Update - August 26, 2008:
I am still using Air Canopy, and I am still VERY satisfied with the service. I have been with them just over 4 years now, and there have only been 2 instances of downtime. Both times, the system was back up and running within a day. When I called customer service on those occasions, they were very informative and friendly. I even got a call back later that same day to tell me that the problem had been corrected, and to be sure I was up and running! My download speed is: 3449 kbps and my upload speed is: 1224 kbps. I am still on the Power User plan, and my rate has not increased from $59.99 ($62.83 after taxes) which is what it was 4 years ago when I signed up. I highly recommend Air Canopy to anyone who cannot get DSL, or finds DSL too slow for their tastes.
Original Review:
My first phone call to Air Canopy was for information gathering, and to set up a site test, which was scheduled for the following week. The site test itself took about three minutes, and involved a tech climbing on my roof. Next step, schedule the install. It is going to be another week, but they assure me that I am eligible for the service. I ordered the Power User package for $59.95 a month.
On the day of the install, I cleared my entire afternoon, thinking this was going to be a long process. The two techs Air Canopy sent to my house were not only very polite and professional, but they took the time to answer all my questions. Within 45 minutes, my connection was up and running! The first thing I did was download a big file, and I was very impressed with the connection speed.
A few days later I installed VoIP (from a provider other than Air Canopy) and found out that my connection was dropping packets. I called Air Canopy on the Friday before a holiday weekend, and got voice mail. Assuming they had closed early for the holiday weekend, I left a message. About an hour later, an Air Canopy tech called me back, and he had already tested my connection and knew exactly what the problem was. He scheduled a realignment which went off without a hitch. My VoIP is now working properly, and my connection is better than ever!
Air Canopy may require a contract, which I don't care for, but they seem to genuinely care about their customers. The service itself is great, the speed is amazing, and there has been no downtime to date. All in all - I am very impressed!

Had this service for 2 months now and its been for the most part, pretty good. At first, 2 weeks into first having the service installed, I lost the signal sporadically with the dish. It would come in and go when it wanted for a moment at a time, making using the service impossible. 3 tech visits, 2 new dishes and some misunderstandings later, I got the service fixed and a week prorated back to me ($10). I like the service overall, but I do not care too much for the techs (cept a few) nor do I like the service just "going away" then coming back miraculously for no apparent reason...it doesn't happen often, but it does. Also, when I first signed up for service, no where on their website did it state a 1 year contract was required by all services, I found this out on the install date, pretty lame.

I have been a customer of AC since they came into Ferris Texas. At first, the service was great, customer service was spot on! Over the last year, it's excuse after excuse for spotty connections. I haven't moved, the cables haven't moved, they claim the signal from my antenna is solid from "their end", another of my fav excuses is, "Oh, there's someone on your tower with a virus". Seeing a trend here? I pay for 3mb d/l and 1.5 up. What I get on a GOOD day is half that, on a bad day, close to dial up. When it takes twenty minutes to upload 5mb in pics for an insurance claim, that ludicrous. Bottom line is, they are really the only option in our town for broadband, so it's put up with the nonsense or go back to dial up....but they fail to realize, they won't always be the only real option. In closing, if you live in Ferris, and need BB, you really don't have many options. ********* 02-23-2007 Aircanopy has finally admitted they have a problem in Ferris and offered a two month credit on my bill. They state they will keep me appraised of when the issues will be corrected. Should that actually occur- I'll be more than happy to report those results here.
06/04/2007 As promised, aircanopy has a new tower for Ferris and surrounding area. My speeds have picked up considerably and I would like to thank Mr. Z for keeping me in the loop during this ordeal. They are still working the kinks out of the new tower but I can honestly say I'm much happier now.

| Agree Have been a customer since nearly the beginning. First 2yrs were outstanding. Couldn't be happier. The last 12mos have been the pits.
Paying $62 and attaining an whopping download speed of 20-25k over the last 60-days. Unfortunately, it is the only provider in town.
I, too, am eagerly look forward to another provider being available soon. My neighbor across the street has AT&T. I am awaiting his first 30 days of experience. If it's half has good and half as fast as my "Power-User Account" with AirCanopy, I certainly won't mind paying the cheaper price.

