I signed up for DSL when I moved into my apartment in September. After reading an article on consumerist.com I noticed I could switch my service to the "Dry Loop" service which did not include the phone line and all of the fun taxes that get tacked on to it. So I decided to sign up for the Pro service for 1.5mb down 384KB up. Closing my old account and opening a new one for Dry Loop was no problem at all since I called within the first month of having my service turned on. The local CSR was very helpful and even refunded me my first month's bill minus the new DSL total which I thought was really cool (Almost $50 in refunds right there!). She tells me my service will shut off on Monday and be turned back on Thursday. She gives me my account number and says I'm all set. The account number is not the phone number that I had before anymore. The account number is actually now some odd number. I try to go to the website to register the account so I can pay my bill online and am unable to. AT&T's website uses the phone number plus a 4 digit number for the billing and since my now Dry Loop account is not a real phone number I cannot access the site. I setup myself for automatic deposit through AT&T which wasn't so bad, just wish I could have set it up myself. Thursday rolls around and after about a half an hour on the phone with a CSR setting up my new DSL account I was online. I haven't had an issue since last week when the modem was randomly dropping my connection though I attribute this to possible maintenance with the offering of U-Verse in my area. I'm so glad AT&T went back to the Siemens modems and moved away from the 2wire stuff. The Siemens stores all of my account info so my Netgear router doesn't have to do anything but talk to my PC and PS3. I have to say I'm very satisfied as I haven't had to call tech support since I switched my account to the Dry Loop. My parents have been customers with AT&T for years and I've setup DSL in both of their homes and I've set it up at the two places I lived in college.

7/29 Update...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but AT&T DSL service has taken a turn for the worst. Apparently my dryloop price skyrocketed in April to 29.00/month for 1.5MB service. Furious, I called up to see what was going on. They told me it was a promotion that only lasted six months and that's why I was being billed at 29.00/month. That is definitely not what the CSR had originally told me. I asked about another promotion and to look at upgrading my service since my neighbors have 3MB next door. I was told that they do not offer 3MB service for DSL in my area! How can that be if my neighbors have it??? Very upset the CSR pitched U-Verse to me. It sounded like a good idea so I signed up for it and wanted the 6/2 service for $30 a month after 12 month promotion and $5 off. Then the CSR told me I would have to pay the full $55 because I have DSL available in my area. So they won't let me go to 3MB DSL and I have to pay an outrageously inflated price for 1.5MB or u-verse service. What kind of insanity is going on?

8/21/2009

Bought a house with no U-verse service. Back on 768k dsl. THIS BLOWS!

10/25/2010

Called up AT&T to cancel the abysmally slow speed DSL and (GAG) was going to go to charter but they finally increased my speed from 768k to 3MB DSL! w00t! Dry loop price is $35 a month, slightly higher from what I was paying for U-verse when I had it at my old apartment ($30 for 6MB). Oh well, way better than going to charter.

I have AT&T Direct 3 meg service at $14.95 a month on the 12 month term. This is my first time using high speed service, I was on dial-up for 6 years so I am happy!

I do not have AT&T as my local phone company is why I had to get AT&T Direct. That is also the reason why I had to wait 15 days after I had placed the order to get it installed. Since I had phone service with another provider and I was using dial-up I was not considered a priority. That really didn't bother me much considering I had been on dial-up for 6 years I could make it for 15 more days. When the big day arrived the install process went smoothly, I was very pleased with the tech that came out, he did an excellent job.

I bought the AT&T Motorola DSL Modem at Walmart. I chose to do this in case there was any problems I could return it to the store instead of having to ship it back to AT&T. So far no problems, it's working good.

The service was installed on 11/30/2010. I waited until now to give my review so I would have time to evaluate the service. So far I really like it, I haven't had any problems.

After my 12 month contract is up I will probably upgrade to the 6 meg service. Some of you may ask why I didn't get it instead of the 3 meg. I chose the 3 meg for now because as I said before I was on dial-up for 6 years, I figured anything would be faster than that. Also I thought if I went ahead and got the 6 meg to begin with I wouldn't have anywhere to go from there. I wanted something to look forward to!

I have been a DSL advocate for long time. Cable vs DSL their both equal in speed DSL is available in speeds up to 15MBps. Now you can get DSL from AT&T with no phone allows you to avoid all the Federal mandatory taxes and use Magic Jack for phone Service.

