·Winchester Wirel..
Options: I had Dialup (too slow), Hughesnet (too slow), Visual Link (too many outages), and lastly Winchester Wireless (grossly oversubscribed with no service due to no bandwidth). So I called Wave2Net.

Speed/package: Wave2Net matched Winchester Wireless at $39 a month with no contract for 3 megs down and 1 meg up.

Order and install: a phone call and they were in my yard and ON TIME!

Equipment: They could have re-used my antenna that I bought from Winchester Wireless, but I optioned to trade the 900mhz for a 5.4mhz in the event I want more bandwidth in the future.

Good and Bad: All good so far. I can now watch NetFlix (never could with Winchester Wireless). The bandwidth is ALWAYS there regardless of the time of day. What struck me the most was that they are able to deliver service when others could not.

My Other Reviews

·Winchester Wirel..
• What other options did you consider for broadband
There is another company, www.winchesterwireless.com, that has a much better service model. No Contracts, reasonable rates, and is willing to stand behind its service.

• What SPEED/package did you order, at what monthly price?
Family Plan at $59/mo

• How was the order & install process?
I had to contact the company a couple of times just to get scheduled then it took approximately 60 days to actually get service. The install was completed in one day.

• What brand/model was the supplied equipment?
A TR-CPQ-19F Tranzeo wireless antenna.

• What good or bad experiences most struck you?
What struck me most was the company was more interested n arguing the technicalities of their position then keeping me as a customer. Had I been happy with their service I would have never looked elsewhere. I have already advised several people to be careful if they choose this company and instead referred them to the one I'm using now.

Value for money:

I recently moved from the FiOS-connected suburbs back out to rural Virginia, so I'm probably somewhat spoiled by a rock solid 20Mbps DL/5Mbps UL. I needed high speed Internet not just for web browsing and e-mail, but for audio and video conferencing for work purposes. I tried to get DSL or Cable, but neither was available in my area. Here on DSL Reports, I found Wave2Net. There were several negative reviews, which definitely scared me, but I didn't have a lot of choices.

Fortunately, at least so far (only online for 2 weeks now), I've been very pleased with my interactions with Wave2Net and the service. It's not perfect for my needs, but Wave2Net was up front with me that as a wireless service, they can't guarantee VoIP or similar applications. That said, the service has been good enough for VoIP most of the time. In the evenings, the quality drops on voice calls, maybe because more people are using it then and saturating the spectrum? I'm not sure of the reason, but during the day, I don't have any hiccups. When it cuts out, it's comparable to a weak cell signal - you can still make the call, but you might occasionally need to repeat or ask the other party to repeat something.

For more standard applications, like web browsing and file downloads, with one exception when my signal was down for 2 hours (no idea why, maybe the weather) the service has been indistinguishable from a cable or DSL connection. To the extent this review can be helpful to the standard user: if you want a basic connection for standard uses (outside of VoIP), Wave2Net has been superb.

My biggest criticism of Wave2Net as a company is on the contract. For me, they required a 2 year contract which doesn't let me out even if I think the service is unacceptable, because Wave2Net reserves all rights to determine if the service is not good enough. On the phone, (very helpful and friendly people on the phone, by the way) they told me this means about 75% of the stated speeds, and that if they can't provide that, they would let me out. I wish they would put that in writing - why have a customer friendly policy like that, but then scare off customers by not putting it in writing?

In all fairness to them, they have been able to provide 75% of the stated bandwidth.

My other criticism is that apparently even on their SoHo plan, I can't have access to port 80 for an HTTP server. This is a fairly standard need. It doesn't really affect me (I only use HTTPS and SMTP) but I'm surprised they do this. They also claim that every user will receive a static IP, but you really have to be at least at their SoHo plan at about $80/mo for any of the traffic to actually reach your physical location (that seems expensive for the bandwidth and limited capabilities), because they close all the ports on the family plan. That said, again, this would not be an issue for the typical user.

