"Great support from Lousiville Lex, HORRIBLE Physical Plant in NY"
"Louisville Lexington. Grab it.... NKY Makes TW seem like the Holy Grail"

I am starting to wonder about the afilliation of Insight and DSL Reports. The techs will tell you they are not even allowed to read it, but obviouslty they do, good for the most part. I don't understand why you always remove negative reviews regarding your service in Northern Kentucky?

The tech experience was just awesome when I lived in Lexington, only having them come twice. When they had a total system breakdown and AOL speeds, they did a excellent job fixing it, with a little Prodding. Louisville, excellent, and they actually set it up right, not using 500 splitters.

NKY, the most horrbile run department of any internet I have ever seen. Yes, even comcast and TW are 100 % better.

The equipement in NKY, is old and they have many problem, which they know, but have orders to NOT do anything to correct it. They do not show for appointments, and their excuses are just out of this world. I have been told they were sold to Time Warner, which would make alot of sense, comparing Louisville and lexington service. I have even been told " our system is designed to work in the winter, so when it get's really cold, it will work as it should. OOOK .

I think that Insight NKY would be better served by being honest with people, intead of putting the blame on the customer, and something that their house and computer did. They are big on this. Then, they Totally make you feel like an idiot, because they are not being truthful in what the real problem is. I think if Terriosts had attack the insight Fiber in NKY, we might have heard about it. DONT BEAT UP your customers.

I do thank the Insight person who obviously stepped in with my problem. 4-5 months is a long time. But I take great exception to the Supervisor, who said, I will run a line to your data ( they do this is lex and louisville) but it wont work" Problem solved. see, we are all not dumb stop treating us like it.

Also, the supervisor acknowledged that Insight has a problem at Level 2 chicago, where NKY traffic goes. I have been telling them that for months ( there is a line trace test here) and ye, they will not fix it. Are not going to. why??

Treat your CUSTOMERS with respect, and update your infrastructure. It is old, over loaded, and thats why we wont get the HD total.

The good news is, if you are lucky enought to have it work, it is very very good.

Pre-Sales information with customer service was great, they were very polite and knowlegeable, could have confused them for American Express...lol The only knock on pre-sales was the website which showed no service availability.

Install Co-ordination was great, time from call to installation was 2 days and on a Saturday even. The installer even called and was early too.

Connection reliability is just wonderful, no broadband downtime which is very important to me.

Tech Support, just called them for a few general questions about home networking, once again very polite and knowlegeable. I gave them a 3 or neutral rating because I have not had any serious broadband issues.

Mail & News, Email has always been available for me.

Value for the money, It could always be better lol, but very satisfied with the price, service, and money well worth it.

In closing, I have been a text book example of a satisfied customer with @home on 09/01 then the transition to Insightbb/ATT backbone.
I would like to thank every person at InsightBB for their dedication to serving the customer!

PS Hey Paul Allen, this company is a keeper

Once the new higher 384K up-load tier started, I experienced slow downs on my download speeds from 3000 to 2500, now only the last week has the download speed been back to 3000, hopefully to stay. Happy Holidays!

    Up-date 10-01-2008
Since my last review monthly cost has gone up from $35 to $45 per month.
InsightBB has increased download and upload speeds.
    This is from the insightbb speed test website;

Since the switch from @Home to Insight, I have had no major problems. The download speed (3000) is great but the upload (128) needs to be improved. However, Insight has made comments that tiered service may become available in the future as one option to customers who want a higher upload speed. I currently rent my modem from Insight for $10 per month and receive a $10 per month credit on by cable bill, so there is no out of pocket cost. All in all, I would recommend Insight to others.

Update: Insight just started tiered service..for $35 dollars more per month ($80 total), you can get an upload speed of 384. Price may seem a little high to some, but I think it's okay...I upgraded and am very pleased with it.

Update: Do to the latest viruses/worms circulating on the internet, Insight has blocked ICMP's. However, I have read where they have sent letters to the customers who computers are infected and told them they have one week to fix it or their service will be disconnected. I will update when/if there is a change. As far as the overall service, Insight still rates high with me.

