"fast, reliable service out in the middle of nowhere"
"initial problems as they were expanding to cover this area"
"if you need broadband in rural areas, RM is the way to go"

Value for money:

Ordered basic RM service: 768k up/down with a static IP for $39/month with no contract. I've had the service for about 6 months now. They installed a wireless bridge/antenna on the roof and hooked up a Linksys BEFSR41 at no charge (included in the monthly cost). Install was no problem, I did have an issue with my bridge jumping from the RM access point to a neighbors unsecured wireless AP, but it was fixed and no problems since.

This was my first experience with a wireless ISP's service (previously had SBC DSL and Comcast HSI) and I've been pretty impressed with the speed and reliability.

Customer service during non-business hours is unbearable ... actually first level support at any time of day is pretty bad. I usually end up having to talk to one of the managers to get some good help and then the problem gets solved pretty quick (referencing the access point issue mentioned above).

One of my few complaints is why so many inbound ports that are blocked at the edge of their network. Almost all server ports are blocked (which can be worked around quite easily) and some rather unusual ports are blocked which don't really seem necessary for security, TOS, etc... one of which is the TFTP port that AT&T's call vantage service uses :-/

Overall, I'm pretty happy. I get pretty close to advertised speeds, usually testing at 700k/700k anytime of the day or night. Only other option is a local cable company that offers 512k/128k (actual speeds of 300k/80k) for $10 more.

Update October 2006: Well, RedMoon sold off their residential customers to CoolAccess Wireless a few months ago and service has gone downhill. I'll enter a new review for them. No problems with RedMoon at all, but CoolAccess has forced me to switch to a new provider altogether.

Addison,Dallas,TX
Contract price not specified.
"no long term contract, thankfully"
"bad connectivity, worse tech support only solution offered is sell you hardware"
"would prefer a $9.95 dial up account"
Pre Sales Information:
Install process:
Connection reliability:

Value for money:

I am in Addison Texas on a temporary assignment and needed broadband. I
found moonoveraddison as a wi-fi and connected to see what it was. I did a
few Googles and didn't find any bad press. I had a good signal so I signed
up for 1 month access. I should have continued to search because if I had
I would have found out that they are really Redmoon Broadband that is
hiding behind a different name because they have so much BAD press under
their real name. The connection varies so much from one minute to the next
that it is impossible to use. It is not stable enough to connect to my
pop3 server, I end up having to re-send things several times to get it
thru. My connection will go from 'Very Good' to 'Poor' in seconds then
back up then back down. Their only solution is that I send them $99 for a
'bridge' that once again ties me to a hardwired connection -- SO much for
the 'WI' part of 'Wi-Fi' if you sign up with them. And they do not even
guarantee that the bridge will solve the problem, If it dont you are out
not only the months connection fee, plus the $99 for the bridge but you
also still have to go to someone else and buy REAL broadband. For the
quality they provide I would as soon have a $9.95 a month dial up for any
local ISP. To tell you how bad they are neither Redmoon Broadband or
it's parent Newmarkettechnology even post an e-mail address in the contact
areas of their web sites. I can only assume because it fills up with
complaints so quickly their pitiful servers can handle it.

"Only good point is that they came and installed on a saturday"
"Service is unreliable. No one is available when service is out. When service is out it is out for at least 24 hours."
"RedMoon has got to be the worst ISP out there. For the reliability and service, it is a complete rip off"
Pre Sales Information:

Value for money:

RedMoon is the worst ISP that I have ever dealt with. The transfer speeds are nowhere near what they advertise. There is no customer support after 5 pm on week days and none on weekends. When you call on the weekends, you get a message that your call is being transfered to a service representative, then you get Damion's voice mail. They do not ever tell you what their service hours are. When the service goes down, it will be down for at least 24 hours. If it goes down on a Friday, it will not be back up until Monday, or the next business day. If they are closed for a week (for instance the week between Christmas and New Years), it can be down for a week. The "service technitians" are not helpful. Simply put, do not waste you money on them. There are better alternatives. If RedMoon is the only high speed internet service offered where you live, don't bother. Use dial-up...it is more reliable.

to me red moon broadband is best option were i now live. for 39.99 you get a static ip, unwavering advertised speed 700+/700+ almost no down time etc. i've had them all, sbc dsl, comcast cable and a similiar product to red moon called panaband. all cost more and delivered less. i have a half wireless half wired intranet configuration in my home---works wonderfully and i even gave sbc residental phones the big boot recently in favor of vonage voip service. the 700 up feature of redmoon makes the broadband phones work wonderfully---rock on red moon!!!!!

Crandall,Kaufman,TX
$39 per month
"No sign up fee for new customers"
"BAD custiomer service, Highly unprofesional staff."
"Don't Use this company."
Pre Sales Information:
Install process:
Connection reliability:

Value for money:

    Update:

Redmoon has replaced all the equipment in my house and everything is working great. The after hours tech support is still nothing more than an answering service but the connection has stablized. My only complaint is that they replaced my personal router with one that didn't have a firewall. I quikly switched back to my own.