I think several of the negative reports here at DSLReports may be by the same guy, maybe a disgruntled employee, trying to make Wave2Net look bad. They are strangely personal (he created a website against them!), keeps referring to the president by name, and doesn't speak to any actual usage issues.

My experience with Wave2Net support is that, at least during business hours (unfortunately only available on M-F, 8-5), I could almost always reach someone directly in support. In trying to troubleshoot some server issues relating to port forwarding, their support personnel were excellent - smart, responsive, and caring. It took a lot of calls and shared troubleshooting, but they got everything working for me.

Everything has occurred on schedule, with the installer arriving and installing an antenna on a chimney above my metal roof in the rain. I'm amazed he did this. When he arrived, I asked how long it would take and he estimated about an hour. It took several, so maybe they could coach their installers on the virtues of under-promise and over-deliver, but the guy did a great job. He hid the wire pretty well and other than a slightly ugly antenna atop my chimney, I think it's about as neat an exterior install job as could have been done. He did use a black wire, where a white one would have been less visible against my white house, but again, because he hid the wire so well, this is not really an issue.

Inside, where he drilled to bring the wire through, he left the sawdust from the drill on the floor and didn't mount or ground the little box (not sure what to call it, sort of like a modem I suppose). I'm not sure if it needed to be grounded, but I screwed the loose green wire into a screw on the back of my UPS. To me, these are trivial and minor issues that took me all of 5 minutes to clean up after him and set the box where it was hidden and out of the way.

All in all, based on the install and experience of the first two weeks, I would absolutely recommend Wave2Net for standard usage (web browsing, e-mail, file downloads, etc.) and say they are good enough for VoIP and video conferencing if you don't have alternatives. Everyone I've worked with at Wave2Net has been helpful and a pleasure on the phone and in person. If I could get FiOS out here, I'd still prefer that for the much higher speeds and rock steady signal quality.

It's only been 2 weeks. If anything changes dramatically in the future, I'll report back.

re: Middletown, VA service

You may want to also check out Winchester Wireless. Their service is only $39.99/mo. and is available without a contract and they also offer a full 30 day 100% money back guarantee. Their service is very low latency as they use only Motorola Canopy gear from end-to-end. Look into it while you are still within your 30 day cancellation period with Wave2Net. (link removed)

Wave2Net and Winchester Wireless

I had spoken with Winchester Wireless (I respect the technology they're using) and they were not able to provide service at my address, so I didn't consider them further.

I've been using Wave2Net for a couple of months now, so far quite happy, with the minor exceptions I raised earlier (not quite good enough for VoIP at certain times of day). I have not experienced another cut out, like the 2-hour issue I mentioned before. Reliability has been very good in all kinds of weather (heavy rain, heavy snow, heavy fog, etc.). I have lost service one other time, but it was only out for about 10 minutes.

All in all, pretty good for two months of constant heavy usage I put on the system (I work from home and use it constantly). I would still prefer greater reliability with no down time at all (my FiOS connection never blinked for even a second over 3 years of heavy use) and quality of service for VoIP (like I could do over any wire-based service), but in a rural area where wireless is the only option, I understand we can't ignore RF physics. Taking that into account, and that I can enjoy not living in the 'burbs, I'm very happy with Wave2Net.

oh my where to begin... (www.wave2not.com)
Ya know i read this page and all the reviews before i signed up, but thought they are all older at this point - if they are still around things must be better! THEY AREN'T!!!

the service - or lack there of is a joke! the best thing you could do since the Winchester area now has 3G service is look up Verizon or AT&T's wireless broadband service.

I could go on and on like all the others on this page, but I'll try to keep it concise.

You will be obligated to pay even though you wont get service. Pretty much you will pay hundreds for installation and monthly fees and GET NOTHING in return!

