I have never had cable HSI so I have nothing to compare to, but I like the DSL I have. It works for what I need at home.
02.14.11 I still only have access to 1.5 and would love an opportunity to upgrade, but AT&T must not want anymore of my money. AND no I do not live in the sticks. I am right off the Interstate. Anyway, still works for what I need at home.

I've been an ATT customer for years but now i'm considering letting them go. my speeds are terrible, i have intermittent drop outs and i can't stream a movie to sae my life. i've had tech after tech come out with no resolution. i think no one knows what to do. some days the connection is just plain unusable. i provide remote support to some of my customers and you can imagine the embarrassing moment when i have to call and tell them "ohh my connection died". come on ATT WTF!!!

The only choice I have beside satellite is ATT DSL. I am using a Speedstream 4100 and a Linksys WRT160N. I provided all my own equipment and performed a complete self install. My service is supposed to be up to 3 megabyte download for $29.99 monthly. At first the modem that I had was used in a different setup and ATT tech support help me get it working. I was very happy with there crisp service they gave me.

Comcast D/L was 8MB vs ATT @ 5.5 - sounds de minimus but perceived as much faster

$20 per month- (12 month contract)
about 1 days AT&T "Good speed stable cheap" "rain sometimes causes faults but it hardly ever rains (southern ca)" "Very Good"

Being with pacbell dsl since 1996(originally San francisco bay area). Then moved to ramona ca. (in the sticks) where i'm on the fringe of distance from central office. Very occasionally problems with bad weather. Put in a trouble ticket online , fixed within a day. Service has been excellent. Nothing to complain about except I wish I could get a faster line, but I'm lucky to have what I have. (cable not available). Price special of $20/mth for 12mth. Overall very happy.

This is about ordering U-verse / DSL service on AT&T The setup is aweful and requires an enire day for installation. Tech support and billing support are worthless. No one person can help you, and usually it took 7 transfers to get to the right person to help you with your issue. Then in my case, the person ended up no help. Billing had hidden charges. Cancellation was my choice, which still took 7 transfers and 2 hours (not exaggerated). Then a month later, I found that ATT&T continued to bill me and had to repeat the entire process again.

I considered cable, but was not happy with their availability and the phone service is always on so I went with DSL. I chose the High Speed 6Mb service and have always had fairly stable service.
I originally had purchased a Westell 6100 modem from Bellsouth, but soon replaced it with Netopia 3346 and then a Netopia 3347 for WIFI.
I soon learned that AT&T tech support was not the answer so I have been hanging around dslreports to obtain my own answers.
I would like higher speeds.

 | | AT&T is slow and tech support is useless I have spent over a year trying to resolve my slow internet access. The cable in our small town provides download speeds of over 3.0. AT&T provides 0.39.
Tech support is useless. They offer the canned responses of how they understand my frustration, don't worry, and more of the same. The last live chat person ended the session because he/she insisted I was on a wireless connection and could not help me when I swore over and over that I was wired (which I was, truly!).
At my first opportunity, I am canceling and signing up with my local cable company, SuddenLink. And will probably switch my land line as well just because I'm so mad. I will NEVER recommend AT&T | |
| | dlang @comcastbusiness.net | Re: AT&T is slow and tech support is useless I thought I would save little money and drop comcast cable modem and get AT&T DSL 1.5Mb. What a nightmare!!!! my speeds were at best 700kb, it worked for a month, then they cut off my service for non-payment, even though I was on the Auto-pay system and my account showed I had paid and no amount was due. I called on a Saturday at 8:30am and had them check the line because at that point I thought it was a line issue. I never heard back. I called at 4:30pm same day and was told all offices were closed. the tech finally shows up on TUESDAY!!! and checks the line. that's when he calls and I find out they had cut me off!!! THEY COULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT SATURDAY AM AND I WOULD HAVE TOLD THEM TO CHECK THERE RECORDS TO SEE THAT I INDEED HAD PAYED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO STICK ME WITH A $150 CANCELLATION FEE!!!!!!!!. TOTAL INCOMPETENCE AND GREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! INFERIOR PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | |

about 27 days "Great pricing ($20/mo for 12 mos at 6016/768" "Installation didn't happen, over and over and over again!" "I felt as though I was being lied to by the staff as I waited for install."

Original install date was 8pm on Dec 21. Until 4pm on the 21st I was assured all was in order. Nothing! On the 22nd, no explanation but promised by 8pm on the 24th. Until 7pm on the 24th, assured all was in order. NOTHING! On the 26th, technical issue blamed. No solution. On the 28th a technician was scheduled to visit on Jan 9 (8am-12noon). On Jan 9, technician called at 4:30pm to say there was never an order to install DSL on the line - and that I should call ATT sales dept to place an order. He did not physically visit. How bizarre that DSL service became available at 7pm that same evening!!! When they said it would happen, it didn't but when they said it wouldn't happen, it did!

$80 per month AT&T "no known traffic shaping, when it works, its awesome." "AT&T oversells their bandwidth. bad copper in the area" "It is what it is--DSL service that can be a blessing or a headache."
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)
|
AT&T DSL is pretty much the primary DSL service in Tuolumne county at the time of this review. Cable internet is not available yet.
Other than generally bad copper in the area and limited fiber, if you're in an area where you can get DSL, its the best bang for the buck.
the main issue is at&t oversells their bandwidth in the area (stockton) so numerous customers complain about slow speeds during prime-time hours. eventually At&T will upgrade their backbone, or so I hope.
At&T tech support is decent, tier 1 can be a headache if you've already troubleshooted the issue, tier 2 can be awesome if you know what you need ahead of time.
*note the 80$ monthly includes dial-tone and basic long distance plan. the elite dsl package is about 30-35 bucks.
