I needed to restart service at an address where I had AT&T DSL service in the past. The person I was originally routed to tested the address over and over and reported that DSL was not available at that address. This was frustrating to me since I had AT&T DSL at this exact address as recently as three years ago. This first person transferred me to another AT&T person to disconnect another service (part of my phone call to them).

This second person was unsatisfied with the first AT&T person's results and asked permission to look herself. I said of course, go ahead. She came back saying that it showed available. We went through the order process and it continued to show available so I was setup with what I came for originally and more. As I already knew, this address is very far from the central office so there are limits to the speed but I was still able to get 3.0 speed, double what I used to have at the same address. And since it's new service, it has the $19/month price (usually $35/mo) for the first year. The operator suggested that after that first year, I can probably bundle my AT&T wireless billing with this DSL service and keep a lower price at that time.

I did not need any new hardware. I'm using the SpeedStream 5100 DSL modem from my original service with AT&T at that same address, coupled with a TrendNet wireless router. More boxes and cables than their 2Wire modem/router but free to me.

Installation was no problem except the AT&T Reg process hung up trying to finish the modem setup. But since I know that modem, I completed the registration process manually with no issue. I was online right on the schedule that AT&T promised. Speed tests at 2.4; lower than the 3.0 account speed but I've never achieved full account speed on any installation yet. At the moment, I am very satisfied.

I decided to dump cable internet from exspensivecast, and went with att phone and dsl. I am going to have to give the tech that came out a 5 star excellent rating as well.

Dumped dsl on 11/19/10 got fed up with the line issues, even after dropping down to 1.5 it still was iffy. It worked great on 6 for like 2 months and then bam. Back with exspensivecast again. Even though it costs slightly more with cable I know I won't have problems like with dsl.

Been using cricket here in the country ($40 a month), but EVDO is edgy this far from the freeway.

Thought i would try the DSL since the price cut and working up to par, better than expected. I did have a 2Wire Wireless Gateway 2701HG-B already, I got from a friend so i saved money on that. No glitches so far , but will up date in a month.

I had the account since Ameritech days. Started with 756k for $40.00 per month. Then the speed was increased to 1.5m at the same rate. Then got the 3m package when it became available to me and at the time was paying $25.00 per month on a one year introductory special.

On the two occasions I have had line problems they were corrected with in two days or less time. Other then that there has been only one time I can remember there be a service outage that lasted less than a day do to network problems on the ISP's end.

Att is the only provider in my area and im lucky to get 6 megs. 40 bucks a month for it was extreme and i got to where i couldnt pay for it. it got turned off but i established new service by using my dob instead of ss and used the option to have it auto drafted out of my bank account so i wouldn't have to pay the 100 bucks up front. It took 2 weeks for my service to become activated and activation was a breeze. I was able to use my exsisting equipment (2wire gateway) and didn't have to change anything, just a new username and password. Can't beat 6 megs down for 19.95 a month for 12 months now.

OMG I'm about to cry

3 weeks ago I ordered dsl wireless for my daughter in college. A few days after she received service her computer had a horrible virus. I called to check if her package included virus protection. I was told yes. The next day my daughter told me that her service was not working. I called and they told me that her service had an order to disconnect. I did not do that. They ordered her a new service but was not able to accomodate for almost two weeks. I called today(a day before the service was to be connected again) and was told that the service was never ordered but I have an order number. I was given the run around for a half hour before someone told me that the service could have been done again that same day. Then they supposedly connected me to the person that could take care of that but while I was on hold, their hours of business was over for the day. I'm strarting to think that everyone that woeks their is wreckloose and just transfers people so they done't have to do any work. I'm amazed that they are still in business

Re: OMG I'm about to cry

most virus's come from questionable websites or other infected computers on an unprotected open wireless network. Kids are going to sites to download music for free and those websites are loaded with virus. many kids download software to find free music which opens their computers up to being infected or even credit card/ID theft.
She needs to buy software to install on her computer such as Norton internet security.
Good luck.

Speed Is Great! Delivered Performance was actually more than Promised! Very High Quality Connection with Low Pings
Sales and Account Info Could Get their Stories to match.
Great Value, but AT&T Needs to work on what they Tell the Customer!

This is a Review For AT&T Extreme DSL 6.0/768 Service in the SE Region.

Now, about Sales...

They needs to get their stories straight. They told me on the phone I was getting 6.0 mbit/ 1.5 mbit Service...it is not. It is 6.0/768. They also told me that getting the service on another line would not be an issue and all I had to do was speak with the installer when he got here. That was a lie. He could NOT do that on site, and could only hook it up to the number listed which was my Home Phone which is exactly what I told them NOT to do. We had two seaprate lines running to this House, and i wanted the line that was not being used to be setup with it own Phone number to run to this DSL Gateway. That's not what ended up happening, and they are lucky it happened at all. I was a bat's eyelash from calling them up, and telling them to cancel the order that I would be sending the stuff back.