Since April 1, 2004 my speed has dropped from a consistent 3000 to 2750. Supposedly, Insight is experimenting with new tiers in Kentucky, but no official word on that to date. With all the recent upgrades by other providers, Insight had better do something soon or I will be looking for a change. Other than the problem with my "speed", Insight still rates high with me.

Insight just increased the standard tier to 4000/384 and the "Plus" tier to 6000/512. The "Plus" tier is still an extra $35 per month...not sure it's worth the difference, but I still have it. As stated above, my connection has always been solid as a rock and, with the speed increase, Insight is once again on the right path to being one of the top cable providers.

There have been no changes to what Insight offers or my personal experiences since my last review. Perhaps we'll see another speed increase before the next review.

Update - Nothing new regarding price or speed increases. Hopefully, there will be more news before the next update.

Update Sept 2006 - Currently nothing new regarding price or speed increases. However, there is an unofficial rumor that there will be a speed increase this fall...we shall see.

Update Nov 2006 - Insight is currently implementing the speed upgrade. The standard tier will be 10000/1000 and the "Plus" tier will be 15000/1500.

Comcast took over Insight's service in my area.

service is up about 99.9% of the time
their lowest package is 10M/1M for $30/month if you have cable also, $39.95/month without, can upgrade to 20M/1.5M for an additional $10
"dynamic" IPs (mine has been the same for quite some time)

I don't know about other Insight areas, but the Evansville people are on top of everything, you have a problem and they're there within 24Hrs, I've had 7 different addresses in Evansville, all different nodes, and never had a problem in the 7 years I've had them.

I did spend some time on AT&Ts DSL 6.0/768, it worked most of the time, but I was paying $55/month ($35 for DSL, $18 for a phone line I never used, and the rest in taxes/fees), so in short, Insight is faster & cheaper.

If you're thinking about WOW! Cable HSI in the Evansville area, don't do it, they're fastest download speed it 6Mbits,although I hear they are adding tiers, they charge more than Insight and they have a lot of problems (so I hear). I also want to add that this is my opinion.

Update 8/7/08 - 20MB down with 1.5MB up. Reasonable price for the bandwidth, although it would be nice if they offered a tiered service plan, like 5MB/512K for half the price of the normal speed. Download speeds are a bit inconsistent; tests with speedtest.net show rates from 14MB up to 30MB no matter the time of day. However, upload speeds are consistent at 1.5MB. As the only other alternative for high-bandwidth broadband is WOW, Insight is *much* cheaper and has better customer service.

To jmelcher on the Insight review

    "A bit pricey"

    I don't understand how 10MB/1MB is "pricey" for $30?
Try 384Kb/128Kb ("dial-up buster") for $ 27 and then let us know if you think $ 30/month is expensive for Insight's speed.

Don't care for the tone of your sarcasm but, nonetheless, I'm unsure at this point why I stated it was pricey. I've edited my review to remove that statement. Hope that makes you happy now. If there's anything else I can do for you, please let me know.

I am reviewing Insight, but I have been using the cable internet connection here since it was @home beta. Thus I cannot accurately comment on how pre-sales information, Install coordination and I have not had to use any tech support.

Originally, with Insight, the service as 4mbit/384kbit. Insight rolled out their 10mbit/1mbit and things were shaky at first. After some research, I determined that the modem I was using (an old RCA) was not compatible with the upgrade. I took it down to the local Insight Office and they replaced it completely free with a new webstar modem. I had bought the original Cable Modem when the company was "InterMedia" and they had no problem replacing it. Once I had the webstar up and running I was cruising along at 10mbit nearly all the time.

Insight obviously has some restrictions on users who utilize excessive bandwidth. See the Inside Insight forums for more detail. I am not one of these users. I have noticed that they seem to be making an effort to hinder peer to peer technologies, and my torrents often seem to drop outgoing connections. Over all this does not concern me, and I believe that the network is more stable because of this.

