I recently moved from where I had Bellsouth DSL and the Dish Network for over two years, so I was hesitant to go back to copper for anything. However Best Buy had a Motorola Surfboard 4200 modem on sale for $70. I got the modem, set up the computer where it was looking at Insight's registration page and called their customer service number. The CSR was insistant on sending out a field tech eventhough I told her I had it running, I just needed to sign up for an account. I waited a day and called their tech support number. Over the phone he had me running in 15 minutes after making some tweaks on the proxy server setting. If you can set it up yourself, I highly reccomend doing so. Save you $100. And shop around for DOCSIS modems, you might find a better deal than what Insight has. Right now I'm running about 1337kb/100kb. Faster than my former DSL connection which never reached a meg.

Now using "RCA md dcm205" corrected intermittent connections. I only had one tech call to come out. When I had to goto the main ofc the tech get me bad directions. To test RF & correct intermittent connection. Ping Times are great w/ in 50ms. Newsgroups are limited only 34k & retrention of content is short & limited. Unable to run diags SNMP is turned OFF.

I've had the service for a little over a month now and have had no unexplainable down times. The service flies, even during peak times I don't see any loss in speeds. The only complaint I have is the Service Activation C.D. when I tried to use it the software said something about no connection through NIC, but I was using an ethernet card... Called the local tech support and they walked me through the manual registration and haven't had any problems since. Overall I'm very pleased with this service

Insightbb.com has been outstanding since it has switched from the @home network.

The email used to be down much of the time with Insight@home, but ever since they have moved over to insightbb.com the email I use has not been down not even once.

The connection has been completely outstanding. The bandwidth I receive in Greenfield, IN has been great even during the peak evening hours. I really do not notice much of a difference in bandwidth even then.

I am very pleased with the service I have received. The few times I have had to call support they have solved my issues even though it has taken a few minutes to get ahold of them... I'd rather wait 15 minutes in the queue to reach a technician that can fix my problem than to get a person who tells me they will call me back in an hour, and its days before you hear word and they still don't have it fixed! =)

Anyways, I would recommend their service to almost anyone that wants a fast reliable Internet Connection for non-business use.

The biggest downfall on the service is they do not offer static ip options. It's DHCP. However my IP has not changed in a month or more...

"They dont understand what online entertainment is."

"The reason for the 128 cap is that this service is for ENTERTAINMENT purposes only. It's in the Eula that you AGREE to. This keeps people from running any type of servers and hogging their neighbors bandwidth etc..etc.."

    D.McCall

    InsightBB.com'

I would consider online gaming a VERY big point for ENTERTAINMENT purposes and with 128k max upstream (I usually only get about 80-90) it is NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE to play a lot of newer online games. Especially FPS which are my favorite genre. That aside, the downstream is always abundant, more than you'll ever be able to use at any given time. I have over 3000 downstream and have never maxed it out or even gotten above 2000 at a time in transfer. As for tech support, I always call the local office and they are always courteous and efficient. Had packet loss on my lines once, I called them and it was fixed within hours.

I've been on the network for a long time now, an original @home customer and now Insight. Insight is a great improvement in service as for tech support and hardly any downtimes, at least in my area. But again, the Upstream cap just sucks and for that reason I'm shopping around for something better. It makes no sense to have 3000 downstream which you can never achieve at one time but be stuck with such a crappy upstream. I'd much rather have 1500 downstream and 500 upstream. And they could prevent people from running servers by other means rather than upstream limitations.

"Getting misinformed by sups and techs"

Ordered during the transistion period when insight was switching from the old @home to their own network and was not taking new customers. Was told a date it would be available and ended up being two weeks after that they called and was able to place order. They were out to install within 5 days but was not much for them to do since I once had the @home service and a modem all they needed to do was put in their proxy to configure what they needed to provision the modem. For that reason I got installation charges droped to $35 instead of the $99.95 but was told several times before getting to the right person that I would have to pay the installation charge in full. Working for tech support doing both cable and DSL for the past two years I knew better then to take the word of the first person so kept calling.

