After considering all the reviews on this site, I gave the Earthlink Cable 2000/384kpbs $42/month offer a shot. The Time Warner installation people had to go through a lot of effort to get everything hooked up, but they did it well, they were extremely friendly, and best of all it was free. I've only had the service for a week, but it's been nothing but pleasurable. It's a great price, and the ability to dial-up for free when away from home is an awesome feature. And best of all, much to my amazement, the downstream speed is exactly as fast as advertised. (I don't know how to check upstream speed.) Thank you Earthlink. member for 21.2 years, 1 visits, last login: 19.2 years ago lodged 21.2 years ago
I ordered my cable internet through Earthlink with one of their new special promotions. I was excited to finally have broadband availability in Baytown. When I signed up on Dec 3, I was told that I would be contacted within 72 hours to set up an installation time. After several days passed,I began trying to find out why I had not been contacted. Earthlink told me to call Time-Warner cable, Time-Warner told me they hadn't received an order from Earthlink. I finally reached an Earthlink customer support person that called Time-Warner directly and got things worked out. That was one good point. My installation was scheduled for Dec 18 in a four hour block 8 - 12. I rearranged my work schedule so that I could go in late that morning. I am very busy at work right now, so that was my one shot for getting this done within their crazy installation times. I mean, if it wasn't in a four or five hour block it would be easy to do during work hours, but how many people can sit home from work half a day? If they offered late evening it would be OK too, but they don't. I got the confirmation automated message the night before and it said the block was 8 to 1, not 12. It figures. Of course I got bored while I was sitting at home for hours waiting on them to show up, so I signed online to do the last of my 56K gaming. at 1:00, still no one has showed up. I signed off and checked my voice mail. It turns out that some dumbass named 'Eddie' who was the installer had called. He didn't seem to know what he was installing, calling it AOL at first. He had no clue what voice-mail was and that the reason he got it was because I was on the phone and at HOME. So, I called him back at 1:10 and he said that I had missed my window so I would have to reschedule. I told him that no one had said I would be called before they came over, I just expected them to show up. (Isn't that what a freakin' appointment is, after all???) I finally got pissed at him and hung up. Then I promptly emailed Earthlink and told them to cancel my order and my account. DI that happen at least? Of course not. They said that I would have to talk to Time Warner. This is really ridiculous. I ordered from EARTHLINK! So I guess I will just wait for a better broadband solution... or find one when I move in 6 months anyway. I really, really, really hate cable companies. I always get poor customer service from them. That's why I use DirecTV! Darren member for 21.2 years, driveby review (so far) lodged 21.2 years ago
Called in order by phone; got $19.95/mo incentive deal; long-term deal of $41.95/mo. Scheduled install with Time-Warner; installer showed up within agreed time-window. Installation neat and just as I wanted it. Total time: 90 minutes including pulling cable. Connection worked instantly direct to my laptop. It also worked instantly when I moved it to my previously installed Linksys BEFSR41 router for my home LAN. Speed was all I could ask for. From order to install, elapsed time was 48 hrs. This is in West Houston, TX and the experience was VERY GOOD. Recommend highly! member for 21.3 years, 61 visits, last login: 19.7 years ago lodged 21.3 years ago
1st month is free then the next 3 are just for $19.95! Then the low $41.95. It all happened in 1 day, Spoke with the Earthlink rep, setup a pw and username, then received a call from Time Warner the very next day and I was able to pick up my package. Self-installation was very simple and easy. 8 e-mail addy's with 10mb's of webspace each. 3mbs down/384 up for $41 Earthlink/RR Vs 768/128 for $49.95 Verizon, you do the math. *** '02 *** Verizon DSL is much cheaper now. member for 21.3 years, 124 visits, last login: 8.3 years ago lodged 21.3 years ago
a few weeks ago, i got a call from earthlink, alerting me that earthlink was now available over the AT&T broadband lines (ie, if you're in the att broadband available network in the boston area). the cost is $7 a month less (it's $41/mo). i switched over and had some problems getting my linux box connected to the net. most (ie AT&T) tech support doesn't offer any support for linux and will most often tell you that they can't help you at all. that's understandable, i suppose, but two earthlink techs today went above & beyond what's expected to help me troubleshoot the connection, despite the fact that i told them that the windows client in my network _could_ connect. they spent over 1/2 hour with me each, not only offering great advice but following through twice (as late as 9:30 tonight) with what they could find on google, what other people have suggested, etc. i was amazed how helpful they were and am grateful for getting a discount for better customer service. besides the customer service, all of the benefits of at&t's strong network in my area still remain true. my speeds are fast and no ports are blocked. i'm very happy with my service. by the way, all along it was an issue with a faulty rule in my firewall. go figure. member for 22.6 years, 1813 visits, last login: 12.3 years ago lodged 21.3 years ago