What does concern me is that Insight obviously has not spent much time or thought into their metrics and routing. From my limited sources of information, I have gathered that the way you are routed is entirely dependent upon your geographic location. For example, I am always routed through Atlanta, GA. Atlanta is a linear distance of approximately 600km from where I live. Chicago, IL is approximately 400km in linear distance from my location. I play a lot of online games where ping has a sizable impact on deciding the winners and losers of matches. Part of Insights service area (the area blatantly next door to Chicago, IL) is indeed routed to Chicago. I have even seen a post of someone in IL being routed to Kansas City, MO.

All in all, I think Insight should have set it up so users are intelligently routed the most efficient way to the final destination. Chicago is a huge infrastructure hub and is where most servers are hosted for the games I do play. Even in server in Atlanta, where pings are obviously the most optimal for me, I still ping higher than many others that live further away. Having to go all the way down to Atlanta and back adds a lot of unnecessary latency.

Bottom line is, if you're overly concerned about your latency and you live in my area I recommend zoomtown/fuse. They have multiple direct routes with lower latency to Chicago and peer at much closer locations to their service area which give you much better pings. A friend on fuse pings lower than me to Atlanta, Chicago and anywhere else. If you need the bandwidth, on the other hand, look no further. Insights 10mbit service really does mean 10mbit for me -- even at peak times where latency skips up 4-8ms, the bandwidth is solid.

I will attempt to keep this post updated with further info on routing changes and speed issues. Don't hesitate to ask me questions in private message or email, or post in the Inside Insight forums since I frequent them.

    [ Interesting point #1 ]

Often, routing changes. Insight has sprintlink and level3 bandwidth available at Atlanta. At the start, routes were quite balanced between the two. Over time, changes occurred on strange intervals. Routes would change from using a balance of sprintlink and level3 bandwidth to using almost entirely level3 bandwidth. In my experience, the latency using routes on sprintlinks network was superior and thus preferred by myself. Changes in routing changed between level3/sprintlink to a majority of servers over the course of time since the 10mbit/1mbit change. Now, it is rare to find any routes that use sprintlink. I can only wonder if, once again, it will eventually revert back to using a combination of sprintlink and level3. Routes from servers back to me commonly use sprintlink rather than level3 -- a good indicator that those servers have a much smarter routing configuration than what seems to be in place now at Insight.

    [ Update on 07/22/07 ]

There was a very short (few hours) outage that occurred between Level3 and InsightBB for Atlanta-bound traffic a few weeks ago. There has been no change in routing, all traffic still goes south to Atlanta. Service has been reliable and stable with nothing to complain about. The experience with InsightBB has been amazing and if you live in the NKY area and desire speed, look no further.

    [ Update on 09/18/07 ]

No real problems with service. It seems that sprintlink inbound routes have been disabled. Normal users won't notice a change, but it has a pretty negative affect on any Usenet providers that resell UseNetServer services. Insight provided Usenet access (through Giganews) is amazingly reliable and consistent. Insight customers are lucky to have it.

    [ Update on 10/31/07 ]

Continued good service. Two nights ago I was having trouble accessing my email and many websites. Running some tests I saw that the routing was changing almost every 10 minutes. For a bief period of about 60 minutes everything was perfectly optimal, including direct routes to both Atlanta and Chicago. Routes were intelligently taking logical paths (Dallas servers would route through Atlanta, Seattle through Chicago, etc) but when I woke up the next morning all traffic was forced through Atlanta again. Sprintlink inbound is still nonexistent, routes only take sprintlink outbound. There are rumors of another speed upgrade for InsightBB customers. Numbers being thrown around by someone for the Evansville market were 20mbps download speeds. Will update if anything changes. I have changed my rating for Services to a 4 since provided Usenet access is reliable and very consistent. Tech support moves to a 4 also as I was contacted about issues happening with the connection late in the night.

