I had ordered via the phone 3 times before I had a successfull instal. The database tried to sell me a pro package 2 times and then the provisioning department told me twice they could not offer dsl after the fact of a order placed 1 week later. So after a few calls to the right tech lady I actually got dsl via the central office instead of the remote terminal here in Greenville Texas. They just updated there CO's hardware the 3rd time I placed an order. All in all a better deal than dial up but just a hair less better of a deal than cable when you factor cost vs speed. I have Express service now at rated speeds of 1.5 down and 384 up max. I just got it so I cant tell you my avg speeds yet. member for 21.4 years, 45 visits, last login: 12.1 years ago lodged 17.2 years ago
I live in the LA area. I've had SBC/Yahoo (and now AT&T) DSL for about a year and a half now. I was very leery of their reputation, but the price was certainly right at the time ($25 for the medium fast service). My only really negative experience was that I was told absolutely, unequivocally, by my sales person (after he said he checked with a supervisor, haha), that they would deliver my modem to my PO box. That was a lie from the beginning, and he probably knew it. When I called SBC, they laughed at me. Tell them anything to get them to sign up. Sooo....after a nasty trip downtown to pick the modem up from UPS ..... From there, everything went smoothly. I am a techno-dumbo, pretty much. I followed the instructions which came with the modem, installed the splitters, used the install CD (not installing programs I knew I wouldn't want), and I was up and on within probably 20 mins, and I haven't looked back since. I live in an apartment-dense area, and my building is old and has generally not-brilliant wiring of any kind - phone, electricity, etc. I have only lost connection maybe three times in the past 18 months, and each time I was connected again within 5 mins. after just unplugging and plugging in again. I've never had to do anything else, and it's never failed to work. And I've been up continuously, without even that little downtime, for the past 12 months at least. So, I really can't complain about SBC/AT&T DSL at all. I don't use IE, so I do not mess with their "special edition" IE, their homepage, and all that stuff. I don't want it, it annoys me, so I just avoid it. I use Firefox and Thunderbird, no problems. I used the Thunderbird forum to configure my email properly. A disappointment came when my 12 months was up and they announced my monthly price would now be $40. I could upgrade to the elite tier and keep my $25/mo price for another year, except that I live too far away to get the elite speeds. But if I signed up for another year at the mid speed, they reduced my monthly fee to $31 and some change. Fair enough. I think that if they can't come up with Fios in my area within the next year or so, though, I might want to leave my options open and just pay them monthly after that. I want cable TV through my phone lines, and AT&T only offers DISH. I can't have/don't want DISH, I want it through the phone lines. But most of all, I want TimeWarner OUT. I would consider leaving AT&T for Verizon when Verizon offers Fios in my area. member for 17.3 years, driveby review (so far) lodged 17.3 years ago
$20 / month for a dynamic IP connection running at 1.5 Mbs down and 384 kps up. Latency is about 40 msec to the first hop which isn't great due to long distance connection to the CO. It's amazing that I can get 1.5 Mbs given the distance. The ATT Direct support forum is a fantastic place to go whenever you have any problem with the DSL. They were able to troubleshoot a DAML sitting on my sister's line which prevented her from getting DSL for over 3 years. Since there is only one number on the line removing the DAML is not an issue. Way to go ATT Direct support!!! Overall, ATT is a good service provider. I wish that I can get 6 Mbs or better. Build more RT around the San Jose Willow Glenn area or run FIOS. member for 22 years, 376 visits, last login: 10.3 years ago lodged 17.3 years ago
So i got Cable and HSI all hooked up. I didnt like the price i was paying Comcast for the TV package. So i went to dish network. Comcast HSI jumped up to 60/month for 6/384. Got a flyer in the mail for ATT DSL. Called and found out im real close to the CO/RT. I qualified for the Elite plan @34.99 month. It is a 6/768 connection. I got the basic phone line which is 7.49 a month. Was told over the phone that my monthly bill would be around 55.00 after taxes. The 7.49 phone line is saving me 5.00 a month charge from Dish Network for not having a phone line plugged into my 622 DVR, since i use Vonage for my phone. I just got it up and running on 10/18/06. Not recieving full bandwidth yet. Im seeing around 4200/550. On the modem it says leave plugged in for 10 days to optomize connection. Also on the ATT Northeast forum getting alot of help from the guys there to tweak it.....much appreciated. So i will update when i get it done and tweaked. Since im coming from Cable modem i get the first 3 months free. Cant beat that. Ended up downgrading to the 3/512 service and could only get 1800/384. I have since gone back to Comcast. member for 22.3 years, 1700 visits, last login: 1.1 years ago lodged 17.4 years ago
