The install was easy and the rep was helpful. It's stupid to have to pay 30 bucks for an install that I do myself but oh well. Ping times are what I would expect from Tucson to other places, routes look like there are drawn right. Speeds are good and have not had a downtime yet. I use NAT and wireless and both were easy to setup and operate smoothly. member for 22.5 years, 471 visits, last login: 14 years ago lodged 21.1 years ago
Line had had previous service so I just picked up a CM from Compusa, called their guys up and got online. I use a Unix box for NAT. Dynamic IP sucks coming from static. Service is what I would expect from a cable provider, not fantastic but there. member for 23 years, 2913 visits, last login: 12.9 years ago lodged 21.1 years ago
I have had Cox High Speed access for 4 months and every month it goes down. Before that I had VerizonOnline DSL service and it was fantastic. I switched to Cox because the sale person sold me on a wonderful bundle deal. Right now as I write this review my cable has been down for 3 days and comes on when it wants to. I have a maintenance guy from Cox that is suppose to be coming out to fix the Node outside. But when you have had 15 outages in a 4 month period isnt that a problem. The point of this review is DSL is the best service because if you can see how many times your phones goes out to how many times your cable goes out! DSL is more reliable and it looks like I am going back to them for service. It is faster also if you get the right package and even though it might be more expensive, I dont mind paying for the reliablility. member for 21.1 years, 5 visits, last login: 21.1 years ago lodged 21.1 years ago
In my town we have the luxury of two digital cable providers, a "Mom & Pop" company called Full Service TV Plus (that's a mouthful..heh) and Cox. Cox had just recently moved into my town, a salesperson actually came to my door to present offers from Cox. A little background first.. FCTV Plus was the only game in town for years... DSL is not available in my area. COX had attempted to buy them out, when the offer was turned down, COX went to court to have access to our area. Now FCTV Plus was an ok cable TV provider (altho some folks hated the service, our town had the highest rate of Satellite TV subscribers in the state) but when they tried to do High Speed Internet service, FCTV Plus dropped the ball completely. FCTV Plus had "outsourced" the Internet service and hired a 24 hour tech support service. "High" speed was a joke, at best was only a steady 350kbs download. Also, service kept disconecting, calling the tech service they hired (24hoursupport.com) was not fun, as they had cookie-cutter responses. Always "turn off your computer, unplug your modem, disconnect the cable". I had an Earthlink dialup account as backup for internet access. Was very aggrivating (and costly) to say the least. Back to COX. Customer service came...I ordered the service, was a 2 week waiting list since they had just started taking orders. Installed as scheduled, the COX Installer was very knowledgable and helpful...had no qualms about where I wanted the cable wire to go, unlike the FCTV Plus installer (that in itself is another story). COX also had an offer for a free modem and free installation, was VERY happy to see that the free modem is a Motorola SB2400 SURFboard cable modem. I also ordered Digital TV and phone service from COX, happy with those services also. Since having COX HSI for almost 2 months, service has not been down once. Speed is always constant as advertised (for download average 3000kbs). The one time I called COX HSI tech support (I wanted to ask them questions about pinging thier gateway) I found them knowledgable and courteous, offering tips on how to improve my gaming experience online (ie: reducing ping times on the game I play). Yes, I'm a gamer, and I take my internet connection speed VERY seriously. I've read good and bad reviews on COX HSI, service seems to depend on the area you live in. I'm glad to be in an area where COX is doing things right. Very happy with service. member for 21.3 years, 1052 visits, last login: 2 years ago lodged 21.1 years ago

I'll do away with the negative first so I can rave through my review. Although nothing is 100% fail-proof, I can honestly say that the only thing I can complain about is sometimes and this is mostly in the early hours of 3:00 to 7:00a.m., there might be some downtime experienced. I am almost always on line and at the computer and I mean to say that this happens no more than once or twice a month. Now add those hours up and let's even throw a few more on top of those and you still don't account for even one half a days time. Keep in mind also that this is mostly experienced during the time most people are sleeping. Additionally, I've had no rebuttle from Cox when I call and request compensatory time applied to my account for this downtime either. Never! I have a LAN (local area network) and whenever I had questions or troubles such as with my router/port configurations or the like, tech support has helped me even when issues discussed went beyond the limitations of tech support as itemized in my contract agreement. These discussions were continued only with the understanding that it was a personal assistance made by the representative at Cox. Each time they would strictly specify that Cox Communications could not offer information about routing or port configurations but the person with whom I was speaking would always came through for me. Now the speed of cable connection in Wichita is at the highest and I know it matches if not surpasses DSL. This is no doubt the most important thing any web-head is concerned with. So as a web-head I say happily that I am satisfied with the functionality of cable connection. I also wonder about those people out there that are hesitant for one reason or another. I wonder; if you were able to use cable connection for a week to get a good taste of what you have been missing. Would going back to DSL, satellite or God forbid, dial-up ever be mentally palatable again? Thank you for reading my review. member for 21.1 years, 121 visits, last login: 27 days ago lodged 21.1 years ago