    [ Update on 11/07/07 ]

Almost all routing is using Chicago (Level3) now. There are a few routes that are still taking inbound Atlanta (Level3) but nearly everything outbound goes through Chicago (Level3). Some outbound routes still take Atlanta (sprintlink) and Atlanta (sprintlink) inbound continues to not exist. Perhaps they truly are phasing out the Atlanta bandwidth they have (had?). As the changes are made the service sometimes degrades but it's worth it to me -- great ingame ping to a majority of the servers in the games I play. InsightBB started taking over DNS not found pages (or whatever they are called). If you go to a non-existent domain/url it forward you to a page with advertising on it. I am using Level3 DNS servers as I think this is a poor practice and dislike it.

    [ Update on 12/29/07 ]

Things have taken a turn for the worse. I am getting dialup speeds and contacted InsightBB on friday. They promised that I would receive a call before 6pm on friday. I received no call. Perhaps I was capped (why, I have no idea. I have transferred 32GB in this month of december and that is all) seeing as how it's exactly 7KB/s day or night no matter what protocol. Tried rebooting modem, changing my IP with a release/renew and all kinds of wire configurations. My local network is fine, there is something with InsightBB.

    [ Update on 06/22/08 ]

It's been quite awhile since an update. Quite a bit has changed.

First, the routing now is quite optimal, with a direct route to Chicago being used in most cases where it should be. This satisfies me greatly.

Second, the speeds were top-notch until a little over a month ago. Since then, congestion during peak usage hours has plagued me with low speeds and horribly high latency. Insight claims this issue is "escalated" and should be resolved soon, but I am skeptical. I will try to remember to post here when it is fixed.

    [ Update on 8/1/08 ]

Just wanted to say that InsightBB customer service has treated me well and the connection has been running well since the issue (posted on 06/22/08) was cleared up. Few minor hiccups, but over all it's been everything I want. I'm bumping up my ratings due to the continued service and their will to fix it. Also because they have continued to offer free access to Giganews.

I've been an Insight subscriber in Lexington KY and now Louisville KY... their service has been awesome. Shortly after installation I had an internet problem... I called tech support and they sent a tech to my house in 30 minutes... at 7pm (who would think that the cable company could send someone out on the spot!). The problem was identified and a temporary new line was run to my home that night. (a permanent line buried in about 3 days) Insight consistently far exceeds my expectations in internet access, cable tv, and especially customer service.

    My Other Reviews·Community Wireless
2 - 3 outages in 3 years and a constant 2+ Mbps practically 24/7. Tech support is more than adequate and in the rare instances where service goes down, it is back up within a 12 hour period maximum. I'm extremely pleased with Insight and am unaffiliated with them. I have worked for 2 different national ISPs, 1 startup DSL company and Charter Communications. My experience with Insight has been nothing but good (in my area).

    Thursday, 24 April 08, 03:11 Eastern UPDATE:

OK, I'm back to give the current state of my experience with Insight:

Here are some suggestions BBR has recommended I mention:

    • What other options did you consider for broadband:
Community Wireless, however, the speed would have been more than halved and over 2 times the price (in their favor, however, I do realize start-up costs and maturing a new technology in a "rural" area is challenging and I do admire their efforts).

    • What SPEED/package did you order, at what monthly price?
Originally ordered/expected 1 Mbps down / 365 kbps up, got it - consistently. Currently getting 10x that for no additional charge. This is really something to behold -- supplier taking care of the consumer. I have nothing but good to say of this company.

    • What good or bad experiences most struck you? Being in the IT industry, I sometimes forget to check the simple things. I had what I thought to be a signal issue about 2 - 3 months ago...it was my simple mistake. I'd bought a new router and new modem and mis-configured it. Insight rolled a truck out, the tech arrived on time, I found my silly mistake, apologized, the tech didn't complain a bit, and the service, as usual, back to rock-solid.

The only concern I have at this point, is how long can Insight continue to offer this world-class service without degrading like so many other technology manufacturers / suppliers? Can they keep providing this level of service forever? Well, they have done it for 7 years so far.
