I had the Triple Play (Augusta, GA), Cable-Internet-Phone installed in July, now in December, i have had numerous cable issues, picture flashing, loss of sound, loss of picture. Of course service is sent out and normally the fix lasts from days to several weeks. Sometimes an initial problem returns. With that said, I never had this amount and differing issues with Comcast. Knology claims to be customer oriented yet over the last FIVE months problems cannot be resolved, why? I am reconsidering spending the extra $23 per month and returning back to Comcast.

I originally (2007) had the all in one (Phone,Internet, Cable) -premium w/ HD and all major movie channels. Had to cut back to delete ALL the premium movie channels to get it down to $137. At the time I contracted it, it came with the fasted speeds they offered for internet. They have now upgraded to have some more costly premium speeds available and multiple tier options in the bundles. Trying to figure out what options you have (pick and choose) is not possible from the information on the Internet. You MUST call in to get pricing on individual services.
The greatest frustration is the decrease in reliability as they expand. An example is this weekend, all Knology (hosted) domains' Email is down for over 24 hours. Sure does NOT make you want to run right out and sign-up for Electronic Delivery of your financial and investment notifications using a Knology hosted email account.
Since their last major reshuffling of the channels and upgrades, digital dropouts and artifacts in the middle of the TV screen are becoming the norm. Some shows are so broken up that you cannot watch them and it does not matter if it is live or recorded.
When you have an internet speed problem and call in, you get the impression that they are 'throttling' people until they complain. All the resetting, unplugging, and testing I had done before calling, then magically doing it once with them on the line and the problem seems to go away - for a while...
And the classic deception, your Knology IP address to the internet is NOT truly DHCP: it seems that it is reserved unto your address so that advertisers, doubleclick, Google, Intellus, etc., (Police and Homeland Defense) can always find YOU. As a test, I released the Knology internet link from the router, unplugged the router, unplugged the modem, Shutdown all the computers, went on the road, and came back two weeks later to the same IP address. Knology refreshes the connection ever three hours in a growing subdivision, so I guess the assignment is not DYNAMIC.

1 edit | Knology getting worse The service keeps getting worse. Currently it will not upload AT ALL. The service tech took 30 minutes scheduling an appointment for "Monday" between 8-10, then as I was hanging up he said they will be there on Monday and I said then we will see him tomorrow - He then said, Oh he won't be there until Tuesday!!!!! What terrible Customer Service...

$70 per month about 4 days "DOCSIS 3!!!" "To be determined..." "Things are looking better after the upgrade."

UPDATE: Ok, it's been a few years since Knology updated their service in my area and there's really nothing for me to complain about. The service has been rock steady as far as the internet goes. They offer to rent you a cable modem but I bought my own DOCSIS 3 modem as the one they offered was only DOCSIS 2.
Internet speeds are almost always better than the advertised speeds. Very little down time.
TV is meh... They could stand to add a few more HD channels.
Phone is good except for the fact that you have to pay extra for an unlisted number. We got lucky (sarcasm) and got a number that used to belong to someone(s) who never paid their bills so even though we don't give our home number out it rings off the hook. Very aggravating! Oh and you cant block unlisted or 1-800 numbers
The only other complaint I have is that the service for phone, HD cable and Edge Plus internet costs me $165.76 a month which is kind of high and if it gets much higher I will start dropping features.
Other than that the service is great!
OLDER: Knology's service used to be pretty boring. I had a 6Mbps down / 356Kbps Up. The ping times used to be high at times and the speed was intermittent.
They recently upgraded our area to DOCSIS 3 and the speed is way up from what it used to be. The basic packages are now 12Mbps Down / 2Mbps Up. I went ahead and upgraded to the "Edge" and get 25Mbps Down/ 5 Mbps up. I've only had the upgraded service for a few days so I'll update in a few weeks and see if the speeds are still rocking!

| | How?!?!? I've been with Knology for almost a decade now. I have three cable modems connected to a Linksys rv016. (I'm a photographer and need high upload speeds.) I started out with their only available package back in the day of 3m/384k, which upgraded to 6m/384k. Then they introduced the edge, so I got that, which went to 8m/784k. And the latest upgrade should get me 25m/5m.
But they can't get the 25m/5m to work even though I'm paying for it x3! I've been working with them for almost a month and every person seems to give a different reason/thing to try. A technician just left my place and he couldn't even get it to work.
Who did you talk to get these speeds? How painful/painless was it? Which modem did they give you? Arris, Motorola, or Scientific Atlanta?
I'm in Madison too, in the subdivision across from Heritage Elementary on Old Madison Pike. Is this far away from your location?

