Ok where do I start? I first had Cableone when it was first introduced to Pass Christian, MS at my old house. The speed was 'par' for what they say you get and what you actually get. This was back when it was the 1500/150 and changed to 2000/200, no harsh throttling on the bandwidth. I had a great experience back then. Then in comes Katrina and wipes 70% of Pass Christian off the map (could barely find it on the map to begin with). So I moved to Dallas for a few years directly afterwards and was on DSL while there. It was pretty fast and never had any downtime that I can think of besides huge storms (expected).
Fast foward to now. I have lived in this relatively new neighborhood in north Gulfport, MS (built after Katrina) and have had Cableone for about 2 years now (5000/500). I went with them from a past good experience. I haven't been on the heavy bandwidth usage when I have had them this whole time (mainly just ended up playing FPS games and WoW). Up until about a few months ago, I have been introduced to the world of streaming video and bit torrent. Not only that, two of my sisters moved in to occupy spare rooms I had, and they are heavy on streaming video. Once this happened starting a few months ago, we have been fighting each other for bandwidth and actually came up with rediculous scheduling times for who can 'stress' the net. The throttling usually draws anyone's happiness to an end.
On to the horror stories of what's to come. After getting throttled whether it be streaming video or me on bit torrent etc, the connection gets to what seems to be instability. Their throttling of the bandwidth makes me get horrible pings in games when nothing else is stressing the bandwidth (games use low bandwidth too, just require pretty good pings most the time). I then looked up more details on this throttling only to find out it is between the hours of 12pm-12am, WHAT?!... That is an insane time span. Who died and named Cableone tyrant of cable internet? When I am throttled I can get a speed test that verifies I get cut in half 2500/250ish respectively. Ok so the throttle is working perfectly, the problem is when I am throttled, my speeds will spike up and down when doing anything other then a speedtest. Any solid stream of data either big or small becomes a squiggly line that looks like a seizmometer reading in bandwidth AND ping respectively to each other. This means all the things I would enjoy and use my internet for would be used between the hours of 12am-11:59am. Sorry but I do not want to make a schedule around my internet connection.
Ok, so now I was fed up finally tonight. I could not play CoD4, WoW, Warcraft 3, or any online games besides poker. I even tried using my Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii internet multiplayer games and was a sad panda. I couldn't watch any streaming videos except youtube if I was patient enough to wait 3 minutes for a 20 second clip. I can't really try to download anything cool cause speeds drop from 100kB/s to 5kB/s and sit there for the longest time before bouncing back up to 100+ for a few seconds and back down to 5. Basically between the hours of 12pm-12am, no one in the house can do anything involving the internet besides check email or chat on messengers.
I got curious while bored on my sisters IPhone and browsed onto the AT&T website and typed in our house number for DSL prequalifications. Low and behold!!! It says we prequalify for Fast Access DSL Extreme 6.0 (6000/512) for the low price of $43 and FREE modem +$150 cashback for switching from cable internet! Not only is it a lower price, it sure does beat $53+$6+Tax. I will aso get whatever speed I sync in at 24 hours a day 7 days a week, no lame gimmicks. Too good to be true? I think not. Anyway, I am fed up with Cableone and put in the order for DSL. If I like what I get, I will walk out to the box myself and clip the coax line from the house and give it a proper burial.
The end result, Cableone just blows now. I used to like them when they first started up cable internet down here at the beginning of the broadband revolution, but now they are just out to get cheap highs, low grade liquor, and $5 dollar prostitutes with the money they steal from the consumers and shoddy internet service.
Update 10/13/08
Well today was judgement day for modem arrival. I got the motorola 2210. This thing is rather tiny compared to any 'modem' i have seen. It is about the size of a radar detector or pda phone. Setting it up without the cd was rather simple. After that, I set it to bridged ethernet mode so my router can take over on logging in and out. I would prefer the modem to be in the room of one of the computers, but the only phone jack I have in the house is in the kitchen -_-. Oh well, it is all good. My DLink N router is doing great wirelessly. The modem syncs up pretty damn fast, talking about maybe 20 seconds. It took my cable modem longer to sync up. Browsing around in the modem's setup pages, I am at 8000mbps/512mbps on Fast mode. Everyone got home right around the time when I finish setting everything up and took it for a test drive. I set the QoS on my DLink to prioritize my torrent packets as last and multimedia is second with games and messenging in first place of priority. I have to say, everyone is doing what they do best on the net and there is no lag what so ever. I can play an FPS shooter game with >80 ping with torrents running in the background and sisters are streaming videos, one of which is netflix. In short, I love it! Much better then my cable EVER was. Good bye CableOne!

| I agree. I agree that throttling is ridiculous. We like to stream lots of shows and it sucks when netflix is throttled right in the middle of a show and say it will takes 43 minutes to recover.
The throttling here doesn't really affect the ping times though.
I also use packet8 with cableone and have been throttled to 1/2 speed and packet8 still works great.
Oh yeah we have the 3mb\300kb package for $43. Could be better, but the lack of options here in Idaho.
If you like to use torrenting just set it up to download between midnight and noon.

