·Eastlink Cable
So far so good, left sympatico because of bad tech support and went to persona cable internet, used tech help once just to see if it was better than sympatico's India help.Persona spoke english becuase it is based in canada. And I understood everything they said.Responce from tech was quick and painless, problem solved in a few minutes.Dont know why they wont let you install yourself, but i can live with that.I got the ultimate pack, that gives better speeds,so far it has proven to be more reliable than sympatico's ultimate pack.So far I do see slow downs at peak hours can be madding at times.Over all i am still not sure about cable being faster than dsl, jury is still out.I have seeing slow speeds lately not sure why, really starting to wonder about this service, the other thing that I dont understand,is that there are no forums by Persona customers any where there are lot of people using persona but no one is seeking help or even talking about it.So far this cable (persona) has been rock solid, cant complain at all, tech help is local and easy to reach and help out.Have just been told that Persona is now being bought by EastLink, so name Persona is gone and is now EastLink,Will have to see what the change means.Still finding speeds on this cable service spotty,in fact some days it just seems to die out,not happy but no where else to go.Have just upgraded to the 15 meg service, very fast and no price change, cant beat that.

I was pleased to see the installation was separate phone modem from internet modems. This allows better management within the premises . Have found that the service will require occasional restart ( powerdown and detach cable feed for a minute) to restore service. Possible susceptible to inclement weather.

I have the full DIGITAL PACKAGE(Internet, Phone and Digital TV). Have Digital TV and PVR which allows me to record shows and watch them later. PVR has its issues but all in all still good. PvR will sometimes record a different channel or will record 5 minutes into the show and stop 5 min before the show ends. Kinda pisses me off when you don't get to see the last bit of something.

Was VERY easy to order and get installed. All I did was called and ordered it and they had it on like 4 days after I called!

They brought the modem to me and I installed it myself(external, so it was easy to install).

The also brought some extra COAX cable in case I needed it for the connection and the Ethernet cable also.

Tech support and the people they send out are kinda useless, theres only a few I've come across that REALLY know what they are doing.

I have a static IP and I don't mind having it. Little unsafe but OK for now I guess.

All in all it is a good service and I like them, just wish they would lower thier prices abit.

I spent a year on Sympatico DSl paying for 3 meg, best I ever got was 800KB. I averaged 4 service calls a month, DSL would be down for days at a time. Went through Sync no Surf, they still deny firmware upgrade posted here exists.

Called Persona, $30.00 install charge, great bundle price for analogue TV and High Speed. Paying $5.00 per month for no cap.

Installer here 1/2 hour ... great guys, good job. 1st connect speed was over 5 meg, varies from day to day, but never under 3 meg.

Called tech support to set up e-mail. They were polite, knew what they needed to tell me, and did not treat me like a moron like Sympatico. For once the knowledge of the tech person was not below my own.

UPDATE____ Went througha few months where the service sucked - down to .6mbs instaed of 6...Call center staff great - Business Internet contact stopped returning calls, was no help at all. Call center indicated that lines from Lindsay to Peterborough were at 94% - my node was at 30 - but there was ahuge bottleneck....Just 2 weeks ago it was off for a few hours, and since then never under 5 mbs. Would have HELPED if they talked to the customers though.

I have had no problems so far, everyone in my area loves the service.

I signed up for their $1 for the first 2 months deal.

All in all a very good experience with persona. I called on a Wednesday to set up installation and got an appointment for the friday. Tech showed up just before 2pm and set everything up within minutes and was done and gone by 2pm. Though I was told that on the Friday they could only do it as an all day appointment from 8am-5pm, I told them I would prefer after 10am and they said they would make note of it.

So far all speed tests have been great and it's a good option for me.

My Other Reviews

·TekSavvy DSL
Coming from Cogeco where I had pretty good speeds and a 5mbit service, I'm glad that when I moved I wasn't going to lose the speed. Installation went good, everything so far has been pretty good these past 3 months. Only issue is I'd have to pay an extra $10/mth for an extra IP as I'd like to run a web server to be able to play and learn with Apache and SSH and PHP and the like, separate from my real internet connection. I could do that with cogeco, only way I could do that with Persona would be to have the linux box run as a firewall and I don't want to do that at this point as the linux box would go up and down and I'd have to call them each time to reset the mac that they have bound to the modem.

Other than that, decent service and decent pricing. If your in the area, I'd definitely recommend it.

As an old Rogers customer I have lots of first hand experience with sporadic "high” speed internet service. When I moved here I thought I was in for the same ride with Persona. For the first year there were lots of outages and disconnects, slow speeds and the like, however I found out these were just growing pains. Since this is the only choice for cable internet I stuck with them. They were happy to give me credits for the down times (well eventually).

I have been using persona for over 2 years now and am completely satisfied with the product and service I pay for. The news group access is comparable to Rogers, but retention sometime sux, but that isn’t Persona's area or fault. I still manage to DL over 100G per month without a problem, although news groups speed is capped around 70-90KB/sec or roughly 550-700 Kbps (according to D/U Meter). Broadband links like the ones in the forums here allow me to reach full speeds of 5.1Mps, which I think is great for the price I pay.

As for service Persona is no different than any other isp with new trainees, but I guess I got a lot of good schoolin after being with Rogers for years. Knowing what and how to ask makes things go much easier.

I.M.O. Persona is a great choice for people in this area.

Regards: Me

UPDATE- No more dowload cap!!!!!!
I was verry happy when i recieved the notice that the dowload cap has been removed and i would no longer have to pay the $5 no cap fee. WOOO- HOOO!!!
Still Great speeds at an even better price.
Me.

Ive used two other cable internet providers (shaw and rogers) in the past and before I got Persona I gave Bell Sympatico a chance. Bell sent me a defective modem so they blew there chance. But I have to say that this is the fastest and most reliable one ive used yet. In 6 months I havent had any down time yet and my speed is around whats advertised. Needless to say im very happy with it. I only wish I could get the full 512 upload out of it though. Still 470-480 isnt bad.

Since I'm in a small community in the middle of nowhere, this service has proven itself well worth the cost. I'm using the "Lite" package as I don't do massive downloading so it fit the budget quite well. The time to wait for it to be installed was a little long though, yet the technician that was here was polite and professional. The modem is a SuperLink 2800 and it seems to operate cooler than the previous DSL modem I had with a previous ISP. The IP is dynamic, which is standard for home users. The internet noise traffic is much lower compared to the "big guys". The only drawback I have found so far is the speed which could be related to the speed of my pc. When downloading a file, it averages about 60-70 kbps, not the advertised "up to 512kbps". Could also be the distance from their office too. I'm over 2 hours away from them. Still, it's been reliable and any issues I have had, were looked into immediately. Their customer service and tech support staff have been the best I have ever dealt with over the years. I was already a tv cable customer, so the installation was free and they gave me the package for 14.99/monthly for the first three months... Even then, after the promo price is over, it's only $24.99/monthly and there are no additional fees such as modem rental fees that I've noticed some other ISP's charge. (Well, there is the taxes... but that's just about on everything nowadays).

Overall, I'm a happy camper.

(Note, that I don't download music, watch videos or play online games)

Glenn