Ok, I had a 1500d/128u PPPoE DSL connection from SWB. I acidentally ordered the 5 static IP package for $65. I cancel the order and yesterday morning, I found that I couldn't connect anymore with my router. Called SWB and they kept me on hold. So I called Cox and ask them how much a self install kit costs. The rep told me it costs $30. So I went out to Cox, stand in line for 20 minutes because there was lots of people, and got a self install kit. Asked the woman how much the self install kit costs, and she told me it was free. You see, Cox is running a special, free self install kit or $15 for professional self installation on Cox HSI. Free cable modem for a year. Who could pass this up? Well, I got the self install kit home, hook it up, all four lights came on but I couldn't go anywhere. Called Cox and told them I want to activate my account and modem. They told me the activation server crashed, and they was working on it. Called today, and the rep told me the activation server was going to be back up by afternoon, and he will call me back. He never did. Around 7:30pm when American Idol was on, the service came up, but it's slow. Here's a speed test to prove that I ain't lying to y'all: 2003-02-26 00:12:18 EST: 96 / 216 Your download speed : 96720 bps, or 96 kbps. A 11.8 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 216294 bps, or 216 kbps. I called Cox and explained to the rep, and they're going to send a tech out tomorrow between 10am to noon to see if the tech could fix it. I know it's not on my end, it has to be on theirs or something. The speed I order is suppose to be at 3000/300 at $40(cable modem's rental is free for a year). Order was fine and installation was fine since I did it myself. The home equipment is a IBM Personal Computer 350 Pentium MMx GeniuneIntel 167 mhz, 48 ram, Windows 98SE, etc. I know the computer's old, but it can't be the computer. I'm already tweaked to the max. The IP is dynamic and there's no PPPoE. I just click on my browser and I'm running! The good experience is I'll be saving $10 less than getting DSL service from SWB, no PPPoE software. The bad experience is it's slow. I will update as time goes on and I hope the tech will fix this connection tomorrow. If not, I will be on Cox's @$$ until it's fixed. If it's not fixed, I will go to the city and complain. I will complain to the mayor and CC(City Council) until Cox fix this. If it's still not fixed, I will complain to the mayor and CC, FCC, FTC, and the BBB until this get fixed. -Helen member for 21.1 years, 1 visits, last login: 21.1 years ago lodged 21.1 years ago
Well...took the plunge and called up Cox HSI. Canceling AOL DSL was indeed a pleasure even though it was a trouble free service and I had good speeds. Only once did I ever loose service with the DSL. Cox's self-connect was a breeze...I purchased a DLink DCM200 for $79.00 at PCClub and away I went. Several calls to COX tech support about my email accounts ended up me walking away feeling like they knew what they were talking about and were very happy to see me happy. Thanks COX San Diego ! Speed tests show me right at 3000 down and 256 up with 40-60ms pings. Zero latency too. I was a little concerned wether or not I could share the connection without paying for a another IP or buying a router so I changed my shared connection (the DSL) to the cable and started PPPshar and Ka-Ching...I had the network back up. So far so good with COX... hope it stays good. Lord knows they get enough $$ from me with 2 digital cable connections, phone and now cable broadband. member for 23.3 years, 1368 visits, last login: 9.7 years ago lodged 21.1 years ago
Have used Cox HSI for a while now, since they were under the umbrella of @home. Had a static ip and a full 1.5mbps upload/download back then, but it'd be hard to expect that now. The connection was good back then, and except for a rocky month or so during the switch over to their own infrastructure, it's remained good. Recently moved and had to set up an install for my line in the new place. Called on a Wednessday and they had the guy out on Monday to set it up. Showed up exactly on time, was in and out within 15 minutes, and was very pleasant the entire time he was there. Could not have asked for an easier process. The sales rep I talked to about switching the service did seem a little less than completely knowledgable, and he did try to push their additional services (digital cable tv and digital telephone service), but it never came near excessive, and the entire phone conversation to get my service moved took perhaps 30 minutes, including hold time. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the service. Easy, low hassle set up, fairly good price, good speed, good reliability. member for 21.1 years, 274 visits, last login: 17.9 years ago lodged 21.1 years ago
