I ordered the 1500/300 advanced package at 39.99 a month. The order process was great the lady I talked to was very nice. I got a free use of a modem, which is good. my other company didnt offer us free anything . 3 static IP's I hear are also a good thing, I have yet to set all of them up. I havent checked the mail server or news yet, seeing that I use the newspaper to get news, Im assuming it was all good. Realible service on my end. No problems yet.

When the man showed up, i was just waking up, that shows how early they come. I was the first on the list. He went straight on asking how we wanted it setup. Afterwards he went out, got the cable going and had it up and ready quickly. After coming in. he setup the computers, but we had some problems. come to see that we had the router all mixed up. I put it back to the way it was before i got the new service and it worked great. Speeds are very fast I am pleased. Monthly charge is also good. I recommend this to all In Cleveland area who their service is avil. I havent got a disconnection yet or have had an probs as of 2-10-03. Get the service now, and lock in your rates til Jan 2004 is all I have to say.

No bumps!

I have the same exact service. I have had it now for about 9 months and I haven't had one problem. WideOpenWest's cable is very reliable and fast, I definately recommend it! And I also live in the Cleveland area.

WOW in Shaker Hgts,Ohio

I signed up for the advanced download service last month. Only one outage since then, for about two hours. Speeds have been consistently at 1500/275, just as expected. They have blown away my former Earthlink DSL service in speed, customer service and billing, and RELIABILITY!

I just hope they don't add too many connections and slow the whole damn thing down.......

So far so good...I have nothing bad to say about Earthlink, the only thing is...Some of these companys have to step up to the competitive prices that are going on now or they will lose all of their customers.....Even after my first 10 months WOW will only be 40 dollars a month which is still cheaper...and faster

A happy surfer, that's me. Every contact with WOW has been with a courteous person who if he or she doesn't know the answer knows someone who does. Until they sign up more users onto their system in my neighborhood I was told to expect very fast connections. The man was not wrong. The only equipment I bought was a RealTek 10/100mbps ethernet card to replace the el' cheapo one that AT&T put in when they installed their service. I have a dynamic IP. I am paying for 3000/3000 service and was told to report if it ever falls below for any extended length of time. My speeds right now stay over 10mbps almost all the time. My installers were on time and finished the job promptly. My monthly price of $44.95 is less than I paid for the "Other" service by a dollar. Not needing a modem is nice side benefit of this service. WOW fiber optic is the way to go if you can.

2-14-03

I"ve had WOW for about a year and I had my first major problem yesterday. My connection was fine at noon, but when I came home in the evening nada, zip, nothing. I called support had a tech in about 5 minutes. We did the whole reboot, throw away the router, and release and renew the IP thing. No signal. The tech scheduled a truck for 8:30 this morning, with instructions to call 20 min. before arrival so I could get there from work. I rec'd a call from the tech at 8:20. We met at the house at 8:35. He traced the line back until he found a failed connection in the box at the pole. He repaired the connection, my speeds are better than before and I was on my way back to the office at 9:15. You can't ask for much better service than that!

Re: Nice!

I've heard conflicting stories on why they have halted construction. I heard that they were waiting until spring when the ground isn't frozen any more and it's easier to dig and I've also heard that it is getting very expensive for them to continue the construction. They have rolled out cable services in other states and I think they are hoping the revenues from those prospects will help them with their effort in laying fiber here in Colorado. I guess they don't want to end up like WINFIRST. Smart move on their part for offering cable services elsewhere while they build a fiber network here.

I would love those speeds and being so close has really made me anxious.

We have some major fiber moving in here with level 3 and qwest using denver as the base of their operations. We have yet to see any deployment of that fiber to their customers. WOW is using level 3's fiber to provide us with some sort of infrastructure in our neighborhoods.

Let me start off by letting you know that I pay my bills on time all the time.

WOW calls me today and claims I owe them $180. WHOA! HOW?!?!

Well, it dates back to November. I moved from an apartment to a house and at the time I had Digital Cable w/ all the channels + cable modem. Got services established at the new place in December. I figured because I didn't live in my apartment for all of November and obviously can't use their services, I could call in and get a partial-credit. They told me I could. So the account was zeroed out.

On the same call, I get my services switched from Digital to just Basic w/ HBO since I don't watch all the channels. They tell me my new bill is $67.53 and that I'd be getting a revised bill in the next week or two.

So I get the bill... open it up, and it's $90 somethin. I call in "WTF, why is this $90?" They tell me "That's how much it is for your services. Advanced internet with Basic cable and HBO" I tell them "No, it's $67.53, as noted in my account."

