Service is solid no outages. Can't say that for the people in my complex on cable internet.

I'm not 100% sure what the cost is. I have to pay $237/mo but $125 is included in my rent and the other $112 goes to Cox. I have 1GB up/down along with Homelife security and Contour Premier with 6 DVR and a 2nd receiver.

Somehow when we placed our order online the Fast Connect Kit did not get shipped to us. We then called Cox a few days after our kit was to arrive and they said the kit would be here in a few days, but again the kit never arrived. So to make a long story short the kit finally arrives almost two weeks late.

I have only been using COX HSI since July 06, and so far I'm very satisfied with the service, the connection has been rock solid and with the upgrades we have been getting lately it's all that much better.

We had just migrated over from DSL, and with the distance from the CO., our fragile copper lines that could barley hold a 1.5/384 sync, I could not be any happier with Cox cable.

As for the service, we are on the preferred package 9/768 and are getting slightly above our advertised speeds.

We have had our service for 2 years now and couldn't be happier with the overall service. The speeds have been rock solid and the connection has been very reliable.

*****************************UPDATE Feb. 25 2010***************************

The connection is still rock solid and were getting slightly above our advertised speeds on the preferred tier which was just upgraded from 10/768 to 12/1.5

***************************UPDATE Feb. 20 2013**************************************

Our connection still has been rock solid and our speed on preferred has been increased to 18/2 and we are getting slightly above the speed on the speed tests.

*************************Update October 30 2013***********************************

Our connection has been rock solid with one exception of packet loss in our neighborhood since my last update. The Cox people were on the problem and it was solved in a few days. We also just receive a upgrade in speed from 18/2 to 25/5.

********************************Update January 2015********************************

In October 2014 we got an upgrade in speed to 50/5 on our preferred package.

my reponse to the Cox HSI in Cleveland, OH

I agree, I live like 3mins from the CO and I have the PREMIRE WWW so I get 12 / 1 and I usually get almost 15 down and about 1.5 or so up, depending on the time of the day. It's great if you're doing a lot of downloading / uploading. I'm not a big gamer, but I would have to say that the latency would be extremely low.

tl;dr - Poor install experience, excellent service once install kinks worked out, couple billing issues over years.

Initially had many connectivity, packet loss, speed issues when first setup with service. I had a customer-owned SB6182 8x4 modem purchased at the Cox solutions store.

I had many tech visits over the course of weeks - maybe 5-6 truck rolls, with multiple techs and supervisors. Luckily I work from home so all these visits weren't a horrible inconvenience, but it was hard to work from home with sketchy service. If I complained about service they came out, which was was a good customer service experience. I had wires replaced from pole to house, wires replaced inside house, modem swaps, etc - still had connection drops, bad latency, not getting advertised speed.

I only had cable internet service; I did not sign up for TV. On the final visit, the tech replaced the "new style" filter on the pole to prevent me from getting free cable with an "old style" filter and that fixed everything! Its been three years since that date and I've had ultra reliable service, and never once have I performed a speed test and received less than my advertised speeds. I'm on ultimate tier - when I started service it was 150/20Mbps but is now 300/30Mbps - same price! Nice to get a substantial speed bump without having any change in monthly fee. I had to replace my 8x4 SB6182 with 24x8 Netgear CM600 to take advantage of the new speeds. My area is only using 16x4 channels.

I did have two billing issues with Cox. During the highly publicized Home Depot hack in 2014, my credit card number was changed as a result of the hacking. I had my Cox bill setup to get automatically paid via Credit Card. The timing of the issue meant my card was cancelled/replaced when my Cox bill hit and the charge didn't go though. Cox tried to charge me a $25 "returned payment" fee but this doesn't make any sense with a credit card. This isn't an ACH transfer like with a checking account - the charge never went through initially and was reversed by the bank, as would happen with a checking account. The credit card transaction was immediately declined - there was no return. Additionally, I was still on time with my payment! I made a payment with new card prior to due date. I called a few times - Cox showed no mercy about millions of people's credit cards being replaced during the great Home Depot hack of 2014. I finally got a hold of a supervisor who grudgingly removed the charge.

