I had been with SBC DSL for over 12 months until I moved house. At my new house cable internet was now available, I almost went with AT&T until a guy from Astound visited our home. With Astound the price of the modem lease was included and we got a discount for multiple service purchase (ex. Cable TV + Internet).

$35.95 a month is a good price I think. I'm especially happy because for the first two months I get 3Mbit cable for free and then revert to the normal 1.5Mbit. My service has yet to go down at all and my tested speed is 2.7Mbit downstream at peak hours. I couldn't be happier with it.

The only think bad about Astound is that it is hard to find out if it is available online. You have to call them up for them to be able to give you a definate answer. Pretty annoying but I would say it is worth it.

Don't buy any of the IP addresses they say you need for home networking, you don't need them! I had my connection networked via a wireless router in no time with no need for any extra IP addresses.

My suggestion is get Astound if you can as I think it is great value for money. Only problem is I think it is only available in 3 cities in the country.

After having been with TELOCITY / DIRECTDSL, and dealing with their nightmare start up, and initially slow up and download times; I was really worried about going with a brand new company... Especially since I use my conection for home and business.

After some research, a lot of phone calls and talking with a number of sales reps and techs, I went with Cable, ASTOUND BROADBAND (California)

Order to startup was 3 days. Stated speeds were 1500/240. Clocked speeds at 1500-1600 down and 230-240 up.

The INSTALL and DATA guys were fantastic!!! Clean install, cleaned up there mess, very knowlegable, and fast. They installed a cable modem and had all of the supplies needed. The OUTSIDE cable line drop install was about an hour and a half. The inside modem hook up was about 15 min. The Data Tech checked over my entire computer to make sure that all the drives, printers and scanners worked. A great added feature.

No contract, two months free, free installation and set up, 39.95 a month.

I will update this review as time goes on.

UPDATE: So far its been one month. Zero problems and GREAT consistant speed. Ran a couple of serious and dumb questions by tech. support and they were very friendly, knowledgable, and patient.

A few errors when I done load email through OUTLOOK XP. I am not always able to done load from all astound email accounts. Will have to check with tech support and update review.

After dealing with PacBell, Northpoint, and Ricochet for previous broadband connections, I don't think I could ever switch to another ISP. Astound has been great and I'd recommend them to anyone in their service area. The speeds are faster than DSL (I get 1450 down / 245 up on avg) and I've yet to see any slow-down during peek usage hours. My only gripe is that they lack any sort of online control panel for email settings and account password etc.

    Very poor technical support

I called the customer support with a simple question about SMTP settings; their Web page was outdated, and I was using an SMTP relay personality in Eudora set for the old RCN settings.

The customer support staff told me I would have to contact "the company you registered your email address with to solve this."

I politely explained that domain name registration didn't have anything to do with SMTP. Got into one of those funny loops where the customer service guy kept saying:

CS: "What is your email address?"
    ME: blah blah at blah.com
CS: That is a third party email address, we don't support those.
ME: I'm just trying to find out why my outgoing mail settings, which used to work, have stopped - they were the old RCN settings and I think you have finally changed them. Should I use the Astound settings, and do I need a new account name with astound email address for the relay personality?
CS: No, you have to contact the company where you registered your domain.
    ME: No, really, I don't.
    CS: Yes, you do.

Etc. Irritating, but funny at the same time.

Very poor service, unable to answer basic questions, obviously mainly a provider of home services to people who are using web mail.

Finally got Astound installed last week -- boy am I glad I don't have to deal with PacBell any longer. Their customer service team is staffed with friendly, knowledgable, no-nonsense individuals. What few issues I've had were completely resolved with one phone call, talking with one person.

Some downsides -- their email and personal webspace accounts need to be managed by their Customer Service Reps. You can't administer your own accounts through a web site.

All in all, a rock solid connection at the promised speeds. I'm a very happy customer so far.
