technical support for assistance, the Comcast rep. got extremely upset. Apparently they have been doing "speed upgrades" in my area, and he told me he was "sick of all you f-ing idiots calling in to complain that our service wasn't working." He told me I could either wait "a couple days or a couple weeks" for the problem to be fixed, or he could send a technician out to my house who would probably not be able to do anything and that I would probably be charged for that call.
My apologies for being an "f-ing idiot" and expecting my service to work. I've never heard of a company's service rep's being so rude. I just don't understand it. Hopefully the service will be back up to normal in a few days, and I won't have to call again - talk about an unpleasant experience!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------
Update Mar. 7, 2005: A Comcast rep. called me at home and said that they had identified a problem affecting the speeds of customers in my area after the upgrade and that it had been resolved. My speeds are back to being what they should be (I'm getting about 3.5 Mbps, which is about right for my setup).

I've had essentially the same expanded basic cable service for 20+ years, under different company names. For the most part I've been satisfied.
On Demand has promise, but so far its free programs remain disappointingly limited. I seldom use it. I find it infuriating that Comcast uses On Demand programs to tout "1000's of HD choices". (Not the use of "choices", not channels).
The Comcast left hand never seems to know what the right hand is doing. They never seem to know what (or when) they intend to do with their system until they actually do it. The names for tiers seem to change with the weather.
The Comcast people I've talked to by phone or in person have all been friendly and helpful. But I hate their website. It is difficult or impossible to use to get tier channels or pricing info. Important conditions are buried in obscure footnotes.

Contract price not specified. "Internet service seems competitive" "Video service is lacking" "Verizon FIOS might be better"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection Reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)

My apartment complex is wired for both Comcast Cable and Verizon FIOS and right when I was moving in, the Verizon FIOS installation was being completed. I decided to go with Comcast Cable since I was a previous customer at my former residence and the fact that I knew little about Verizon FIOS.
I initially got double-play, internet + video, for $59.99 a month. Speeds were approximately 6MB down/1MB up, but have doubled since they installed DOCSIS 3.0 in my area.
Now that I have completed one year with them, my rates are going up, but I did manage to threaten to switch to Verizon FIOS and get my internet rate down to $29.99 a month for another year (that's at the new 12MB down/2 MB up).
Here's my speedtest back in February: »www.speedtest.net/result/405327043.png
I am very happy with their internet service, but the video service is the same old meaningless spread of channels with a few HD channels. I would really like a video à la carte service since I only watch a handful of channels.
Verizon FIOS has been bugging me to switch and they seem to have a better internet service in terms of down/up speed and their video service is offering more HD channels.
I don't know. I can't decide yet. I may just get internet service and drop the video service, if that's possible with these providers.