Second billing issue. When Cox increased Ultimate tier speeds, they sent me letter saying I'd need to replace my 8x4 SB6182 to use the new speeds. So I bought a new modem and called them to replace it. Cox then charged me a $75 "modem upgrade" fee !! It turned out this was a mistake, they were actually charging me $75 for not returning my old modem, but I owned it! When I called the representative acted as if it was inconceivable I could go into a Cox store and buy the modem outright (despite having receipt). The issue was, the receipt was for different MAC/serial # due to modem swaps described above during trying to troubleshoot issues during installation. The rep acted as if there was no paper trail to corroborate my story of buying my own modem and having it swapped with one from truck, so she had to 'take my word for it' and remove the $75 charge. I never had a modem rental fee on any of my bills since I started service - I would have thought that is proof enough I had my own modem.

Also had an issue where they sent me a 'Compromised Computer Notification' saying one of my computers was infected with Alureon / TDSS Virus. This is a windows virus and I don't have any Microsoft Windows devices in the house. When I called Cox' Security team they could give me no useful information about this notice - no time/date stamp of when the issue was observed, no info about the hostname/IP of botnet command/control server that my service allegedly connected to, etc.. No actionable information whatsoever for me to do anything, so I reluctantly ignored the notice.

I ordered the Ultimate tier which was advertised at $79.00 for 12 months. After that, it would go up to the regular price of $99. The install went without any issues. I was up and running within 15-20 minutes. I purchased the SB6183 modem from Best Buy since I heard the Ultimate tier would be bumped up from 150 down to 300 down. So far, I haven't had issues that prevented me from using the internet. I can say the internet service is way better than it was back in 2009.

Came home the other night, had some pressing business to take care of online, found my connection was down, cycled the modem several times, modem would not acquire. So I went to dinner. This happens somewhat often and usually comes back in a short while. While waiting for dinner, turned tv on.. 100% snow! About 2 hrs later, went back to see if outage had passed, no luck... So I bit the bullet and called support.. Was forced to go thru the mindless automated troubleshooting, and after it was unable to ping my modem, was handed off to a script-reader. I asked them when the outage in my area was estimated to be corrected.. He told me he showed no outage, and wanted me to go thru the "disconnect modem from router, connect direct to computer"... I reminded him of the tv AND HSI outage... The drone kept insisting there was no outage... Having had this same exact scenario happen about every 3-4 months, I decided to call it a night, and sure enough, the next morning, all was working again... A coworker at my dayjob worked as a Cox support tech for a while, and told me the tier 1 support people have two screens that show outages, one right in front of them, showing global outages, and another, where they have to get up and go look at, that shows localized outages... Apparently this is a case of either lack of knowledge or lazyness. Cox HSI is pretty good, as long as you don't need to call support, and from reading some of the horror stories about some other Cable HSI providers service/support, I thank my lucky stars I have Cox in my location...

UPDATE on 7/29/11: For the last few months, I've had a somewhat random disconnection problem. Every few weeks, I will go thru a several day period where my connectivity just stops randomly. A release of IP via my routers webpage, pull power to the modem, wait a sec, power back on, wait for modem to acquire, renew IP, release/pwr cycle/renew again, and voila! connectivity is back.. for awhile.. when the disconnects are happening, sometimes I get no more than 10-15 min between disconnects. These waves of disconnects come in about a 2-3 week interval. When they are not happening, the connection is flawless. This has been going on for well over a year, If not for the fact that Cox has the highest speed connection in the Las Vegas valley, I'd have dumped them quite a while ago. I've had the modem signals scoped by one of the DSLReports Cox employees who said the levels were fine. A later tech said they were too high and had me put an attenuator inline.. No change. I've escalated this to the local tech manager, and their latest claim is that my modem is not "approved" by Cox... When I asked them why then is it still listed on their approved list webpage, I got a lot of silence.. The modem is a Linksys BEFCM10 v3, and have tried a second unit of the same model, does the same thing.. I'm highly averse to changing to another brand (or even a newer model Linksys) as this modem is the old flat-blue case style and allows me to stack my Linksys router and modem into a slot where any other modem would not fit. I'm in the process of writing a letter to Cox Corporate and see if I can get any assistance from the higher-ups.. Another interesting note: when the modem loses connectivity, all of the status lights on the front of the unit stay the same, AND very tellingly, I am able to release/renew DHCP (via the router webpage) during this time, which I would be unable to do if the modem was defective. I have it on good authority (a friend in Utah, who works for Comcast as a senior HSI/Cable plant engineer with 15+yr exp) that the disconnects I describe sounds VERY much like an oversold node.. So keep this in mind when considering Cox...