"Oh, there are no notes in your account." Great, so now they don't take notes of calls they get or when their own customers put in a service change request. It's BS because... well, how did they know I had basic if previously I had digital? The magic service changing fairy must've shown up, huh!?

So after a week of arguing with them, they finally realize they packaged it wrong and fix their mistake.

During that time I wanted to establish my email so I could use Usenet. I managed to get a lippy technician who claims he can't set my email up unless I'm calling from home (I told him I was calling from work, where I was.) So I ask him why, he doesn't give me a straight answer... so I ask to speak with his supervisor, he hangs up on me. Disgruntled employee?

So anyway.. fast forward to Friday. I get a call saying I have an outstanding balance. "Uh... no. I don't." I look at my bank statement which shows 2 payments I made for December and January.

I call back and they tell me that my previous account from November wasn't zeroed out. Coincidentally, the person who zeroed it out didn't even make a note of it. So... I guess I'm making it up now, eh?

Anyway, they decided to take payments made to my NEW account and use them in my old one, even though it has a balance of 0. Mind you, they have a SURPLUS of money from me. They proceed to tell me I haven't paid my new account in 3 months and that the payments that were just made were to pay off the old account, which has a 0 balance. How does one pay off an account with a 0 balance?!

Ah yes... the nice employee who failed to make note of the time when they zeroed my account. So their stupid mistakes cost me a LOT of money.

So how does it add up to $180? They can't prove it to me. I told them to cancel my account because I'm goin back to COMCAST, also adding that I refuse to pay a balance that someone else's mistake created. They proceed to tell me they'll send collection agencies after me.

Wow, what a NICE FRIENDLY ISP.

They never note your account, so whenever you need to prove something, you get "Well, we don't have notes for you on that day." The tech/billing people only give you their first name, so you can refer to a call you made on December 14 to "David", but what good is that? How many Davids do they have working for them? They don't give out reference #s at all. So how in the WORLD can I prove that someone agreed to zero out my account? I CAN'T and it's BS. Instead I tell them "It's not my problem if one of your workers promises to do something and doesn't follow through with it." and the accountant responds with "Actually, it is your problem." What?! I'll take my money elsewhere.

So as a result... I get screwed.

What can a lowly consumer like me do? Obviously the only choice I have is to sit back and take it. I'm going to make a complaint to the Attorney General. Hopefully this will take care of some issues with them.

I think this should be illegal. You can't just magically charge someone $180 and move two payments, made to one specific account, to a completely different one.

Not to mention the cable connection goes out 4-5 times a day EVERY DAY.

Horrible service. I recommend everyone leave them.

Regardless, I'm going to Comcast and taking advantage of their reduced billing by switching from a competitor! Maybe after those few months are up... I can switch back to WOW, take advantage of a "Switch from Comcast, get $29 a month service" I could keep that up..

What?!

hmm .. sucks to be you, i have not had a single billing issue with them, and the tech support is far superior than Comcraps anyday (except for the hold time), and service wise i've only been down 2 times for minor system upgrades, but the only problem with what you think you might do is, when you switch back to Comcrap and take advantage of the 3 months of cheap rates and decide Comcrap still blows, when you try to switch back to WOW they will deny you the cheaper rates because you just canceled their service, you would have to wait at least 6 months to a year to take advantage of it.but good luck anyways

you must be very unlucky as well, wideopenwest is the best cable company in the us. you just got the wrong person at the wrong time. i'm sure if u raised hell right away, that might be the reason, wow's support is very great, but they are not going to put up with ignorant people, not saying you are, but a lot of customer support people don't like when people piss them, there people too, lol . mistakes where made, but you think your going to beat wow's 54.99 for both cable and hsi (1500/300)? i'd tell you to stick with them a little longer, because i've had them since they took over americast and they are great, sorry to hear your problems. good luck!

Re: lol

You people are in ENTIRELY different areas than I am.

Westland is quite a hike from Utica. Strongsville, OH is also nowhere NEAR me. Completely different service areas. You and I are running out of completely different points.

The cable modem worked FINE for a week or so, then started going out, but that doesn't really have anything to do with lack of concern for the consumer which is BS. How they get around the connection issues: Place 90 minute wait queues on the tech line so you waste your evenings trying to get someone to fix their mistake.

Just because you haven't experienced any problems doesn't mean this company is solid gold and uncapable of doing wrong. In fact, you WILL one day find out that when they mess up, they place the blame on the customer and refuse to acknowledge they've done wrong.

