fltg - Finger Lakes Technology Group - is an arm of the Trumansburg Home
Telephone Co and the Ontario Telephone Company.
They offer DSL service here in ultra-rural Seneca County (my zip is
14521); also in parts of Ontario County (Phelps/Clifton Springs).
For an independent phone company, Trumansburg Home Telephone Co is extremely forward looking.
They are deploying SLC boxes throughout their territory, so that even
though I am 5 road miles from the CO, I am about 500 wire feet from the
SLC. I was quite happy when I saw the SLC box going onto a pole almost in
front of the house, since Time-Warner does not bring cable to this part of
town and Roadrunner is not an option.
Installation was EXTREMELY smooth. I was prepared with an SMC router all
set up, and one machine set to use it as the gateway (other machines were
pointing at a machine with a modem and a dialler with NAT capabilities).
The installer told me that one of his secrets of success is to put the
splitter (filter) at the demarcation point where the wires enter the
house, and then run a new pair from the unfiltered line to the computer
room, where it is plugged into the modem.
So when this was done, it worked right off the bat, and has been working
without problems since then.
Very satisfied with the installation and the service.