UPDATE on 12/7/11: Got tired of the seemingly random disconnects seen above, so went out and bought a Motorola SB5120 modem about 3 months ago. I needed a reliable network connection as I was planning on dropping my expensive wireline phone and going with Vonage VOIP. Modem was swapped, and for about a month the connection was absolutely rock-solid. I have a remotely colocated Linux server that I run several websites on, and which also runs a monitoring service that pings my cablemodem/network periodically and IMs me when the system is un-reachable. After this month of flawless operation, I began seeing both on the monitoring app and when I would be working at the computer, since the modem sits directly above my main computer, disconnects on the cablemodem where the online, send and recieve lights would go out for about 5 seconds, the recieve light would then flash for about 5 seconds, and go solid, then the send light would do the same, and finally the online light, at which time I'd be back online. These occurrances happen on a random basis, where days-weeks may go by between occurrances, then I may get 2-3 of them in a short several hour period. Fortuantly, Vonage seems to take these "burps" in stride. The Linksys modems required a power cycle to get back online. Since I've now seen these interruptions on 3 different cablemodems. 2 of one brand/model and 1 of another brand/model, ALL of which are on Cox's "approved" list, despite what I was told by several Cox employees regarding the Linksys BEFCM10.

Update: 12/11/16-Noticed the rate I was paying back around 2010, that being $41/mo, when I first did this review is now, after TWO price increases in ONE year. We cancelled Cox TV back about Nov 2015, and went with DirecTv, but kept the Cox preferred internet connection, which was at $67/mo, which surprised the heck out of me that it didn't increase with our unbundling of service. About 3 or 4 months later, it went to $74/mo, and then about 6 months later, it went to $77/mo. Since I really don't need the preferred 50/10 speeds I've considered dropping to the next lower tier to save ~$16/mo (till the next rate increase)... Otherwise the connection works perfectly and I'm a happy camper (my wallet, not so much)...

Have been with Cox since 2000 and have had mostly positive experiences. Speed is good for my area 200/20 ultimate, better than the 2nd place AT&T u-verse crap at 40/5 at the same price. Still waiting for word on whether Gigablast is coming to my area. Reliability has been about 99.8% so that is a big plus. I would recommend Cox just on the fact that it is a private company that doesn't give in to the peer pressure of giving out it's users data based on some BS request. UPDATE## Left Cox for AT&T Internet 1000 as it provides faster service for cheaper price. $90 per mo 4ever.

Ive been a Cox client for 10+ years doing only the highest tier of internet service. I started out with a single channel modem and like 5Mbs. Ive gone thru the entire High Speed course with them.

The network has been just steller. Im very technical and I have used Multiping to monitor it for the last 6 years. Its latency and uptime are just amazing. Only storms and upgrades have VERY briefly caused downtime. In Phoenix they have been on the leading edge of technology for most of this time. Speed tests always record the exact speeds of my tier. 24/7.

The customer service is better then most cable companies. I have to deal with Time Warner and Comcast for clients and Cox is by far better. You can usally get to a tech that actually understands technical stuff. Ive had issues along the way as with any cable company and they have been incredibly responsive and fixed them. Cox maintains VERY skilled guys here on the Cox HSI forum that are really stunning technically and REALLY know what they are doing. There was issue with my "node" in my area getting overloaded once and the Cox rep here got the local Cox plant to reconfigure my whole section of the city to fix my issue. Just wow.

With 10 years of service i can tell you without doubt that Cox is awesome. The guys here on DSL reports are awesome. ANYONE who says different is crazy. Cox will address ANY issue and fix it VERY promptly. They provide a stunning network thats as good as possible.

I highly recommend them.