Every customer support person I've talked to doesn't know what's going on because they don't note accounts. It took them a week to figure out why I was being charged $90 for BASIC CABLE with just HBO... I mean, come on... and this business with charging me $180 out of the blue?!

Okay, so let's say that I didn't pay my Nov. bill and the balance was still there:

1. When I had the billing issues regarding my $90 packaging instead of my $60 packaging, they would've told me then when I asked "so what's my current balance?"

2. The customer support person I talked to on January 10 told me that she ALSO fixed my account, and that the only amount I owed was $67.53, so I sent it in. She initialed my account and specifically noted in there "He is squared away with his account."

That's two people now, who tell me they're going to do one thing and then go off and do another.

Now, you might say I'm unlucky, but no, that's not the case. I've spent hours upon hours on the phone with these people. *I* know how they are when dealing with this type of problem.

The billing error is NOT my mistake, yet they're charging me these OUTRAGEOUS fees for no reason and I can't do a damn thing about it. Why? Because they have the upper hand and they tell me "Then go elsewhere, we'll still send collection agencies after you."

That's not really friendly, and I'm sorry, while you guys are SOLD on the connection speed, it's all about customer support and how you treat people. Just wait until YOU have issues, then you'll be singing an entirely different tune.

Almost every review in this place for WOW is good, and you guys are going entirely on connection speed COMPARED to other ISPs. You aren't doing a true review on the ISP itself. Compared to Comcasts RATES, WOW is better. They are EQUAL in connection. It's funny, because I can easily find 3 or 4 WOW customers in completely different areas that will give the same review I do.

And regarding beating the price, yes, I called Comcast and they will match and discount me an additional $10 the price I'm getting through WOW.

I really don't want to switch because it's a headache that I shouldn't be dealing with, but what if I stayed with WOW and they dumped another $180 charge on me 3 months from now? They might as well flat out say I owe them $1000 and run free with collection agencies on me. It's not fair.

well every time i have called for support yes i did have to wait on the phone and they were/are always aware of their network issues unlike Comcrap who has no idea when their network goes down, were are all connected to the same headend in Troy (just so that you know that were are all on the same "point") there are a few other people here on dslreports that have not had any/many issues over there in Westland. More than likely its your attitude towards them on the phone, you wanit on hold then you get all pissed off and start yelling at the tech on the other end, and if that is the case you totaly deserve it, try to get Comcrap to match like you said but i guarantee it will only be for 6 months at most it will not be for life.

Although I havent had these kinds of problems with WOW, I've had this kind of stuff happen to me with other companies.

Here are some things I would try:

Send a registered or certified letter to someone in their executive staff, their names and addresses are online.

Be polite, and try not to voice your anger in the letter, as you'll probably get a better reply from them. Explain the situation. Ask them to send you an detailed and ITEMIZED description of every charge ever incurred on your account.

This way you can prove which ones you paid and which ones you did not pay, and why you did not pay...example (I moved, I brokered a deal with Joe Schmoe from WOW C.S.)

The fact that you're sending a registered or certified mail goes to your cause should any of this lead to legal proceedings.

If they do send you to collections or report anything on your credit report, you can file a grievance against them and report them to the FTC, FCC, and your Citizens Utility Board. Most telcos hate CUB cause it always ends up coming back to bite them in the arse. I am not sure what the implications for a cable company are, but probably the same.

Lastly whatever you do never pay an ISP via credit card or check, always use money orders.

Hope this helps,

BogdanSUA

I was watching things very carefully when WoW starting to roll out service in my area. I had switched to WoW for Digital cable earlier, because Comcast's General Instruments DigCable box was bad at picking up signals from my Tivo for channel changes (well known fact in Tivo forums) so I moved to get a better cable box.

When word got out that my area was being turned on, I was on the phone the same day. I had planned on using my own Cable Modem (since I already had one) but was told that self-installs were not being done. I knew this to be untrue, since many in the WoW forum had done so. I went up 2-3 levels of manager, but nobody knew anything about this. I finally accepted a install date, and posted in DSLR forum about my issue. I heard back from a VP @ WoW via forums and email the next day. She was very sorry about this, and said they were doing self-installs. She arranged it so that I got an install the next day (Saturday) which was not availible when I first called, and gave me my first month free. Very good service.

Install was easy, had no problems, and he was in and out in 15 minutes.

The only issue I have ever was when I was testing out some different Router/Firewall/VPN solutions for work, I ended up not being able to get an IP address, even after modem resets. I had to call and get a tech on the line ('bout 10 minutes wait) and have the clear out the system so I could get addresses again. They allow 3 addresses, but the system seems to like to hang onto MAC addresses. Sort of a pain, if you ask me.