Please - i cannot plead this enough - this is the worst company. They are unreasonable and not understanding. Dialup is faster and reliable. i am not exaggerating!!! I spent hours on the phone, wrote countless emails... all i was ever told was reboot and reset the router! I even bough 2 different wireless routers for my house because for some reason this incompetent company says linksys is no good and blamed my router. I've lost HUNDREDS of dollars to them all because i signed up!

So far i've managed to save 4-5 families hundreds of dollars by talking them out of signing up. I will continue to help push this cause forward. www.wave2not.com
I am quite proficient with network management and the internet - these people asked me my opinion for a reason.
I used to work in downtown Winchester and I'm pretty plugged into the area tech community, ive since taken a position as a Sr web developer for a TV channel so i dont work (but live) in area.

seriously:
They are not worth the hassle, effort, maintenance and headaches let alone even considering...

Please do not use Wave2NoNet.

This is the worst company I have delt with in my life. The owner of the company--Rudy
Worrell--has no intention whatsoever of dealing with his customers in an honest way. And
make no mistake about it, Worrell pulls all the strings at the company. I subscribed to
Wave2NoNet over a year and a half ago, and I have had 5 to 6 months of no service. Like
many people these days, I depend on the internet to work from my home, and Wave2NoNet
has caused real damage to my business.

I have tried to work with them, and only get a run around. Don't let the smooth talking Rudy
(if you can reach him) fool you. Without a doubt, he is a snake in the grass; he will never
give proper credit for downtime, will create new excuses continually, and will send goofy
threatening letters if you try to push for fair treatment.

After a year and a half of problems, and while I was completely paid up, I began to notify
Worrell I was no longer able--or willing-- to pay him for unreceived services. I notified him
by registered mail, as well as other methods, of my intent to get another service provider.

Despite being owned hundreds of dollars for unreceived service, I was willing to walk
away if he would cancel the contract. He refused, and wanted an additional $240 to
cancel. I will not give this thief another penny of my money, and have filed a small
claims case. I did not want to take this step because it represents MORE WASTED
TIME, but I am so fed up with this person, and he will not accept reason.

No company can be worst, and I am completely serious when I say you are better off
with a pitiful dial up. At least you can check your e-mail with a dial up.

I was using wireless broadband ISP that went bust and Wave2Net took on some of their customers, as they also had a WAP in the area (Babb's Mountain). I think the access point towers are kind of patched together to form a coverage area, so your individual connectivity cannot be guaranteed.

I was added onto a new WAP in the area, and was getting about 6mbit/4mbit, which greatly exceeded my expectations, even though the overall latency was still less than optimal (many dropped packets). After about 2 weeks the line either has become congested or they actually throttled because the speed has dropped down sharply.

Hopefully fiber lines are coming through this growing area. Like others have said, this tech could be really good if some effort was put into it. If the price point was targeted at the same business-class level as the satellite providers ($100+/mo) I think the WISPs could afford to regulate a more reliable connection.

I have had nothing but problems connecting to the internet through Wave2NOT. I wish I had known about this site before I signed on with them. When Rudy first came out and installed the equipment we were please with the connection speeds and service. But it wasn't long before the chit hit the fan and the connection got slower and s l o w e r and s l o w e r. And more times than not I can't even get connected. I have maintained my People PC account and am now using dial up to be here.

I have just read all the reviews from before and every bad thing that has been written before is still true and then some. Nothing has changed. Service is slower than dial up most of the time (when you can get a connection) Customer Service is a joke. The owner Rudy Worrell has instructed his employees not to tell people his name. When you request that the "owner" call you he does not and won't. Refuses to.

As the owner of the company Rudy doesn't care about customer satisfaction all he cares about is getting his money. He forgets that his contract is an agreement between to parties exchanging a service for money. He has been taking my money but not giving me his service.

If anyone out there knows of any other wifi provider in this area please please let me know.

CAN'T WAIT TO DUMP THESE PEOPLE, CONTRACT OR NO CONTRACT

Had wave2net service for over a year. Install process was fair, except for the fact that the antenna was aligned improperly from the start and I wasn't getting the best of all possible connections. They came out and moved the antenna on my roof 10 feet (making more holes in my roof) and signal became better.