| Check with Tech Support You should check with their Tech Support group about the speeds. I've always had good luck with them helping me out. If the 1st-line tech support guys don't give you good answers, ask to speak with one of the leads - they seem to have a good handle on what's going on. | |

| Re: Check with Tech Support Hmmm, I check with customer support routinely- in fact, I have their number on my cellphone. As far as any solutions:unplug and plug back in your router, unplug and plug back in your voip box, reboot your computer, oh there's another user on your tower with a virus and we just shut him down-it should be better now, we just checked your config from here and its perfect.
Frankly, they fall short of the mark- and my mark isnt that hard to make: Give me what I pay for and I'll be a happy camper.

@aircanopy.net
| Four years... What can I say? I'm so deeply disappointed in AirCanopy's service over the last 18mos that I'm seriously considering 'shotgunning" modems. I've been told everything from trees blocking my signal (them, "we'll move you to the other tower." Me, "when?" them, "don't know."), to another user with a virus, to "packet/data storms" (guys, that only happens on hubs unless you have seriously misconfig'd your switches). Oopsie...did I forget to tell their TechSup that I'm a 20yr veteran of I.T. support, administration and management???
Few things make an organization look more foolish and ignorant (remember igrnorant means "not knowing" or "unlearned") than having your employees try to blow smoke up your customer's rear end when the customer has more years experience than the entire company combine.
Yes. Can you tell I'm an extremely unhappy, disatified customer that's been with the service since 2002? I don't know what happen since 2006 but whatever it is has caused me to want to gargle glass than recommend this ISP.

| Re: Four years... While there have been issues on our towers, there is seldom any deployment that does not have issues and learning curves. The packet storm / virus issue was traced and solved MONTHS ago and was not a mis-configured switch. As a veteran of IT management you know how unknown issues can be mis-diagnosed and you cannot honestly say that you have not made similar mistakes. We freely admit that issues are there and that some technologies do not work like they once did for varying reasons. But as a 20 year veteran network engineer myself I am confident that moving forward, service levels will improve as we are constantly adding capacity and infrastructure to support our customer base. The Ovilla tower is currently subject to interference from other equipment and we are working to resolve it with the city. That process can be time consuming so we have moved a number of users to other equipment in the area and they are receiving quality service. This is particularly true of the 900 Mhz that is problematic in that area. Rather than anonymously gargle glass, give us a call and see if there is an update. If you are a customer from that long ago, then you likely know me and you already know that we will do everything possible to resolve your issue as we always have in the past. Good things are coming and services will improve as the local market changes and we resolve issues that have been identified. BTW, our combined IT experience in Consulting and Enterprise services is well over sixty years. No smoke. | |
| I hate aircrappy
@aircanopy.net
| aircrappy sucks Yeah the only bad thing is that you are deploying shit like every week, which means a new learning curve/downed or shitty service for a week. I am sitting here right now disconnecting every minute posting bashes on every forum i can think of. This service is pathetic, and they only fucking answer anybody gives is that there is nothing else around. Thats nice and dandy to say now till a person with a brain comes around and all customers will be gone. Dont even begin to brag about 60 years of tech support, what did they do spend all their years telling people to reboot their computers, and modems. Too bad the whole issues on why they have to be rebooted every other day never gets resolved.
If you have absolutely any other option for broadband in your area go with it. Even the slowest possible dsl will at least be up more then this shit. I have a friend that was on this for awhile, and went to yahoo dsl due to disconnects all the time, and hasnt been happier.

I've had service for about 3 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I ordered the Power User plan which is 2-3Mbps download and 768kbps-1Mbps upload. The service is rarely down and when it has been down its only been for a couple of hours. I've had good luck with Tech Support although I sometimes have to leave voicemails - they do seem to return my calls fairly quickly (within a couple of hours -sometimes next-day over the weekend). I know I'm talking with local people (not somebody overseas) so I'm OK with them calling me back. My speed is almost always at or above the advertised estimates. Sometimes on the upload it drops down lower than I'd like but it usually bounces back.
It took about 2 weeks to get installed when I first signed up and from what I've heard from others it still takes that long - they seem to be booked-out with new people signing-up.

