After the install was miss coordinated I took more time off work to sit around and wait for the elusive install guy. After about an hour I was up and synched, but not running! Needless to say I was given a speal of "947 hits on the server, but the server is down. " So that night I called Earthlink's tech support who then passed me on to Time Warner…………. I have to say the Time Warner tech knew exactly what to do. He reconfigured my modem to work with Earthlink's system and I was off and surfing. Since install I have had only one outage and that was resolved yesterday. 2 days down, not too bad…….

After SBC and my ISP couldn't come to terms over DSL service, I was suddenly among the broadband "homeless" and decided to have a look at cable. I found that Earthlink was available via Time Warner cable in my neighborhood.

Speed promised was "about" 2000K down, 384 up. After a very easy install to my Netgear router (and no grief from the installer about being on a network), those speeds were confirmed.

I signed up on line, and did everything else online too, including scheduling the install time (on a Tuesday, after signing up 3 days earlier on Friday). The dial-up access and e-mail were available immediately upon signup. Compared to the troubles I experienced initially with installing DSL, this was a walk in the park.

After a month or two of smooth sailing, the troubles began. The speeds that seemed stable in the beginning became wildly variable. Due to Time Warner's reliance on the "in house' AOL Transit Data Network, latency at peaks times would skyrocket and routing to even nearby sites might involve 20 or more hops. Earthlink and Time Warner, despite numerous complaints and documentation from users (see the DSL Reports forums) would only occasionally admit there was a problem, and would usually blame it all on the fact that someone might be using a router at home.

So I took the time to find another good "partner" ISP with SBC, and moved back to DSL after about three months of cable service. Cable is probably fine if you plan to check your e-mail and maybe watch a movie trailer now and then... but if you are serious about consistent performance, run away!

Well, I've been using Earthlink Dialup for quite a while now. Years, namely. Then, it had came time to realize that I must get a better connection. Begged my parents and all. Yadda Yadda. The usual, guy.

Then it happend. Mom decided to get Cable. Order went in to Earthlink on Aug the 2nd. A Friday. Man on the 3rd Time Warner called up to Schedual appointment, but my parents missed it. Reason to fear? No!!! Amazingly enough, on monday my mom Realized this and called in to schedual appointment with NO PROBLEM!!!!

Heh I expected with all the Tech horror stories I'd get into a hitch but I guess the sales reps aren't that bad.

Well they came, and they installed in a matter of minutes (I happened to be on Dialup right next to them while they where drilling a hole in the wall. Oh my. My ears sasaddasfds...)

Anyway, it was done and then I got on. Speed tests where good. Untweaked tho. Still gotta tweak (having problems using the proggy. XP user here. Any suggestions?). So far 1879/370. Not bad. Pings 10-20 with pops over 40 sometimes to 90. No I don't understand that either.

Checked IP. Still seem to look like I'm a Mindspring user (Hahahahahaha). Dynamic of course. Latency test bad. losses like those I had on the 56k. Hm....

Ehhh I will be updating this. So check back friends! Love me! And stuff

But so far I like this. Especially since I could have had it installed earlier.

Update: Latency is just fine. And I had gotten 2022 on a speed test. (350 up). Heh.

Hopefully this'll last.

UPDATE: Wee fun. I have hit High Latency land with the rest of the people on East cost too! ARUGH.

Earthlink cable modem is good, but Time Warner Cable of New York City is its ISP that provide the worst tech support. It made me stay offline for 240 hours.

I hope other companies follow in earthlink's footsteps to offer broadband to customers thru already-established lines like their cable modem service. I dunno what kind of deal they worked out with Time-Warner, et al., but they've managed to undercut all the other options in my area (dsl, roadrunner) and provide service that has so far been superior to all of them.

The install process went smoothly, and after a little confusion about who to call, the connection went up and has pretty much been up nonstop since then. I switched from a locally-owned dsl isp and didn't really want to move up to a national isp like earthlink but a deal's a deal and it has been good so far.

As you may know, the one flaw in the pearl is newsgroups. While completion is very good and retention is not bad, the nntp servers are capped making downloading big files a real pain. But they seem to be working on adding new servers which offer quicker response. til they get it fixed, a cheapo news service helps round things out. It's still cheaper than dsl!