I have Phone and Internet service, no television. I originally started with 6Mbps service, and was automatically increased to 12Mbps at no additional cost when DOCSIS 3 was activated in my area. Speeds have always been as advertised.
Netflix and Hulu+ work fine over Knology internet. Phone service has never missed a beat.
I've had only one internet outage over the last two years, and it affected the whole neighborhood for a couple of days. After it was fixed, Knology sent a technician door-to-door to check that everyone was back online. (My old DSL service went out every time it rained. The phone company sent plenty of techs to work on it, but they were never able to fix it).
I've called tech support three or four times so I could register new modems. Each time I talked to a knowledgeable tech in the US and had to wait only a few seconds to get through.

I live in Huntsville, AL and I recently switched from AT&T 6Mbps DSL to Knology's DOCSIS 3.0 service. So far I am very impressed. They did an excellent job on installation. They buried the cables out to my house within one week and did not mess up anything else (sprinklers, phone line, etc.) in the process. I use a HDHomerun in combination with Windows 7 MCE for my DVR service, and I get all the local channels in HD plus a few others and a variety of digital music channels without a cable card. I purposely did not have Voice installed as I do not care about it, and it just adds FCC/tax fees for something I do not use. However, the current deal is phone/internet/hd cable for $79/month for 12 months. I signed up for it subtract phone.
The excellent is the internet. I bought a Motorola 6120 cable modem and I get reliable 25+ Mbps downloads and ~7Mbps uploads. However, my subdivision just got Knology infrastructure installed so the node may not be loaded yet. As-is, I love it and really could not ask for better. I had Mediacom for a short span and it would disconnect randomly throughout the day. I could not stand that.
The tv is really good on the channels you get. All the channels come in clean and crisp. The HD channel quality looks as good as any Directv HD channels that I have seen. The real issue is the lack of HD channels. Especially the better ones like USAHD. Some would say SYFYHD, but I do not care as much on that one. All the locals come in perfectly.
Honestly, I think they will add the missing HD channels over time, and I would much rather have fast internet than a ton of satellite channels I will not watch anyway. The knology web site needs some serious work. It looks ok, but it is not up-to-date and it is not very helpful. No one wants to have to call customer service or get a call-back to answer simple questions these days. That and more HD channels are the only two areas I can see the need for improvement.
Over the years I have used Directv, DISH, Mediacom and AT&T for tv and/or internet, and Knology is providing the best experience I have had to date out of them all. However, I would rank internet speed as more than twice as important as the tv portion of the service.
04-21-2011 Update -----------------
I increased my tech support rating because I received my first bill and I had not received free installation like I was promised. Also, I was charged for modem rental even though I bought my own modem. The lady I spoke to took care of both issues immediately (assumed until I get my next bill), and I did not have to wait on hold to talk to someone.

Third time seems to be the charm. I am keeping my fingers crossed, but so far it's been great. The Docsis 3 upgrades appear to have fixed the internet issues. My speeds are great and fairly consistent, average about 25 down and 6 up with the Edge package.
It took a week to get my cableCARD in my Tivo working properly, and it still shows as unactivated, BUT I'm getting all the channels I'm supposed to. Don't understand that at all. And no one I spoke to on the phone seemed to understand what the problem was/is, but bottom line is, it works for now.
I had to call the next day to get someone to actually turn on all the phone features I'm supposed to be getting, but they seem to be working fine as well.
So, bottom line again, it takes some working with them and patience to get everything installed, but after two weeks, overall things have been good. Based on past expedience I'm waiting on the other shoe to drop, LOL, but so far I'm pleased.
****************************************************************************************
A year later, I moved, and decided to give them a try on the beach side. Got The Edge service, first week was good. By the second week, however, around 5-6 pm every day, speeds drop drastically. The speeds drop to 3 mb/s and below. Night before last, around 9 pm, I was barely above 1 mb/s. Once again, I am most likely going back to Comcast.
On the positive/negative side, after my install, the tech left me with signal levels of -11.8 on the down, and over 58 on the up. After posting on the knology board here, a very nice tech contacted me via email, and offered to come fix these issues. At a day agreed upon, he and a fellow Knology employee spent several hours in the rain fixing that issue. They were very helpful, and very professional.
But bottom line is, until they can get their system fixed, I still cannot recommend them.
=========================================================
The price sounds good, and if the connection were reliable it might be worth it. However, the connection was very unsteady. And, the price they advertise is base price for very basic service. All 'extras' are another $10 each. So by the time you get to the same level of service you had with the other guys, you end up paying MORE for a slower connection, fewer channels, and bad video. My 6 mb connection varied at all hours of the day from 512-ish speeds up, cable channels were pixelated and would occasionally drop. Their support staff was nice, but ultimately useless. When I called to cancel, the lady made snipey remarks about the other company, and that was not at all professional.

| | Knology's very slow internet speeds... I have been experiencing extremely slow internet speeds, .57 on dow loads and about the same or a little less for uploads...
I want to find out why but can get no information from the people here in Huntsville. I'm a residential customer but would like to explore the possibility of a business account maybe, maybe not... I need information to know. But can't get any information on rates for either business or residential.
I'd be interested in the edge upgrade but can not get any pricing on it... I'm baffled how these people stay in business... (other than their business model is based on "monopoly"). Why before you can talk to someone you have to declare yourself to be residential or business. Don't they realize that some people carry out business in there homes?

