Went from a big slow grey dish (Direcway), to a little grey dish (Coastinet). Size is not everything . Sales, support, install went very smooth. Really good people to do biz with. For $40mo/$99install I got the 3000/384 service. And "Surprise" it's all of that and then some, wow! 3100down/1500+up

Add to the plus list, static ip, unlimited bandwidth(no downloads caps), and more mailboxes than I need.
This is GOOD!

I had ordered service from another local provider over a month previously and had not recieved an install date (I was one of the 1st 5 to order) another dslreports member informed me about Coastinet and I called them about 3:00 in the afternoon, they did the install the next afternoon and was up by 6:00 or so. I ordered 768/384 for 49.95 per month the 199.00 install fee was waived if the 1st year was paid in advance which I did. At the beginning was lucky to get in the 600k range and the service was usually down for brief periods during the week for the first month or so but a quick call to tech support took care of the problem usually while I was on the phone. I have had no problem with the service since that first month and I have been with them since Feb or March. My speeds now range from 700k to 1100k usually in the upper end of that. Orinoco Equipment was installed. Here is the link for service plans. »www.coastinet.com/servic ··· lans.htm

Update: After switching to Comcast and then DSLextreme for a while I recently switched back to Coastinet. When I called them to reconnect they were pleased that I decided to come back. They set the appointment for the same day and put in what they refered to as 3rd generation equipment which included an antenae on the roof, new Cat5 cable and a small box about the size of a phone jack in the house. Everything was completed the same day. With DSL I was recieving about 1100-1200 down and 128 up both have increased tremendously. I am now recieving at around 2K down and about the same up (peak numbers) on a static IP. Anytime I call I get someone on the phone, no messages or recordings (normal business hours) Install was great, on time and very professionally done. So far I have had no down time.

Yeah, it's a good service

I have both area WISPs and now the 2nd T-1 has helped Coastinet connectivity. Recently I have has more outtages with Coastinet's competitor that Coastinet. Since I'm not a huge downloader, the low caps don't bother me, otherwise the $50/mo for 768/384 service is typical (e.g. VerizonDSL ex GTE) for the area. When a few months ago I would have said avoid them like the plague...I would now say the exact opposite. I get reliable speeds, good consistent latency and in the very rare circumstance that I have a problem I get responsive service.

Re: Yeah, it's a good service...At least it WAS

Well...what a difference a month makes. Now I can't get over 200kbps from Coastinet and IM and emails to tech support go unanswered. What a nightmare. They did this crap back in Feb and Mar...jerking me around...now it looks like after 2 months of good service that they're back to their old BS act...blaming their competitor for their capacity problems.

299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

They sure do limit your bandwidth though, you have to go to a $299 a month plan to have unlimited use.

Re: 299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

the day any broadband company that im with, and if they limit how much i can d/l and u/l ill be immediatley leaving. heres an example on in the past 15 days ive d/l 12.5 gigs and uploaded 47.3 gigs totaling 60 gigs of up and down badnwidth in the past 15 days. hmmm i would die if they limited me.
they can cap the speeds all they want, (theres always ways to get around that). but limit the amount. im sorry but ill be leaving.

Re: 299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

It's easy to say if you have a choice. What you would leave for? Dial up? There is no DSL or cable service in this area. WISP is the only source of BB here. And other problem is, a lot of WISP's are startups by guys like you and me...usually using a T-1 or a bonded T-1 so they can't just let the 20 customers they have run wide open. The affects of 1 or 2 so-called web hogs can HOSE performance, especially if you aren't capping and offering 1.5Mb or 768 max for customers. The affects of a DL hog is much more than if you have 20 hogs capped at 1.5Mb running from a DS3 like a mid size provider might use.

Re: 299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

That seems odd to me, what with SO CAL being so populated. I was born and raised in So Cal(West Covina), and here I am now in Redwood Valley(I miss SO CAL dearly!), a tiny, unincorporated community in Mendocino County up in Northern California(a very rural and poor county by the way, dominated by Vineyards, Pine, Coast, Oaks, Mountains, Forestry, Redwoods, and Tourism) and I have Unlimited, 3-4 mbps down, 123 kbps up Adelphia Cable Modem service for 44.95 a month. No DSL though, the CO here doesn't have a DSLAM yet, though Ukiah does, Project Pronto kinda died here. Thankfully, Adelphia came in and spent literally tens of millions of dollars upgrading the whole county to Fiber, enabling Digital Cable and Cable Modems.

Re: 299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

We are a recently new development between Lake Elsinore and South Corona...about 64000ft from the nearest CO. However, ATTBi is VERY close to turning up service for us. Hopeful that will bring competition. But in the meantime, Coastinet does offer excellent service the ONLY drawback being so far as I can see is the low download cap. But between the choice of a 768/384 (that occasionally reaches 1100kbps) with a 2 or 3 GB download cap and dialup...the choice...for me at least is obvious.

