This is an absolute nightmare. I live in Long Beach, MS. We have had Cableone.net for a good while now. But they never do anything to make the service work better. Biloxi, Gulfport, and Pass Christian never has any problems while people in Long Beach have been left in the dark for over 8 months. These problems are getting increasingly worse. 400 pings in games has to go. WHEN the cable actually works I get 15 ping to my server. Slow download speeds and other problems is just not worth the 55 bucks I am paying every month. I can't wait till Bellsouth hurries up and puts a damn DSL center in our area. Which they have also forgot about. Where Biloxi, Gulfport, and Pass Christian have DSL but not Long Beach again.

OK...I'll cover the good, the bad and the ugly in that order.
The Good-
First off, the speeds are very consistent. I download at speeds ranging from 100k/s to around 133k/s (DOWN) and 19k/s to around 25k/s(UP)(for future reference all speeds will be noted in down/up format) from major sources. The speed hasn't shown any major changes the entire time I have had the service. Also downtime has been almost nonexistant. The modem was childs play-if it took me 5 minutes to hook it up, I must've taken a break. Did I mention it's better than dialin and stylin??
The Bad-
The downside to all this is their packages for bandwidth are almost fraudulent. What they called half T1 at the local office when I signed up is actually 1000/200--I think a true T1 is 1.5/1.5 (at least that's what AT&T says...and every other place I have looked) so half should add up to 1.5 one way or another.....it's still 300 off. What gets me is they are still calling 1544/512 "Full T1" on their website (see »myweb.cableone.net/cablemodem/Ca···dem2.asp for reference) For that fact, they won't even show the pricing for it there. While I am paying 59.95 (not including the $10 off for having cable TV) for my "half T1", others are paying much less (usually around $20 less for a 3/1 connection) and getting more out of the deal.
The Ugly-
I got signed up for all of it, and was scheduled for hook-up a good deal later. However, my next door neighbor was getting service installed a few days earlier than I was scheduled to be connected. So I asked the installer if he could do mine while he was already at my house(I live in a duplex). After radioing in, and presumably getting permission, he agreed to install mine too. Big mistake. I expect he was a good cable TV installer, but that man had no clue whatsoever about cable modems....nor did he understand basically ANYTHING that I asked him. After he added another line to the existing installation and had informed me all was well, I attempted to get online. Nada. Nothing. I tried to ask him a few questions, and he looked at me like I wasn't speaking english. So I phoned tech support. All they could come up with was to remove the splitter I had installed inside my home, and replace it with a CableONE splitter(the person I spoke with seemed in a hurry to get me off the line...as soon as I mentioned the splitter I guess he assumed that it was the cause). I simply removed the CableONE branded splitter, tried with no success and called back . Once again-absolutely no help. At this point I gave up on their morons who seemed only concerned about getting me off the phone rather than worry about the real problem at hand. So I tried this, and tried that....until I finally got mad and went outside and started unhooking everything the installer hooked up-starting with the new cable line. Ding, ding, ding-we have a winner. As soon as I unhooked that line(which wasn't connected to the modem) everyone inside started yelling "It came on!!"
Recap - If given a chance to do it all over again....I would. For one simple reason-there are no other choices. DSL misses me by like 10 feet. And I'm not going back to dial-up. What's left?? A managed(READ:WAAAAAAY too expensive) internet service. I want to move to Canada or somewhere where real broadband is reasonable. (and according to one of the fathers of ethernet, braodband is 100m/s )

CableOne has been a great experience for me since starting October 2001. I ordered 400kbps service for $35/mo + $5/mo modem. No ISP charges.
I used to install DSL and would lose money waiting for the ISP to do their job. And local DSL reliability isn't worth the contract. I was up and surfing 10 minutes after hooking up the cable modem. Will switch if and when bandwidth drops but great for now and no contracts!! Paying $5/mo for an RCA modem. POP3 email working great. I like the Dynamic IP that I can release periodically. I experience less than 1 per month downtime usually late weekend evenings.
Do ask for a one month free trial and test it regularly via DLSR (BBR) and see for yourself.
UPDATE: Moved to new house; free install involved running new wire from pole, three drops and a new Surfboard modem. 2 hrs later I'm up and surfing. No worries
UPDATE: Price hike by $5/mo AND speed up +100k to 500k. I don't like price hikes but they didn't have to bump the speed. Seems fair.
UPDATE: Moved to Digital Plus Plan - More channels plus 1 Meg internet for $5 LESS per month. AWESOME job Cableone!!!!
UPDATE: Expecting a 5% price bump in Mar 04. Speed still as advertised. Good spam blocking.
UPDATE: That $4 price hike got me a 2000/100 bump in speed. 3M/300k is SCHWEET!! Thanks C1!!
UPDATE: Smooth Sailing!!

I was one of the first suscribers in the Globe/Miami area after the cable modem setup went public. I have been very happy with the service, I was able to set it up myself (the authorized service tech came when I was at school, checked if the modem could connect, and left the rest to me).
Fully automated signup, making it very easy to get going with it. I did, however, have to buy my own modem from an independent reseller at the time, now I understand that you can rent them.
I since have upgraded to a megabit down, 400 up connection (static IP) for $100 to run my server for www.beanz.bz on it. Even though it was somewhat pricy, I'm happy with the service.