When I first heard there would be broadband available in Crandall I was exited. I paid the $300 install fee and was up and running. Not soon after I signed up with a company called speednett. Things went great for almost a year. The connection was up almost all the time. There were only 2 instances where the connection was down for any amount of time and John at Speednett did a great job of keeping me informed about the status of the outage.

A couple of months ago Speednett was purchased by Redmoon. At that moment, almost as if a switch had been flipped by connection started having problems. Slow upload speeds sometimes and days without service others. It seemed I was the only one having a problem when I called but when I talked to other Crandall residents with the service they complained about the problems also.

The first thing I noticed was a slow down in speed. When I called to report it I always got the same question: ¡§did you reset your router and the antennae?¡¨ Beyond that the so called 24/7 tech support was useless and I would have to wait until the next business day to talked to someone who knew how to do more than answer the phones and ask the same question. The problem went away, but a new one cropped up shortly after.

The next problem was Upload speed. Download speed seemed ok but upload speeds were around 4k. as tested at dfw.speakeasy.com . When I called this in of course I was asked that same question and told that I would have to wait until Monday to have a tech call me during business hours. I told the tech to have them call my cell phone because I had a job just like they did. With my connection down all weekend I waited. Monday a person in a car shows up, knocks on the door, and asks my wife if we¡¦ve had problems with the connection and says he needs to get to the computer to change some settings. She calls me at work and asks if I was expecting a tech. I said no send him away. This was kind of creepy. I didn¡¦t expect anyone to come out. Speednett had fixed any issues without coming out. When I got home there was a message on the machine that a tech was in the area and was going to try to stop by. If instruction had been followed and they called my mobile this would have been fine. I called the tech back at Redmoon and was told that they think it was a line of sight issue and that he would call the tech and see when the tech could be in my area. This is a company I pay 39.99 a month to but I have to schedule time off around this techs schedule? I was told this was the case. After some arguing we agreed the tech would come out on a Saturday and see if they could get the problem solved. I said if the problem could not be solved I wanted the $300 set up fee back. The tech explained to me that I paid the $300 to Speednett, not Redmoon and that they would not be giving me my money back. I said I paid the $300 on the premise that I would have broadband afterwards and that I no longer had that. They adamantly insisted I would not get my money back. When I asked to speak to customer service the person on the phone said ¡§this is customer service¡¨ I said ¡§ I thought you were a tech¡¨ and they replied ¡§I¡¦m both¡¨

They also said repeatedly that they think it¡¦s a ¡§Line of sight¡¨ problem. My problem with that is the line of sight was fine as long as Speednett was in charge. And that I didn¡¦t see how that could affect upload speed and not download speed.

While waiting for the tech to find time to get to my house, I get a phone call. Again this call was to my home during the day when I have repeatedly told people at that company to note my account to call me on my cell. It was a call asking for permission to get on the roof. Permission could have been granted if they had called me on my cell as instructed.

The next night the connection went down completely. I called a friend to se if his was down and it was. I called Redmoon to report the outage. After pressing 2 for tech support I was left on hold for 30 minutes. The friend called back to see of I had talked to them. I said I was on hold still. In the process I hung up and called back, complained to the tech about the hold time and was told the was no one in queue so he didn¡¦t know why I waited that long. He again placed me on hold. I had to hang up 10 minutes later because I had company at the door. I called back and hour and a half later only to get the rudest person I could talk to on the phone. I asked how long Crandall was going to be down. In an extremely rude tone she says. ¡§WE don¡¦t know, WE just got confirmation from the NOC that it really was down.¡¨

Sorry for the long spill but I just wanted ot let everyone know just how bad the customer service at this company really is. I have never been treated so poorly by a company that I pay regularly in my life. To get broadband elsewhere I would need to pay another $300 for a setup fee as Crandall has no other options.

Aubrey,Denton,TX
$39 per month

"No limits on downloads/uploads, no contracts required, affordable"
"Unreliable connection, speed is not what is advertised"
"the best you can get if DSL/Cable is unavailable"
Pre Sales Information:

Connection reliability:

Value for money:

When I first got the service it was up and down all day long for weeks. I wasnt able to stay connected for more than an hour or so without it going down for sometimes hours. Now service is a lot more solid so I cant complain about that.

The speed however is not 768k up/down as advertised, its more like 80KB/sec down for the first mintue of your download/upload and then its around 30-40 KB/sec for the remainder of the time.

The service is pretty good for online gaming and provides low pings to most servers with as low as 29 sometimes but averaging around 90 in most games (unreal XMP, Counter-Strike, UT2K4).

If the service had a more reliable connection and constistantly higher transfer speed I would be completely satisfied.

Update: Well its been a while since the install date, almost a year. Service is substantially more stable and sustained download speeds have gone up slightly so thats great. However, with SOL and rumors of SBC coming into the neighborhood, RMBB and their terribly slow, condescending, tech support is starting to look less attractive.

Also dont expect to be able to run programs like BitTorrent or anything that will require you to upload as you download. I simply cannot get them to work and www.filerush.com is used by a multitude of people so I know the trouble is on my end.

So while the increased speeds are appreciated, dont expect to ever use them for anything other than a quick burst to load a website. That seems to be the only thing RMBB wants you to use the service for.