1 edit | Re: I agree. I am probably going to drop CableOne for good. Today CableOne's undertaker showed up to my door. It was the DSL tech guy! He had nothing but great news for me, call him my internet Prozac. So a short summary of the days to come, he showed up to do the 'dirty work' of the DSL setup. Basically he came out and activated my line and test the signal. I talked to him a bit asking if the signal looks good. He says it is as strong as it can get and turns and points at a house across the street and diagonal to me. I was dumb founded and asked "what are you pointing at? that house? what about it?" He goes "no, that huge steel box sitting in their yard is fed by fiber, and your lines are fed from there to the house. you should get your 6.0 extreme service EASY without a hitch." I was happy to find out what that huge steel box was lol. It is maybe 100 yards from my house (300ft.). This translate into good bye CableOne. I can finally kiss bandwidth throttling, spiking pings, and high prices good bye.
I will get to take my DSL on a test drive later today when my 'Welcome Kit' gets here from UPS. It is basically the setup CD and DSL modem. I won't be nervous at all to plug it in. Monday, I will give CableOne a call and say they can come pick up their modem cause I will 'accidently' cut the coax from my house and cancel the service. Expect a AT&T DSL 6.0 Extreme service review soon.

| Cable one sucks ass They are throttling me, with their ridicilous 12-12 policy.
Latency (ping) to game servers goes up to 200-500.
That is not gonna cut it, I pay 140$ a month for their services to fuck me over.
I think not.
Tomorrow morning, I will call Directv and get DSL from the rotten Qwest.
Fuck you Cable One.

| Re: Cable one sucks ass Yea I thought the same thing, 'they used to be great!'. While they are being internet nazi's, they should just start limiting us to only a hand full of websites that we can access. The owner of CableOne must be best friends with Fidel Castro. Ever since I went to AT&T DSL, I never looked back. 6meg service 24 hours a day 7 days a week!. | |

CableOne tech showed up yesterday (1 day install), i ordered tv, and internet. I subscribed to the 8m service and 2 hddvrs, with their digital package etc. Both the hd-dvr boxes were motorolas, as well as the cable modem (which was significantly smaller than when I last had the service years ago)
Switchover from my old dsl was a snap, removed the pppoe settings from my Linksys, and plugged it in, everything else was automatic. The installer was great, install was honestly a total of about 45 mins, mostly because I did all of the home theater connections myself (and very quick too, switching them out from my old Directv hd box)
On average, I am getting about 8.4Mbps download and about 605 upload, the last one done 5 mins ago at 8pm MTN time, and my ping times are about 40ms quicker than my old 7m Qwest dsl, I beleive because my first hop is a 10 min drive, not 5 hours...
Overall, very happy with the new service, channel listings are taking a while to get used to, but very happy.

I've had this service for 3 years at my current address and for a couple of years at a previous address and I have to say that it has been good enough for me to stay. I bought a Motorola modem on Ebay rather than pay them to rent one. It would be nice if it didn't have the weird slow page loads that I have been noticing lately. Speedtests show that I am getting the 3Mbps I am supposed to get. For the same price maybe I should switch to Qwest's 7Mbps service.

We are finally getting the speed and reliability we were promised 3 1/2 years ago. After 2 1/2 yrs. and umpteen service calls they sent out a manager who discovered that all the connectors were outdated and inferior. After he left, our connection and speed has been good. We are getting at or above the 3 megs we have been paying for. Unfortunately they didn't feel compensating us for 2 1/2 yrs. of poor connections was warranted. They did however give us a break on 1 month.... whoopee

Where to begin.
Constant rate increases. Services dropped such as newsgroups and channels removed with no notice and no replacements. Speed caps. $17.00 a month for a DVR. A digital box is now required if you want to get your premium channels on each TV. HD channels that are always pixilated never an issue when I play HD DVDs. No same day service. Constant rate increases. You can tell this one really bothers me.
I have been a customer for over 20 years and would switch in a heartbeat if there was another cable option in town.

