Well, about a year and a half ago, I came to AT&T from DSL Extreme, there was no pain in the switch. BUT, there has been pain ever since. I had 1500 (DOWN) with DSL Extreme. AT&T promised my 1500 but for some reason after I started service they said they could only give me 768. I asked then why, since they told me they used the same lines as DSL extreme, they never gave me a real answer. My speed has gotten slower and slower over time. I am down to 437 right now after two reboots. My promotional contract is up and I can't wait to leave.

AT&T SLOWEST DSL

I'm visiting with my brother and I could not believe how SLOW his AT&T DSL speed is. He's paying around 36 dollars if I'm correct and I've tested the speed...

·Charter
After several years with Charter, I got disgusted enough by the new "feature" of download limits to dump them and go back to DSL. Fortunately for me, fallout from the BellSouth merger meant I can now get dry-line service, which is a good thing. It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever (over) pay for wired phone service again.

AT&T (hereafter referred to as The Death Star) is not terribly reliable when it comes pricing and service information. The Death Star's website is limited to Windows and Internet Explorer for most functionality, including region-specific pricing and customer service chat windows. In other words, if you are a Mac (or Linux) user, you are SOL. This and other Mac-unfriendly behavior from The Death Star is frankly amazing, considering the company would be sinking into the tar pit of outmoded 20th century dinosaurs if it weren't for iPhone profits--but I digress.

The Death Star webpage offered their top-speed of dry line DSL (6 megs) for $47.99. They also offered a total of $175 cash back for new customers switching from cable and signing up online. I confirmed all of the above via a chat a couple of weeks ago (on a Windows computer, I'm sorry to say), but when I finished running my internal line and was ready to place an order, the rep I reached on that day on chat blew me off with, "no discounts or cash back for dry line customers, you miserable no-phone scumbag." (Okay, I made up the last part.)

Nonplussed, I called the 800 number (actually 888-757-6500) to see what was what. Not only did the phone rep approve me for the full cash back amount, she quoted me a monthly price five bucks cheaper than the website. Stupid, Microsoft-centric website! Bad!

The service was hooked up three days later, but it took another few days for the modem to arrive (I bought my own on eBay, so this was not The Death Star's fault).

Then my troubles began.

The modem (a pull from a customer with previous Death Star service) would get to the initial sign-up page, but absolutely would not set up my account correctly (couldn't enter in an account username or password). The Death Star's enrollment CD froze up halfway through installation on my Mac, and was useless. (believe me, I didn't want to use it at all--ISP installation software is always garbage). It took an hour-long call to customer service to get my account set up, followed by two more hour-long calls to get the Death Star's new Yahoo-based email working with the OS X Mail client. Every call started with a rep sighing, "Oh, you have a... Mac?" Forget about getting help from the Death Star's website--the most recent Mac Mail help page is for version 3.0, which is about a year old (3.5 is the current version). Simply clicking on the main "help" button for Mac Mail takes you to a page with setup instructions for Mail 1.0--which is several years out of date. Pitiful.

The service itself (besides the weirdness of the Yahoo-based mail, which is pretty crappy) has been good. As per DSL's reputation vs. cable, the speed is as-advertised and rock solid all the time (Charter's speed fluctuated wildly, and God help you if you needed to do anything between 5PM and 8PM). All in all, I saved money and got a more consistent provider in terms of speed, but good grief, ATT--get your damn act together for Mac users, or we'll have Steve Jobs fire your ass from the iPhone and put you the hell out of business.

UPDATE: Turns out I was repeatedly lied to by the rep who signed me up. AT&T has tried to renege on the base price, the cash back, and the bundling discount. On top of that, the Death Star's miserable technical support makes this an even less enjoyable move, even if they weren't a bunch of crooks. Problem is, my alternate duopoly choice has already instituted download caps, and they also have a bad case of Suck when it comes to customer no-service.

Monopolies suck.