Currently best DSL pricing I have seen is DSLextreme.com but you need to keep phone Service. AT&T can get up to 6Mbps for 24.95 with local loop only no Phone or 3Mbps for 19.95.

If you have existing service you will need to switch over first then call back to get Internet pricing. They will say you need to disconnect service first then start service just keep to your guns and they can do it with out interruption.

Clarification: I don't like Comcast because they are bad but because they do bait and switch on you they will give you a great price but it is only for 3 to 6 month then the price goes up to $60+, They claim their speed is faster than DSL but this a MYTH as stated above you can get DSL/ADSL service with same speeds as Cable.

I just went with it and they say due to where I live I can only get 1.5 meg download speed. I think they want you to have their land line.

Cap limit?

I am thinking of going back to At&T DSL since its a bit less expensive than Comcast. I had DSL a few years ago and there was no download cap imposed. My question is there a download cap as we just started using Netflix via our Bluray player.

I have tried a number of other services and found them less reliable than ATT.

Therefore I have reinstalled ATT Uverse and found that this time it is very worthwhile. The service was immediate and all supplies were furnished. The techs were knowledgeable and very efficient.

First of all, I know ATT DSL isn't the fastes anymore, even at 6mpbs down and 512 kbps up, it's still lagging behind. Fortunately, they make up for it by providing great service that is not riddled with hidden caps.

They have never given me any problems, and though my modem has acted funky at times, it was always fixable and usually just needed a reboot. I choose not to go with Charter or Comcast because of their subpar service; it's faster, but I just don't agree with caps.

ATT DSL has never been cheaper, now is the time to buy, it is rock solid and the connection latency is perfectly suited for online gamers.

I needed to restart service at an address where I had AT&T DSL service in the past. The person I was originally routed to tested the address over and over and reported that DSL was not available at that address. This was frustrating to me since I had AT&T DSL at this exact address as recently as three years ago. This first person transferred me to another AT&T person to disconnect another service (part of my phone call to them).

This second person was unsatisfied with the first AT&T person's results and asked permission to look herself. I said of course, go ahead. She came back saying that it showed available. We went through the order process and it continued to show available so I was setup with what I came for originally and more. As I already knew, this address is very far from the central office so there are limits to the speed but I was still able to get 3.0 speed, double what I used to have at the same address. And since it's new service, it has the $19/month price (usually $35/mo) for the first year. The operator suggested that after that first year, I can probably bundle my AT&T wireless billing with this DSL service and keep a lower price at that time.

I did not need any new hardware. I'm using the SpeedStream 5100 DSL modem from my original service with AT&T at that same address, coupled with a TrendNet wireless router. More boxes and cables than their 2Wire modem/router but free to me.

Installation was no problem except the AT&T Reg process hung up trying to finish the modem setup. But since I know that modem, I completed the registration process manually with no issue. I was online right on the schedule that AT&T promised. Speed tests at 2.4; lower than the 3.0 account speed but I've never achieved full account speed on any installation yet. At the moment, I am very satisfied.

My Other Reviews

·Comcast
I decided to dump cable internet from exspensivecast, and went with att phone and dsl. I am going to have to give the tech that came out a 5 star excellent rating as well.

Dumped dsl on 11/19/10 got fed up with the line issues, even after dropping down to 1.5 it still was iffy. It worked great on 6 for like 2 months and then bam. Back with exspensivecast again. Even though it costs slightly more with cable I know I won't have problems like with dsl.

Tech had to install new service.

Been using cricket here in the country ($40 a month), but EVDO is edgy this far from the freeway.

Thought i would try the DSL since the price cut and working up to par, better than expected. I did have a 2Wire Wireless Gateway 2701HG-B already, I got from a friend so i saved money on that. No glitches so far , but will up date in a month.

I had the account since Ameritech days. Started with 756k for $40.00 per month. Then the speed was increased to 1.5m at the same rate. Then got the 3m package when it became available to me and at the time was paying $25.00 per month on a one year introductory special.

On the two occasions I have had line problems they were corrected with in two days or less time. Other then that there has been only one time I can remember there be a service outage that lasted less than a day do to network problems on the ISP's end.