Installation was okay. The actual install went smooth, and fairly quick, once the tech got there. What really bites, is when you schedule your install, they give you an 8am-5pm window! They don't even give you the option of a morning, or afternoon install. And it's M-F only, so plan on taking a day off work. That's really frustrating! They wouldn't even agree to calling an hour before they showed up, so I couldn't go to work, and then drive home when they called.
One thing I really despise about CableOne is their advertised $29.99 prices. Great price, but what they don't come right out and tell you, is that this is a 6 mo. introductory price. The price after your first 6 months ends up being $43.00 after all taxes and fees.
Not bad, but not great either - especially when the DL is only 3MB. Upload is a measly 256kb - slooooow. When I was in Seattle, and had comcast, I paid the same price, and had 6M DL speeds. And that was over 2 years ago.. not sure if they've increased their DL speeds since then, or not. If I you want a 5MB pipe with CableOne, you have to pay an extra $10. To be fair, upload with Comcast was only 384kb, so not that much better, really.
However, I really don't care for CableOne as a company, and do feel they're providing less for your money, just because the competition in this area is very limited. Wishing there was another alternative, or that Comcast would take over servicing this area.

I used to have Qwest DSL, which, given the area, offered only a paltry 1.5mb line, so, when I finally decided I was ready to move on to cableone again (something I wanted to avoid) i decided to.
Unsurprisingly they have implemented throttling, removed Usenet servers, however, they have increased speeds, though the 20 dollar price jump of 32 to 53 dollars a month is a bit of a reach, considering the price jump from 5mb to 8mb is a mere 10 dollars a month
Given however, that I was getting the package deal for 6 months, of cable, internet and phone, I decided 5mb was the way to go.
A few notes so far:
For the past 5 months the service has been great, at first I was very angry about the throttling, but then I realized within the first day of when I got throttled it STILL was 110KB a second faster than my old DSL. Honestly, they can throttle me all they want during the day because it's STILL faster than qwest DSL. Very few people realize that where I live, DSL has a max speed of 156KB/s for qwest. There is another company called Long Lines but they only over 3mb service if you live right by then. other than that it's 1.5mb.
The max download rate is usually in the 650KB/s range, I was surprised that it was 100KB over the max of about 550KB a second max for a 5mb line, I'll take the positives where I can get it.
Now, onto a few of the negatives, they didn't provide me with a terribly huge amount of information or anything with lots of fine print to read, or if I did, they tried to push me along as fast as possible so I couldn't read any of it, it was frustrating to encounter such resistance to reading ALL of the details. The modem they give you if you also plan to use their phone service is rare, I tried to look for it so I could buy it, but I couldn't find it anywhere, ugh, guess another 8 dollars they are nickel and dimeing me out of.
But a surprise to me was their customer service, some of them were bad, but there were more people who actually were doing a good job. That was shocking.
But this is STILL an ISP where you should probably have an intermediate knowledge about computers.
Overall, I am quite satisfied, but will be waiting until the day that qwest offers their 7mb service here in Sioux City, the day that comes, I am out of cableone for good. But since it's what here, it's the best in the area...I really can't complain, it's still faster than DSL even when throttled, that's a laugh huh?

This is STILL better than the 1.5MB DSL i used to have.

From the time I called till I was online was maybe 15 minutes, but it took me a bit longer to get my network all set up. I was amazed at the speed....I subscribed to the 3000/300 and after tweaking my mtu and rwin numbers, I went to dslreports and measured my speed on Speedeasy's speedometer and was amazed at getting 2839/279 or a download transfer rate of 354.9 KB/sec and it does measure out to that.
I previously had BellSouth Fast Access 3000 and never got over 1400 kbps.
I am extremely happy so far with Cableone. If my connectivity is as good as it was with BellSouth, I will stay happy.
11 May 2007 Cableone Rocks...
Download Speed: 5169 kbps (646.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 477 kbps (59.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
was my latest reading and I have had that consistent for around 10 months. I would absolutly never go back to dsl.....
15 August 2007 For the past month, my service has really rocked....My latest reading taken just a few minutes ago was as follows:
Last Result: Download Speed: 8308 kbps (1038.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 550 kbps (68.8 KB/sec transfer rate) I have been getting this consistently for about a month. sometimes it is over 1000kbps.
Alll I can say is the service here on the gulf coast is fantastic!!!