UPDATE UPDATE: Getting all my billing issues fixed took months and an Executive Customer Service Carpet Bomb (look it up). Then the speed dropped down to crap levels during peak times. So I dropped the Death Star like a bad habit. THEN they instituted metered billing and caps, and ended any chance of ever getting me back. ..|.., AT&T.

I was considering leaving my cable ISP to go to ATT, but....

thank you for telling us all about the detailed backstabbing that Death Star did to you. Sorry you got put through run-around. I had a sneaky suspicion their service is not all cracked up to be like in their TV commercials, the mailers they frequently send me. I get 7 MB download speed right now thru my ISP which is Bright House.

After reading all of the other feeds about the downtime, service interruptions, low connectivity, I was like OMG! I would be fuming just as bad as all of you if I was in the same boat. I have never had any service interruptions with Bright House since I've had them 5 years, only one time and that was due to excessive rain the area.

Thank you all for posting the stories, but what is sad is that the government lets this happen to the common consumer. Everybody needs to tell everybody else to tell their senators so that this can be brought before the top dogs and get them to make ATT fix issues.

I have had AT&T Fastaccess DSL since 2006, back when it was still BellSouth. I have the DSL Xtreme 3.0 package which allows a bandwidth of 3.0 Mbps Download and 384 Kbps Upload. I was at first supplied with a Westell 6100 Modem. It eventually burnt out and they replaced it with a 2Wire Modem/Wireless Router combo. The installation was a snap! I get great latency times around the United States. I have never had any major trouble out of my connection. When I did have a problem, AT&T's customer service helped me along. I use this connection mainly for online gaming on Xbox LIVE on my Xbox 360 and browsing and downloading content on the web. The only downside to ADSL is that the upload speed isn't that great. I'm not going to complain about it though. It normally takes about 1-2 minutes to upload a video to Youtube depending on how big the video is. Overall, this is a great connection if you like to Online Game and Download a great deal of content from the web, at a budget.

--UPDATED--

This connection has went to hell in a hand basket really quickly ever since I moved just across town. It would go out intermittently and AT&T refused to do anything about it other than to put me on a noise profile, which made my ping times in online games go up significantly (i could rarely find a game under 100ms ping). Since then, I have switched to Comcast Cable. It's way more reliable and faster than anything AT&T offers in my area.

I've been an att high speed dsl customer for about 6 months now and so far
the service has been amazing. the customer service is some of the best I've
seen, but it does depend on the intellegence of the person who answers your
call. at first we signed up online so that we could get a rebate on the
modem (free modem sounded awesome to us as generally they cost a hundred
bucks) but somehow our apartment number got deleted out of their information
and so the modem got sent back. So I called back and they re-did our order,
but later that day my boyfriend realized that since we re did our order by
phone, we wouldn't get the rebate, which was important. So we called again
and the lady was so nice about it that she just waived the cost of the modem
altogether so we didn't even have to deal with the whole rebate process at
all! She was like a goddess of customer service repreentatives. We recieved
the modem very quickly, but it took a few days for the service to be
activated. on the service activation date, our modem continued to flash red
lights, so we called and they couldn't fix the problem so they set up an
appointment for a maintenance man to come check out our phone lines. He came
the very next day! I was amazed at the speed of service. He had trouble
figuring out what the probalem was, but he didn't give up until it was
fixed, wich was really nice. Since then, our connection has been great and
we haven't even had to contact cutomer service at all. sometimes there is a
long ish wait to talk to someone, but it's worth the wait. I really
recommend ATT uverse internet service to anyone looking for a great deal! we
only pay 15 bucks a month! can't beat that price!