I switched phone and Internet. Initial appointment changed from Oct 9th to 11th in plenty of time. No appointment time, anytime between 9.00am and 5.00pm kinda sad but tech showed up at 1.00pm to switch the phone as he walked out my front door advised the DSL was working. I tried to self install with the cd but it kept freezing, American operator very helpful not at all surprised and talked me through most of it. Very slow download 1200kbps up 72 kbps, tech support a little helpful kept telling me the modem a Siemens Speedstream 4100 would take 10 days to reach optimum speed huh? First tech noted i was set up at the slowest speed he fixed it (even though i ordered fastest pakage called Elite 6000/608kbps max) First night of service 10/11 no service, Cust service operator at 12.30am told me server was down. Next morning 1350down 82 up plus my Outlook Express outgoing email would not work for other domains running through OE. Indian customer service a little vague but he opened Port 25 to allow outgoing non sbcglobal emails although it took 10 hours to work-he had said it would be instant. Still v.slow new cust service person said i was set at slow he would adjust it. Reiterated the 'it takes 10 days for the modem to get up to speed mantra' i told him i did not believe him i wanted to see some speed. Operator scheduled a tech to visit my home that day which he did said my speed was throtled back down the street all would be fine. Average download on dslreports and speakeasy (when it works) is 4800 and 550 up. 2 days i'm happy so far. i do have to restart pc after a day away to get email to send/resend but so far very impressed with AT&T cust service and support of course i was impressed with Time Warner when they got me to switch to them, that lasted 6 months. I have no doubt AT&T will fuck it up within 6 months. Update: as i edit my original email from thursday (on Sunday)AT&T called again yesterday to follow up on my comments on an email they sent me asking how they did. She entered fixed IP addresses in Network Connections on my Control Panel. This morning all looks good. I have to say so far i am very impressed. colin in Houston (review was emailed from domain ablogc.com) lodged 17.4 years ago
Decided to switch from Cox Cable to AT&T as they are a newer service here in Kansas. Selected the 3000/512 ($19.95) service. Already upgrading to 6000/756 ($29.99). Cox was 9000/1000 (($62.95!!!) I had heard horror stories about AT&T service but have yet to experience anything but excellent customer service. The install Tech was the best I've dealt with in over 7 years of on/off DSL service. I'm 5,000 feet to the CO and I've got fiber to my neighborhood!!!! The main reason I switched to DSL from Cox cable modem was the fact Cox was non responsive to Latency issues for gamers. Also, with their VOIP modem, I was limited to DOCSIS 1.1 only. They market their higher download speeds, but unfortunately (at least with me) refused to address my latency issues (around 80+ with 3-7% packet loss). This made it nearly impossible to play any decent first person shooter (like HL Source). AT&T has been an excellent service so far and was installed professionally. Wait times for customer service never exceeded 3 minutes. (5 separate calls) Will report later in regards to service up-time etc. BTW, my latency is now in the 20's. member for 19.7 years, 98 visits, last login: 9.3 years ago lodged 17.4 years ago
Well for 27.99 I am getting 5.0/636. I also get 3 months free for switching from cable. I am very happy that I switched from InsightBB. The speeds and pings are much better and I am hoping the reliablility is better also. I was on cable internet for 8 years so I was very nervouse about changing. member for 21.5 years, 66 visits, last login: 4.5 years ago lodged 17.5 years ago
I had moved to a small town that didn't have DSL, so when I moved back here to Springfield MO I had pre-ordered the new Elite speed a month in advance, 6016/768. My DSL was up and running 3 days early and had no problems at first. The second week had my speed capped off at 1.038 for some reason and had to post at ATT direct to get it fixed. Did good for a while then had a network outage and they capped me again, so had to post again on here to get it fixed. Have been doing good since then. My speeds have been consistant at 5100/678, so can't gripe anymore. Am currently waiting on a new 2WIRE router, I called and said I wanted to upgrade to the newest one. Was told it would ship immediately and get here by today, but hasn't showed up yet. Will wait til the end of the week before I call them. Overall, has been real good with them, the speed for the price is excellent. member for 18.3 years, 2908 visits, last login: 6.2 years ago lodged 17.6 years ago
