I was happy with my InsightBB cable, but a friend said that for p2p (peer to peer file sharing) purposes, the local DSL was better because of their 1100/1100 SDsl services. So I got it, and I was getting great upload speeds... but my download speed were horrendous. Also, I needed to open up alot of my ports, because when you get the dsl all the ports are stealthed. Well, they offer you the software to do so, BUT THEY WANT TO CHARGE YOU FOR IT. Outrageous. So I just asked them if they could do it for me. They said sure, and said it would be done by the next afternoon. It wasn't. I called back. They said it would be done by the next day and that they'd make it urgent priority. I thanked them. The next day, still not open. I call back. It's friday, they apologize, because I'll have to wait until monday for them to do it. -sighs- I'm still waiting. My download speeds max out at around 600 when I'm fully optimized. I've done thorough testing and that's the highest I'm able to get. I'm less then 8000 feet from the central office. And, slow speeds don't bother them. If you tell them "Im getting severe packet loss, high ping rates, and about 55% of your advertised downstream speeds", they say "It's still better then 56k". Also, there are three levels of tech support. Level one are morons that they give a couple of index cards to read. Level two doesn't know what a port is. And level three is very intelligent, but still won't do what they say. The problem with the three level system is that I have to wait on hold for thirty minutes three times. The first time just to get a 1st level. The second to be told im being moved to second level. And the third time to be told I'm being moved to third level. InsightBB's upload stream may be slow (128k), but their download speed more then makes up for it. (I regularly got 2500k) The techies aren't much smarter, but the ports come pre-opened and there isn't an activation fee if you get your account during one of their special deal times. Plus, cable isn't too popular in this town (most of the people are really elderly) so you get pretty good speeds. Also, you don't have to pay the additional $8.00 for a static IP. DSL is fine if you're just a regular user. But, for the same price ((since I've already got digital cable for the tv, a $10.00 off factor)) I can quadruple my download speeds and have no p2p problems.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast
Since it's inception in Galesburg in 2000 at 384k/384k Gallatinriver DSL has been a excellent provider of DSL service in this area. I have had service with them 3 times and the first two times it was sDSL but this time it is aDSL with a Speedstream adsl modem. The only bad thing is that you can only hook 1 computer up to the dsl modem at one time and with the old modems you could hook up 4 computers to it at the same time... also no static IP

My Current Throughput is 1.1mbps down and 512kbps up but I usually run the speedtests and get about 1275kbps down and 506kbps up.

Along with my sDSL service I have a packaage called the no limits plan from Gallatinriver Communications where I get my aDSL, caller ID, voice mail, three way calling, anonymous call blocking, unlimited *69, call waiting, and a dial-up account in case your internet goes out or in case you travel all for $79.99 a month.

Ordered the service and picked up my dsl package the same day and it was up the next day... self install and they waive the $99 installation and $49 activation fees. works off of same phone line as your phone so no extra line needed...

Bottom line is that this is reliable service and I recommend it to everyone...

This my first review on GallatinRiver Communications (TELCO) and MebTel (CLEC)

GallatinRiver Communications in my area (Pekin,IL.) implemented DSL in the year 2000.
I ordered my 384/384 SDSL service ($39.99 plus $8.00 for Static IP) on Feb.21,2000 and had it installed on Feb.23,2000.The Tech had everything installed (inside wiring,DSL modem, ect.) and running within an hour.

Within the time that I have had DSL with GallatinRiver the service has changed alittle. My DSL speed is now 1.1/128 at the same price I paid back in 2000 when I ordered it.

I have had really good service with GallatinRiver since 2000 with only having downtime once due to faulty DSL modem (Lucent DSL-HS-2.3MBS). Took 1 day for the tech. to come out and replace it.

I recommend GallatinRiver DSL to anyone that wants Reliable,Fast and Professional Technical Sevice all the time over a competing cable provider in the area.

    My Other Reviews·Mediacom
Here's the updated version of my review on Gallatin River Communications. (Mebtel)

Since it's inception as a 384/384 SDSL service, Gallatin has since revised their entire DSL lineup. My service is now 1.1Mbps down, 128Kbps up. It is configured as a "capped" SDSL line, and still requires a separate pair. (No line sharing) More good news, along with a faster download speed, comes a lower price!! I was surprised on that one! My 384/384 was $49.95, the 1.1/128 is $39.95 per month. I have no need for a fat uplink pipe, so that was not an issue.

Overall uptime is exceptional, with few outages since last year when I started the service. As noted before, this is the ILEC, so the charges appear on your monthly phone bill.

The only thing that is starting to affect the service is the increased user-base. As time progresses however, I am told that significant updates to the backbone connection will occur. We had a slowdown a few months ago, but work has taken place and things are better again.

**Update on the backbone** The promised upgrades to the backbone connection have indeed happened, and speeds are once again smooth and consistent at all times of the day.

Overall, a good experience, and I would recommend them without reserve. (And have!)