I've had DSL at this address for as long as it was available to me and it has always been reliable and there when I needed it. I live in the outskirts of town so all I was able to get was the 1.5 Mbps service, and I really wanted more, so I went with Clear Wireless 4G which promised 6 Mbps service. They did do that, for a while, but alas, it was not to last. It lasted just long enough to convince me that I could get rid of DSL and enjoy the much faster experience of streaming HD video and the like. After Clear didn't pan out, I re-subscribed to DSL and was promised I could go back to my 1.5 Mbps plan, but when my line went live a few days later, I was only getting .75 Mbps. I sent a message to the techs here on the forums at ATT Direct and they updated the sales database to show my line capable of 1.5, but as of now the sales people are still unable to upgrade my line to my old speed. I'm confident that I'll be able to do so in the near future, though. I am still looking for a faster ISP that is not the cable company here with their 50 gig/month limit, and when I find it, I am not cancelling my DSL this time, I'm keeping this as a very reliable backup. The techs here on this forum are worth more than all of the techs on the phones combined.

updated: The 150 GB cap that has been implemented has totally soured me on this provider and I'm now exploring other options.

Signed up for dsl and was told I would pay a promotion of $19.95/mo for first year. Received first bill, $42.95. Customer service states that I have to pay regular rate for two months before I get any credit. They say that I will end up not paying anything on the third month. Shady company, I don't know how they are still in business. I'm an idiot for thinking that I can trust this company. I would suggest to anyone thinking of purchasing from AT&T Internet, landline or business, just DON'T do it. You are setting yourself up for a headache and being ripped off!!!!

Avoid AT&T/SBC DSL

AT&T service just gets worse (slower) every year, but they raise their price every year. They really just want to sell me a $90+ service bundle, and they don't have any interest in loyal customers who don't want TV. I am consistently seeing 1.8-2.4MB/s max on a line that is supposedly rated at up to 3MB. You don't have to be an engineer to realize that performance has been de-tuned so that they can sell my bandwidth to someone else. Also, the price just keeps going up year after year without notice. It now costs me $35/month to be treated this shabbily. If I could obtain high-speed service from any other provider, I would drop AT&T/SBC in a minute.

Re: Avoid AT&T/SBC DSL

What does a download come in at? usually the way dsl sync rates and throughput rates work are a bit different. sync can be 3008/512 but throughput is typically about 75-85% of that. For kbps it should hit right at about 287k-300k per sec down stream and for upstream it should be about .43 to .5kb/s upstream.

If you are getting in that range, that's all the pro tier (up to 3mbps) gets you, as well as everyone else that orders it.

Speakeasy Speed Tests from/to 3 different cities
Downstream from Speakeasy comes in consistently at 2.4 Mbps or less any time of day. (My original post should have said 2.4 Mbps, equivalent to about 300 KBps.) But a plot of bandwidth over time shows a nearly flat plateau. There are no spikes of even 1 second higher than 2.4 Mbps. The difference can't all be packet overhead, error rates, etc. AT&T used to deliver 2.7Mbps+ (for less cost) on the same line. I maintain that this looks like de-tuning.

Did you maybe come from bellsouth to the midwest? I know bellsouth did some different things back in the day with provisioning.

Typically on the download side I see quite a few get around 287-300 consistently.

As far as I know PPPoE was as least 15% off the top. Plus another thing that speed test doesn't consider is if the end user is less than 3008/512 max sync. If they are, that report would be lower in respect.

On 11/17/2010, our office was suddenly unable to send email, and our website disappeared as well. A call to tech support resolved that. Supposedly "someone" had deleted our entire account. Since I am the only one with a password and the knowledge to access the account and it was not me, we assumed it was an AT&T error. Annoying, but not fatal as it was repaired promptly.

On 3/30/2011, the same thing happened again. A tech support person restored the website but we are still unable to send email. This is truly critical for our business as all invitations to bid are received and responded to via email and all deliverables are sent by email. I set up an emergency account for us with gmail but it was of limited effectiveness as many of our clients automatically block gmail accounts and, in addition, deliverables must be sent from the email address of record.

Yesterday we were told that it would be "a couple hours" before email service was restored. Then I was told that the domain had expired and was not automatically renewed as it has been for the past several years. I was told to send a request for renewal via email from the email account of record, and had to remind the tech of the reason for the call to tech support. It has now been 22 hours without email service. We have some extremely unhappy clients and our cash flow will have slowed to a halt.