Knology in Huntsville has recently upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 and it's GREAT. Downloads are blazing fast. I have no complaints about that.
One thing I wanna touch on is that my uploads from testing on SPEEDTEST.NET and KNOLOGY.NET have all capped @ 1.8Mbits/s
Called customer service twice, they said nothing is wrong with my modem or lines and I believe them.
Just curious if anyone else in the 35816 area has any upload issues?
***UPDATE*** Don't know what if anything they did, but my UPload is now much better. 550KB/s typically.
Comments:
| | up load the 1.8 up load speed is better than the 550kbs, the 1.8 would be 1800kbs/persec.. your probably on a profile that gives you 15 down and 2 up both of wicth are good.. there would only be a broblem there if you were on a profile that is suposed to give you 25/4, but the 1.8 is what you would get if you were on a standard profile | |
| | | | Re: up load Wrong - 1mb (mega bit) = 128 KB (kilo BYTE). 1 bit = 0.125 byte So, 1.8 mb = 230KB, so his 550KB rate is much faster than 1.8mb | |
| | | | | Re: up load Sorry, Steve...but 1 MB = 1024 KB. | |
|
asx join:2009-01-06 Huntsville, AL 1 edit | MB Mb Kb KB et. al. there are 1024Kb in a Mb and there are 8 bits in a Byte so a 2Mb/s (megaBITS) connection should upload/download at 2Mb/s*1024(Kb/s/Mb/s)/8(b/B) = 256KB/s (kiloBYTES)
easy way is to round down the K to M conversion to 1000 and round up the b to B conversion to 10.
If 2Mb/s is advertised then expect about 200KB/s

So we ordered knology because our apartment complex doesn't offer another provider unfortunately. They advertise 6MB download speeds but each test I have done on speedtest.net is less than 1MB. I called tech support and he said "wow...your latency that I see from my end is 3000, we will send someone out in a couple of days because there is obviously a problem." The problem is that the speeds on the speed test websites show fine, however when you try to download anything you might as well go out for dinner cause it will still be downloading regardless of how long you are out. If you try gaming at all, you're gonna quit cause it lags so incredibly bad. So the tech guy comes out and I describe my problem and he says and I quote: "It's weird, there are 3 people I have to see in this complex today who report the same problem." He checks the internet and deems it fine and then says " I will call you when I'm finished with the others today and give you a status update at that time." He of course never calls back and my connection is still absolutely awful. PLEAASE do yourself a favor and go with anyone but knology because they frankly couldn't care less about their customers.

UPDATE: Screaming fast internet now days. We still need the basics like USA-HD, SYFY-HD and SPIKE-HD.
UPDATE: Slow speed issues have been fixed yet again. Hope it last longer this time around. I wish knology would do a better job of staying on top of these things. Now I await the DOCSIS 3 upgrade.
UPDATE: Been a little over a year now and we're right back in the same place with overloaded nodes and CMTS. At peak hours we now get around 1.5Mbps or less from 6pm till after midnight. This has been going on for few months now with only the hope that DOCSIS 3 will fix it. Instead of deploying it and getting ahead of Comcast in this market they just play the waiting game. It's like watching grass grow on a winters day nothing happens. We're stuck in the DOCSIS 1.1 stone age.
UPDATE: After four months of bad internet service they have upgraded the local CMTS to deal with the congestion issues on PCB aka H nodes. Speeds are 8mpbs(edge) all hours of the day now. I still think it's poor that a company takes four months to order and install new hardware in there CMTS!
Been with this company for almost ten years now and never really had any trouble with them until this year. I don't know what they have done to the PCB/PC system but internet has gone downhill and fast. Afternoon and evenings are the worst with speeds averaging only around 1 megabits per second. The only time you get anything close to 8 megabits (edge) is after 2am in the morning. The op manager claims there working on it yet they give no eta as to a fix. They keep scheduling maintenance all over Panama City yet nothing has changed and in some cases has gotten worse. I guess for the time being they'll just keep hiding behind "up to".
The forever never ending bandwidth complaint topic can be found here.

If you need good tv and phone then Knology is for you but there internet product over the last year leaves much to be desired. I'm looking at my options now but with only AT&T and Comcast it's not looking good.