Ordered 11/4/02, went live 11/8/02. I called, they came, I surfed. Advertised as 2000kbit/364kbit, I'm right in there. Outage on the second day, (~15 hrs) but we got hit with tornadoes, and considering the deaths and destruction, I wasn't going to complain too much. My TW bill came the day I went live - they charged me for some HBO thingies. I called billing, said I ordered EL, not HBO and the rep said oops, nevermind. We hang up, no cable light on the modem. Hmm. I called TW back, connected to support, explained what just happened, he said oops, here 'ya go, and I was back up. Kinda funny, really. At least they were nice about it. We'll see about the billing issue. Dynamic IP, Tosh PCX2200 cable modem to an SMC7008ABR router, to a few pcs. Once the installation tech padded down the signal, everything worked. The guy was cool, didn't give me any 'we can't support the router' talk. I've been an Earthlink dialup customer for almost three years with very little trouble. The switch to EL/TW seemed like a natural, and I keep my dialup in case the cable goes down. I didn't use any of the EL or TW software. Downloaded DrTCP (elsewhere on dslreports.com , tweaked and tested. Last thing - the installation tech left me the USB etherlink adapter. I installed it on my USB hub. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, but the guy left me another toy - he gets a gold star. Mark. member for 21.3 years, 294 visits, last login: 18.5 years ago lodged 21.3 years ago
This ISP rocks. I get less than 50 ping from every game server in US. It took only 4 days compared to Verizon which took 3 weeks. Techs are so friendly and really knows about internet and computer.Only bad thing are slow newsserver and what I said obove. But I rarely use newsgroup and I use outlook express. You get constant 2000kb down and 360kb up. I feel so good when it says 'Insane' after doing speedtest. So if you can get it call Earthlink right now(I feel like earthlink salesman hehe If you're thinking about roadrunner or earthlink i bet earthlink is better. Two thumbs up!!! member for 21.4 years, 704 visits, last login: 16.3 years ago lodged 21.4 years ago
I researched many sources before determining that TW was the way to go for me in my area (Indianapolis). My brother has had Roadrunner for over a year now and he has been happy with it. With Earthlink you get a few extras over going with straight roadrunner and its a few bucks cheaper a month. I thought about going with dsl because i am only 7000 feet from my co, but for the amount I am paying for E-link I could not get a connection this fast for 42 bucks a month. So far my pings in games have been ok, usually anywhere from 30-50. On speed I'm getting almost 2 mbps down and around 360 kb up which i am very happy with. The only problems I have had so far is the lack of coordination with the install. There was alot of confusion with TW on whether I was in their coverage area. They said they would send someone out to survey my area to see if I was and call me back in a week. Finally as 2 weeks was approaching I decided to call them back and they said that someone did come and I am in the coverage area. I was happy and proceeded to call E-link and sign up. The person I talked to with E-link said that in their computers i was still not in the coverage area and that they would need confirmation from TW before they could sign me up. I called TW back and got a nice lady that said she would take care of it. She called me back and left me a message saying that everything was fine and to call and schedule an install date. TW Install guy comes and installs E-link software. He said I needed to setup a username and password so i did. Later, after getting charged 22 bucks, I found out that E-link had sent me a letter with my username and password in the mail and i had not recieved it yet and that I just signed up for dial up access. I called E-link yesterday and he said that everything was fine and they would credit me back the 22 bucks and switch my username over to the cable account. After all that is cleared up I am very happy with the service so far. member for 21.4 years, 34 visits, last login: 19.2 years ago lodged 21.4 years ago
I didn't want to sign up for TimeWarner's RoadRunner cable modem service because they don't have very good Mac support, they don't offer dial-up service for backup or "roaming" purposes, and I'd heard horrible things about their customer service... so I jumped at the chance to get the same service using Earthlink as my ISP, for $41.95 per month, PLUS you get access to Earthlink's dial-up numbers all over the country for when you travel! They were a little confused about the installation process; I had to call twice to get a TimeWarner guy to come out... but it's been pretty solid ever since. Every now and then the connection drops, but it's always up again in a few minutes. Download speeds are up to 1.7 Mbps, and upload is about 384k as advertised. Oh, one more thing: Earthlink doesn't technically "support" hooking up a network with multiple computers, but they definitely don't care if you do it, and I've had no troubles at all. And my IP address changes so infrequently I could even run a Web server if I wanted to (which I don't). member for 21.4 years, 3 visits, last login: 16.3 years ago lodged 21.4 years ago
