I considered BlueSky and Harris satellite service while we worked on getting ATT DSL service working here. Harris (Dish Net) offered only dialup upload speeds--no way. BlueSky was ~80 per month. Since DSL was offered at $29.95 and up, we persevered through the incredibly poor service calls, phone support, and slow installation. We got basic service after ~3 weeks of waiting because we asked for Pro DSL (3Mbps down, 512kbps up) but they said our line wouldn't support it. So after suffering through this for a couple of weeks, I called their new accounts people and asked for an upgrade. "Not possible with your location" Then I insisted that they try it, offering to pay for a whole month at Pro rates even if it didn't work. Finally after 3 calls I got to someone in Tier 3 who would let me TRY. They made the change to their servers and we are now at 2.6Mbps down/450kbps up. This is pretty good, so we are sticking with it for now, but I am trying to squeeze more out of the Bitsurfer 2210 modem with tweaks.

When I first signed up for AT&T dry DSL, the service was $29 a month for a 3mbit line. That line might've been a little slow for 2007, but it was dead reliable (I believe it only went down once or twice over the time I had it), and the price was really unbeatable.
Then the prices changed! Mine seemed to hang at $34 for a while, even though talk of a $40 service plan was looming. Meanwhile, I found out AT&T U-Verse was selling 6mbit standalone service for $35 a month.. hrmm!
After a failed U-Verse install (too far from the vrad), I was without internet for 10 days, the soonest possible time AT&T could schedule an install for the DSL (again, ergh). When that was done, I had already had cable internet started up.. I called to inquire about the install (I much preferred the DSL and crappy service to a really expensive cable bill), and here's what happened:
Despite being a loyal customer for ages, and trying to get their new service - despite having no internet for 10 days with them, they were going to charge me $44 a month for 1.5mbit service.
$44!!!! WTF?! That's ridiculous!
I canceled that all the way back in may and they still can't make up their mind whether they owe me money or I owe them money!

We started out with the AT&T telephone and DSL package. We eventually dropped the phone plan and went strictly with DSL. Within a few weeks, our DSL service began to disconnect once a week. Now it's a daily or multi-daily occurrence. This is extrememly frustrating since we now have VOIP phone service. Don't get this service before you ask around.

Let us understand one thing. SBC owns AT&T. The parent company is SBC, it only uses the AT&T name for recognition. Back when the REAL phone company, Bell South was the owner, they ran things in a very different way. When SBC acquired BellSouth and AT&T, speed and high production was the #1 goal. The quality dropped and the techs were forced to speed things up and spend less time with the customers, who buy our product and are responsible for our salaries. This is a wrong move. When we first kicked off ADSL, we were told to give the customers 100% attention and care in order to keep them happy. That was when BellSouth was our owners. The first group of ADSL techs were highly trained and really did take pride in this new product. We were installation techs that were computer savvy and BellSouth invested lots of money to train us and then separate us into a crew that only handled ADSL. This approach worked fine and we were not under any speed and production pressures. "What ever it takes.........make the customer happy and fix the problem. Period. But that mindset was under the BellSouth way of thinking.
Sadly things changed and the phone company decided to let every installation service tech do the ADSL installs and repairs. Bad move, really bad move. Why? These guys are on a production speed clock and really don't have time to give the customer the time and respect of a little personal help they need to understand how to use the product. There are so many little things that must be done correctly for a DSL line to hit on all cylinders. If not done correctly, the customer will never be happy with ADSL.
I am so sorry this has happened.

I ordered service May 12th 2009, and I was told my install date was the 18th but I had sync and connected/signed up the day before, May 17th. The woman who took my order over the phone was very courteous and helped me as best she could. Her level of customer service impressed me so much I asked to speak to her manager so I could let them know I got 5 star service. I got the 768 down/384 up basic direct package with a 12 month contract for 19.95 a month which was the max I could get being so far from the CO. I had a Motorola 2210 modem I used for DSL through my previous provider so I didn't need to order one but If I could do it over again I would have ordered the 2Wire gateway since the 2wire is supposed to be better for marginal lines like mine. Started on fast path but was switched to interleaved since I was having CRC errors and packet loss due to 63db line attenuation from being 15Kft from the CO. The man who helped me (a tier 2 tech I think) treated me like I had a brain unlike the Tier 1 who just went over the "script". Since the switch to interleaved I have not noticed much packet loss or sync issues to this date.

"Installation was relatively painless"
"Better than Suddenlink Cable where we live"
| |
Our DSL has been great so far. We have had it for a month or so now, I wanted to wait until we had some experience with it before I reviewed it. It was real easy to install (I installed it myself). We are getting a little over 6 MB down and exactly 768KB up to the modem. That is exactly what we pay for. I only had one problem that really couldn't be helped by AT&T. Our landlord ordered the internet and had a gateway sent to us instead of a modem. Everybody in the house is a gamer and we all have to forward certain ports. So we had a small issue getting it switched to a modem. This was partly my fault though, so I wouldn't hold it against them.
For where we live, it was either this or Suddenlink. This is way better. I never have any fluctuations in my internet. It is always the same. With SL cable we were always going up and down in our speeds. This was probably due to over-saturation I'm sure (6 people on my block on the same feed we were using).
Now I don't have to wait until everybody in the neighborhood goes to bed to get the speeds the internet company told me I would get.