It is time to change providers.

I honestly think it's a webhosting review

And truthfully it's just resold Yahoo webhosting services. Typically AT&T would have to refer the problem to yahoo.

I've had DSL service with AT&T (in its many names along the way) for about a decade, give or take a year or two. I used to love them completely. Now I can't wait until I can get a real future-minded option (c'mon FiOS). These caps are a joke.

  • "Worth the lower price if you can get the promised speed"

I already have Comcast HSI but the kids dominate it with 2 Xbox's so i ordered DSL for myself and have been very pleased. I ordered the Elite tier (6mbps) and get just over 6 on a continuous basis according to speedtest.net Watching video, surfing the net, all work at the exact same speed as Comcast HSI. The only "slowness" I've noticed is when I download a huge file, like an image of Ubuntu (Linux OS).

It would seem to me that Comcast's only advantage is if you are using a lot of computing devices like multiple computers and/or multiple gaming platforms which can share Comcasts larger bandwidth. If you are just using 1 Xbox and a couple of computers, AT&T DSL works perfectly fine at half the cost of Comcast.

·AT&T DSL Service
Company is sending new dsl modem (Motorola 2210 to replace Siemens 4100b), but insists that the problem is my residental router. The service works well intermittently.

The new modem is expected to arrive next week, and I will also purchase a new router (for which I have some other additional uses) then too. This will either solve my problems, or demonstrate that the problems lie inside AT&T's systems. During this time, their support has been engaged and friendly.

At this point (shown in attached image), the service's upload performance remains what it "normally" has been, while the download speed has deteriorated to barely above dialup speeds. (My slowest dowmload speed test showed only 2Kb).

This problem comes after approximately four years of very satisfactory service, at a reasonable price. AT&T's support staff continues to claim that there are no problems or outages on their side and that my line quality is "good", a fact that my own tests confirm. My hope is that this crisis will be resolved, but if not, I will need to find an alternative.

Check your wiring.

If the new modem doesn't fix it then your phone line is probably bad or someone has damaged the line inside your house or connected something else to the line. The phone co. is responsible for the outside line up to the side of your house but you need to take care of the line inside. You should check all over the house and make sure nothing else is plugged into any of the jacks. Try disconnecting everything except the DSL modem and see if that makes any difference in the speed. As a last check try running a new line from the point where the phone company's line connects outside directly to your DSL modem and try it that way. If it gets better you need to fix or replace your inside wiring. If it doesn't get any better the problem is with the phone co. and you will need to put in a service call to have them fix their outside lines. Note that you don't need to be home for that as long as they can get inside your yard to get access to their connections outside and they should be able to take care of it from that point out to the street.

AT&T DSL deterioration

I had almost the exact same experience. Good service for 3 years; recent dramatic deterioration. AT&T acknowledges its their lines and the only fix is to move up to U-Verse--which is considerably more expensive.

same Problem

I experienced the same problem. Because the CSR (customer service rep) promised me the new rate, failing to tell me that was the DSL rate in the bundle, they honored the rate for us for a year.

here's another one that just spikes my blood pressure levels... I moved my companies DSL over to At&t 3 weeks ago. Rob - tec support told me my modem was broken and told to buy a new one. Bought a new one, still didn't fix the problem. Called Tec support back Enrique told me, At&t would reimburse me, i told him i went to best buy to the modem, he said, "no problem I'm documenting it, we'll pay for the new modem since it was our mistake to tell you to go buy a new modem. he gave me a number to billing that would take care of my case. i called them the next day, after 6 transfers to different departments, 4 of them as a result of asking for a supervisor, finally got Clinton. He said, "we don't reimburse other companies equipment, but I see the notes where Enrique told you that, and we'll have him written up for telling you that."

At&t, I'm so very disappointed in your lack of customer support, you will though... when the competition starts out serving you, and you'll have to care about the quality of you're product.

I'm dedicated to speeding the process up, and will share my story of how disappointed, and deceptive your product is.