This was just an oversight either. I calledc them up on 3 separate occasions and made sure they understood what was being requested and they assured me each time that they had it all setup. On 3 separate occasions they lied to me and told mne the installer would take care of the second line, and get the second line all setup with it's own number when he arrived. When he got here, he told me the complete opposite. He told me that ONLY sales could setup a new number and he couldn't do that even if he called them, that it has to be done by the customer through sales. Bad move AT&T ! Now I can understand when wires get crossed, but lies I will not tolerate. I told them I would be reporting that and here I am true to my word.

So on install coordination and pre sales info you got one step above worst which is a 2 out of 5 just because I'm feeling generous today. If you hadn't lied to me, you would've got a 5 AT&T. See what lying to the cutomer gets 'ya?

OK, onto the the Speeds...

Excellent. Just oustanding. The installer himself did a great job despite AT&T's screwups over the phone. I went ahead and let him install a splitter into the box so we could get up and running without this turning into a month lon project. I ran my own run of CAT5e wire to a jack in the room where the compter is at, and the speeds delivered are in excess of what was promised. They get 5 out of 5 on that. Speeds of 6.4+ Down and 478 up are right inline with what they should be. I'm overlooking the lie about the 1.5 upload because I already nailed them on that one, and what is delivered is what was supposed to be, and it actually better than what most people get right nextdoor to me, so the connectuion is optimal, and what the DSLAM is putting out is what I'm getting less a little overhead on the upload side. Upload rates are capped at 503 and that is still in the 80% of what the theoretical upload is which is acceptable.

I'm also very pleased with the line quality. Line quality is exxcelent. Pings are low and stay below 47ms at all times so far. There is ZERO ping jitter, and I get Grade "A" line quality. In gaming this is optimal and I have tested that, and get the same performance in gaming.

The Equipment Delivered was a 2Wire 2701 Wireless Gateway Modem. I have read some stories on here about them being bad, but haven't seen that thus far. The performance of the gateway is actually excellent. I also read of some overheating issues, but after having this thing on for 2 days straight it isnn't even warm. I have also read of some power pack issues, but wall warts are easy to get, and I'm really not too concerned with replacing something that cheap.

Oveall this is good service and value, but AT&T needs to get on their sales reps about lies. They won't gain anything by lying, and will only get caught in them, and reported on forums like these for it, and that's not a good reputation to get. The customer WILL find out just like I did. Yeah, I let it slide, I need good service and this DSL is very clean, and reliable.

All a company has to do is tell me the truth if there's a problem and I'll be more than happy to work with them. OTOH, lying will just bring more problems on them. I might even buy another modem, and have it installed on a separate line, but I really hope they don't try the lying game again, because just one more of those, and they will loose that sale. I hope you read this AT&T, because if you're in the buisness to make money, then make it. You won't make money by lying...it don't work.

Update: Month 2, speeds are slightly better after a couple modem retrains, and some tweaks here and there along with a little tidying up of wire teminations. I'm Interleaved at Present and am curently working on getting it into FastPath. I need to reduce what is called "Uncallened Echo" and one of the techs at ATT (very helpful BTW) was nice enough to let me kbnow a few things I can try to reduce that. Caveat is that it may or may not improve, but it won't if I don't try. I have very low pings now at 45ms, but would like to get that into the 20ms or lower range for stellar gaming performance. I'm always working on something with these rigs, and getting the most out of this service is my latest project along with some other Househols wiring I'm working on.

On the subject of tech support. I could not be happier with them. I've seen alot of posts on here made to the effect of people of other nationalities from other countries working as techs and customers not being able to understand them. I have no idea what the ehck is up with that. I have not had that...not that it would matter, but the people I have spoken to on the phone, were VERY courteous, they were sympathtic to my concerns, and were very helpful when asked some fairly technical questions. I have spoke to them on 3 occasions now. I had one issue where i had multiple drives and Operating Systems, and one of them wasn't being recognized properly and I could not get Gateway settings to "take" when i applied them. The tech di a remote linkup, saw my issue immediately, and talked me through some steps and inside of 5 minutes had a very technical issue resolved alot quicker than I thought it would be. I had to explain a quite complex setting to him, and he understood it, and had to be pretty attentive to what I was telling himn to remember all of that.

The other 2 times were fairly minor questions, but again, these were answered promptly, correctly, and I had NO issues understanding them or their dialect, and feel pretty certain that they were from right here in the USA. I know accents when I hear them. Never ONCE have I had and issue with tech support of any kind.

