UPDATE: Earthlink is no longer distributing cable Broadband. We're with straight-up Xfinity now. My husband and I had had Earthlink dialup accounts for some years, and we were satisfied with them so we didn't have to think too long and hard before going with Earthlink cable the first time we got broadband. (Besides, we couldn't get DSL at our Brooklyn apartment, and our only other cable option would be RoadRunner.) The cable service started out as painless as we could have hoped it would be. It was only a couple of weeks after we placed the order that the Time-Warner guy came to install the cable (we didn't have cable TV) and bring the modem. There were no sync problems, the service worked right from the start. We had gotten an Asante router so that we could share the service between our two Macs, and that was also pretty much plug-and-play. The service started out reliable when we got it in autumn 2002, with good speeds. However, eventually we found ourselves plagued by signal problems both on the broadband and on the TV. We called for service repeatedly, had numerous service visits, and the techs either tested our line, told us the signal was fine and left, or they tested our line and told us the signal was weak and needed to be fixed "at the plant". A couple of modem swaps seemed to solve the issues temporarily, but they always came back. I was reluctant to implicate Earthlink, as I'd been a satisfied user of their services for years. I suspected that TWC of NYC was the weak link in all of this. There seemed to be a great deal of resistance to do what needed to be done with lines and equipment to get our services running at an optimal level. Eventually, after far too many missed days of work waiting around for cable techs, in July 2006 we finally got TWC of NYC to re-run our line - which got us acceptable service for the next nine months until we left New York. When we moved to the Boston area in March 2007 we chose Earthlink/Comcast as our cable broadband provider, having decided not to get a landline with Verizon. The installer got us set up the day after we moved into our apartment, and six months later, so far so good! member for 21.6 years, 7024 visits, last login: a few hours ago updated 3.4 years ago

CSRs don't speak English. TW network but crummy EL backbone and DNS (I have an all in one and despite my local config they force their DNS to the DHCP clients. 15 mbit never get more than 10. member for 14.9 years, 3916 visits, last login: 1 day ago lodged 7.4 years ago
Except for mysterious dropouts for no apparent reason the service is great. Charter Spectrum customer service sent a guy out who says I need a new underground drop, 80 feet through a neighbor's new landscaping. The cable is 3 years old. He also noted the vault is full of dirt. Like I'm his first customer with underground utilities. He noted my other neighbor's cable was covered in dirt as well. Customer service and I agreed to have them log my connection for a day and to not do any digging until at least today. Last evening 2 guys with Spectrum Contractor signs on a pickup truck drive up, park and pull out a signal tester and a shovel. I asked if they knew what was under the ground around here, they said no, I said "Don't use the shovel." Charter called and sort of apologized. Connection went down again a few minutes after midnight, for about 30 seconds. Charter can read logs in the DOCSIS 3 modem. Harris will help them. Digging up lawns probably not best vector to solve issue. Stay tuned. member for 15.8 years, 1510 visits, last login: 2.2 years ago updated 7.4 years ago
9/5/16: So far, so good. I haven't had chance to use the internet service since the switch to EarthLink, so I haven't been able to verify the speeds yet, however my parents and brothers have been able to stream YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu without problems. member for 11.5 years, 2021 visits, last login: 7 days ago updated 7.6 years ago

Tried to switch from Bright House to Earthlink. Price is better and the connection is the same as before. Earthlink is just a reseller of Bright House, but Earthlink has a lower price. Price was supposed to be $29.95 for the first six months, then $49.95. But they set it at $49.95 from the beginning. Tried calling and resolving, but after two days I gave up and switched back to Bright House. Earthlink Support is pure crap. They are not able to resolve anything and constantly transferring calls to people that can not or do not want to help. Very poor support, useless. member for 10.9 years, 592 visits, last login: 169 days ago updated 8.2 years ago
Update 9/9/2015 This is likely to be my last review of Earthlink High Speed Internet over Time Warner Cable. I've made the decsion to end my relationship with EL and switch back to TWC in the next month. It simply has come down to the price of the service and what they're offering. With Earthlink MAX they top out at 15Mbps and 1 Mbps Up. I'm paying a total of just under $61 dollars a month. I can get 30 Mbps for less, even with modem rental. I've very rarely ever had to call for service and the Time Warner techs who typically work in my small town to a great job to addressing concerns and getting it fixed. With that said I'm not dinging them for reliablity, but I've dropped their score for Value for money. It's just not there anymore. If you've got Time Warner in your area and it simply works. Keep it, Earthlink won't save you any money. Update 7/22/2011 Once again Earthlink can't get it's act together. They seem to believe I should be paying for an email account, after I've told them, TWC has confirmed with them that I have a Earthlink Account via TWC, billed by TWC. This situtation was supposed to have been resolved by someone with Earthlink Corporate, I supplied by TWC account number which was requested. Today I got a call saying that I owed a little over 6 bucks, obviously I was furious, and requested a supervisor. Ultimately he decided to Txfer me to Customer Services. I have e-mail the corporate contact as I refused to get passed around. ================== For some reason Earthlink decided to deactivate my email account. I have tried 3 different numbers and all come up busy, I tried the chat feature, ends up being a big waste of time! If it weren't for the price I would switch to TimeWarner, at least then I know I would get some sense of service. Rated down the Services category. ========================= Ordered on 3/27.2011 via sales chat. Install Setup 3/28/2011 via Time Warner Cable Installed 3/29/2011 Tech was very good and knew his stuff. Appt window was 4 to 7. He called @ 5 he arrived about 20 minutes after 5. Subscribed to 15Mbps/768K Getting close to advertised speeds. I previously had Service a few years ago at my previous residence. As soon as I moved I wanted to get cable at my new place instead of DSL. So I called earthlink on the phone and they said I can't get it casue I am under the 1 yr term contract. So I discussed this on the forums and called them back and this time they told me that you can only get cable if DSL is not available at your new place. After this I found ELNKrobert who helps out on the forums. He got me cable as fast as possible. The installer came on time and it took him about 15 minutes to run wires inside the room and set up the modem. Overall I would say Earthlink cable (through time warner) is great. You should definately get it if you can. They recently upgraded everyones speeds to 3mbit down which is great. Update: 8/14/04 Hmm I haven't seen any downtime except when Time Warner cut off my cable cause the guy downstairs cancelled his cable service. Time Warner came back the same day and put my service back up. Speeds have been the same. Though I'd like to see an increase in the speeds for the price we are paying. Update: 11/30/05 For the past 4 months or so the service has been horrible. I was down for a month due to some problems with the wiring. Even after fixing that its been very slow. I might be switching to DSL if I can find the time to look around. Update: 08/06/14 Cancelled time warner/earthlink a few months after my last update. Been with FiOS since then even though it has its problems, much better than my previous providers. member for 21.2 years, 72 visits, last login: 5.8 years ago updated 9.7 years ago
Order and install took only three days. Much better than road runner. speed is at a consistent 2100kbps down and 410 up. Update 5 February 2008: Sorry I dumped them a long while ago back in 2004 because they have become mediocre at best. The big boss have push them out and now they are falling apart. Abandon SHip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 20 July 2010: I have ditched them like back in 2008. they are dieing a painful death since the FCC is so weak. member for 20.9 years, 1649 visits, last login: 2.2 years ago updated 9.7 years ago |
