I'm too far from the CO for DSL (30th West and N-8). No cable available here. Several years ago, I broke down and got IDSL, in spite of its relatively poor performance and high cost. I was paying $75/month for 128k (and would likely pay more for a new account now if I wasn't grandfathered). It beat dialup by quite a bit anyway. Then I found out about avradionet from a friend. Seems a well-kept secret.
I was concerned about interactive response and about the reliability of radio connection, but decided to try it out. Initial cost of $400-ish, no commitment, $35/month for 384k up/down. You can get higher speeds for more money, but 384k seemed enough for me. Allegedly a money back guarantee the first month, but I didn't have occasion to verify that. Static IP. I had my own router/nat/firewall and preferred to keep it that way, so I did, though they would work with me other ways also. At 3 times the performance I'd been getting for half the price, I decided it was worth the experiment. I'd make back the initial cost in under a year and be getting the better performance too.
My concerns were all for naught. Excellent interactive response; yes we do online games. Performance as advertised (verified by DSL reports tools ). I don't think our radio link has ever been down.
He's clearly a small business. Call up and you usually get Mark (the owner) instead of some poorly paid help desk person. I prefer dealing with a small local business if they have what I need. Avradionet does. If you are in range of their radio, I'd recommend them..particularly if you are out of DSL range like I am. But any more, I wouldn't switch to DSL if it became available. Satisfied customer.

Our home is located at the west end of the Antelope Valley (170th Street West). In short, we live way out in the sticks! The phone lines out here still hang from telephone poles and take a constant beating from these infamous high-desert winds. Likely, it'd be decades before we'd see DSL or cable connections this far from Lancaster. We'd looked into a satellite connection (Starband, Direcway) but found their claimed connection speeds to be exaggerated (to say the least). In addition, my wife plays an online game and we all know about gaming and satellite latency times. Also, satellite equipment costs are, in my opinion, unrealistic (in relation to the actual speeds they deliver).
At this point I'd decided that given our location, a dial-up connection was our best (and only) possibility. Then I found out about A V Radionet. They came out the next day and did a site survey. A couple days later Mark came out and hooked us (and our neighbors) up. We were and are very pleased with their dedication to customer satisfaction. A few of our friends have said that our connection easily surpasses their DSL connections.
To sum up, if you live beyond DSL and cable services chances are very good that Mark can hook you up with a legitimate high-speed connection.

Addition: We are paying $80.00 per month for a 768 connection. No yearly contract to sign and a 30-day money back deal. Our equipment costs were $850.00 (which is higher than normal, but we required a more powerful radio to get the signal through a dozen or so very large trees). Yeah...its a lot of money but there is no other way to get broadband at our location. My wife and I made it our anniversary present(s) to each other.

I live in Llano, at a place called Crystalaire , where SBC has not offerend DSL, ( and has no plans to upgrad their phone system ) also their is no cable !. Dialup speeds here are at a snail slow 26.400 Kbs on a good day , with lousy reliability from phone company services, for internet connectivity .
AV RADIO NET installed my equiptment, and had me online in just 3 hours . They have different plans and pricing starting at as little as $35.00 a month. I was paying SBC $20.57 a month for an extra phone line for my computer internet access and also paying Earthlink $19.95 a month for Dialup internet access before installing AVRADIONET Wireless internet access. I was spending a total of $40.52 a month for a dead slow dialup internet !.
I'm very pleased with AVRADIONET !

I learned of this company a few months ago while I was working tech support for Proxim/Orinoco wireless technologies. A colleague of mine at the time is friends with one of the owners, Mark, and I was looking to make a deal to get my service up as there is no way for me to get any other broadband technology at my house on the eastside of Lancaster (93535 -- 15th east and Ave J). I was told by Mark that the cost for equipment would be $800.00 due to my distance from the towers, yet Mark mentioned he would drive by the area and do a site test for the cheaper equipment. Turns out I needed the $800 radio. I have just recently inquired about current prices in hopes to get the equip well below the $600 max price they quote in their pricing plans for equipment. Honestly, if it was only $600, The service would have been installed yesterday. I've got an email into sales and I'm hoping for a quick response as I'm getting desperate to ditch dial-up.
($80/mo for 768/768)

March 2003 I ordered my service during the Christmas/New Year holiday and Mark at AV Radionet was able to set up the installation within two days of my request. Prior to placing the order, I was in contact with the folks at AV Radionet on several occasions in the week prior to the actual installation with questions about the service. Each e mail and phone call was answered in a timely and accurate manner. Mark came out for the site survey and a couple of hours later, not only was the wireless service set up but I was provided with all the information necessary to get my wired/wireless home network up and running. My initial costs for equipment and first months service was $450. This included installation of the equipment and the in house wiring required. I am paying $50/month for 512K/512K service (static ip) that has proven to be very reliable. No long term commitment.
My last experience with broadband was DSL with PacBell at another house in Palmdale. The installation experience with that was nightmarish. Almost 2 months and 6 attempts from PacBell from order to live.
All in all, I am extremely satisfied with what AV Radionet has provided. They deliver what they promise.
November 2003 After almost a year of incredibly reliable service, Mark and AV Radionet continue to do a fine job of delivering what they promise.
February 2004 Still rockin'............
August 2006 Extremely reliable service with virtually no down time in years. Still delivering what they promise. Now getting 768/768 service for $50/month.
