I have now upgraded from 20/768k to the DOCSIS 3 based 50M/1.5M in order to try and mitigate the congestion and signal issues which were causing my service to struggle to break 3 or 4Mbit at times.

Since this upgrade I am no longer subject to the throttling that other tiers of service suffer.

Service is ok but desperately short of upstream, a ratio of worse than 33:1 isn't good enough and needs addressing. Other than that I have no real complaints with the new service in mind, though it's dubious having to upgrade to escape a congested network.

Update: Since upgrade I've had some reliability issues, these have progressively gotten worse as time has gone on - I'm now at approximately 10% downtime over a period of 2 months - I have used broadband for over 9 years now and this is the most unreliable service I have ever had, 2nd place being another Virgin Media connection, and 3rd.

This is a 10mb package that is capped during peak time. (advertised as uncapped) Typical speeds have been as low as 0.2mb need I say more?

I've been running with Telewest Blueyonder since they launched (now Virgin Media).

Best experience was getting the installation up and running. Pre-sales staff were
very helpful, and the engineers got the service up and running in a matter of minutes without any fuss. (Cable modem connected to an existing ethernet card,
but now you can also pay for an ethernet card to be installed if you don't want to
do it yourself)

IP address is dynamic.

Upgrading from a slower speed package only took a quick phone call and re-start of the cable modem.

Actual bandwidth available is typically 2mb. Far short of the 20mb claimed.

Update - September 2008:
Downgraded to the 10mb package which would have saved around $7 per month, but they offered a TV, phone and broadband deal for 12 months where the overall cost is around $45 cheaper. This means the 10mb service is effectively around $22 per month as the TV and phone services remain unchanged. List price for 10mb service is around $43 per month.

Since RIchard Bransons empire took over - this service has gone from the best to the worst - there is just no need for traffic shaping, just upgrade your servers - yes this costs money - but do you think the internet is just to check your email's??

Well had a day off last week and decided to download a file from the net - hey presto VM have now introduced new traffic shaping technology!!

So if you take there new 50MB service and download inexcess of their agreed amounts your throttled back a total of 75%
»allyours.virginmedia.com/html/in···fic.html
why pay for a substandard service? why give you that speed and say sorry you've crossed the threshold...!!

I want to go DSL now - found a TitanADSL »www.ispreview.co.uk/review/products/586.html however I have to pay for a BT line installation!!

I have been with Blueyonder (now Virgin Media) since 512mb and steadily been increased in speed up to 20mb.

The 20mb is blazingly fast and in my area I actually do get anything up to 21mb depending on the time of day.

Having said the good stuff. If there is ever a fault on it (rare for me) the technical support is the worst EVER. The call centre in India do nothing but read from a list of what to do even if you have done it 15 times already and then they put you on a waiting list for an engineers visit which can take anything up to 14 days.... and at 25p per minute... its bloody expensive for a distinct lack of anything positive.

Had an issue with the supplied Netgear routers. Had two replacements sent to find it was the cable modem causing the issues. Online support were great but phone support is very poor, the people at the other end don't know what they are talking about (Indian call centre).

TV is great, little slow on the TV guide compared to Sky but more bang for bucks with the On Demand services and movie rentals.

Phone, well its a phone!

Installation was great. Guys that did the install removed their shoes before entering my property every time, even if it was just to get a screw driver. They understood my needs (TV one room, phone another and broadband yet another).

Went for the sweet 16 package but am already thinking of upgrading to 20Mb broadband an possibly boosting the TV package as well.

I have previously used ADSL (Phoneline) connection and was happy enough but my yearning for Superfast speeds brought me to VM. I hear they are even talking about 50 Meg download speed in very near future. I joined Telewest before the VM branding and OK there was a few teething problems which can more or less be explained by the fact that most of the network was being upgraded to allow 20 MEG speeds. I am currently paying £29 per mth for the XL (20 MEG) package. Tech Support are not the best (or so I've heard) but I have never had any problems that clearing Internet Cache, checking modem/router/PC connections or rebooting everything hasn't fixed.

OK so the traffic management can be a pain if you are on the slower speeds but I think it is necessary in some form or other what with more and more people leaving bittorrent clients running 24 hours a day.

I was supplied the Motorola Surfboard SB5101E modem and have no problems getting 20 MEG speed with it. Since upgrading to 20MEG speed from 2MEG my speed has rarely been below 12MEG and is usually around 18 or 19.

I would definitely recommend if you are in a cabled area as looks like you could have 50MEG download speed for around the £29 per mth price just now and you won't get anywhere near that with ADSL (Phoneline connection) for a few millenium
