We looked at Optus,IPrimus and several others before we accepted a 3month FREE trial with no restrictions from Bigpond. We were expecting the usual Telstra online service and that's what we got,and it's quite good. We're looking at a $79au a month package with 15G download limit, and the install was a breeze. Bigpond supplied own brand phone filters and a Bigpond 2Wire modem at no cost.
Good-----:Stability of service, any difficultues were generated by us (NEW to the caper). Bad------:Far too many errors reports which indicate that their compatibility criteria are in desperate need of an upgrade\overhaul or ??????????? Overall..........:It is a good product, but is probably $15-$20au a month overpriced. cool44hand

Telstra... My old arch nemesis...
Hey I'm Andy, white-hat hacker as my little hobby.
When I purchased telstra bigpond dial-up a few years ago they ripped me off and kept putting more usage on than i actually used. These people usually do this all the time so it's best to have an unlimited bandwidth with them because if you go over it's about 50c a mb.
Enough on crappy old dial-up, I got broadband the year after and have been with telstra since then for many years. Although they lack technical skill their servers are top notch and offer unbeatable speed.
I live in QLD, Gold Coast and telstra actually gave me a satelite for $180 when i first ordered bigpond. That gave me 1500/512 speed, pretty neat eh?
When I moved house it turned out there was telstra cabling in my street and there was also underground fibre-optics. What did telstra do? They hooked me up to the fibre-optics, hooray! now i get 3000/128, but that's only because it's my modem's top speed. I went and borrowed a business modem from work to test the line and you wouldn't believe the results I got. 157/68mbs, yes MB!
This year when Telstra were upgrading their servers and I lost my connection the technical support said it would be a month before anyone could even come look at it. Luckily being a hacker I just re-routed myself back onto the substation, but most people would be stuck with no net for a month.
Telstra good or Bad? Telstra Kick ass and are the fastest ISP in Australia, they might be complete idiots but atleast it doesn't take 2 months to download anything like with optus.
I getting 3000/128 for $69.95 a month, best value ever! Order today ^_^

In October, I cancelled my BP cable as it was becoming too unreliable, not to mention the now infamous 3gig cap they implemented. Anyway in December 2003, they brought out their new unlimited plan for only $69.95, and then reduced it to $59.95 in Feb 2004. You get a 10% discount if you have two or more other services with Telstra.
It took over a month to get a tech to my place. Then, in February, I had dropout problems, supposedly to do with "upgrades" they were doing to the network.
Since then, it has been great, uncapped (10Mbps/128Kps) speeds and NO MORE 3GIG CAP!
By the way, the installation and modem was FREE and I also got 2 months subscription FREE.
Very Happy.
