I decided to switch ISP’s because my Verizon DSL connection was unstable and had packet loss. I like to game and this made gaming a frustrating experience except during non-peak hours such as after 2 am when the connection would settle down. Even though the whole neighborhood was having the same issues I was, calling Verizon left me stuck with low level tech support personnel on the west coast who transferred me to east coast techs who still had no information about the problems in the area. With Verizon I was also stuck in a 12 month contract.

I have not had any of these problems with New York Connect. One reason I decided to go with NYCT is because they offer a month to month contract so I can cancel whenever I need to. I called on a Monday and two techs came to my house and installed cable internet (I don't have cable TV) that Friday!

So far the service has been great and dealing with a smaller company has been a pleasure. The speeds have been steady at the advertised 5.0M/384K. I miss the upload speed of DSL 768 but the main thing is I no longer have packet loss and now have a steady low ping for gaming. The fast download speed is a bonus. Another possible bonus is that with DSL I believe (could be changing now?) I am required to have a landline phone line to get internet service. Now that I have NYCT cable internet I am considering canceling my landline telephone service and just using my cell phone. This could save me money. Overall I am very satisfied so far.

"MUCH FASTER THAN ROADRUNNER and NO DOWNTIME like RR!!!"
"NYCT's CS Sucks cuz its really small. . . . ."

I get 2.91 Mbps all the time on this bad boy. Its basically still on Time Warner City Cable BUT doesnt get any downtime like Roadrunner. I was with Roadrunner for 6 months and then @ the 6th month i had 6 down times and one time for 3 days straight.

If you check Roadrunner's help page and look up network status in QUEENS, youll see theyre always doing MAINTANANCE and ruining the down speeds.

With this one, i have yet to have any down time. BUT There are TWO bad things which are bad CS, and WORST Newsgroup retention i have ever seen. You will need to get a third party Newsgroup Server if youre into that stuff. And their CS cant do much since its a very small company. Theyre also very cheap in terms of setup. For me to setup a POP3 mail, i had to email them the requested name and password. Meaning someone is seeing my current PW. How can i trust them.

If you just want to be part of the few, the fast, and the best in NYC, then join NYCT!!!

I am very happy with NYCT, a really solid ISP that knows its business, aside from having technical support who can really do SUPPORT.

Verizon is history for me -- I'm giving it a few days just to make sure I haven't forgotten to inform anyone important about my new e-mail address.

NYCT got my Internet connection up and running as promised; came to install the service when they said they would -- all within 4 hours after signing up! And this happened on a Saturday!

It's clear I made the right ISP vendor selection.

    Michael

Recently, I switched from RoadRunner to NYCT over the Time-Warner cable network. A few months back I noticed Earthlink, AOL, and NYCT were available to provide Internet connectivity over my TW cable. Initially I was hesitant to switch providers as the RR service itself was satisfactory. Then I had a problem with my cable modem (hardware issue, wouldn't synch) and had the displeasure of talking to a variety of people in both TW and RR tech-support. Worse than useless would be a good summary of those conversations.

Anyway, I decided to give NYCT a chance as they are a regional provider and had very good reviews. I sent an email asking how to coordinate the switch from RR to their service. Within an hour, I received a phone call from someone at NYCT saying they'd take care of it and I should expect a call from provisioning in the next couple of days. This was on a Friday afternoon so I figured early next week. That evening, I received a call letting me know my service was transferred. I refreshed my DHCP lease and that was all. Simple.

I consistently get the 2000/384 connection I was promised. DNS query time is very good. I don't use their mail service but they appear to have a nice Webmail system in addition to POP3. This is a dynamic IP, but I've had the same IP for weeks now. As far as I can tell, no ports are blocked or throttled.

While NYCT does not offer 24/7 technical support, I just sent an email to their support address with a question and received two answers within 5 minutes. Mind you, this is not during their normal business hours. Fortunately, I've never had any serious issues but I get the impresison these guys are very competent.

The bottom line is that New York Connect is the best ISP I've ever had. If you have Time Warner cable, consider them. They do DSL and dialup as well.

"a good alternative to RoadRunner."
"no tech support on weekends or at night."
"a decent alternative to TWC"

Value for money:

I found this company while still using a dialup connection. My first 6 months on line I went through 5 ISP's, all national companies and was extremely unsatisfied. I happened upon nyct.net by accident and decided to give them a try mainly for change and a desire for a local provider. I stayed with them until the advent of broadband in my area and reluctantly I left them for Verizon DSL (the worst experience I have ever had including AOL) About a year ago they started offering cable broadband service in New York and I switched back to them immediately. They are competitively priced and I have never once had any problem with them. Any sort of technical glitch is handled immediately. When calling their tech support a person hired by them answers the phone in New York, not India or the Phillipines and they fix the problem either immediately or they say "give me your phone number and I'll call you right back" and they do. The only flaw is there's no one there on the weekends or at night. If you are looking for direct access to the internet with fast speeds than you should consider this company. It's a no frills operation, they don't have a home page filled with a bunch of crap trying to seperate you from your money. No lame attempt at being the next big portal. You turn on your computer and you do your thing, period. Another good point is their newsgroups. Uncensored. RoadRunner is.