I had very high hopes for this company when they installed the service and it has been fairly reliable but there appears to be very little redundancy and backup in their network infrastructure. When something goes bad, it goes bad for a long time.

When it works, It works well and I get better than DSL speeds. When it doesn't work you fight with lousy customer service that doesn't care and seems to only operate during normal business hours.

I only keep them because I have no alternatives except dialup.

If asked about wave2net I must say.. RUN FORREST RUN!!

3/20/08

I've disconnected my service with Wave2Net.

They even wanted me to PAY to remove the antenna off my roof. FAT CHANCE RUDY!!

There is now EVDO Rev A in the area and I couldn't be happier..

Yeah a call for service would wind up getting me talking to someone in INDIA for support.

BUT AT LEAST THEY ARE ANSWERING THE PHONE!!!

I've never gotten proper QOS from Wave2Net,their support stinks and they lie. At least they have to me..

AND THEY DON"T PROPERLY GROUND THEIR EQUIPMENT. (At least they didn't for me...) They just stick it on the roof and hope for the best.

I was told that my problems with service were a 'BUFFERING" problem with my Linksys router. if a BUFFERING issue DID exist why couldn't this type of problem be found in a google search??

Once again blowing smoke up my Butt..

This expensive pig is outta my life and I'm happy for growing technology.

Its really a shame too because this concept is a really good idea.

I am highly impressed by the service and support from Wave2Net. If it wasn't for this company, I would be surfing the Internet on a dial-up modem pulling the rest of my hair out. I'll admit it, I was a little hesitant to call them after reading some of the reviews but being so far out from civilization, I had no choice but to made the call. I am so glad I did, so far nothing but great success and every person that I have talked to within the company has gone beyond the call of duty to make me happy customer.

Great job Wave2net.

All I can say really is "AVOID AT ALL COSTS!" If you have a choice between this WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) and dial-up, go with dial up. No question. As other reviewers have noted, they are all smiles and promises of great things to come, but after they get your signature on their questionable contract for a 24 months service plan (HA! service. That's rich! That word implies you actually get something for your money.) all bets are off.

In terms of service, basically everyone gets what they get or what they decide to set your throughput to that day, week, month. That doesn't stop them from charging full price though, and their favorite excuse when asked about the lack of bandwidth at any given time is (NETWORK OVERHEAD!) Example: According to them a 1 meg connection is subject to a 60% to 80% bandwidth loss due to NETWORK OVERHEAD. This is at any and all times of the day or night. Essentially you pay full price and in return you get about 30% of your contract bandwidth and that is IF it is actually working that day.

They neglect to include information on their service page stating the bandwidth included for each plan listed. This wasn't the case when I first found them. That should have been the first warning bell! All plans are described in such a way so that they can make the actual bandwidth level whatever they feel like. Everything about their service description is vague. Their TOS (Terms of Service) is written in such a way that the customer is promised nothing, yet the company is entitled to everything. They are taking advantage of good people whose only wish is for a well-maintained, reliable Internet connection for a fair price, and who unfortunately, have little or no alternative to this joke of a service.

When anyone mentions Wave2net or S**t2net, as I like to call them, all they need to know are words like unreliable, fraudulent, price gouging, monopoly. My hope is that someone has this company and its owner investigated for their questionable activities and business practices. This area does not need or deserve a company such as this, taking advantage of its people who live here. How they got their business license, I will never figure out.

Directly to the owner, since it is apparent you read and comment on these reviews, do not offer a phone call or appointment to be made to talk and work out any concerns I or anyone else has about your company. That road has already been taken (many times) and it has "ZERO" affect on the issues. Nothing changes on your end. Statements like "please call if you have any issues with our company, so we may work out a solution," are purely for the benefit of anyone who reads these reviews and is your sad attempt at damage control.

Buyer BEWARE!
