We were caught (make that trapped) in the Mediaone/Comcast changeover, and very unhappy about the changes. Much slower speeds than promised, unreliable service and nonexistant tech support.
Then Wide Open West began offering service in our area. We spoke with a very helpful person named Ed, who set us up with new internet service and television cable service. We ordered basic analog cable tv, and internet speeds of 1500/256 for a total of $75 per month.
The next day, the installer arrived on schedule with our equipment, and we were live and on the air in an hour.
The initial speed test was very slow, so we called tech support. There was no being put on hold, and the tech support person had the glitch fixed in less than a minute. It was a just mistake in the initial order. Someone typed in the wrong number, and we were getting a package with slower speeds. Quickly adjusted.
The speeds have been consistantly over 1800/500 with no slowdowns, and we couldn't be happier with the change.

Summary says it all. Dumped Mindspring for WoW. You can reach customer service by phone with no wait, the installed happed on the right day, everything worked from the get-go. Hopefully the newsserver will add newsgroups as users increase. Also will be interesting to see if the high level of customer service is maintained as they add users. Megapath speed: 1.275/.310 - Speakeasy: 1.556/454. Much better than Mindspring which advertised 1.5/384. $34.95/month with "hot box" digital cable. Scientific Atlanta WebStar DPX100 cable modem.

When I first got WOW installed about three weeks ago service was great for about one week. But as time goes on the dowloads are getting slower and the pings are getting longer. I am now getting downloads between 150-400 and uploads of 100-150. I have no idea what is happening and Neither does WOW. If this keeps up I will be back to connecting my Sprint Wireless.

I am thankful that I have a location where I have a choice of ISP's. In November, I had a decent one, which was bought out by the worst one which raised the price, installed spyware software, capped service and did not function properly.
Now, I'm WOW'ed. 2000 down and 500 up. WOW claim, 1500 down, 300 up, and no more that 400 addresses per node. Dynamic IP address. No modem rental fee. Friendly, quick, knowlegeble customer service.
**I am also a cable TV subscriber @ 46.50/month for basic digital. Overall, about $5 less and much better value for the money spent.

speeds reaching 2.6Mbps (while sharing with another PC)....three dynamic IP's standard with an option for a static.....installation was for the day and time i first requested, they were prompt and efficient, they use a ScientificAtlanta WebStar modem (no rental fee), and dont load any software on your PC........tech support is fast and helpful.......YOU choose all the names of your email addresses (all the ones i wanted were available)......pricing is right, three different speeds for three different prices, with an option for a WOW discount of $10 a month. not bad.

Phone sales was very informative....very corteous....told him what I had and what I wanted....THE SAME THING I had....The price offered was awesome. Installation went off without a hitch, on time and when promised and no installation fees. But once tech left and got on and started surfing...was very disappointed. The speed is no where near what they said. I called and was not kept waiting long.....the tech was very corteous and said there was a servor issue in our area...and they were "WORKING ON IT". Gave me a credit and said give it a week. No difference at all. I called because after only 7 days of service I recieved first bill and was NOT what I was told. Was abobut $30 more than told. The call was 3 days ago and am still waiting for the "supervisor" to return my call, as he was extremely busy. I have yet to hear from them. And the speed is still no where near what they promised. I hear things abobut "tweaking" but have no idea what this is. Also someone said they changed settings in Windows. I am not into changing things like that on my own. I am running Windows ME and a Compaq 733 mghz. Anyone suggest anything?
UPDATE 5/10- I am getting speeds now of 2.2 megabits DL....and 500 UL They had forgot to turn on the advanced cable I ordered. All is good!

"Excellent pings, above advertised speeds, and far superior customer service."
"They're a new service, so they're working out some kinks."
"I was stuck with Comcast since they used my city as a test zone, and they've gone steadily downhill. WoW is their opposite."

I ordered the advanced service the day it was announced that my city was ready for WoW conversion. My setup date was three days later. Hell, if my connection is completely dead it takes Comcast atleast a week to get out here. So, on the day of my connect, I went to run some errands, and a sibling showed them my computer. They didn't install any crap like @Home's toolbar and what not. Got me up and running, and even made sure my connection was fine (checked my speeds and latency for me to make sure there were no problems). I still have Comcast installed, but I'm NEVER able to reach the advertised speeds (1.5 mbit and 128 kbit), and it's not a problem on my end. The ping to my gateway is a constant 9-10, whereas Comcast is anywhere from 30-180 at almost any given time. Comcast tech support is the type of person who just found out that computers are in homes now, and WoW's won't waste your time if they don't know what you're talking about. Instead, they'll transfer you to their tier 2+, and get it straightened out, and even offer to call YOU back instead of you waiting on hold.
The only problem I see is that they're working on their network, so sometimes there's problems, but they're steadily fixing it. Comcast would blame it on their customers, instead of sending some technicians out to the physical location of the problem and work on it. When the service is running properly (no bad router from AT&T), the pings (game-speaking) are anything but Comcast; clear, no huge fluxuations, and reliable.

When I heard that WOW was going to be in my area, saying that I was looking forward to getting it would be an extreme understatement. My former ISP was horrible. I cannot say enough about WOW's commitment to the customer. After WOW notified me that service was available in my area. They came out and hooked me up when it was easiest for me. After the install they called me and asked how everything went (imagine that). Speeds were up and down for a while, but at I knew they were truly working on the problem and not blaming customers. Well everything in my area seems to be ironed out and I am getting speeds in the 1500/400 ballpark. Which is fantastic since they only advertise 1500/300. Imagine an ISP actually setting up their caps higher than what they advertise so the paying customer is happy. Anyways for all you people in Michigan who have problems get WOW if you can. Both of my neighbors are switching as well.

I think WideOpenWest has a great future if they continue to offer the speeds and customer service that they do currently. They did just start in MI so I can overlook the news server problem (for now).
I have nothing but good things to say about WOW, if there is ever a prob they go out of their way to offer a solution... Something my former ISP never even dreamed of.
