I have had AT&T/Yahoo DSL for about 6 months now. I ordered it online because there was a monthly discount if you did. I went originally with the pro package ($24.99 a month) which was 1.5-3.0 Mbps down and up to 512 Kbps upstream. Just recently upgraded to the elite package 3.0-6.0 Mbps down and up to 768 upstream. I have not had one bit of downtime and speeds on either tier were pretty consistent. The upload speed increase is nice. Especially when uploading 1.5-2.7 meg pictures to my website. So all in all I will say my experience with Pacific Telephone/Pacbell/SBC/AT&T and whatever name is next has been great.

I ordered the Pro package(3008/512) on 04/19/07. Was given a due date of 04/24/07. Received install package on 04/24/07. I installed modem and filters as described in the instructions but the DSL light would not turn solid green. I gave up and figured I would try again the next night. Came home 04/25/07 and DSL modem met me with a Green light WOOHOO! I completed the install and everything worked as promised. I have not had to call for tech support yet but know that they are based overseas from other reviews so that's why I checked them down on that. PPPoE is no big deal due to the fact that the 4100 modem handles it. Speeds are testing around 2500/350 so i am quite happy.

    Update 05/06/08:

DSL has been flawless for over a year now. Thinking about upgrading to the Elite package(6016/768).

    Update 11/03/09

I ordered the Elite package a few months ago. Service is still flawless other than one outage when there was some power outages in the area. Speeds are as advertised and price is still the best deal around for the speed.

    Rather unfair...

..that you ding'd Tech Support. When I got ATT's Basic service last October('06), I had a problem with the install CD. Called Tech.Support(via cell phone) and dealt with a guy named Lamar, who was based in Los Angeles. He got me up and runn'in in 15 minutes. Other reviews aren't YOUR review.
Now, I have Pro-switched to that service on 12/21 via phone call to Customer Service. On the morning of 12/23, I was ramped up to my current 2.6/435 speed. All in all, ATT's customer support ranks 100% with me. And I haven't used the online forum here-but from what I've read, those folks there help as best as they can, and they do it for free. Kudos to you guys!!!

It's been 5 years... U-Verse not available, RT is not anywhere close and I'm too far away from LO for better speeds - so I've been stuck with 1.2M DL / 250K UL (on a good day) for 5 years so far.

Other then than, tech support here on dslreports.com is great, sales support/install via dslreports.com was OK as well (5 years ago) - general customer support (via phone) is still clueless and surprised that I HAVE DSL at all - their DB has my address listed as unavailable for DSL...

    10/31/2009 Update:
I had no DSL whole last week due to issues with outside line.
4 tech support guys have been trying to fix the line whole last week without any luck.
by 7th day I gave up - canceled DSL & Phone from AT&T and ordered CDV & HSI from Comcast - will see how that goes.

I've had AT&T DSL for several years; the price started out around $15 for 1.5MB, then I went to 3.0MB, and now paying $30/mo. I could get 10MB for $30 at Comcast, but just don't have the desire to switch. AT&T DSL is very reliable, and the one time I called for support they were all over it.

Overall I'm happy with it, although I believe I could do better (cost-wise) going to cable.

Switched from TWC a year back because TWC would crawl at times and just wanted to bundle my services with at&t (in a former BellSouth Area). I've had to have trucks dispatched to house twice due to static. This comes across my POTS line and so i can detect it and check for static at the Network Interface. Clears up and hopefully this time the line will stay clear. House built in 1953 and older neighborhood so not sure if that has something to do with it but they replace the box outside the house when DSL installed as i didn't even have a landline. Getting 2 - 2.5 downloads, fastest was a 2.9. Tech says that is probably the best i will do, i was just able to upgrade from standard to the 3.0 package but wonder if it is worth it for .5 Mbs? Still can not get the Ultra service here and awaiting Uverse to be available.

Will update the consistency now that tech fixed issue on equipment side at the VRAD.

Update - 10/26/2009 - Had an issue where I had to call tech support about creating a PTR record for my static IP. First level tech support was able to direct me to 2nd tier support where they could help me. A few emails later, my PTR was setup and smooth sailing.