With WorldNet many years but recently went to DSL. Ordered on a Sunday afternoon; within 2 hours, Covad e-mailed saying they were working on the order, giving me date when modem would arrive and "complete" date. Modem arrived early--had the line work been completed, I would have been up and running in 3 days, not 5. Installation was easy with no problems. Have the BritePort Covad-issue modem with dynamic IP. Even though I'm in an SBC state, I chose to go with AT&T/Covad--wanted to keep my ISP and am not sorry, even though this package is more expensive than the Yahoo plan. Am pleased with everything about the service! member for 17.8 years, driveby review (so far) lodged 17.8 years ago
***Just to clarify....This is not to be confused with the former SBC or SNET customers. I am using AT&T as a CLEC. I am in the Northeast but in Verizon territory. So although, I use AT&T for both phone service and DSL service, Verizon is still the ILEC here in New Jersey and they still own and maintain the copper. They just lease the lines to AT&T. ALSO: When you use AT&T as a CLEC, the DSL service is AT&T Worldnet, NOT the SBC or Yahoo. Their offers and prices are totally different and are only for former SBC customers.*** Okay so on with the review... I don't like Verizon and didn't want their service for either POTS or DSL. I've used Covad in my workplace and liked them very much. Very reliable and fast connections. Since AT&T uses Covad for their DSL service, I found this to be good news for me because the only way you can get Covad service without Verizon as your phone company is to get a dedicated line and there can be complications involved in that. But I still wanted phone service anyway, just not through Verizon and I didnt want Voip either. So, I ordered AT&T for my phone service and ordered the AT&T Worldnet DSL service a few days after. When you order, you have the option of choosing self-installation which is free or you can opt for a professional install where a tech will come out to the premises. The pro install is $199 if i'm not mistaken. As of this review, prices are $29.99/mo. for 1.5/368k service and $39.99/mo. for 3.0/368k service which I chose. AT&T and Covad seem to have a good partnership. After you place your order, you get emails from Covad regarding the process and how far the order is and whether or not there is a problem. They provide you with basic information such as your Circuit number and your order number. My DSL service was turned on 4 days after the order was placed online and got my modem and kit the next day. Not bad at all. The install CD is self explanatory and guides you through the process. AT&T Worldnet is not a bad ISP. You can set up multiple e-mail accounts and they offer web pages as well. The homepage is pretty user friendly and offers news and access to your features and account. The connection is fast and reliable. My speed test results from speakeasy.net as of 5/25/06 @ 11:02pm are 2479kbps down and 316kpbs. Not bad. I'm about 4,000 feet away from my CO. Connections on Verizon are slightly faster (2700kbps average test results for 3.0 service) because Verizon overprovisions the line to be closer to the advertised speed. Covad does not engage in this practice as of yet but should. My only gripes with AT&T... Outsources technical support. Yes, India! Ugh. These people dont know jack and it can be quite fustrating for some. Luckily I haven't had a major issue yet but you know how it can be when a company outsources. Another issue is the slow upload speed. Although I don't do much uploading, 384kbps advertised speed is kinda slow these days when other companies such as Verizon offer 768kbps upload and even faster for Cable ISPs. So all in all, I'm pretty satisfied with my AT&T service. The only thing I wish is that they would do is offer the same pricing and service offerings they give to the former SBC customers. It's a little confusing because they're acting like 2 different companies right now. One for the CLEC customers such as myself who use AT&T Worldnet service and one for the former SBC customers who they just acquired. Former SBC customers have an option of a 6.0mbps service called "Elite" while Worldnet customers or customers using AT&T as a CLEC do not. So if your'e not currently in a former SBC territory, you dont have access to their prices and offerings, you're only choice is AT&T Worldnet and not SBC/Yahoo service. member for 23.5 years, 1018 visits, last login: 10.5 years ago lodged 17.8 years ago