I decided to order cable to help enhance my Online Gaming expieriance as well as download mp3's faster and the like. So far my Earthlink cable service has been coming along smoothly. (also thanks to the guys in the tweak forum)For the price and features given, I whould have to say that im pretty much satisfied with the my purchase and (unless something major happens) will switch from my AOL dial up connection to the EL cable service. If you were like me and have had aol in the past making the switch to Earthlink will be easy if not easier then getting started with AOL. I mean you dont get all the glitter and every thing handed to you on a silver platter like AOL whould normaly give you but for what is needed by most it does a good job. Some problems with the service whould be the fact you must be involved with your local cable company and if your local cable company is time warner cable you might just run into some very ignorant and impatient tech as well as sales reps. I can remember the first time I called Earth Link, I wanted to know how many people were using the connection (for cable) and how far away CO is (for DSL) first I had to wait 10 mins just to be transfered to some guy who then made me wait longer to get transfered to "get this" some lady in California with Charter Pipeline. Even after numerous phone calls i couldnt get this info, so I just said what the heck "if i dont like it ill cancel" Anyway I finally ordered and recieved a call from TW for a setup date. (they called the next day) about a week later the guy ( it probably took this long because i called in the middle of the week) When the cable guy came to do setup (He looked like he know what he was doing, Even though he didnt have to do much)he did the usual some drilling cable droping and pluged the line up , made sure web pages came up etc. The Funny thing was he told me it was better to not install the EL software because it whould slow down my connection because of the graphics and all, Well I did it anyway. When i first started really looking at the services speed I became unhappy with it (774/329 kbps) so if i were to review the isp with those numbers it wouldnt have recieved any high marks from me, but thanks to the tweak faq im getting close if not my advertised speed of (2000/384)! The only severe problem is there is still some problems with my Ping but hopefully they can fix that. I kind of feel odd giving out this some what good report about EL cable in my area since this could help some one near me make the jump to EL cable thus helping crowd an already crowded connection, but I feel it was the least i couild do to help, for all the help I have recieved.

Well, I finally got my E--Link cable, and it was well worth the 16 day wait. Let me start a little further back....

I've had E-Link DSL since Aug of 2000, and I've been very pleased until the last the month or so. Outrageous latency, persistent reconnects, line drops, etc. No matter how you look at it, my DSL experience was quickly souring......until my local cable company, Time Warner, gained internet access. Noticing that E-Link offered cable internet access through Time Warner, I decided to get it so I could my same username I had with DSL. Events are detailed below:

Wed, July 10 - I place my order in the wee hours of the morning. Told that Time Warner should be calling me soon to schedule an appt for installation.

Fri, July 12 - Time Warner calls and we schedule an appt for Tues, July 16.

Tues, July 16 - Cable guy shows up 15 minutes after the 4-hour window of installation began (Boy was I shocked!!). He has cable wire and a splitter installed in a matter of minutes. He connects the cable to the modem, powers up the modem, and........nothing. The modem just sits there blinking the cable light for 5 minutes, never "locking." He unplugs the power, and retries again. Same thing. He tells me a technician is gonna have to come out to take a look at it. He says if it's still flashing by tomorrow after 5 PM, power it down, and retry yet once more. If it STILL doesn't lock, place a service call. AAHHH!! I was so close.

Wed, July 17 - Still blinking. Power down, power up. Still blinking. I call Time Warner, earliest time someone can come out is July 31st!! SHEESH!!! OK.

Fri, July 19 - E-Link calls to see how I'm enjoying my new cable service. I tell the guy what happened, and he suggests that I call Tiem Warner back and try to get an earlier service date. I comply.

Tues, July 23 - As I'm picking up the phone to call Time Warner, cable guy shows up at the front door of my apt building. He comes up, brings a TEST modem, an older model Toshiba than the one I was left with during installation. The TEST modem "locks" almost immediately. I suggest that if he can't get mine going, that he should leave me the one he has. He says it's his TEST modem, so he can't. Oh well. He never gets it going, and leaves about 30 minutes later. Me? Still no cable.

Thur, July 25 - I call Time Warner placing a service call for later that day. Lady shows up, a very nice young lady. She runs into the SAME problem, but at least she brings a tester. After being here for well over an hour, we both agreed she should leave her test modem, and take the Toshiba PCX2500 I had. Before she did, she tried another 2500 with no success, and ended up leaving me her Toshiba PCX1100U. All in all, it was worth the minor downtime.

Let's just say I'm flying along now!! The best I got from E-Link DSL with my approx 5000 ft from the CO was about 800kbps. During the last month or so, it's fluctuated between 200-600kbps. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I had to disconnect and reconnect, turn off and turn back on the DSL "modem". It was crazy.

But with cable so far, I've maxxed at about 5800kbps, and the slowest I've tested is 2900kbps. Let's just say I'm very pleased.

So, dropping from a price of $49.95/month with DSL to $41.95/month for cable was a no brainer. But the best part, is that you don't have to login liek with DSL. So, as soon as my Linux server boots, with eth0 set as DHCP, everything comes right up. TOO SWEET!!!

Man, i love this ISP.. Install process was very nice. A guy came from timewarner and he knew that I had 3 computers and told me to use router. I had no idea about router before. (he told me he shoudnlt tell me about that I never got ping over 100 even in peak time when I play multiplayer game!! Some people says newsgroup or smtp or something like that is problem but I don't look at those things. I get customer service so fast.. I don't have to wait all day to receive e-mail. I can't believe I had Bellatlantic for 500 and slow upload for $40. This ISP rocks and I worths me money. YEAH BABY~~

Very quick to install, reliable connection. Speeds never down below 1800/360. Pings are 20-35. Gamer's dream. If you are in New York, go get it NOW. No contract.

I used to have DSL before and was a big fan of it, I even used to bash cable users... Well, as of now (4 months with ELC), the only disadvantage is the dynamic IP, but you get that with many DSL packages too. The speeds are greater that of DSL and I got nothing to complain about whatsoever.

UPDATE: Beware of the subcontractors that TW uses for installation. Those guys know practically nothing about it. They never bother to check for signal strengh or give you the best local routing possible. Had problems due to that, fixed now.
