I've been using Mountain Cable for almost a year now, the install was fast and easy, the first modem I got lasted about 10 months until I got Vonage and then it went on the fritz, was replaced with a Motorolla Surfboard DOCSIS 2.0 compliant modem (nice!). The install fees are a little pricey, Cogeco typically offers free installs with a new sign up. I had the same IP for nearly a year which is handy as I use my connection remotely with a VPN to keep my active directory syncronized, and access my exchange server.

The speeds however are very low, 5Mbit down, which I can only really pull on servers like microsoft, and one of the Sourceforge mirrors, everything else is slow. Upload is TERRIBLE, max push is 35kBytes/s which my roommate and I easily saturate on a regular basis with our browsing alone (lots of streaming media). However the service is extremely stable, and since I've had it, its gone down at most 2 times for no more than 15 minutes. The ftp mirror of a very large collection of open source software is also great. Can't really comment on their email service, as I've never actually tried to use it, the same goes with the web hosting. The port blocking has a tendancy to be annoying, Code Red has been a non-issue for ages, and according to my IDS theres a lot of hits from the MSSQL worm, which probably are more dangerous than code red would be right now...

The unlimited download cap is awesome, but with the slower speeds make it an added feature which can't be used to the fullest extent.

All in all, between their TV service, and the internet service Mountain Cable is pretty good, the only improvement I'd be looking for to their service is an increase to the upload speeds. Other than that, they are a great reliable ISP, I have and will continue to recommend them.

    My Other Reviews·TekSavvy Solutions..
Have had Mountaincable since 2001. Switched temporarily to Bell Sympatico HSI in 2002. Horrible speed, hardware was un-reliable, tech support was rude and quick to send you off. Happily switched back to Mountaincable in 2004. Download speed is very good, upload speed is somewhat lacking though. Tech Support is very helpful and insistent not to let you go until your problems are solved. Billing department is also VERY understanding. Would recommend to anyone in the service area... would even recommend moving into the service area.

The competition, Cogeco, is not even comparable.

We ordered our cable Internet service after trying out a free month of dial-up, and never looked back - we're still faithful users after almost 7 years and 3 different houses. When we got several computers and wanted to network them, we simply got a router and connected them all - Mountain Cable still knows about our router and does not care. When we moved, they moved our service without hassle. When our network card failed, they replaced it. On the rare occasion the network was down, they were already working on it when we called. They've also upgraded our service TWICE without any price increases. While downloading 2 files, my service rated 3170/384 (or around there for the upload). We also now use their Digital Telephone service, which is entirely separate from their internet service and just as reliable. My only complaint is upload speed, but hopefully they'll be upgrading that next.

I had Sympatico for 4 years and even with there "ULTRA", Mountain cable high speed leaves Bell in the dust in every which way. If I only knew this before I feel like i have been cheated with internet for the 4 years on Bell.Tech support with Mountain has been so fast as well, no waiting for hours for someone who doesn't even know what there doing!. I'm sure there is much more I can say about Mountain cable internet but I would probably run out of space. See the difference for yourself make the switch to Mountain cable you won't regret it!

Good overall service but lately its been kind of slow. Tech support is helpful and fast. Internet usually never goes down. No complaints except slow p2p and newserver. If you're planning on using Bit Torrent or newsgroups then this isp is no good.

"filler goes here"
"Their service actually influences where I choose to live."

The only limits were speed. But it was still faster than the alternatives. I've transfered a whole lot in one month and didn't have to pay any extra. I've had about 600-650 kb/sec constantly. ... that's bytes not bits. My upload was pretty fast too. Again there was no limit on how much I could transfer a month.
(As of this review, Mountain's High Speed Internet service is set to 5 Mb/s download.)

If anything, i'd prefer a speed limit over a transfer limit. And the speed limit is pretty high. I'm glad they haven't taken the transfer limit route.

The price is also in canadian dollars. And I had a package: Basic cable + choice TV + internet + extra IP address.

I loved my service with Mountaincable and if I move back to the area, I'd make sure it was in their coverage. No way would I go to Rogers, Cogeco, Bell Highspeed.

Hamilton,ON
$39 per month
"Very very reliable service"
"They don't offer NHL Centre Ice for digital cable"
"Fantastic service, would never switch"

I had Sympatico for one month and when I moved to Mountaincable's area, I wasn't aware of their service and how it was.. So, Sympatico informed I Could keep their service as it was available. Turns out, it wasn't and I was billed for one month of service I never used. After weeks of fighting with them, I finally got my refund and switched to Mountaincable. and I never looked back.

After 4 years of service with them and maybe a combined of 2 hours of downtime in that time(Not including PC issues and planned maintenance outages to which they infiorm everytime and state problems to fix it) I must say this service is fantastic. 5Mbps down for 40/month, you cannot go wrong. Their staff is quite friendly and without the automated features that I hate about bigger corporations. Friendly staff, knowledgeable tech support staff(which I've barely had to call due to their reliablity) . I know a few people on mountaincable who will not move simply due to their reliable service( I could never go to DSL or another Cable ISP)

Simply fantastic service, I cannot say enough good things about them.

    9 Thumbs Up
