Eastlink seems to have bumped up everyones speed beyond 10/1 now. They have not advertised it yet, but speeds have jumped at least 50%

hitting 14/1 - 17/1 in various tests online

    Can anyone confirm?

UPDATE: Official today: they bumped all 10/1 customers to 15/1 free of charge!

As with any cable company you never get the advertised speed but seems really less with this one. I have used several different ones throughout Canada and US and find that Comcast had the best speeds with little or no compression. The bottom line is having cable internet on Cape Breton is a blessing compression or no compression this beats dial-up by a mile but as with any luxury in life it costs!

Two years ago when High Speed 10 came out I had a modem which gave me 9700kbps. Unheard of. Then I moved downstairs and had a one-generation older modem and got 8600kbps. Yay.

I moved down the road and sadly into another node which techsupport says is "shared among a lot of others" (CROWDED NODE!) and I am getting 3600!! The tech fed me some nonsense about getting 9000 only if you're a business. BS. I got 1.1MB/s all the time for 2 years.
What the hell is that? I lost more than 60% of my service.
No doubt the node IS crowded, there's a pile of people in this building versus my old one...but techsupport says "there's only a problem when your connection is 3000."

I am paying HighSpeed10 price for 30% of HighSpeed5 performance.

Tech support has good training. Not always the best tho. No apology for my disappointment. Perhaps there are too many splitters on one cable? What do I do now? This speed drop is totally unacceptable for $55/month especially compared to previous speeds.

UPDATE: After I called back and asked that tier 2 call me, someone called back and sent me to trade in my Motorola "BS"4100 to a new SB5101.
Speed test: 10730kb/s, Real World local download: 1.2MB/s

Thankyou tier 2! What a piss off it was to have some girl tell me that "9000 isn't possible, that's only for business". I shouldn't have had to escalate this to tier 2 anyway. She should have investigated further instead of bullshitting me.
Perhaps you should get a job at SuperStore sweetie...

"Best speed for your dollar in Atlantic Canada"

10 Megabits for 45$, no download/upload Cap, you can't go wrong. (2 service bundle).
Ordering and installation were fast and efficient. Onside techs are nice and helpful. Less so with their contracters.

Dynamic IP (but usually lasts 6 months or more)

Speeds are dependant on your area, some have older infrastructure and are slower, others have high saturation of users.

We got about 6Mb with the 10meg service when in Clayton Park, now we live in Kingswood and speeds are usually in the 11Meg range.

We've had a couple of brief outages and sometimes the speeds drop for short periods of time.

On site service is excellent! Though if you are a residential subscriber you have to wait 24-48 hours, business service is recommended if you need faster service.

We also use Eastlink telephone which is good when there is power. We used to have their cable service as well (Bundle) but were very frustrated with the DVR (video recorder), it had lots of technical problems, so we switched to Expressvu

"Excellent speeds and newsgroup access at excellent speeds"
"Time of day issues and random downtime sometimes for hours."
"Compared to Aliant's DSL, Eastlink is better even with their issues."
Pre Sales information:

Value for money:

After my father was on DSL since I moved on in life, I would remote desktop in. I found that Aliant DSL offerings were expensive at best when compared to Eastlink's 10 Megabit. Way back when, it was Dartmouth Cable then Shaw communications we all were happy with the service, but as soon as it became Shaw, within months of signing up with Dartmouth Cable. The connection every day would drop for 2-3 hours and by the time a tech was dispatched the problem would correct itself, every time it rained or there were high winds all I got out of Shaw was a nice red light on the modem. Was eventually told there was a bad node in the area and unless it happened while someone was out on the pole, there was nothing they could do. So Aliant/Sympatico DSL here we come.

Eastlink moved in and took over, people my father knew were getting 10+ Megabit speeds, while he was barely getting 1.3 speeds, even though the upload on Easlink is pathetic compared to local DSL offerings he is more than happy with the service, even with the disconnects his downloading is much faster and gets done faster as well. So it's either stable as a rock DSL and wait forever or highspeed that is unstable time to time for about the same price.

