Persona is a horrible isp PERIOD. I have phoned over 15 times this month and have had 4 techs come. The techs dont even know what packet loss is. All the support people lie right to you and pretend that they know what the problem is. One repair guy told me that Persona's cable lines are going to crap and they are going to have to do a major upgrade.

DO NOT GET PERSONA! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR!

I signed up for their $1 for the first 2 months deal.

All in all a very good experience with persona. I called on a Wednesday to set up installation and got an appointment for the friday. Tech showed up just before 2pm and set everything up within minutes and was done and gone by 2pm. Though I was told that on the Friday they could only do it as an all day appointment from 8am-5pm, I told them I would prefer after 10am and they said they would make note of it.

So far all speed tests have been great and it's a good option for me.

Customer service is at least a half hour wait... for nothing. Pings to the Persona hub from my system at time are 200ms. Packet loss galore.

DO NOT SIGN ANY CONTRACTS. AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAQUE.

Latency was so bad last night my modem could not even connect. Called tech service and their reply was "sorry nothing we can do until we split your node" "your node should be split in the next couple months"... thats what they said 2 months ago.

My Other Reviews

·TekSavvy DSL
Coming from Cogeco where I had pretty good speeds and a 5mbit service, I'm glad that when I moved I wasn't going to lose the speed. Installation went good, everything so far has been pretty good these past 3 months. Only issue is I'd have to pay an extra $10/mth for an extra IP as I'd like to run a web server to be able to play and learn with Apache and SSH and PHP and the like, separate from my real internet connection. I could do that with cogeco, only way I could do that with Persona would be to have the linux box run as a firewall and I don't want to do that at this point as the linux box would go up and down and I'd have to call them each time to reset the mac that they have bound to the modem.

Other than that, decent service and decent pricing. If your in the area, I'd definitely recommend it.

As an old Rogers customer I have lots of first hand experience with sporadic "high” speed internet service. When I moved here I thought I was in for the same ride with Persona. For the first year there were lots of outages and disconnects, slow speeds and the like, however I found out these were just growing pains. Since this is the only choice for cable internet I stuck with them. They were happy to give me credits for the down times (well eventually).

I have been using persona for over 2 years now and am completely satisfied with the product and service I pay for. The news group access is comparable to Rogers, but retention sometime sux, but that isn’t Persona's area or fault. I still manage to DL over 100G per month without a problem, although news groups speed is capped around 70-90KB/sec or roughly 550-700 Kbps (according to D/U Meter). Broadband links like the ones in the forums here allow me to reach full speeds of 5.1Mps, which I think is great for the price I pay.

As for service Persona is no different than any other isp with new trainees, but I guess I got a lot of good schoolin after being with Rogers for years. Knowing what and how to ask makes things go much easier.

I.M.O. Persona is a great choice for people in this area.

Regards: Me

UPDATE- No more dowload cap!!!!!!
I was verry happy when i recieved the notice that the dowload cap has been removed and i would no longer have to pay the $5 no cap fee. WOOO- HOOO!!!
Still Great speeds at an even better price.
Me.

I've had persona(onlink)'s high speed cable internet for quite a long time now. Over the years, I never had many problems with them. If I did, the customer support would help out and would actually fix the problem.

I heard that Persona bought Onlink, which would explain why it went from a good solid ISP to the worst service I have EVER seen.

During June 2005, I starting having problems with the service. The downtime was outrageous and I could not get anything done. I had to get arrangements done with my teachers to give my exams late because there service was not available when I needed them.

We talked with customer support alot and they kept saying it was our router. I know why, they just want more money for extra connections. Like hell I'd give them any more money for their pathetic service. They then tried to change the modem and the cable going into my home, with none of those options changing anything.

At the end of the summer, we still had an unreliable internet connection. We then disconncted their digital cable (it was a package with their internet) and for some reason, the internet started to work a little better. Would it last? We obviously know the answer to that.

Last week, I and MANY others who have Internet through Persona's sub companies(onlink/vianet) have been getting massive downtime. At this very moment, I'm getting disconnected at the minimum every 20 minutes and so are the other people I've talked to. I've emailed Onlink a few times with no reply. I started to email Persona today, but I doubt they'll be any helpful. Knowing them, they'll blame my router.

I'll start calling tomorow, and if nothing is done to fix it, I'm going to what I should have done a long time ago, find a new ISP. I think I've given them enough chances. I doubt they care about losing one customer, but I'm not the only one from my community who's considering changing ISP because of the problems over the last few months.

I HOPE the customer support I talk to tomorow isn't as stupid as last one. He tried to be technical and sound like he knew what he was doing, making random excuses and exercises to figure out what the problem was. Unlucky for him, most of his instructions were wrong and he wasn't talking to some random internet "noobie". Next time you try to toss some bullshit around, Persona, make sure he isn't a level A apprentice in Computer Technology, please.

I was previously with Cogeco. (fast and informed)

But I moved to Sydenham and now I'm with Persona. Their network has very poor latency. We talking first hop is 7-12ms and the second hop is 100-170ms ---- Cable, not dailup. By the time the packets hit the end of thier pipe your up to 180-230ms on a good day.

Dialup provides better latency then their current network.

Their CSR's are poorly trained. ex. During the trouble(shooting), they had me unplug my cable modem, so i did. The CSR starts questioning why they are unable to get a response from my computer.... I offered to plug the modem back in. They replied no.

Well after dealing with 2 tiers of customer support and being told there was no support past Tier 2. I contacted www.BBB.org and was connected to a customer support specialist. Wendy assured me that things were slated to be fixed and upgraded. And should be done in 8-10 weeks. Well that was last July and its been over 36 weeks now and they have only gotten worse.

What these results mean is, Online gaming is not possible with this ISP. You only end of getting kicked from game servers and sometimes banned.

This company sells internet plans to unsuspecting consumers that it can not possibly provide. Even its lightest and least expensive packages are out of its reach with the current state of its network.

In dealing with all levels of this company I have come to see that n00bsona Internet lacks the know-how to understand the problem, or even see it. If you have any alternatives to this ISP, I suggest you take it. And if this is your only choice for so-called broadband it would be a waste of money to get anything but their lowest package.

**Persona Internet has said that it has halted the sale of it Broadband service to this area until what they believe to be the problem is fixed.

Persona is the only cable internet provider in our city. There are other ISP's, but they still use Persona's servers for their service. In any case, they are a good ISP that has pretty fast speeds. However, their tech support and quality of service needs drastic changes. I called their tech support to inquire on a situation where they do upgrading during peak hours, and not off hours. The technician hung up on me while I was asking him a question about why they would not wait until off peak hours to do an upgrade. I think if there was another choice for a cable outlet I would rather have them.