    08/16/2008

1st level tech support is VERY BAD. If you demand 2nd tier support, your problem will be fixed in a timely manner by someone who knows what he's/she's doing. If a truck roll is necessary, its usually fixed quickly because it might be "plant related". Been a DSL customer since 2002 (when it was SBC) and it has only failed twice (the first time in 2004 for about an hour, the last being in 2007 for 2 hours, and didn't have to call tech support.)

AT&T is a real pain when it comes to upgrading ones service. For instance, if you want from dynamic IP to a static IP, they "claim" a truck roll is necessary. This is the ONLY provider that does such a thing...Quite possibly they use this tactic to get the $200 for a truck roll. I've never needed a "truck roll" to upgrade from dynamic to static from any other provider, except AT&T. Word to the folks at AT&T, make it simple for people to upgrade and DO NOT INSIST on a 'truck roll" for something that can be done in the C.O. or elsewhere. However, after 55 minutes (and 3 people) later, I upgraded to Elite service.

Now on to a bad note...Its my understanding that AT&T is "toying" with the idea of "usage-based pricing". Which is another word for CAPPING YOUR USAGE (or a money grab, call it what you like) ! Word to the wise (from an ex-Verizon employee), this is not a good thing and if AT&T implements this, trust me, MANY people will disconnect their service, and I'll be the first to do so.

However, I'll keep an open mind on this and see what develops.

    Terrible service

Trying to get in touch with somebody in AT&T technical support is deadly and finally when I get to talk to a human being it happens to be someone from the Philippines, so speaking English as a second language with a heavy accent the same than myself.

As a result I get nothing except to be infuriated since we don't understand each other.

    Truckroll and byte billing

If AT&T goes to usage billing, I will defiantly disconnect my service from them.

Good review though, and, I do not know why they charge for truck roll with a static IP subscription... makes no sense at all.

    Re: Truckroll and byte billing

Guess I was a little mis-understood (or was a bit unclear). AT&T tried to charge me for a "truck roll", but I called their bluff when they found out I was an ex-tech. I was attempting to say (and that's my fault that I didn't) that if AT&T insists on a truck roll, don't believe it. Of course, they didn't (and couldn't) charge me for the roll, but its something they might try. They seem to be trying everything else !

My apologies for not being clear. Totally my fault on that one !

    ATT gone from here!

To start off, ATT (SBC) has been in this house since it was built in the 1950's. Not no more!

I have been with ATT first off, dial up and then DSL. The dial up was off line ( due to line problems )almost as much at it was on. Every time they would come out they would say, but sir, its your phone line and we cant touch it, thats ATT's problem. But your ATT, yes but not the phone part. So you get them out and they tell you it is your Modem and they cant work there either. Now that I have had DSL for 15 months, I guess I can say they are worthless.

The trouble shooters say its your phone line, and the phone guys say its your DSL. SSDD, The trouble shooters had me disconnect my DSL and the static was still so bad you couldn't make a phone call. When the line guys show up they say, you should get rid of your DSL its causing problems for my phone system.

Best part was when I told the guy that it was also ATT, and his follow up was thats why he has cable!

AT&T and SBC is the same company

SBC bought AT&T so AT&T is not a worse/different company than SBC.

Static DSL is considered as business plan (at least not residential) and it requires a professional install (no DIY install), hence the truck roll.

People need static IP for various reasons and should pay more, but simply because your "OFFICE" is at home does not imply you can have "business service" at the expense of "residential price".

Re: AT&T and SBC is the same company

I don't know where your "myth" comes from, but it is a myth.

First, if you already have a dynamic IP service, then upgrading to a static DOES NOT require a truck roll. Only if you need additional wiring (or problems in the wiring) does a truck roll become necessary !

Second, in most areas, you can get DSL for the first time, and not need a truck roll. AT&T (and most competent carriers) can provision the line within days. In the meantime, they send you the modem, and you can do the rest. Again, if you need some wiring done, then a truck roll is needed.

Third, I have a static IP at home, so if I have to pay "business rates", then so be it.

Of course AT&T tried the "truck roll" with me, and I KNEW it wasn't necessary. They did all of the circuit work in the CO and elsewhere, and I rebooted by modem. Works just fine for me !

