July 2007: New HN7000/HN7700 modems from Hughes make VPN better over satellite than in last 7 years at an affordable price not seen before. January 2005: Love the Enhanced upload business class of service being offered on G4R here in Canada. Long waited for and truley the best bang for the buck at $145/month! Okay, after being on the Hughes, C-Com Direcway two way highspeed satellite system for 30 months now, all I can say is it is stable and for our applications we run it gets a 9/10 !!! For what it is worth, We have been operational on SATMEX5, G11, GR4 satellites with services from the DW4000, DW4020 series of modems on all three satellites. The service is acceptable and is getting better and cheaper as time goes on. member for 22.2 years, 1003 visits, last login: 12.2 years ago updated 16.6 years ago

Love that DW6000Now that the Direcway DW6000 two way high speed internet satellite system has been installed and tested, it gets a 9.8/10 on the user expierence, browser snappy and slick one piece design, all coupled with a lower sticker cost and monthly cost too. What can I say a win-win suituation for all!!

Re: Love that DW6000 with Enhanced UploadsWell finially got my 0.98m dish mounted to the pole which is cemented in the ground! Rate Code 2 is the indication that you are on the Enhanced upload service offering from Direcay. Here in Canada we are paying $145 CDN a month for this service. It has been consistiently 90-110Kbps upload and 100-1300Kbs download.
Https sites work faster and I must say that I am very happy after being on the DW4000, DW4020 and DW6000 (all Business Grade of Services) but now witht he DW6000 and Enhanced uploads - THANKS DIRECWAY !!!!!

I no longer use Satellite ISP, I've rolled my own WISP - see » www.wakenet.ca member for 20.7 years, 3893 visits, last login: 1.9 years ago updated 19.1 years ago

FAP restriction?Does your satellite provider have any kind of FAP (fair access policy) limitations? I was disgusted with DirecWay for a lot of reasons, but one was their FAP: they capped downloads at 169MB/hr, and exceeding this limit would mean that you were reduced to about 56k speeds for the rest of the day.

Re: FAP restriction?Hi Denver!
Yes, my ISP has a FAP. For what I'm paying, I get the 500MB bucket. I'm sure you know how the FAP works: I have a bucket that can hold at most 500MB. The 'bucket' is being filled (or recharged) at a 56kbps rate. If my outflow (downloads) out paces my inflow (the refill rate), I'm throttled to the inflow rate.
I computed that it'll take 20 hours at 56kbps to refill my 'bucket' if I were to deplete it. At first glance this seems severe however I look at it this way: per month I'm given 14.9G to download.
I think that's _very_ reasonable.
If I need to download the latest version of RH, I'm okay amortizing the downloads across several days.
In short, there's a FAP however the fact that I can download at 1.1 to 1.3Mbps average (I see spikes of 1.8Mbps using NetPerSec) is a very good thing.
I use POP3S and SSMTP and Starband used to choke Outlook with its micro-outages. We'll see what happens with DirecWay.
Also, I should note that this is the Business version so installation and equipment was _not_ cheap. Again, I think that's a good thing because it limits the number of users.

Most people here are missing the point. I am assuming you live in a rural area where your business cannot get DSL, Cable or Point to point. The people that replied are normal residential users who played online games and like to download large files. If your only going to use your connection for work releated traffic it should be ok.

Re: crap systemI recommend that people put together their needs before talking to a sales person. My guy said: VPN -> no way, Gaming -> forget it ... although I didn't ask him about the two. Essentially, anything that requires interaction (VPN/Gaming/Remote shells), you're better off with something else. In my case I have a hybrid solution (that I'm still tweaking):
* Satellite Internet, and * Dial-up Internet
The latter gives me the ability to access remote machines and the former gives me the rocking downloads.
In my case, dial-up gives me at best 28kbps.
Have fun! | |