I have had service with them for a year and 4 month. Out of this time, the first 6 months was great. Now, my speeds range anywhere from 25k to 1500k usually in the 200 range on a good day. When I call support I get empty promises and excuses about viruses on someone elses connection draining bandwidth. Or, my favorite, 900 Mhz is getting noisy in your area. I can't even get them to return emails. They will return calls and tell you that everything looks good now. Bull!!! Get DSL or cable if at all possible. Thank goodness AT&T has it now.
P.S. My neighbor has line of sight and says it's good. I'm going to talk him into changing and everyone else I know just for their lack of real support.

Speed test showed over 4mb down and 1.4mb up. I have had service for over 2yrs. and have lost my connection less than a dozen times. Most outage's lasting a few hours. Before AC I used dial up (18kbps) ISDN, DirecPC and then Direcway. If, like me your in a rural area with no DSL, AirCanopy is worth a look.

I have had this service for about 10 months now. The first 8 months were great, since I didn't need any support. Now for about the last 6 weeks I have been having horrible speeds, high latency and packet loss about half the time. I have called customer service about 6 times and no one has come out to fix it. One day they'll tell me it looks good from "our" end and have me do the traditional "unplug the router" now try plugging the cable directly into your computer. Blah blah. I am not a computer idiot. Then I call back again and the next guy tells me it looks like a cable and they will call me in the morning to set up a time to come out. It's not a cable, unless it's outside the house. The cables in the house are never moved or touched. I've run the line quality test and on their server my packet loss is 5% and pings are from 50ms to 7000ms. No one has called and I'm still paying for service. I'm about to give up and switch to texas air net. If you can get anything but wireless do it.

I wanted so much to use this service since SBC won't get off their backsides and put DSL in Red Oak.Unfortunately I have too many trees around.So if you have trees don't get your hopes up,I was so disappointed. I was told it would take a 30 -40 foot tower to get access.Is this feasible.I mean would the tower be expensive to install and make it sturdy.How much does wind affect the signal if the pole moves?Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
**********************************Update***************************************************** I was not trying to scare anyone off.What gave you that idea.I was merely stating facts about my experience and the fact that I was disappointed that I could not get your service.I made no derrogatory statrment about the company.
Why aren't you trying to answer my questions?They are valid questions.

The first few months that I had the service they were great. Since 12/2004 the service has been going down hill. Service works 90% of the time but you will not get much help if it goes out. After speaking with an employee in the support department he told me that they had a known issue with one of the towers and it would be fixed soon. Biggest problem with this is that he did not know who I was to even know what tower I was on! After I gave him my name he said that was the tower I was on and that service would be fixed shortly. My service finally gave out that night and I had to fight with them to get someone to come out and check. Turned out that my receiver had moved. I cancelled service when I was moving in July 2005. They told me they would have a site test done on Thursday to make sure my new address was able to get service and they would call me Thursday evening to let me know if there was a problem and if not they would install on the following day. I had not heard anything from them at 4:45 Thursday afternoon(They close at 5:00) so I called them and the guy told me that the person doing the tests had not come back in yet and they would call me that night and let me know what was going on. At 10:30 Friday morning I called them back after not hearing from them and was told the site test would be done that day and storms had pushed back their schedule. So my next question was when the service would be moved. The anwser to that question was 7-10 days. After argueing with the person from Aircanopy for a while I gave up and cancelled service. The one thing that this company counts on is that they are one of the only high speed internet providers around. This will not always be the case and one day they will be wondering what happened to all the customers.

These guys are fantastic. Everything leading up to installation was a breeze. I was surprised at how quickly I was up and running, and how professional the techs are. After pulling out my hair looking for high-speed in the small town of Ferris, I thought I would never find any besides that 247365 joker. He offers 1/4 of the speed of AirCanopy, at twice the price. Not to mention he would never show up to test my location(or anyone else I have spoken to). I almost gave up hope until I found AirCanopy on this site. Wow, was I impressed. As it turns out, they did not yet fully service my area with a traditional access point, but were eager to add the necessary equipment to deliver service to me. And now they are going in permanently with an all-out relay in downtown to better serve the whole community!!
Take my advice: If you live anywhere near their service area, call them. You'll be glad you did.