Not everyone can be blessed with OOL or WinFirst. Some of us take what we can get...and are happy to at least have that.

Re: 299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

Yeah, I agree with you there. Coastinet has some great deals, especially if you can't get any other type of broadband. Here's a link to our local wireless outfit, »www.ukiahwireless.com/ run by Pacific Internet. Check it out, it's nowhere near as good a deal as Coastinet. On top of that, they don't even install the equipment, "you'll need about $450-700 worth of equipment plus you'll need to do some install work (or pay someone else to do it)". It's weird too, because they serve an area that has both DSL and Cable Modems, and are not competitive with either. Their reach is very limited too due to the hilly and tree filled terrain here. I think there is some room for serious competition here, what do you think?

Re: 299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

A lot of times WISP providers are looking to service businesses that are out of the range of the CO and aren't serviced by cable providers. My office is one of those. I'm surrounded by excellent TW service but our business district wasn't trenched for cable. I was just lucky to be able to pull some strings to get VerizonDSL at 19,200ft but with 608/192 service. Beats dialup but some would say $50 for 608 service is a rip...sure...if there was a choice. I also subscribe to Coastinet's competitor which offers 1500/1500 service but their performance is erratic at times (a recent development). Until just recently I had their top plan ($70/mo) but I'm no longer getting consistent 1000/1000+ speeds so I dropped to the $25/mo plan. I still can get 1500/1500 with static IP but if other people are on...they get priority over me. No biggy, especially for $25...heck that only $15 more than dialup...and they don't cap...just BW throttle if other people are on. If no one else is on (to the point there is a lot of traffic) it's like there's no cap.

In terrain like you speak of...wireless that doesn't rely on LOS is gonna be the key unless you have a property that can tolerate the appearance of a 50ft tower.

Re: 299 for unlimited bandwidth, ouch!

What kind of wireless doesn't rely on los? I am getting more and more interested in all of this, heck, maybe I'll even start up my own WISP. I don't think the trees would be a big problem, as I can get full cell service here through all the big Oaks, probably because I am in line of sight to several cell towers. Also, the trees could be excellent to hide an antenna. I do see houses around here with some pretty tall radio antennas(I assume they are into Ham or something), so maybe people wouldn't mind much. It's certainly something to think about

It's called NLOS, non-Line of Sight...here's a few DSLR articles about different technologies.

I recently moved to Lake Elsinore, CA and was in need of an ISP. I was planning on getting cable TV through comcast along with internet. They were unable to connect my house. It is brand new an apparently they would not be ready for several months. I opted to get DirectTV for TV but their internet speeds are a joke. Next, I called Verizon for DSL was which was good because my home phone was though them but not hooked up yet. Again I have a new home their can't even connect my phone for two and a half weeks. I can live without TV and phone but not without Internet. I need broadband, no dial-up stuff. So I opened the phone book and called a company that I thought was an ISP. They were not but they had a referral. Coastinet.

They have plans for $30, $40 and $50. I picked the $40. Installation was $100, which I wasn't thrilled about at the time. Not only did they come out the same day he did all the wiring as i asked. The unit is barley exposed on the corner of my house hardly noticable. They ran the cable though my attic right to my wall mounted wireless Linksys router. The entire install was clean and professional. I got my money's worth on the Install. I highly recommend Coastinet to anyone in the Lake Elsinore area.

For the $40 a month I got a static IP included, 1800K/384K connection, and unlimited bandwidth. E-mail account also come with it but i didn't need them.

Stable latency, good enough for gaming, downloads minimally 10X than dialup.
Erratic speed typical of WISP...busy during evening hours...great during the day
Advertised speeds most of the time, really busy during prime time only

I've had both Coastinet and their competitor (concurrently running through a Nexland Pro800Turbo dual WAN router) since about February and after a few months of growing pains which killed Coastinet's performance...they've come out of it. Now the service is very stable and outtages are infrequent. Latency is pretty good and stable too. The install was a bit messy (thus the "3" rating) but nothing a vacuum couldn't take care of (just an annoyance considering the high install fee). My main issue is the low download caps but this has the benefit of keeping the speeds up as the so-called web hogs go to other providers. Currently there is no DSL or Cable modem service available so our choices are very limited. Sure if WinFirst or OOL rolled into town I'd switch...but they aren't. I'm about 3 miles or so from the tower and use a small parabolic dish (which is permitted by the HOA). When first installed I experienced some packet loss but now that is not the case. The 768/384 plan but during peak hours I'll get 300-400kbps and during off peak hours I'll get as much as 900kbps. Uploads are pretty consistant 200kbps. Their site says DHCP but I haven't had an IP change since installation. Their mail server seems reliable and they have webmail available but I don't use it. No news server is included with the service.

Overall Coastinet is a good service to anyone who want to make that occasional DEMO download but wants the convenience of an always on speedy connection with latency similar to DSL and cable. It would be a great service for businesses not serviced by the local cable operator.

Equipment is an ORiNOCO AP with external roof mounted antenna.
