    This is an exit review for me Im about to go to a naked ADSL2+ connection with internode. I had issues getting adsl in the first place due to a rim being in my way and a 2nd party provider couldn't get it connected, which of course isn't spose to happen. The bigpond account is stable for the most part, not a lot of downtime but i do have to reset my modem every few days as the line connection drops from 1500 anywhere down to 300. $69.95 for 12g/shaped is kinda expensive but on a plan you can get the first 3 to 9 months half price. And as with any telstra plan you have to pay line rental on top. There are much better packages around but telstra can be the way to go to get the hardware in place as they will go the extra mile to get you connected to their isp.

    When my partner first moved to Newman, she signed up with a 12 month contract. It took a couple of weeks before they came out to install it. Installation was done by a tech who did it without a problem. However not too long after it was installed, there were problems with the connection. I am not sure what the cause of the problems but it wasn't a local issue, only with her specific connection. It took a couple of attempts to resolve the issue.

    Fast forward to today, she moved to Perth and so did the service. Speedwise, for the price it was bad. I think she had it at 256/64 for $59.95. I couldn't believe how much Telstra was charging for such slow service but that's what you get when a company has a monopoly on the lines throughout the country. When I arrived, we bumped up the speed to 512/128 for ten bucks more at $69.95. It was slow by my standards coming from the US but better than where it was. This past month in December, Telstra finally decided to open the pipes due to competition from other ADSL 2+ providers and now offers faster speeds with the same prices. Currently, we are using the Liberty 1500/256 for $69.95 with the $10 dollar discount for having multiple Telstra accounts. It's much improved over the original speed. Now my only complaint is the 10 GB limit before they do bandwidth shaping. If they could just remove it or increase it to 50GB or 100GB, then it would be better.

    Rubbish

    Tech Support via Telephone: Unskilled staff reading from scripts to diagnose and correct problems. Rarely an experienced or skilled CSR on the other end of the phone. Very little understanding of the technology to begin with despite in-house training provided, let alone being able to assist with connectivity problems. Average wait time to speak to CSR's (non-peak, non-service outage periods) 26 minutes (data recorded from NSW over period of 2 years).

    On-site Tech Support: very few long-term employees, all mostly contractors now. Most techs have a huge customer load and consequentially minimum time spent on site. Replacing connectors (at the pit) seems to be favourite way of dealing with connection issues (out of 37 service calls in 5 years - 31 of these have been to change connectors...)

    Hardware/Networks: serious issues exist in pockets around the western metropolitan areas of Sydney, and in many remote areas, ranging from router failures to line failures etc. Telstra broadband cable network - only Motorola products. ADSL issues at many exchanges resulting in diminished performance for users. Dial-up is consistently faster than ADSL for some customers (which is very poor indeed considering the age of ADSL vs Dial-up).

    Broadband Client: misreports errors, fairly user friendly new users but inflexible for advanced users.

    ADSL link, Thomson SpeedTouch 530, Router,PPPoA,DHCP,NAT,VPI/VCI,128 up / 1536 down

    Occasional outages, some from local exchange re-configuration or maintenance; some have taken out several states - e.g. Queensland, NSW, and WA.
    Overall, probably a little expensive, but I get a 3GB monthly download allowance.

    Shifted to Telstra Bigpond ADSL after poor experience with iiNet dialup, including many security problems, and *lots* of scans. iiNet did not solve any of my support queries. I hear that iiNet have now lifted their game.

    Telstra's physical service performs well for me, but they are not good at online billing and support queues tend to be long. Most support people are competent, polite, and patient. I do not use their spam or virus filters, preferring to trust my own, although the overall spam rate has dropped noticeably since the installation of new servers and software.

    UPDATE: Dropped Telstra after serious problems with the service. Their diagnosis was that the modem (which had been supplied as part of the contract) was faulty. I suggested that they send me a new modem on a trial basis, and if it worked, I would pay for it. They refused. Moved (back) to iiNet, who are now Australia's 3rd largest ISP, and much improved.

    Hi, my name is Andy, and this is my review.

    I have been using Telstra Bigpond since November of 2001, and since then
    my service has been getting slower, and poorer. My ISP promised a
    100kb/s+ download rate, and I am lucky to see 50kb/s. They only provide
    one email, although they do provide 10MB of webspace to use at your own
    leasure. The support hotline is nearly always busy, and I find that
    there is always something being "upgraded" although, my service status
    does not change one bit. When they installed the service into my home,
    they screwed it up and left me without a telephone for a couple of days,
    but it wasn't chargable due to their mistake. I personally do not
    recommend this service, as it's costing me nearly an arma nd a leg to keep it up! I am on the 512k Down/128k Up/3GB Download limit Plan, but it seems more like 56k Download/56k Upload/1GB Limit.

    I have told many of my friends to go elsewhere, or stay on their dial-up
    until something better turns up, as this service provider is a practical
    joke. They are Australia's biggest telecommuncation's service, and they
    can't even get Broadband right. Telstra also have a bad wrap for their
    Dial-up aswell, so it appears its not just restricted to Broadband.