I have the "Preferred" service for $44.95/mo. Moved into a new home a little over a year ago. Got the bundled cable/Internet/phone services. I had no problem with the order and install process. I provided my own modem (Motorola SB5120). I had an initial problem for several months where the Internet would drop out on me and the only way to get it back was to power cycle the modem. I found out that the version of firmware in my modem was sensitive to noise and that a newer firmware corrected that. I called Cox Support and requested an update. The support agent said that Cox does not do that. Well several hours later, a firmware update came down from Cox to my modem. Except for that experience, I have had pretty good experiences with support. I have had some dropped speed issues a few times. That seems to be more common up in the Phoenix area. I suspect Cox was doing some work in the area.

Update: 01/23/2010

I have had very few issues with Cox now. I was upgraded to the "Premier" package (however it cost me an extra $10). Premier now costs me $59.95. Several months ago, Cox apparently upgraded our area. I noticed an increase in my SNR. I used to have signal numbers around 34-35. I now get numbers consistently around 37-38 with Download Power levels in the low single digits and Upstream Power levels in the low 40's. Those are the best signal numbers I have ever had. I receive download speed numbers many times in the low 30mbs at Speedtest.net. The one issue I (and a number of others) did run into was trouble with Cox's DNS servers. I would frequently get "page not found" errors even when I was within the same domain. I switched to OpenDNS and have had no problems since then.

Update: 12/15/2010

Several months ago I started having problems with my 4yr old SB5120 modem. I was about to replace it with another of the same model when I received a letter from Cox indicating they were about to upgrade the area to DOCSIS 3. I decided to purchased a SB6120 modem instead of a SB5120. After installing the new modem, I got an immediate improvement in speed. After a couple of firmware upgrades that Cox sent down and a router firmware upgrade I made to my D-Link router, my signals and speed are outstanding. Consistently getting 100mbps or over down and over 6mbps up on the Cox Arizona speedtest site. I am a happy camper. The "Premier" package is now $64.99.

Update: 7/10/2011

I still have Cox's Premier Internet service for $65. Several months back they gave us a "speed increase" from 20 to 22 mbps. However, they apparently cut back on the Powerboost which now lasts for just a few seconds. I was getting insane speed test results (130mbps +) prior to this upgrade but afterwards now get around the specified speed rate for the Premier service. Still very reliable.

Update: 7/25/2012

No real changes to my review. Same service (Premier), same hardware (SB6120). Have had no serious issues. Getting speed tests of 30+ Download and 6+ uploads.

Update: 2/26/2013

No problems to speak of. Our area was upgraded this month. With premier service I now have speeds of around 5o mbps up and about 13 mbps down. Can't complain.

Update: 2/16/2014

No changes since last review. Still have the SB6120. I have encountered no issues.

Update: 7/25/2016

I am still satisfied with Cox. I did run into a few things in the past few months.

The Good: I noticed one evening that my download speed had dropped to about 30 mbps when it had previously been at about 117 mbps. I called Cox and after the support person also noticed there was an issue with my connection, he contacted second level support. They had already noticed that there was an issue before I had called. Within about 10 minutes, they had resolved my problem and I was back to normal.

The SoSo: After a power outage, my caller ID was not showing on my TV when a call came through. I called Cox several times and they tried a few things but nothing worked. A tech person was scheduled to come to my house to check things out a few days later. He never came here but resolved it somewhere on their end. The power outage might have messed up some of their equipment.

The Bad: I normally get the MLB package to watch baseball games. I had received a post card from Cox indicating that I would be automatically signed up again this year. Before the free preview ended, I attempted to take advantage of the MLB At Bat option of watching games on my PC. I was unable to get that working after several days of calls to support to try to resolve it. One support person said that I needed to purchase an extra sports package to enable this, but that was never the case before. I refused. When the free preview period ended, I found that I was even unable to see MLB Extra Innings games on my TV. When I called again, they eventually found out that my MLB package had never been set up although the post card said it would be done automatically. Once that was set up, I was able to watch games on my TV as well as on my computer. This whole process went on for at least a good week. Somewhere along the line the ball was dropped. As I recall I had a similar issue the previous year.

Usually I find support pretty good. Hopefully that will continue.

DNS Issues

Use OpenDNS's free servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. I've been a Cox customer for somewhere around 17 years. The service has always improved year of year. just about the only thing that has given me issues over the past 7 or 8 years is an actual service outage, which happens very rarely, or DNS issues. I switched to OpenDNS roughly 4 years ago and can now say the only issues I've had in the last 4 years were outages and an overloaded node.