Only had for about 10 days now, first few went fine, then it went downhill fast. I pay for the 800k/200k service and it is rare that I see a speed test over 350k. I have gotten as low as 45k. Latency is terrible, with the broadbandreports.com line monitor having some pings to me over 3000ms. The connection is completely useless as far as online gaming is concerned, everytime I try I get about 5 seconds in a game and then "connection problems detected". I have called CableOne, the local office said they could tell something was wrong, but they didn't know what. The boys in Phoenix gave me some story about my node acting up and they were going to send an engineer to check on it (never saw one). It was hard enough to take when I moved here and had to pay $20 more a month for 1/3 of the speed I got from my last ISP, but this speed and service is horrible. It is too bad there is no other highspeed option in my location. I think CableOne knows that they have the small town people right where they want them and they take advantage of being the only option.
After a email to the manager of the local office, the local "manager of Technical Operations" came over to my house. He was high enough up the chain that his "cable truck" was an Expidition. He was very frank with me and told me some of the problems they are having with the local system and what they are doing to try to fix them. He asked if he could come back after they do the upgrade they are planning for this week and see if it has improved my service. This was a big plus for the customer service side of things, now lets see what they do on the actual service side.
Over a month now and I cannot play online games in the evening at all, I can sometime get a game in during the afternoon. Bandwidth is averaging about 250Kbps, about 25% of advertised. Latency is terrible, almost always >400ms from eaither coast and at times over 1000ms.

As stated above, connection is very reliable - have had no problems in over a year of service. Cost is $34 plus 5$/month modem rental (also have cable TV service with them, cost may be higher otherwise). I get slightly more than advertised speed of 400/128. 15$ more per month gets 800/200.

So, we do lots of online stuff, and it was time to get something beyond dial-up. We heard cable was availible in our area and jumped on it. After calling them up we set an appointment for installation. I could have picked up the Cable modem(which we are renting for $5/month) and set it up myself, but we didn't have a cable line in a convient spot. Once the guy got out here(The local service was pretty busy) it was very quick to get everything installed.
I hook everything up and start to register my cable service, and it gives me an error. I have to call Tech support, who were wuick to identify the modem was still registered to the previous user. A quick update performed by them got it all working.
The service has been very reliable, I've had one outage in the month I've had it, and it was pretty short. Was pretty simple to set up with a router as well.
The $45 is a bit much, but turning AOL to BYOA and ditching our second line cuts that down to about $15 more than before, which is great for how much performance we get.
I highly recommend this service.

For years, I have been hanging onto every word of Cable One and their broadband plans since 2000. Constant delays and uncertainties while my friends in smaller towns get cable modem upset me for many times. But now that I finally have broadband, I don't care about those previous complaints (okay, I actually do, but 'm not complaining anymore).
Last Thursday (11-14-02) I found out by e-mail that cable modem service was now available in my neighborhood. Since I live too far away to get DSL, Cable is my only broadband choice. I tried to get wireless last summer, but I live near too many trees. Anyway, I signed up on Friday for the 800kbps down/200kbps up plan at $50 a month. With DSL, you can get 1.5mbps down at the same monthly price (or many it was $40 a month... darn promotionals!), so Cable One isn't exactly the best value. I went to buy a cable modem, hooked it up, and one reboot later, I was experiencing pure broadband bliss, all on the same day!
As for performance, I think that cable modem has the best ping times. While playing Return To Castle Wolfenstein, I was getting 70ms with 17 other players with nearly a slowdown! Most of my downloads from good download sites are a little over 100k/s, which just blows away my 3k/s dial-up service. There are dynamic IP's assigned for the home plans, but it's a lot better than DSL's PPPoE. Uploads are consistently at 20k/s, which isn't horrible.
If you currently get video service from Cable One, this is the next logical step. Cable One will actually charge you an extra 10 dollars a month for broadband if you don't already have video service from them! This turned a lot of my friend's off to broadband, since they have satellite tv. There is a $35 a month plan that gives you 400kbps down and 128kbps up, but I felt that would be sort of pointless, especially if you are a gamer.
When you can't get DSL or if you don't have satellite, then this is the service for broadband for you. If you are graduating from dial-up to cable modem, you will not be disappointed.

I've had CableONE TV and internet service for about 6 months now. I ordered the basic TV and the highest internet speed possible for residential users which is 800k/200k for $50.. $5 for the modem rental.. You also get dynamic IP's which I dont like but can deal with. Everyday I'm plagued by disconnects, huge amounts of packetloss, and ping times reaching 1 full second, 1000ms+ at times. Its not always like that.. just a couple times a day, everyday. The tech people are morons.. powercycle modem is their solution to everything and its always yours or your computers fault. CableONE is perfect in their eyes. They even told me that my 50ms ping average to my first hop on trace routes, that isnt too far away, is excellent and that anything at or under 3% packetloss per hop was perfect. I'm not an idiot.. I've had DSL and another cable provider before and packetloss was only as issue a couple times a month if that. Ping times were on the average of 4ms on my first hop. Yet always my connection is fine and so forth. I'm switching to BellSouth DSL as soon as I can afford it. I'm tired of screwing with these guys.
This connection isnt good for anything.. surfing is slow when the cable is bad.. gaming is impossible because you never know when the connection is gonna go bad. Same for downloading and every other thing possible. Email is about the only good thing about them.. its never messed up unless my connection is messed up and cant view the page/download to Outlook express.
Bottom line.. if you have another choice.. you're better off going with them even if its more expensive. CableONE sucks royaly.
