Finally got upgraded to a Metro E curciut. 20meg up / down

It took over 120 days to install the fiber into the building. AT&T still has poor customer service since they took over Bellsouth. They still treat Bellsouth as a separate company. I guess they do this so that they have someone to point a finger to when things get bogged down.

My Other Reviews

·DSL EXTREME
I actually had AT and T internet for several years. Cox Cable internet is the other option where I live, and most of my friends/ relatives, fellow geeks have Cox and swear by it's "lightning fast speeds" and swear by it's inherent superiority.

So I decided to try it for a few months.

My experience with COX was not horrible, but it did not live up to the hype. It even went out a couple of times (for about 20 minutes a stretch).

During the same time period, my mother's COX internet went out as well, hers for a few hours.

I got a call from an ATT DSL sales Rep giving me a special $25 a month offer to return, and I took it.

I already had my NEATGEAR modem/ router combo that I'd used when I'd had AT and T before. So I plugged in the cable to the router and the green light (signalling connectivity) was on the same day I spoke with the sales rep.

But when I connected tot the router with my laptop, it told me "AT has found a problem with your connection, please contact tech support."

I spoke with tech support who informed me that I needed to create a new login name (I was using my old one from when I had it before.)

I created the new login name and entered the information into my router. But I was not able to connect. So I called tech support again and they told me that my account had been activated, but the record was showing a dummy account.

The tech support walked me through the registration process several times, all the way to the screen that says "You're ready to surf!" But I still was not able to surf.

Finally, when I got to the third tech support person, we figured out what it was. For my modem/router, I was entering in my att email address as a login (which you are supposed to do). But I was also using my email password as well.

As it turns out, your email password is not the one you use for your modem when setting up a connection: there is a different password for that purpose.

So the solution was incredibly simple, but it took a long time for tech support to deduce the real problem.

As of now, everything is up and running and working perfectly though.

I'm able to Stream Netflix movies, surf, and even play online with the PS3 when I want.

Overall, I think for my purposes, it's a good deal.

7 Years later, I still have AT&T. Other than the occasional slow speeds, they are adequate for my needs.

Service has been great. The one time I have had to call tech support, I called them at 11pm at night and they had a tech out the next morning at 8:30. It was very awesome and made me a happy customer. Ordering was a little tricky. I placed an online order and never got a confirmation so I called and placed another order. Well they put in both orders and I was getting 2 bills until I called them and got that straightened out.

...boy are you in for some suprises, just give it some time!

They treat you real well for a short period of time, then come the software updates, that cause things not to work, then you call their support, and they tell you that you will be charged 110.00 bucks if they find the problem to be in your apartment, which they always manage to find something, even if they're isn't anything; They just figure we are too stupid to understand what they're talking about so why bother asking what they found, they'll always have some technical spew that's totally bull.

Re: ...boy are you in for some suprises, just give it some time!

All my problems were solved by supplying my own modem/ router. The one they gave me lasted for about a year. The one that I bought has lasted for nearly three and it outperforms their stuff

My Other Reviews

·AT&T U-Verse
Update 04/06/11. Well I switched over to U-verse Elite package at $19.95/month for 12 months. I feel better having the 250GB Cap. Never had any issues with ATT DSL. It was always working for me and I would recommend this service to anyone that can get it.
____________________________________________________________________

Update 03/17/11. I have not had any issues and just jumped up to the Elite Package for $35 / 12 months $40 after. But now with a 150GB CAP I will have to see if I need to switch to U-verse and get a 250GB cap for the same price per month or look at other options.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

Update 05/10/09 I still have AT&T DSL and I have had no issues. Still the best deal in my area.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

Update 03/15/08 I just called to sign another 1 year contract. I kept the Pro speed and received a deal of $14.99 for 6 months and $24.99 for the second 6 months. $50 fee if I drop DSL before the year is up. So that is $180 savings. Thank you AT&T.

______________________________________________________________

Update 01/18/08: Still have had no issues with my DSL. My average speed tests now are about 2500kbps down and 430kbps up. Great for the price.
______________________________________________________________

Back on DSL after 2.4 years with Comcast. Signed up for the Pro package for $24.99. Self install was a snap. Did not have to use the install CD that came with the modem.

Speed tests average about 2350kbps down and 423kbps up. Not as fast as I had with Comcast but fast enough for what I need. Gaming pings are 20 to 35.

And I am saving $35.00 a month.

ATT DSL

@bellsouth.net

ATT DSL bait and switch

Watch out for this AT&T dsl bait and switch. Basically they sell us dsl elite in order to get the 6.0 mps speeds, but only give you 2.5 mps. They have done this to me several times. Charge you $45.00 per month for the service, but only allow you the slow speeds. When you call the service desk they tell you "oh I am sorry, let me check, yes your right, you had noise on your line", I have fixed the problem. total BS. But the whole time they are over charging you. I my case it was about 250.00.

Best thing you can do is go to »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ or »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and test your line speeds.

I used to work for SBC..

I worked for SBC/Yahoo DSL back in the day (2001-2004) for an outsourced company called Sykes in Wise Virginia. I remember the speedstream modems very well. Seems whatever AT&T buys turns to crap. We had a good reputation as a whole when it was SBC but since ATT took over seems it's all downhill. Like my former DSL provider for years Verizon. it so sucks tech support wise all overseas in India they have the worst rating on here. my advice.. get cable internet! it is so much faster and DSL slowly becoming extinct. companies such as ATT and Verizon not fooling upgrading copper based DSL anymore deploying fiber which is only most part only available to high pop/rich areas of the USA. I hope Ur cable provider not comcast though.

Yes my cable provider is Comcast....But right now we dont have cable installed where i live. I dont watch TV. I get everything i need on the internet. Whats wrong with Comcast? What other choices do I have if I decide I want cable Internet?

I left Charter because I got tired of paying out the nose for internet, my only use for internet is surfing and email so the switch to a lower priced competitor made sense. I was told that the 1.5 service is the only service that was available in my area so that is what I have, no problems so far. Did notice that 2 Wire 2701HG-B rebooted by itself last night. Overall, AT&T has been good and steady. The cheaper price is what it's all about for me.