He's happy with the service for the most part, the only real complaint I have is that he was given a really old/discontinued modem that obviously the installer thought he could get away with. I had one look at the modem and told him to take it in for a replacement at an Eastlink kiosk. I hadn't seen a cable modem like what he was given for at least 3-4 years. He did as I asked him to and even the person at the kiosk said "they gave you that? Eastlink is supposed to issue surfboard 5100's to all new customers, no wonder you are having disconnect issues" Sure enough as soon as he exchanged his modem, the disconnects are now few and far between and downloads for the most part are at 10 megabit.

It seems that Eastlink addresses the customer by their know how and if they can, will offload old equipment to new members who don't know any better, and that includes old church members my father keeps in contact with. They were also given outdated, discontinued modems and noticed the same instability.

Contract price not specified.
"Real fast when you are connected at 10mb"
"75% of the time, im at 3.5mb"
"10mb will spoil you... stick with the 5 and save frustration"

Not sure what to think. I was loving the 10m line for a few months. After that, id speedtest at 3.5 down/1up... no matter what time of day it was. I called tech and was told that my account was flagged as virus infected.

Techy asked me if I was dl'n torrents, to which I said 'yup'. He informed that this was the cause and I had been throttled back to the 5m connection because of the mass bandwidth I'd been using. He was cool and 'took that off my account' (whatever that means), asked me to reset the moto and I was set and back to the 10mb

Few days later and im back to the 3.5mbs (always speed tests 3.5)

This time tech seems to be placating me
"its just the time of day. try later."
"nothing i can see wrong. your looking good on my end."

6 months later, still at 3.5/900 (no matter when i try, what i have running)
    Last we spoke:
"yes, I see we have you at 5mbs. Just need to reset your moto and we should be good.
Oh it's still at 3.5? try later this evening. Call if it isnt"

And again, all of the csr's were very polite and pleasant to deal with. I dont fault them. shady mgmt policies, maybe?. 10mb customers lines to 5mb after a few months, see if they notice, deal with it from there?

The 5mb is fine, and plenty fast, but I miss my lucious 10mb line, specially when Im expected to pay for it end of month. Im sure they'll work things out soon.

Uh oh, black heli just came to chase me round. gotta run.

"Best ISP on the face of the planet."

There's no better feeling than downloading a file at 1.1mb/sec... which is exactly what you'll get with Eastlink. I've never seen speeds so fast on a household machine before, and the best part is, it's uncapped! I can download as much as I want and not have a problem! As much as the 10mbit down is awesome, the 5mbit up is sweet as well. I can upload files at 120kbps with a decent server, which is faster than most people get by a lot.

The tech support with EL is amazing, although the more computer-savvy of us might get annoyed at the level they speak (that, however, is not their fault, since many people don't know a Cat5 cable from a power cable). I wanted to exchange my old modem for the newer Surfboard 5100 (to access the 10mbit speeds) and it was incredibly hassle free. I called them up and they told me where to go to get it exchanged, I called them back when it was running to get my MAC address sorted out and I was on my way in 5 minutes.

The only gripe I have is occasionally, maybe once or twice a month my internet will drop it's connection for an hour or so. I don't know what causes this, be it the wiring in my house/neighborhood, or if it's on their side, but it's brief and only a minor inconvenience, and frankly, for the service I get the rest of the time, I really have no business complaining.

I've been a loyal Eastlink/Andara customer for over 5 years and as long as the bandwidth flows, they'll have me as a customer.

I was a MTT customer for 15+ years -- One time the mpowered speed were very fast, but as time when on, and MTT change to Aliant the speeds got to slow, in my opinion, for boadband. I am very happy with Eastlink, and would recommend the company to anyone in the Atlantic Region