When the install tech came on the appointed day (30 minutes early) he was in & out in aprx 45 min. He had to run another line or he would have been done sooner. The first week or two my speeds were not that great, only because that particular tech did not tweak any settings (but I won't go into that). After running tests on BroadbandReports and following the suggestions for tweaking, my connection went to its advertised speed and beyond and has been there since. I cannot make one complaint about the company. I rated tech support in the middle only because I never had to use them. I also have never had an interuption of service. At this rate I am glad I didn't get DSL for $15 per month more. Anyone in my area considering WOW I recommend it highly.

WOW has offered great high speed internet. It's slightly expensive (49.99) for the non-WOW cable customer. Their technical support is very friendly, and offers real advice. They are always willing to sent techs out. I ordered 1500/300, and I constantly get 1453/294. Very impressive. They issue WEBSTAR DPX100 modems, 3 IP. They use DHCP addresses that expire every 4 days, which is very nice. With 3 IP's you don't even need a router to share internet with 2 other systems... Just plug the modem and computers into a hub and go!

A while ago, my onboard NIC stopped working with WOW. It turned out that their DHCP server had some trouble. they got right on it and fixed it. Very nice service, very nice people. I can't really say much negative.

Great was hoping wow came here did across the st!

Across the st is considered Canton im in Ypsilanti my neighbors across the st are serviced by wow and comcast. Now that comcast has doubled the upload to 256 and download to 1800 im getting 1600/244 consistantly couldnt be happier with them now. The 3 xtra ip's are cool but u say they change every 4 days? mine is dynamic but hasnt changed in a year! and I use a wireless linksys so really no need but cool they give ya the 3. looks like ur getting great speeds with them I know they had some trouble when they first rolled out.
Hope it stays up to par and maybe gives comcast some competition here in A CAMPUS town.

Re: Great was hoping wow came here did across the st!

actually urs prolly renewes every 4 days aswell. most of the time u get the same IP address back, and it only changes once in a year. when he said it changes every 4 days he ment that it renewes every 4 days.

You say the Dynamic IP changes every four days.

Not true for me! I do keep my Linux Firewall PC on 24/7 though. The WOW FAQS say they renew every 4 days. I bet most never change unless the device (MAC address is changing.)

OPPS! I am being REDUNDANT and REPETATIVE -- sorry!

Ordered WOW Digital Cable/Advanced Data services in November. Sales was very knowledgable about heir product and got me all set up. Tech came out and got me set up wverything was great. Then the horror. Roughly every night my analog box for my cable and internet would go out. Found out that sales had me setup for 4 tv's and 2 Data services. Tech support would "boost" the signal from their end and things would go well for a day or two then die again. Tech came out and swapped the modem, same problems. After 2 and a half hours during off peak times I spoke with a gentleman that corrected my setup issues concerning the hook up and was credited a months service contigent that I payed my bill to date. Great problem solved! Well no, it wasnt. Tech came out when internet was working and said "If its working now then Im not gonna ruin a good thing." Three hours later service died again where speed issues with the service to where I was getting 2kb down and 0 kb up. Another tech came out and decded the signals to the modem werent right and he "fixed" that. Three days later things died again. For some reason the problem has corrected itself I guess. Finally almost two months I have gone a week without speed issues. Like I said, when it works it is very good, but the jury is still out on the quality of the product.

problem

Have you checked (or had them check) the coax cabling going to your house from the cable drop, and the cable inside your house? Older houses especially, and new ones with lazy/incompetent cablers too, can have coax other than RG-6 which will mess up your impedance matching and give you all sorts of trouble.

Might be worth a shot.

What part of Columbus are you in? Do you also have Time Warner Roadrunner available?

Re: one other thing

Yeah they have checked all the cables that you had specified. I actually asked them to do this. Im at OSU so yes I can get RR, but I had that a year or so ago and wasnt impressed. Dont get me wrong, I like WOW, but have had some issues with it

Re: one other thing

Obviously experiences can vary even within a metro area, but TW Roadrunner seems to be the clear cable winner in the Columbus area. They also used to have a deal with OSU but I don't know if that's still going. If you are near campus, DSL maybe also be available. Ameritech is actually pretty decent in Columbus too..... I had Roadrunner and had no problems whatsoever but wanted less latency and switched to DSL and love it.

I actually left Ameritech DSL to go to WOW. There was a problem with my apartment that Ameritech didnt know about when they sold me the service. Was happy with it, price was right ($29 a month) but wow doubled the speed. I am happy with WOW when it works and it happens to work well right now