Yes, we know AT&T & SBC are the same...PacBell (the old Pacific Telesys) Ameritech (Illinois & Michigan Bell), BellSouth (the old South Central Bell)...They're all one big happy family !

    Yes, AT&T sucks

Just like SBC and before that SNET. I have had nothing but problems with my connection...they cant fix it. Unfortunately, I have NO cable so I am STUCK with AT&T.

If I could switch I would....

DONT even get AT&T if you have the option of someone else to give you internet connection!!!!

    Re: Yes, AT&T sucks

The connection is just fine, just their tech support really sucks. Most of the 1st level folks consider English as a 2nd language because most of them you just can't understand.

I've had AT&T since 2002 (when it was SBC-Southwest). Had cable before that and it was a real nightmare. Couldn't keep a connection for more than a day and on top of that, they couldn't (or wouldn't) fix my problems, hence I went to SBC.

After today, I'm looking at DSL Extreme. They come recommended by some friends of mine in California & Oklahoma.

Bottom line (at least down here), the connection is good, just don't call tech support... I'd rather call my ex-wife...less pain.

Agreed, DNSguy See Profile has been doing the ones in the direct forum as of late. I think rDNS requests and PTR are on the same subject or mean closely to the same thing?

Truthfully I am not completely fluent in DNS (that's what he's here for!) but I think they are.

"Ordered landline & DSL on Thursday, Installed on Tuesday"
"Wish Up speed was better"
"It just works"

This is a business installation done by AT&T techs. The DSL tech had me up & running in about an hour. The line & modem were tweaked after he installed a splitter and ran a new home run. No waiting for the modem to learn and ramp up. Of course I do have an advantage of having th RT box just across the parking lot. RT to modem is about 1000 feet. The install was free as I ordered the DSL (Pro package w/5-static IP's) with a new land-line. The deal included a Motorola modem/Wireless router/4-port switch (re-branded Netopia 3000). My only complaint is the port speed (10/100). I would have preferred a gigabit switch. I am looking to get a separate gigabit switch once the cabling is completed & just plug the modem/router/sw into it. [ I had AT&T DSL ( PacBell then) in the past and had the usual problems (being ~12,000 feet from the CO) ]. So far (2 months) this 'business' class (& cost) has caused me no difficulties at all. Therefore no experience with tech support. Looked at the local cable (TW) business option, but I prefer a hard land-line to the vulgarities of VoIP over cable.

I have had this service sine 1999 back when it was pacific bell.I had pacific bell dial up before DSL was widely available in the Santa Rosa area. I still have the original Alcatel speed touch home modem they gave me back then. I guess that maybe it is a dinosaur but it works with out notice. The few times I have had a problem the service provider fixed it right away. What can I say unless something changes I am leaving well enough alone. I would recommend this to my friends. Update 1-18-2008 I had a very strange issue where my service would be reduced to 1.5 mega bit download about every 25 days or so. The tech I spoke with was fantastic.he had a service person visit my local fiber location and switch me onto a different circuit. All this on New years day and within 2 hours of my call. He called me back two times to let me know what they were doing about my problem. What can I say all this for a customer paying $24.00 a month. Thank you ATT

    Update 8-2-2008

Nothing new on this front. As usual everything works just as advertised. I did get a better deal on my phone service sine I never use it a sales rep suggested I remove all the features and now it costs $5.00 a month. I was going to have them remove the number completely and just have naked DSL but for 5 dollars I figure i might as well have a hard line available. Now if only my comcast cable tv was this reliable (LOL)

    Update 3-18-2009

I dumped comcast for Dish network. My experience with dish has been great for the last 3 months. Their DVR is really top notch and the programing is comparable for less money. Att still has good service although I am back to calling them every month to rebuild my account in the router. Absolutely no one can figure out why my service gets provisioned to the basic speed every month when I pay for the elite service. To their credit they do see the problem is persistent and just perform the repair. If any one knows why this might happen please let me know!!

    Update 10-21-2009

Still using the Acatell speed touch home modem Att gave me in 1999. Service is reliable and consistent.