Once service was installed it was great for a month or so, speed test coming in at 1300K and Upload at 95K. But after a month started getting DAILY drops in connection sometimes as long as 4 to 5 hours and other times being off for a whole day or two. Started with calling tech support and asking questions they were not used to hearing from a customer due to my working tech support I knew such terminology such as node, UBR (Universal broadband Router), NOC (Network operations Center) and ping times and traceroutes. I don't think tech support was used to hearing why are you sending a truch here when this is a problem on your end and you should be contacting NOC? OK, they set up a truck to come out and I was here but never seen a truck in the neighborhood so 30 minutes before closing time of the scheduled truck roll I called and was told the tech has already been out and fixed the problem but the light on the modem was still blinking, set up another truck roll this time I had to wait another two days for it but it came back up by itself but was off again before the scheduled truck roll was to be here. Again, time for the truck and no show. I was finished calling tech support so called the local office and spoke with a sup there who now said they knew there was a problem but did not know mine was intermident and said he had the same problem at home and they were aware of the issue. OK, from doing tech support myself I knew this could be true so I gave them time to find the problem and now two weeks later which was long enough still having daily drops. So called the office again and taked to another sup who told me they were working on something in my area and were aware of the problem. That was four days ago, still getting daily drops which has went on for nearly a month now, almost time to find a DSL service provider but I really rather have cable.

I had a signal problem with the cable after it was originally installed, and Insight showed up the next day and fixed internal wiring for free (which they aren't required to do). Signal has been fine ever since. Speed tests show 2994/117 as my down/up, not much below the cap at around 3000/128. Only two complaints are upstream and installation costs. The upstream is a nationwide cable co. holdout, and perhaps with good reason. On the other hand, $99 for installation that I could have performed easily enough myself is a bit steep, and the policy should be reviewed. It takes a smoother talker than myself to get the information required out of the tech support people. For $27/month though...(UK student discount), I can't complain very much at all. $7 extra a month to go from dialup to broadband is quite a deal. Overall, I'd much rather take it with the small disadvantages than pay a much higher fee for DSL.

I've only been on insightbb for about 8 hours now, but so far it is working smooth and very fast! The only problem I had was the complete lack of knowledge about availability. last week I was still being told that my area needed to go through a rebuild which could take several months to complete, this week I'm hooked up. The only informed answers I got was after I started e-mailing my area director of ops..

All in all the wait was a nightmare, but the service seems to be quite good.

    Signup:
One big issue with me is dynamic IP's. I hate them. I moved to Louisville and specifically asked if I would be getting a static IP. I was told that I WOULD be issued a static IP. I was very happy until the tech came and looked at me like I was an idiot and said that no one got static IP's it was all dynamic. Other than this signup went ok. Tech arrived on time and got everything rolling.

    Price:
One time fee of $99 for modem purchase which is great. Free install. $45 a
month but get a $10 discount if you have their premium cable package.

    Reliability:
I have had service for 4 months now and have not had 1 second of down time.

    Speed:
Downstream is great 3mbit consistantly never had worse since tweaking.
Upstream is absolutely HORRIBLE 128k cap. This is the worst in Broadand
market issued. If you are uploading something, forget about surfing the net.

    OverAll:
Beats Dialup. However if there were ANY sort of competition in the area I
promise that I would leave for a higher upstream cap.

I have enjoyed my 4 months with InsightBB, the transition from @home to InsightBB went very smooth. I didn't notice anything! Speeds have been a constant 3100/128. No complaints here, although a higher upload speed would be nice. Ever since the transition, I have not noticed any outages or slow speeds. I pay a fixed $34 (own modem) a month and InsightBB has guaranteed not to raise prices through 2002. Hopefully the price will stick for even longer.

InsightBB comes with the extras of 6 accounts, personal web space (60MB) for each account and e-mail forwarding. No complaints here!