Customer Support initially I did have some issues with, but those have vbeen recitfied to my satifaction, and I reported those in my initial review. They got their wires crossed, and on one occasion made a remark to me that turned out to be not true, but again, those concerns have been taken care of by AT&T, and those matters I consider closed now.

I've seen alot of AT&T bashing on this forum, and alot of very bad info. Be careful what you take as the Gospel, because you may be quite surprised to find out that things are alot different than they may appear after reading alot of the negativity here.

For this update i can say that i'm very pleased with this service. I also have many neighbors who ahve got this same service due to the fact that it just went live here, and NOT ONE has expressed any disastifaction with it whatsoever. I've talked with others who ghave had it in their area for years and again, NOT ONE of them have expressed any disatisfaction at all with it or with AT&T as a company.

Lesson here is don't believe everything you read on the Internet. I've personally been sent on 4 separate wild goose chases reading false and misleading info here, and on all 4 occasions actually found the complete opposite of the the stuff that had been posted. Had i beleived what I had read, I may not have got this service, and would've only been limiting myself. For 20 bucks it sure as hell beats Dialup, and that's what I paid a month for Dialup years ago. It also sure as hell beats Satelite at 1/6 the speed for 70 bucks, and beats EVDO too.

This service has delivered exactly what was promised and more, and i cannot find one thing wrong with it, the support has been great, and the I can find no fault at all with AT&T as a whole.

Speeds as of this date on September 1, 2010 are 6.40-6.60 M dowm, and .42 M up. Pings are currently 45 through Speedtest, and 38-40 thrpugh a game UI and the CMD Prompt to Google.com.

Aw and no failures from the 2Wire Gateway either. Yopu'd think those were horrible or something from the things I read here. Over the past month it has performed without issue, and not a single dropout except for when I myself rebooted it or cut power to work on things, and there were only 4 events logged, and all 4 of those in the Console wre when i myself powered it down, or rebooted it myself. other than that, the unit has worked without issue. I do hear that Power packs (Wall Warts) may need to be replaced at some point in the future, and will be ordering one of those as a backup power supply in case I need it. That was verified through my installer...not a rumor on here, but from an individual I trust with 1st hand Knowledge from working with these setups every day. I trust him, and kniow the guy well because he happens to be a feeind of mine, and he's a straight shooter. Aw, and in case you need more evidence, he keeps only 2Wire's in his truck to replace modems. He said he's rep[laced more burned out Motorola Modems then he has 2Wire wall warts. He showed me a Motorola that has a burned up casing, and if you saw what I did, it would send chills down your spine. i wouldn't want one of those things in my house! They are a fire hazzard. The casing was literally melted and burned. For a always on connection that's scary as hell! My 2 Wire doesn't even get warm, so I know that won't be happening in MY house.

Let this review be a warning to be very careful what you take as the Gospel. Things are VERY different in actuality,.

Update: Still using Elite service and have been happy with it, such as it is. Always looking for more speed, wish AT&T went to the FIOS route, but, for the price, it is still a good value. The only cable competitor can only give 6.0 megs in our area as well.

I have been using SNET/SBC/AT&T DSL since it first was available. Elite Service (up to 6 Meg) just became available in our town and I called last evening to upgrade. Was able to get a free new Gateway with the upgrade, no contract required. I had also looked at switching to Comcast cable for the internet only which is now offered even without cable tv. I am very happy with my AT&T DSL service so far.

I have tried Earthlink's DSL and have tried Adelphia's Cable internet. After about a week of Earthlink I returned the modem and had the service shut off. They just could not get the DSL going. I spent hours and hours of talking to tech support. They then decided to send a tech out. Ended up missing the tech due to a timing conflict. Talk to the on-site tech on the phone only to find out he was not very professional sounding. Wanted to pounce on me the first second he detected a disagreement.

I used Adelphia for three months and could not take the connection latency issues. Or how strict they are about running home servers. For the price....I feel like you are not getting a good deal.

So I went with ATT DSL, love the fact I pay for the service and can run the home server and connection worries and connection slow downs are something of the past! Plus they just gave me unlimited email space at no extra charge! Oh yeah, I got the 1500/384 Kbps for $12.95 one year term.

12/15/07

Price went up to about $20.00 a month. However, no I have no contract which is great! Service, I still have no complaints

8/11/2010
Still Have ATT DSL and love it. Always steady and price gets better. I am now on dry loop and playing $19.95 for the 6/768

Re: Speeds

It has jumped around mostly around 5015kbps down and 630kbps up. I hardly use the line, it is in the basement and setup on the wireless router for a second connection. However, I noticed one day after heavily using the connection. It actually jumped up to 6016kbps down on the speed test. I was surprised because I have never seen a DSL connection be right on the money. Maybe the connection getting better as you use it more??? Dunno
